For 'put' tell Ss: "Put your pens on the table." "Put your hands on your books." For "wait" tell a student "Come here." When they are halfway towards you, hold up a hand and say, "Wait." Look at your watch, wait a moment, and then say, "Okay, come here." For need, use coffee or money as an example. Use real wallets and cheques to teach these words.
2. Copy and cut up one set of pictures per pair (p. 45, with the card backing from p. 46 Step by step teaching on the other side). Say the word and have the Ss hold up the correct picture. Choral the word (you say and they repeat). Dohints again in and a different order. follow-up 3. Give out the New Word HO p. 47. Elicit the word and spelling and write together. suggestions including how 4. Day Two: Repeat steps 1 and 2 above. Then give out the cut-up set of word cards to vary materials for and have the students match with the pictures. (With L. 1, do steps 4 & 5 on Day 1.) 5. Play a game of concentration.
multi-level classes.
1. Model with a group of 3 students while the rest of the class gathers around to watch. 2. Shuffle together a word and picture set and put them face down on the table in a grid. 3. Each student in turn flips over two cards. If they match, they leave them face up. If they don't match, they have to turn them over. Then it's the next player's turn. NOTE: Encourage everyone in the group to say the words aloud as they are turned over. 6. Day Three: Repeat steps 1, 2, 4 & 5 above.
For Pre-Lit/Lit, save this as a story review after you have done the reader (p. 55-58). For L. 1, use this before doing the story on p. 59-60. 1. Copy and cut up one set of strips from p. 48 per pair. Have Ss work in pairs to read and order. Take up by having each pair in turn read one, while the others check. Banking Teacher's Guide TG 1 successintesl@yahoo.ca

2. Collect the strips and give out p. 49. Have Ss fill in the blanks. Have very high Ss cover the word box at the top and do. 3. Day 2: Have L. 1 Ss review using the cut-up step halves on p. 50. Have lit Ss review by re-ordering the strips from p. 48. (To make it more difficult, you can cut off the pictures.)
1. Tell the story as you uncover each picture frame by frame. Elicit as much as possible through guided questions. When possible, elicit the next frame before uncovering it. 2. Repeat, this time eliciting more. Choral each sentence or phrase. (Choral = you say first and then Ss repeat.) 3. Story Retells (Level 1): After learning the story on p. 59-60, review the following 3 or 4 days by putting up the OH and having Ss work in pairs to retell the story (books closed). (Intro by doing step 2 first.) 4. Story Questions (Level 1): After doing step 3, elicit and choral the sentence for the first frame, then give the question word and elicit the question. Put a grid on the board to help them: Who is this? What When Who Where How What he she
does
can
he do?
After you elicit each question, choral it. See the Grammar Supplement for extra HOs.
1. Choral (= you say first and then Ss repeat) each word. Model the correct stroke direction on the board. Have Ss say the word and trace it with their finger. (Work with one group of pre-lit Ss in a multi-level class or pair pre-lit Ss with a partner who can check their stroke direction and say the word aloud as their pre-lit partner writes.) 2. Have Ss trace with a pencil. 3. Consider purchasing our laminated Literacy Writing Boards to give your pre-lit Ss more writing practice.
