The Green Weekly

Cygnet Sea Dragons Junior Soccer Club Inc
1. Welcome
The first week of games since the school holiday period saw some very close affairs, the closest being arguably the U8 Whites nail biting 2-1 victory over arch rivals Margate. Our domination over Kingborough was continued by both U7 teams. For those new to the club, last year I did a count of matches played against some of our closest rivals (ie: St Aloysius, Margate and Kingborough). Here is a snippet of this analysis. Interesting reading is the results of our U6 and U7 teams. These two groups played 19 games against St Aloysius, for 14 wins, 3 draws and only 2 losses scoring 93 goals and 34 conceded. Margate and Kingborough fared even worse. Neither of these local opponents tasted any success whatsoever in 21 games. In a show of supremacy and how strong our clubs future stocks appear, a total of 129 goals were scored and only 24 conceded. While winning plays a part in the childrens enjoyment of the world game, it is certainly not everything. And this was proven by the performance of our U12 team. These kids really put in everything and a late goal saw them come back to 1-2 and then nearly draw level until a cracker of a goal from the opposition. This week Played 10 Won 6 Lost 4 Draw - For 35 Against 25 This season Played 30 Won 18 (60%) Lost 9 Draw 2 For 126 Against 70
Above is only for Juniors

This weekend sees teams again travel far and wide, particularly the Youth team which plays at Huonville!! Two U7 Calvin teams are daring to venture into the Cygnet stronghold. So far from three games, Calvin have had 3 defeats (scoring only 2 and conceding 18). We have 5 home games this weekend so all home teams (U7 Green/White, U8 Green, U9 White, U10 White) get your volunteer boots on to help with canteen. Post on our facebook page or contact Alison that you will help (see canteen section of newsletter). To all coaches note the return of the George award votes. See the Royal Rant for details. We also need a plumber to assist with moving a tap in canteen. Please contact me, Rod Parish or Luca Vanzino if you can help? Also thanks to Mark and Gini for kindly taking over the role of line marker! This will be a great help. Best of luck this weekend teams.

5. Hope goes Solo with angry World Cup rant It is not often that soccer/football, or indeed women's sports, becomes big news in the United States. But Hope Solo's furious comments after being left out of the women's national team's 4-0 World Cup semi-final defeat to Brazil in 2007 became a hot topic across the nation. Solo lashed out after being ditched from the starting line-up in favour of veteran Briana Scurry, who went on to give an unconvincing performance as the U.S. was dumped out of the tournament. Solo insisted she would have prevented the goals that Scurry let in and accused head coach Greg Ryan of living in the past by selecting her goalkeeping rival. Her actions led to her being sent home from China in disgrace and left out of three subsequent matches. 4. The Italian match-fixing scandal Italian soccer was plunged into crisis in 2005 and 2006, with the nation rocked by a deep-rooted scandal involving several of its biggest clubs. AC Milan, Juventus, Fiorentina and Lazio were all implicated in a web of deceit that included rigging games by arranging for the use of favourable match referees.

Juventus was demoted to Serie B in the wake of the incident, and even victory for the national side in the 2006 World Cup could not fully restore pride to Italian soccer. 3. Billion-dollar babies It was soccer's decade of decadence as money flowed throughout the sport like never before. Monstrous television deals enticed heavyweight investors such as Roman Abramovich (Chelsea) and Malcolm Glazer (Man Utd) and meant the biggest clubs could splash cash on countless star players. Real Madrid's Galacticos led the way in the wealth stakes at the beginning and end of the 2000s, regularly targeting the world's best in blockbuster transfers including a world-record $131 million for Cristiano Ronaldo. At Chelsea, Abramovich turned a club that was teetering on the brink of financial disaster into one of the richest in Europe with one flick of his fountain pen in 2003. 2. David Beckham joins Major League Soccer When the news first popped up on the news bulletins, many in Europe refused to believe it. David Beckham, the most famous soccer player on the planet, leaving Real Madrid to join the Los Angeles Galaxy? But it was true. The Galaxy and MLS had pulled off a spectacular coup by tempting Beckham to come to North America in a move designed to revolutionize soccer in the United States. Beckham's arrival was greeted by a whirlwind of hype and publicity, with more than 600 journalists showing up for his gala unveiling at the Home Depot Centre. Beckham's switch to MLS has been widely argued as a costly flop. 1. The headbutt Let's just say it wasn't meant to end like this. Zinedine Zidane's spectacular international career came to a screeching halt on the biggest stage of all when he was sent off in the 2006 World Cup final with the French locked in a 1-1 tie with Italy. Following alleged racial provocation from Italian defender Marco Materazzi, the two-time World Footballer of the Year turned and head-butted Materazzi in the chest, sending him sprawling to the turf. Italy went on to win the title in a penalty shootout, leaving one of the game's all-time greats to rue the moment of madness that would become one of the most notorious incidents in World Cup history. Watch the head-butt here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAjWi663kXc&feature=player_embedded

Edition 6 May 18 COACHES BOX

Lets Hear it for the Late Big Tiny: Bummer!! We lost 4-2 after twice clawing our way back from a goal down only to concede two in stoppage time. Double Bummer!! We missed enough chances to win two games. Triple Bummer!! For the second consecutive match Football Federation Tas failed to secure a referee for our match. This meant that once again I was obliged to referee the second half. In the first half after doing a good job of refereeing their coach blew for half-time about seven minutes early. His justification for this was that we had started ten minutes late and there was another match scheduled to start immediately afterwards. The match did indeed start ten minutes late even though we were ready to start at the appointed hour of 9am after journeying from Cygnet while their locals whiled away ten minutes in the change room. I did add seven minutes to the second half after rousing them from their half slumber by loudly blasting on the whistle from outside their change-room window. Anyway, we were finished in time for the subsequent game to start so the lopsided affair (twenty eight minutes first half, forty two minutes second half) was a tad unnecessary. Anyway none of these shenanigans would have occurred in Tiny Whartons day. He was a colossal man who refereed countless Celtic Rangers Cup Finals in the 60s and 70s and he didnt take any nonsense. He was an impressive six foot four in height and though thanks to our high protein diets six foot four is merely average height (for a woman) these days, back in the 1960s six foot four was not far short of six foot five. Alas our Tiny passed away in 2005 and therefore yours truly was obliged to drag his fat, ageing, fifty two year old carcass from one end of the field to the other in a miserable attempt to keep some sort of track of proceedings. As to the match it was a fifty fifty match which didnt fall for us on this occasion. Much of our play, ie, combinations, through balls and counterattacking was an improvement on previous weeks so its all coming together. Our defense mostly held firm, our opponents didnt create many chances but they were just a bit more clinical than us in converting said chances. Im sure this coming week will be better but please FFT send us a ref even the ghost of Big Tiny will do. U14 Division D Result New Town 4-2 Cygnet (Rowan 1, Christian 1). Yours, The Coaches Box

Edition 6 May 18 THE ROYAL RANT

THE GEORGE AWARD Last year was the first year of the George Award. The George is an award given to the Fairest & Best Player in a team over the season. It is good to celebrate goals scorers but this is one aspect of the game. There is very good reason to celebrate character as well as skill, defenders, goalies and mid-fielders as well as forwards. It is called The George as we thought it a fitting tribute to the founder of the club. Last year's winners were fantastic examples of why we have this award and I strongly believe that it is a good thing for kids to strive to be not just the "best", but to also develop character in sport. Now that we have the season under control we will once again begin voting for our fairest and best players in each team. Coaches, I'd ask you all to submit your votes with your team's game report to Dave. The system is a 3, 2, 1 vote for each game and Dave will keep tallies for each team. Any questions please call me on 0417 362 153 or drop me an email parishtravel@yahoo.com CLINIC Once again thanks to all those who helped out with the clinic, especially Chris Atkinson and Alby Hooper. We'll be making this an annual event for U9s to Youth players, and we'll develop the clinic to be better each time. We'll also be conducting a milder end-of-year clinic with a slightly different theme, which we also hope to make an annual event. Cheers Rod

Edition 6 May 18 Message for All Parents (and Kids):

If your child is unable to play for any reason please contact your team coach or reply to Dave Sayers who will pass message on as if we know in time we may be able to get a player from one of the other teams to double up and therefore we avoid playing short or having to borrow from the other team. Telephone numbers/email of team coaches above fixtures, results and scorers item 9.

7. Canteen roster (Coordinator Alison Nicholas contact details below):

We are now calling for volunteers for canteen roster. Please let Alison know when you can volunteer. Volunteering for canteen is easy and a great way for soccer parents to catch up with others! This weekend we have seven home games. If each family (without coaching commitments) can help out one Saturday during the term the canteen will run at its best (and most profitable). Instructions for Volunteers: What to do? One of the volunteers needs to buy/bring : -500ml milk -4 loaves of bread -dozen free range eggs (to go with our free range bacon!!!) -sliced onion Please work out who will do this amongst your group. Please take along 2 tea towels, and the receipts for the items above so you can get your money back. Bacon and sausages are supplied by Alison (thanks to Boks and Nicholas butchery) at training on Friday or Saturday morning. If more sausages etc. are required on the day they can be purchased locally in Cygnet. Please arrive 15mins before first game starts. When you get there the canteen will be unlocked. All the stock and supplies are in plastic boxes on the table. Setup; cook bacon first, and eggs to order for the egg and bacon sangers; cook onion and sausages, serve then clean up and put everything back. It is always fantastic if there are home-made muffins, scones or biscuits but only bring these if you want to... Thanks for your support! Alison Nicholas ph. 0429307858 ajnicoft@hotmail.com

Edition 6 May 18 8. Match Reports Cygnet U/6

It was a close game and we were unlucky to lose. The team had quite a few moments of greatness, as our little soccer stars get the hang of it. Abby had a great game and stopped the Southern Christian College attackers on quite a few occasions, also pulled of a beautiful pass to Archie. Archie was all over this game, he scored 2 goals and my gut feeling tells me we are just seeing the start of a great little player. William kicked his first goal for the season and is growing in confidence every time he plays. Flynn was in the thick of it and is starting to master those shiny new boots, every week he has stepped up a bit further. Charlie showed his great ball skills and scored a confidant goal. Great job team . Alby Cygnet U/6 5 lost to Southern Christian College 7 (Charlie Hooper 1, William Morgan 1, Archie Gill 2, own goal 1 )

Cygnet U/7 Green

A fantastic game with all 5 players scoring a goal (or three). Harry was in overdrive, keeping up his usual post in defense but also getting up front at times to set up one goal and score another (his first goal ever!). Rory also seemed to have a confidence spurt, driving the ball through the pack and also scoring a goal. Ben performed a beautiful save and was his usual determined self, showing fantastic focus and drive. Tommy was the goal-scoring machine. He quickly made up for his late entrance by scoring three goals. Huon was not to be left out of scoring and made the final moment of the match by putting one in JUST as Time was called. Well done Cygnet U7's white! It was an exciting game to watch. Welcome to Billy joining the team. You played a great first game. Kingborough Lions were well schooled with their passing and calling for the ball. It was a close game and a shame the Lions scored an own goal. They made us work for possession of the ball and we had to fight hard for our win. Well done everybody! Edition 6 May 18
The only thing dodgy during this match was the coachs calf muscle. It was a display of domination territory wise as our goal keepers would attest to. Both Zac and Holly had no more than two touches each throughout the match. Photo of Zac kicking back can be seen on page 7 Whilst we dominated control of the game, credit must go to Calvin who somehow seemed to keep us at bay with their whole team in front of goals. It was not until the last 5 minutes of the first half that the 50 shots at goal was broken with Lauren slotting one away. Holly followed this up to see us up 2-0 at HT. The second half was the same, with the Calvin goal keeper pulling off some cracking stops with a number of bullets somehow finding his legs. Little Ethan is starting to show some strong dribbling skills and a number of times came out of the hustle to terrorise the goalkeeper and was rewarded with a fine finish into the nets. Big Ethan shot from a tight angle past the keeper and Tristan put away his habitat of booting the ball to run and dribble and see it into the back of the net. Another fine display from these kids and it is good to see them not bunching up. A little more practice on passing and showing confidence with dribbling and they will be untouchable. A very minor comment considering the last time some of these kids experienced defeat was 21 May 2011 (and their only ever defeat). You kids are awesome The Rambler Cygnet U/8 Green 5 def Calvin 0 (Ethan S 1, Ethan H 1, Lauren 1, Holly 1, Tristan 1)

It appears that this team enjoys tough and tense matches this match being a replica of the first game of the season where the result was unknown right to the end. Captain Steady Toby at centre back, marshalled his defense well by talking and telling his left and right backs to spread out and to move forward and back as a unit within our defensive half. New chum Callum had a few touches in his first match and was not overawed by the occasion. Sofie, Sasha, Jack and Archie also played defence over the course of the game and were good support for Toby. The goalkeeping roles were split between Sasha and Toby and whilst there no spectacular saves performed they were both solid and took the correct options to kick, throw or catch, when needed. In attack Otis, Joshua and Griffin were wholehearted. A back heel by Jack started a downfield movement which almost resulted in a goal; Griffin demonstrated good control of the ball with both his head and chest; Otis was Mr Everywhere and Joshua cleared a goal mouth scramble which had Margate scored, would have resulted in a tied match. A big accolade must go to Archie playing in the uncustomary role as striker. He was tenacious. This will be the 3rd year that I have coached him and this was his best match to date.

The game still looked like a bunch of seagulls around a hot chip so Michaela and I still have to get everyone to trap the ball, look up, make space and develop some rudimentary passing. A long trek north to the Showgrounds in Glenorchy for the U9 Whites to play against St Therese's. After a makeshift pitch was set up with some confusing (or missing) line-markings, at least for the umpire, the Cygnets Whites settled in to play. It was a fast game with the first goal scored by Codi. St Therese's evened the score and then went on for two more in the first half. Riley put one away right on the half-time whistle - the first goal he had scored, in his first game playing for the team. Saras did a great job as goalie in the first half with great defence support from the team. Second half we kicked into the wind so aimed to kept the ball on the ground. Toby made a few brilliant saves as goalie, clearing the ball out well up the pitch, but unfortunately was unlucky in letting a couple of balls towards the end get passed. Ned played a fast and consistent game and was unlucky not to be rewarded with a goal after a near miss. Romy, Elliot, Ina and Rory all showed moments of greatness which we will aim to harness next week into a victory for the team. St Therese's played a fast and compact game, the Whites played with equal individual skill but lacked a little in supporting each other as a team. The final score not really reflecting the quality of the team's skill and effort. Cygnet Sea Dragons 2 lost to St Thereses 7 (Codi 1, Riley 1)

Saturday was a day of lessons for the U10 Div 1 team. Its always hard when we're beaten by a lessor team. Its been a steep learning curve for everyone, especially the coach, and Saturday confirmed the need for greater structure in our game. Training sessions will be very different from here on in. We missed three or four very easy opportunities that we would have converted any other day, and we didn't get one lucky bounce, but that's the nature of soccer. Well, what a difference a few weeks makes. It appears that the coaching clinic and Rod's "take no rubbish" approach at training has inspired the boys and girls to step up a notch in their game apainst West Hobart at home. The team were keen showing up early and putting in some practice before the game. The early part of the match was even with both sides breaking through with opportunities at their respective goals. The backline of Hamish (goalie), Sadie and Molly was kept busy keeping the opposition at bay, ably backed up by the midfield of Toby, Will and Fynn. However, West Hobart were able to slot one away giving them a one/nil advantage at half time. However the second half proved to be all Cygnet with the front line of Marley and Issac joined by the midfield to constantly harass the defence of West Hobart and their perseverance paid off with Will claiming 2 goals. We were fortunate also to have Kai, Brodie and Kieran sub for our team after having earlier played their own match, and their pace and enthusiasm on the pitch was very much appreciated with Kieran slotting one away to give the team a 3/1 victory. A great effort by the team....well done. Cygnet Sea Dragons White 3 def West Hobart Red 1 (Will 2, Kieran S 1)

U/12 Sea Dragons

Although the result was against us this Saturday, the team played their best performance so far this season. It was always going to be a tough game against a solid South Hobart team and with the added injuries before the game we needed to field two players from the U10's (thanks Jake and Flynn) just to make our starting eleven, so we could start the match on an even keel. Against all odds, we played Liam in goal even though it's a new position for him (and he was brilliant) it was only a dubious offside/time keeping decision at the very end of the first half that put us a goal down. But we took it on the chin, as for most of the first period despite South Hobart's clever play going forward, we were able to break them down and had more corner kicks and chances in front of goal. Their second goal was against the play in the second half, but we never gave in and I was so proud of the team as Kai took it past their keeper and slotted in our first goal of the season. It was well deserved as Kai had run his socks off down the wing and in midfield all match. As had everyone in a Cygnet shirt in the second half and now it was 1-2. The game turned and we really were controlling the play and it looked as though it was going our way and heading to at least a draw or a possible win when we were undone by a well taken shot by South Hobart that left Liam, our new keeper unsighted as the ball bobbled into the corner. It was a tragedy and definitely not what we deserved. But again, I have to reiterate that everyone put in a solid shift today, including Jake and Flynn from the U10's. Let's remember we had 11 players who played doggedly for the full match with no substitutions, so no breathers or time to rest. A solid improvement from the U12's and I expect a victory next match when we get our missing players back. We get better with each game and the team is beginning to come together really well, so all in all I'm really happy with the performance and the commitment of the team this weekend, we just need to keep scoring now we've finally got one on the board.
