Shell Eco-marathon Urban Concept

Eco-marathon History
The competition began in 1939 as a friendly challenge between Shell research scientists in the United States Though the competition started in the United State, it soon moved to Europe with the first international competition in the UK in 1977. The current version of the competition took form in 1985 and has been conducted annually since with an expansion to the Americas and most recently Asia. Though the competition has always been about efficiency, the rules continue to inspire innovation and change each year to foster new technologies and ideas For further information please see: http://www.shell.com/home/content/ ecomarathon/about/

Urban-Concept Competition
The Eco-marathon competition is divided between the Prototype class and the Urban Concept class Whereas the Prototype vehicles compete to achieve the highest efficiency, the Urban Concept vehicles must also consider real-world drivability and design Additional considerations include: Wet weather driving Stop-and-go traffic Headlights, turn signals and other indicators

2012 Vehicle
The Vehicle

Body and Chassis Skateboard aluminum honeycomb chassis with rear fuel cell mount and aluminum firewall/rollbar Hand molded, wet layup carbon fiber body

Brakes, Steering, and Suspension Pitman arm steering system with Ackerman geometry 4 wheel, 7.5 in disc brakes with dual circuit master cylinder

Powertrain 5 kW PEM fuel cell coupled to two wheel hub motors through two separate motor controllers

Future Vision
The Competition Our Approach Our Vehicle

Design and fabricate a vehicle that is exceedingly efficient, roadworthy, and in accordance with Ecomarathon rules.

Design a vehicle that is more than capable of meeting the Eco-marathon requirements while also being comfortable and practical for road use.

A modular vehicle design capable of incorporating a fuel cell as well as a diesel powertrain in a lightweight, aerodynamic, monocoque chassis/body.

Our Goal: Produce a vehicle that not only meets the requirements of the competition but is capable of being operated in normal driving conditions within normal parameters

The Design
Powertrain Short Term Goals
Design and fabricate a working vehicle fit for competition and in accordance to all rules Mid-engine, modular layout with the ability to utilize either a 5kW fuel cell in conjunction with an electric motor, regenerative braking, and ultra-capacitors or an efficient turbocharged diesel engine coupled to a continuously variable transmission.

Long Term Goals

Perfect the design and produce a vehicle capable of normal urban operation as well as competition participation

Suspension/Brakes/Stearing
MacPherson strut suspension for added comfort High performance, ultra-low friction bearings Rack and pinion steering 4 wheel, hydraulic, disk brakes

Body/Chassis
Monocoque chassis composed of a carbon fiber passenger cell and aluminum front and rear subframes Aerodynamic carbon fiber body optimized for maximum airflow to the engine compartment

Sponsorship: Benefits
We thank you for taking the time to review this team material and hope that you have learned more about our teams ambitions. This is only the second year for the University of Illinois Urban Concept team and we are very much looking forward to partnering with {Enter Name Here}. Last year was the first for our team and we did extraordinarily well. We took first place in our class and currently hold the Americas efficiency record in our division. With your support and our previous experiences we hope to do even better by producing a more efficient and more innovative vehicle in the coming year. We see a partnership between {Enter Name Here} and the Illini EcoConcept team as a mutually beneficial arrangement. By supporting our team, you will be able to form relationships with the brightest students at the University of Illinois. As participants in the Eco-marathon competition, these individuals have the utmost knowledge of engineering fundamentals as well as practical, hands on knowledge of product design, fabrication, and testing. These students learn to see a product through from the initial design to the final implementation while working in a interdisciplinary group to solve numerous challenges along the way. By supporting our team you will have access to these individuals with extensive leadership experiences and the will to succeed. While the networking opportunities provided to you are an integral part of a partnership with the Illini EcoConcept Team, we also see your support as an opportunity for you to demonstrate your dedication to innovation and the belief that opportunities such as the Shell Eco-marathon Competition help outgoing students become outstanding professional. By creating an environment of innovation and education, events, such as this, raise awareness in the community, foster creativity, and develop the next generation of engineers who will ultimately be responsible for the products and technologies we will all rely on in the future. Again, thank you for taking the time to review this presentation and for your support in the past. Below, you will find a detailed description of our various sponsorship packages. Any support, whether monetary, logistic, material, or advisory would be most appreciated. A preliminary budget for this year and a timeline for the major goals we must accomplish can also be found below. With the support of {Enter Name Here} we will be that much closer to accomplishing these goals and, therefore, that much closer to fulfilling our vision.
