Introduction

The new Caterpillar 385B and 385B L hydraulic excavators are direct replacements for the Cat 375 and 375L. They feature increased engine power and state-of-the-art Cat electronic technologies for improved performance. The 385B and 385B L incorporate the Vital Information Display System (VIDS), a user-friendly interface for man-machine communication via a language display monitor and the electronic power management control, which includes Advanced Diesel Engine Module (ADEM II). This bulletin compares the features, benefits and specifications of the Cat 385B and 385B L to the Hitachi EX800H-V. These updated Cat models set a new standard of excellence and significantly increase our advantages over the competition in the following areas: productivity, durability, versatility, ease of operation and serviceability.

Competition

EX800H-V Overview
The Hitachi EX800H-V is a heavy-duty version of the EX750-V. The EX750-V and John Deere JD750 are sister models. The EX800H-V has the following advantages over the EX750-V and JD750: Operator Station - A square cab is used instead of a rounded cab. A head guard is mounted on the roof of the cab. Boom - Thicker plates are used for the boom. Stick - Thicker plates are used for the stick with a wear plate welded under the nose of the stick to prevent denting from rocks. Bottom guards - Heavy-duty bottom guards are used.

Production Study
Caterpillar conducted a production study with the Cat 385B and Hitachi EX800H-V on a quarry job site. The configurations of the machines are shown in the table above. Overburden was used for the study with a material density estimated at 1.8 ton/m3 (3000 lb/yd3). The Cat 385B was equipped with a 3.5m3 (4.58 yd3) bucket, and the EX800H-V was equipped with a 3.3 m3 (4.32 yd3) bucket, which has about 6 percent smaller capacity than the 385B bucket. The cycle time was measured using a portable computer. Fuel consumption was measured using a portable fuel tank. Fuel consumed was measured by weight and then converted to volume. The fuel density was dependent on the ambient temperature; therefore, fuel density and temperature were measured frequently.

Truck Loading
A 150-metric ton capacity truck scale was used to weigh the 773B OffHighway Truck, which was loaded by the excavators during the test. The bench height was 4 meters (13 ft.) with the truck set below the bench. The 385B and the EX800H-V loaded the materials in a 90-degree swing application. The results are summarized in the table above. The 385B demonstrated 13.6 percent more productivity than the EX800H-V, resulting from faster cycle times and a larger bucket fill factor. The fuel consumption for the EX800H-V was about 8 percent less than the 385B; however, the fuel efficiency for the 385B was 8 percent better than the Hitachi excavator due to the Cat machines higher productivity.

Durability

Cat 385B Track Frame a) The track frame is made of 18 mm (0.71 in.) thick steel plate. b) The dimensions of the track frame are 475 mm (18.7 in.) high and 670 mm (26.4 in.) wide. c) The track frame is made with a box-type construction, providing more rigidity for bending and torsional stress than the U channel construction. d) Track frame uses the same type of construction as that used on Cat 365B L.

Hitachi EX800H-V Track Frame a) The track frame is made of 14 mm (0.55 in.) thick steel plate. b) The dimensions of the track frame are 465 mm (18.3 in.) high and 660 mm (26 in.) wide. c) The track frame is made with U channel construction. 115-mm (4.53 in.) wide steel plates are welded to the edges of the U channel. d) Track frame type is the same as that used on the Caterpillar 300 Family mid-size class hydraulic excavators.

Durability

Cat 385B Carbody a) The vertical plate on the carbody is made of 50.2 mm (1.98 in.) thick plate for the center portion and 45.2 mm (1.78 in.) thick plates for the leg portions. b) The height of the carbody is 457 mm (17.99 in.). c) The swing bearing is directly mounted on the carbody. This construction allows for smoother transfer of loads from the front linkage to the track roller frame. d) The swing bearing is a cross roller bearing type. The cross roller bearing has more strength and less pitching of upper structure than the ball bearing type because of wider contact area.

Hitachi EX800H-V Carbody a) The vertical plate on the carbody is made of 40.2 mm (1.58 in.) thick plate for the center portion and 45 mm (1.77 in.) thick plates for the leg portions. b) The height of the carbody is 420 mm (16.54 in.). c) The swing bearing is mounted on the carbody via a swing bearing support column, which is the same design as that used on the Caterpillar 300 Family mid-size class hydraulic excavators. d) The swing bearing is a ball bearing type.
