Arvada Police Department CR 99-12067 thac will correspond with
Jefferson County Sheriff's Department CR 99-1625 regarding the
shootings/murders at Columbine aigh School on 04/20/99,
The followins supplement is an evaluatlon of polygraph charts
that ~ere produced as a result of ~atthew Nalty, DaB 04/15/81, and
James Brunetti, DOS 10/28/80, being administered polygraph
examinations regarding the Columbine High School shootings/murders
that occurred on 04/20/99. la, Detective Jim Vonderohe, is a
member of the columbine High School Task Force which is
investigating this tragic event, One of the p~imary objectives of
the task force is to determine wheeher or not any other person
besides E~ic Harri$ and Oylan Klebold were involved in any way in
the planning l preparation or participation of this criminal act,
As the SWAT teams began their sea. en of tne school shortly
after the shootings were reported, Matthew NaltYt James arunetti
and Matthew Akard, 006 O~/29/al, were contacted in Clement Park
near Columbine aigh School by police officers as they were
approaching the school. Due ~o che fact that these three
individuals appeared $imila~ to the physical descriptions of the
attackers in the school, the aforementioned subjects were detained
and quescioned oy the police. Thei~ decainmene waS monitored by
national television outlets which resulted in Matthew Nalty and
James Srunetti being flown to New York City in order co pcssibly
appear on the sally Jesse Raphael television show. Apparently a
precondition to them appearing on tha show was the requirement that
they submit to a polyg~aph examination in order to determine that
they had no criminal involvement in the Columbine HiSh scheol
massacres.
Investigator Duane Eaton (ArVada police Departmentl I a
Columbine Kigh School Task Force member, determined that Matthew
Nalty and James Brunetti, were administered polygraph examinations
by R. Michael Martin. Mr. Mar,in is associated with Pr~ority
Investigations, Inc· t 553 Main Street, Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania,

from these examinations.
Investigator Eaton received the aforementioned reqUested items
from Mr. Martin with an accompanying letter dated May ~4, ~999.
Mr. Mar~in indicated in the letter that he was an associate member
of the American Polygraph Association and completed his polygraph
training at the New York School of Lie Oetection in 1984 (certified
in 1985I. The letter further stated that che examination of each
subject lasted 90 minutes and included one acquaintance te$t/ a
specific nyou phase ll examination and an exploratory examination.

Association and the American Association of Police Polygraphists!
was requested to perform a quality control examination of all the
submitted items regarding the polygraph e~aminations of Matthew
Nalt:y a.nd. James Brunetti.
In reviewing the items submitted by Mr. Martin, his report
indioated that both subjeot. claimed in their pretest interview
that they \Nalty and Brunet til , alons with Matthe~ Akard. were at
Brunetti's apartment when ~hey heard about the shootings at
Columbine High School from Brunetti'. sister. They decided to go
to the ichool to determine ~f their friends who attend the school
may have been injured. It should be noted that none of the three
individual$ were students at Columbine Hi~h school. The =eport
further seated that upon thei~ a~rival in the school's vicinity,
they were accost ad by the police. questioned and later released.
They denied any involvemene and knowledge in the shooting incident
at the school.
Mr. Martinis report indicated that the relevant questions
asked of both suhjeets in the Bac!<ster Direet Involvement "you

It was Mr. Mart.in.'s opinion that Matth.ew Nalty's f1no'l response
to the relevant quescions indicated for him to be answering
trut.hful to ehem, all except fot' relevant question "e, lO whl.ch.
scored in the llinconclusivl!" range. Mr. Martin opined that MAt.thew

INVESTIGATION, JC.001. 007437

On Tuesday, April 20, 1999 at arOund 1300 hours I responded to the

Jefferson County Sheriff' a command post regarding the shooting at

1
Columbine High School. While on scene, three young men were taken
into custody in the area of the park that were similar in appearance
to the possible suspects in this shooting. One of the persons taken
into custody was a James Brunetti. Jeffco S.O. Sergeant Pat Woodin
requested I interview Mr. Brunetti.

At 1359 hours I entered a van were Brunetti was seated. He was

cuffed and being escorted by Jeffco S.O. Deputy A. R. Walker. His
property was already in a bag and I was handed his Colorado I. D. He
said he only heard about the shooting. His hands were then bagged
for a GSR collection kit.

I then read Mr. Brunetti his rights per Miranda reading from my
pre-printed card. When asked if he understood his rights he
replied, "Yes." When asked if he would tell his side of the story
he replied, "Oh , yeah." Brunetti then told me the following:

* He lives with his mother, Joanie, and his sister, Jannine. His
mother works at C.U. Boulder but he did not know in what capacity.

* He came with two friends of his; Matt Akard who he described as

his best friend and lived on Gray Court in Arvada, and Matt Nalty
who he described as a good friend who lives in Broomfield and drove
the three of them to the scene in his white car, unknown model.

* When asked what he was doing this date from the time .he woke
up, he said he had stayed the night at Matt Akard's home. They woke
up around 10:00 a.m. and Matt Nalty called over there around 10:30
a.m. They had all planned on going to a concert in Littleton for a
band called, "Drop kick Murphy.'

* He needed cigarettes so they all met over at his hOllSe. While

there, the news of the shooting was on television. He said his
sister was watching the television and they talked about his
sister's ex-boyfriend named Anson who attended Columbine High. They
wondered if he was okay so they decided to drive into the area and
see what was going on.

2 Jc.oQ1- 007438
* He said they approached scme cops to ask questions then the
cops took them into custody with weapons drawn.

Mr. Brunetti then was taken by another van where a GSR kit was
completed. The three young men were then released and told to leave
the scene.

Mr. Brunetti was extremely cooperative and said he understood what

waS going on due to the seriousness of the situation.

Within the next few days I received a call from Mr. Brunetti saying
that the cops were following him and he wanted SOme kind of written
statement that he and his friends were no longer suspects. I also
received a message to call Matt Nalty who also was saying he wanted
to be officially cleared. I made no follow-up calls to Mr. Malty.

This concluded my involvement with Mr. Brunetti.

he was aware of what was taking place over at the school and if he
had been able to observe any of the activi~y. They advised
Investigator Eaton that when this male could not provide any

Cecilia Hicks Grossmann, DOB 06/21/1951, 3221 Shalimar
Terrace, Pueblo, Colorado, telephone (719)562-9136, was
telephonically interviewed by Special Agent (SA) Ricky V_ Wright
regarding the incident that took place on 04/20/1999 at Columbine
High School. After being advised as to the identity of the
interviewing agent and the nature of the interview, Grossmann
provided the following information:
On 04/20/1999, at approximately 11:30 am, Grossmann
went ~o the residence of Marilyn Taylor, 6526 South Teller Court,
Littleton, Colorado, to pick up some items from Taylor_
Grossmann was in the residence until approximately 11:40 am. As
Taylor and Grossmann were walking to Grossmann's car, Brooks
Brown ran up to the house and asked if he could use the
telephone. Taylor went and retrieved her cordless phone from the
house.
Brown was really nervous and related that he had just
come from the school. Brown had met an ex-friend of his outside
of the school. The ex-friend told Brown that he liked him and
that he ought to leave the school. Brown thought this ex-friend
was crazy and did not know what he was going to do . Brown's ex-
friend just turned 18 years old and Brown thought that he was
getting a gun for his birthday. Brown did not say how his ex-
friend was going to get the gun. Brown did not say what the name
of the ex-friend was. Brown said as he was getting away from the
school, he heard some shots, but did not know what was happening.
Brown wanted to call the Sheriff as well, but Taylor and
Grossmann encouraged him to just call his parents. Brown was
unable to contact his mother by telephone, but was able to reach
his father. Brown made arrangements with his father to pick him
up in the neighborhood near Taylor's house.
This was the first Taylor and Grossmann had heard of
the shooting. Grossmann had driven by the school at
approximately 11:25 am and had seen some students milling around
outside, bUt did not know what was going on.
