My plan to engage parents includes a parents survey, an open door policy, and monthly newsletters.

A parent survey will be given at the beginning of the year to learn more about the child. The survey will include questions about the students likes, dislikes, struggles and strengths. This will be informative to add to the student survey because the parents might communicate details the child left out. The parents survey is also helpful because it shows parents that you care about their child as a whole and desire them to succeed. Parents will be more likely to support and respect a teacher that expresses a genuine interest in their child. This parent survey is a great first impression of my character as an educator their child will be interacting with. Starting off on the right foot can benefit future interactions throughout the school year. The second tool to engage parents is by an open door policy. At the end of the parent survey there will be a statement addressing my open door policy for students and parents. This will address the hours I am in my classroom that students and/or parents are welcome to come and ask questions. This will assure parents I am transparent about what goes on in the classroom and am very willing to address any questions or issues. The open door policy will also make it clear to parents that students are welcome to come in for help or to ask questions it is needed. The third tool to engage parents is monthly newsletters sent home. These newsletters will discuss the current topics being covered in class and the significance of examining these topics. This is included so that parents are fully informed of what students are learning. It is interesting and informative for parents who struggle to get their children to discuss class. The newsletters will also contain a description of big assignments or due dates that are coming up. Parents appreciate being told about big assignments and due dates in order to be aware of what their children are working on and keep their children accountable. The newsletter can also include events that are going on around the community which are significant for class or apply to content learned in class.
