The Department of which you will be part

At Dame Alice Owens School, Mathematics holds an important part in the academic curriculum. The Department is stable, with 7 full-time and 5 part-time members, all well qualified and mostly very experienced. It is Departmental policy for staff to teach across the full range of age and ability, and each teacher is allocated some responsibility within the Department. Examination results are exceptional, with around 70% of students gaining grades A or A* at GCSE in summer 2012. Over 40% of the Sixth Form choose to study A/S and A-level Maths, with a wide variety of mixes of the Application to go with the Core. The Department now has eight adjacent, full-sized, classrooms, all equipped with interactive whiteboards, and a staff workroom. At present there are two sets of 16 laptops, on trolleys, for class use. The Department has always been very well funded.

The Maths teaching programme The Schools is heavily over-subscribed, with just over 200 students in each year, of whom 33% are admitted by academic selection. In Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4, there are three one-hour lessons per week. Year 7 students are in fixed teaching groups for all classroom subjects, although one group is split for Mathematics, after which loose setting is introduced by the Department and this is progressively refined. The Year 7, 8 and 9 Schemes of Work are in line with the National Numeracy Strategy. Each pupil has her/his own textbook: Key Stage 3: GCSE Higher: ST(P) Maths by Bostock and Chandler mainly, or Framework Maths (Oxford) for some Maths for Edexcel GCSE by Bank and Alcorn, or GCSE Maths Higher (Oxford)

Foundation: Edexcel Modular GCSE (Heinemann) These are supplemented by other textbooks and there are considerable common resources that have been built up over time and which are continually being expanded. It is planned that students have the same teacher from year 8 into Year 9, and again for Years 10 into 11. We have eight A-Level sets in Year 12, and seven in Year 13 of these there are three further maths classes in Year 12 and two further maths classes in Year 13. We follow the Edexcel Mathematics syllabus and offer our students modules in Pure Mathematics as well as two out of Mechanics, Statistics and Decision. Naturally, the Further Maths groups do extra modules, we currently run two Further Maths course, Mechanics (C1, C2, C3, S1, M1, M2, C4, C4, M3, FP1, M4, FP2, FP3) and Statistics (C1, C2, C3, S1, M1, M2, C4, C4, M3, FP1, M4, FP2, FP3). For the Core (Pure) Maths, we use Pearson/Longman AS and A2 books and the Heinemann series for the Applications. Modular exams are sat, as appropriate, throughout the course. Staff are encouraged to expand their areas of expertise at A-Level. In 2012/13, the student and group numbers are: Year 12 Year 13 Further 45, in 3 groups 35, in 2 groups C1, C2, M1 13 28, in 2 groups C1, C2, S1 33, in 2 groups 14 C1, C2, S1 26, in 2 groups 22 C1, C2, S1 15
