The Pitmen Painters

The Ashington Group 1934–1984
William Feaver
• New in paper
Featuring the paintings of the Ashington Group—a group
of miners from an isolated village in New England who
took an art class in the 1930s—this unique history chroni-
cles how appreciation of their work spread, how they were
tracked down by documentary photographers and film-
makers, and how they resisted interference from the
socioanthropological Mass Observation movement.
Inspired by the world around them, including work at the
mine, hobbies, recreations, domestic chores, and World
War II, the pitmen’s collection eventually toured Europe
and China and found a home in the Woodhorn Colliery
Museum. Prompting playwright Lee Hall to stage a the-
atrical production based on the Ashington Group, this
story and the work associated with it are not only moving,
but extraordinary.
William Feaver is a painter, writer, curator, and founding
trustee of the Ashington Group collection. He is a former
art critic for the Observer and the author of Frank
Auerbach and Lucian Freud.
