Lost Stories in the Discovery of Antarctica
John Harrison
A mix of history, geography, myth, and personal truth, this book
explores the Antarctic Peninsula, the South Shetland Islands, and
the Weddell Sea—the most visited places in Antarctica. Filled with
beautiful photographs by the author from his travels, this record
offers a selection of anecdotal accounts of the merchantmen, navy
men, sealers, whalers, and aviators who, along with scientists and
adventurers, drew the first ghostly maps of the white continent.
It delves into the heads and hearts of those who were driven to
discover the unknown land and is ideal for the armchair traveler
who wants to explore the continent’s past and present.
John Harrison is the author of Cloud Road and is a reviewer for
the Mail on Sunday and the New Welsh Review. He is the recipi-
ent of the Wales Book of the Year Award and the winner of the
inaugural Alexander Cordell Travel Writing Competition.

Excerpt:
The first time I went to Patagonia, I didn’t know a soul there. I only meant to go once,
for a couple of weeks, to look at the place. I didn’t know it would work its way under
my skin until I would always be homesick for it, always come back to it. I didn’t know
that it was going to change me, draw me out of myself. I fell in love with Patagonia
from afar: with the story of the people who had left Wales a century and a half before
to follow a dream and live in this place on the other side of the earth.
I thought of it as Y Wladfa: the place of the Welsh settlement. Over time, I came to
know its other inhabitants, who had been there before the Welsh, and who are still
there today: the indigenous Tehuelche and Mapuche nations. Entirely unprepared, I
stumbled upon their history, a seldom-told story of genocide five generations ago. I met
freedom fighters and traumatised survivors of ethnic cleansing; people determined their
culture should not die.
I could not have foreseen where this journey would eventually take me as I travelled
ever further into Patagonia: to a night by an open fire under the stars, deep in the
foothills of the Andes.

Bradley Wiggins
Tour de Force
John Deering
Abandoned by his professional cyclist father as a toddler, Bradley
Wiggins rose from an inner-city background to become a prodi-
gious talent. World Junior Champion, World Champion, and
Olympic Champion were all titles he earned at a startlingly young
age, but what he really wanted was success on the road. “Wiggo’s”
reinvention on the path to becoming Britain’s first Tour de France
winner in more than 100 years of racing is one of sport’s most
uplifting and inspiring stories. This captivating and insightful nar-
rative journeys with Wiggins as he races along the thousands of
kilometers of French tarmac and tells of his brutal procession
from Liege to Paris in counterpoint to his fascinating life. From a
Kilburn council estate to the Champs Elysees via the Olympics,
the legend of Bradley Wiggins is unraveled here like never before.
John Deering is the author of Team on the Run and a contributor
to various publications, including The Official Tour de France
Guide, Procycling, and Ride Cycling Review.
