Michael Childers was the life partner of
legendary English film director John
Schlesinger (Midnight Cowboy, Marathon
Man) for 30 years.

This updated and expanded collection spans the

career of renowned American photographer
Michael Childers, including many photographs pub-
lished for the first time. Working mostly with black-
and-white film, Childers has captured the icons and
legends of popular culture and the art world for
decades. His stunning portraits include Natalie
Wood, Clint Eastwood, Rock Hudson, and Carol
Channing. Several portraits are of special impor-
tance because they were taken early in the actors’
careers, before they became celebrities: Sissy
Spacek, Demi Moore, John Travolta, and Arnold
Schwarzenegger. Equally important are portraits of
the great film-industry legends who helped establish
and build the stars’ careers, including film directors
Icons and Legends Billy Wilder and John Schlesinger and costume de-
signer Edith Head. In addition to stars of the film
world, Childers has produced portraits of contem-

with the current American moment’s skewed no-

subjects is bracingly contemporary, including Gold
Star Mothers who’ve lost a child to war, nightshift

Herodotus, congressional discord, and league

an astute eye for cultural foibles. He maps his
poetic province from this welter, grappling with
Li Po’s quest for lyrical detachment as well as the
counter urge for communal engagement. These

caustic—pull no punches. They pose fundamental

which quickly spread around the world, marked a
turning point in the history of capitalism, this book
contends that the system will not bounce back and
will not return to the normal capitalist boom-and-
bust cycle. Using youth unemployment as a key
measure of stagnation of a system in decline, as
well as Marxist analytical tools, it shows how global
capitalism has reached a tipping point. Other fea-

only wrecking the environment, but has outgrown
the planet and threatens its very existence, nearing
a resurgence of global class struggle at levels not
seen since the 1930s.

capitalista normal de auge y contracción. Usando
el desempleo juvenil como una medida clave del
estancamiento de un sistema en declive, así como
herramientas analíticas marxistas, demuestra cómo
el capitalismo global ha llegado a un momento
crítico. Otros ejemplos demuestran la manera en la
