The Draw An Ad contest was truly an opportunity for my Art students to put their talents to work. My young Artists had a blast. To benefit from having the publisher and a commercial artist come in and present to each class how a newspaper works and how the Arts and artists fit into this real world was a meaningful lesson. The students learned how to design an ad using their unique perspective and skills coupled with their new knowledge of how to make it marketable. With the tremendous support of our local businesses my already talented students come away from this collaboration with a rich experience that I think will have an enduring impact for years to come. Thank you! Ray Gonzales
Winners
The students pictured each won a Gift Card to Target for their outstanding ads. From L to R: Brittney Tiangtrong (6th Grade), Ernie Torres (8th Grade), Taras Zbyshko (8th Grade), Malachi Green (6th Grade), and Nicole Gomes (6th Grade.

Ads by Kids, is our latest Lincoln News Messenger project, and its all about Lincoln businesses and how local kids view them! This fun project began with a suggestion from Kathy Dorsey, owner of Wardrobe, as an opportunity to get involved with local students. Ray Gonzales, a long-time art instructor at Twelve Bridges Middle School, liked our idea and made arrangements for myself and co-worker, Beth OBrien, to teach students in all five art classes how to create a good ad. They were shown the basics of what to put in an ad, how to find information about a company, the value of white space in an ad, graphics, and how to structure a sales offer. Under the guidance of Mr. Gonzales, the students ran with the idea and had an enjoyable experience. We also initiated a competition where a winner from each class was chosen by a third party. Each winner (pictured on page 2) received a $25 Target gift certificate.
We would like to thank Ray Gonzales and his art students for the time and effort that they put into this project! Sixth, seventh, and eighth-graders participated and each student did a great job! Where talent is concerned, age doesnt play into it as you can see by these great ads! My sales team, Brenda Thomas and Jennifer Parisius, and myself worked very hard to make sure that every business had a chance to see the ads that were created for them! These businesses were offered the opportunity to be a part of this unique publication and made every effort to participate as they could. You can view additional ads by visiting The Lincoln News Messenger Facebook Page. We hope you enjoy this special section and, if you would like your business represented next year, please e-mail messenger@goldcountrymedia.com or call 645-7733.

How did you go about researching the Business that you created your ad for? What did you think was the most fun about this project?
At the beginning of the project I didnt know much about Cornerstone Insurance, the business I drew the ad for. When I researched it I found out its a great Insurance company with great deals. The fun part about this project was, (everything!), researching it and choosing a picture to draw. But the most fun was drawing and coloring it! I hope I can keep doing this because I enjoyed it! I want to thank Mr. Gonzales, my art teacher, for everything hes done. Hes the best! Ernie Torres 8th grade

Researching Sierra Hay and Feed I did the Sierra Hay and Feed ad in the newspaper. When they were assigned to me I looked them up on the internet to see what they sold and what their logo was. When I found their logo/picture I thought it would be fun and a good idea to draw that for my ad. I was really excited too when I found out that I was the winner of my class, but even if I didnt win I still would have been happy because the entire experience was fun and great.
