Effect of Using Multi Media VCD (Video Compact Disc) as Media in Increasing Students Skills in Listening English Language

I. INTRODUCTION A. Background of Study Nowadays, English language is a necessity that must be owned by everyone. This is because English is the international language that often use present either in trade, business, and so forth. It is very important to master English as an international language. To gain a good result of English learning, people should take a good and effective ways because learning English as a foreign language is a complex task. Learning English as a foreign language is a difficult thing to do for most of the Indonesian students. It also takes a lot of time since English as a foreign language for them. The same condition also happens to very young learners who are the beginners in learning English. Vanessa Reilly & Sheila M. Ward ( 2003: 3 ) states that very young learners refer to children who have not yet started compulsory schooling and have not yet started to read. It means that it is really a new thing for them in learning English. It also means that the teacher needs more effort to teach them English. As young learners who enjoy having fun, and enjoy things with happy feeling, the students need more relaxing learning atmosphere, so they could join the English classes comfortably, and with high enthusiasm. It becomes the teachers tasks to make the situation comes true. The teacher needs some things to be involved in the English classes. In this case, listening is the material suitable for them. They will be easier to learn English language than using the method speaking, writing, and

reading. One of the instruments suitable for such students is to use multimedia such as VCD (video compact disc). the existence of multimedia tools such as VCD (video compact disc) make students become bored in the study because besides they can practice in listening English conversations , they can also watch the movie shown in the video. So they will be very interested in learning process and not get bored, as they usually do that just listen to the English conversations that played with a tape recorder or something like it. B. Purpose of Study The purpose of this study is to know the effect of using multimedia VCD (Video Compact Disc) in improving listening skills of English. C. Research Question 1. What is multimedia? Is there a significant effect on the students by using VCD (Video Compact Disc) in English listening subject?
