Graphic Design

Title: Zeitgeist-themed collage and immediate, functioning graphic design. Group: T.Y. No. of lessons: 4 - D per week. Pupils: 17 Time: 320mins - 80 mins per week. Aims: - Gain an introductory understanding of graphic design through working with collage. - Experience this subject through practical application and creation of a graphics piece, gaining awareness and appreciation for the design process. Overall Learning Outcomes: - Learn about graphics, use own understanding of what might constitute visual communication to investigate and complete A4 collage piece. Analyse and evaluate effectiveness and directness of communication within own work and that being shown. - Working to the level and pace of a designer, knowing whats important: clear and concise communication, experiment with different ways of representing an idea or characteristic ie. symbolism, infographics, logos, form, shape, style etc. What is the function? How might this be executed? Formulate understanding of the versatility of graphic design. Discriminate examples of graphic design in use everywhere. Investigating/making: Cutting out, sticking down, putting together, forming mixed media piece which communicates selected theme. Constructing graphic design using the play on words/play on form technique-directly related to the subject matter/company/business/product etc. Assemble to any scale, modify format to what suits purpose and direct communication.

Materials/Facilities: Newspapers, magazines, glue, paper, pens, pencils, scissors, cutting boards, blades, separate titles and range of mixed media templates and formats. Literacy: Collage, visual communication, infographics, logos, brand, identity. Numeracy: Typographic measurements and grids. Use of digital media: Digital presentation powerpoint. Teaching/Learning Strategy: Whole class working in art room setting, group discussions, individual and/or group work. Differenciation: Outstanding/capable designer can expand and improve concept to greater sophistication and finish.

Timeline: 1st lesson - Intro. A4 collage on theme zeitgeist complete. 2nd lesson - Presentation on open-format functional design. Word association started based on random title chosen. 3rd lesson - Subject chosen, image associations and initial ideas. 4th lesson - Graphic work and finish.

An openness to taking part in the project from the outset. Effort in making collage and planning for graphic design. -Interest shown and evident in how they participated in discussions. Focus and attention evident in work as understanding of subject gained and adapted. - Willingness and enthusiasm in first stage of gathering materials from magazines/papers etc. provided to compile A4 college piece. Application and focus while constructing word/ image associations and brainstorms.

Clear communication of theme and function. Design/layout/and overall finish. - Appropriate medium/area/format for idea. Clarity and accessibility of subject matter and provided imagery/ information as evidence of learning gained. - Clever and clear design to provide instant communication and impact. Use of imagery and media to enhance visual effectiveness and sophistication.
