GOALS OUTCOMES: These should be broadly stated, measurable learner outcomes expected with the completion of the course; use additional sheet(s) if necessary. 1.

Analyze and recognize the internal processes under the Earth's crust. Identify and interpret the external processes above Earths crust. Explore scientific processes and make inferences about their observations. Look at Geology through a global perspective, and examine Earth's processes as a whole system. Explore rocks and minerals and determine how they are produced and describe their placement within Earth. Study the development, location, and importance of fossils as they apply to determining relative time.

2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

OBJECTIVES: These should be specifically stated, measurable learner outcomes to be met throughout the course; use additional sheet(s) if necessary. The student who satisfactorily completes this course will be able to: 1. 2. 3. 4. Identify the major concepts of Geology. Understand the scientific method. Identify common rocks and minerals and their properties. Understand and apply the concepts of fracture, cleavage, color, streak, luster, and specific gravity. Distinguish the three main types of Volcanoes and their general characteristics. Distinguish Extrusive and Intrusive processes. Identify pipes, dikes, sills, and batholiths. Classify rocks by texture. Understand the process of weathering.

5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

10. Classify the various sedimentary rocks and the processes that formed them. 11. Understand igneous rocks and the conditions under which they form. 12. Classify the various metamorphic rocks. 13. Understand the process of metamorphism. 14. Understand the Principles of Geology (uniformitarianism, superposition, inclusion, etc.) 15. Distinguish between absolute age and relative age. 16. List the major periods of Geologic time. Motlow State Community College Lynchburg, TN Page 2 of 5

17. Understand the process of fossil formation and identify the fossils importance to geology. 18. Understand mass wasting, glaciers, groundwater, streams, and Deserts. 19. Differentiate the various features of the earth's interior. 20. Understand the principles involved in earthquakes. 21. Understand the theories of continental drift, sea floor spreading, and plate tectonics.

FINAL GRADING PLAN Based Upon Percentages A = B = C = D = F = Additional Comments: The Geology Lab is a hands-on lab. You will be given assignments in the required lab manual. These will be averaged together as a separate grade at the end of the course, comprising one-half of the final grade for the complete class. It is very important that you attend the labs. Two absences here will result in a grade of F. Attendance will be taken at each class/lab meeting. The grade scale is the same as the one for the class section of this course. NOTE: Some instructors may include a field trip component to this course see individual instructors course outline for more information. 90 to 100 80 to 89 75 to 79 70 to 74 less than 70
