Text: University Physics,13th Edition, by Young and Freedman. Lab manual available online at my website: cconline.occ.cccd.edu/online/sdrum Grading The grading is based on: 4 Tests 100 points each 10 - 12 Labs 100 points total The grading scale is: 425 500 pts 350 424 pts 300 349 pts 250 299 pts A B C D

Tests and Labs There will be a test every four weeks. You may use a dictionary for the test as long as it is paper and not electronic. The labs are a crucial part of the course. You may not hand in the lab unless you have attended. Please be on time: If you are late for lab you lose points. Incompletes, attendance, make-ups and extra credit Incompletes will be given only in unusual circumstances such as a serious illness. If you need an incomplete, you need to contact me as soon as possible and make a contract with a schedule for completing the course. If you miss a test or lab, come see me as soon as possible. An unexcused absence results in a grade of 0. Extra credit assignments are never given.

P280 TR Syllabus Spring 2013 Honesty Any form of academic dishonesty will result in a zero grade for the assignment. The following things are forms of cheating: Faking data on labs, using unauthorized materials on a test, and giving a false reason for an absence. Learning Outcomes: Students will demonstrate the ability to:

1. Describe orally or in written form the underlying principles of electrostatics, magnetostatics, and electromagnetic induction, and their role in everyday life situations. 2. Apply the basic acquired knowledge of electricity and magnetism to predict interactions between charges (Coulombs Law), currents (Amperes Law), and charges and currents (Maxwells Equations), in addition to quantifying these outcomes by means of algebra, and calculus. 3. Use a self-reflective approach to creatively devise and develop projectwork which integrates different fundamental concepts in electromagnetic theory. 4. Employ safe and proper laboratory techniques to make accurate and reproducible measurements of: current, voltage, resistance, inductance, capacitance, and other quantities. 5. Make critical judgments about experimental results, based on knowledge of data analysis. 6. Systematically evaluate their own entire lecture-lab learning experiences and use these assessments as a beacon to succeed in their future academic aspirations. Homework Homework will not be collected or graded, but many of the test questions will be based on homework problems. The homework problems are listed below.
