1. COURSE OBJECTIVE
KOR 401/402 (fourth-year Korean) is designed for students who have successfully
completed KOR 302 or its equivalent. This course is to help them explore various topics of
Korean culture and society and develop all four language skills: speaking, listening, reading,
and writing. A wide variety of authentic and culturally significant reading material will be
provided to help students achieve high levels of proficiency not only in interpersonal but
also in interpretive and presentational communication. Students will study high-level
vocabulary and increase their reading comprehension skills through reading newspaper
articles, journals, and essays. The first half of the class will focus on the introduction of
new vocabulary and grammar. The second half of the class will cover reading, listening,
and discussion of the topic.
2. COURSE CONTENT
A. Course contents and instruction

Attendance & Participation: Attendance at all classes will be recorded and is

mandatory. The university catalog states that "Regular attendance at class and
laboratory sessions is expected for all courses in which a student enrolls.
Unavoidable absences should be explained to the instructor." Since this is a hybrid
online course and students only meet 2~3 times per week throughout the six-week
summer session and absence will affect your letter grade. Multiple tardiness and
early leaves will add up to absence (usually, 3 tardies will equal one absence).
Tardiness or early leaves of more than 20 minutes will be counted as an absence.

In addition to in-class instruction, students are encouraged to attend online sessions

via Skype (Online teacher: Ms. Nayoung Kim; Skype ID: nayoungnayoung2)
during their scheduled appointment time. During an online session, you may ask
questions about the assigned readings or homework.

Assignments: Assignments will be given for each lesson. Assignments are due at
the beginning of each class on the notified date. Late assignments result in a 50%
point deduction. Daily assignments encompass vocabulary exercises, readings,
writing exercises, and reviews of grammar.

Vocabulary Quiz: Students will be given a vocabulary quiz at the beginning of

each lesson. Memorize the list of new words from the vocabulary list given by the
instructor in advance.

Lesson Quizzes: There will be two lesson quizzes during the second week and fifth
week of instruction covering the vocabulary, grammar, and reading that have been
taught to that point.

Final Exams: There will be two final exams at the end of the course (KOR401:
June 7th and KOR402: June 27th) covering the vocabulary, grammar, reading, and
writing learned throughout the course.
