Make the power, External Sync, alarm interface and traffic interface area connections before equiping the sub-rack with cards. 1.2.4 Fitting the Sub-Rack The sub-rack is supplied with its own rack fixing mounting brackets. These are attached on either side of the sub-rack card cage which is based on the EP88MK2 equipment practice, and is screened for EMC according to ETSI requirments. It is possible to fit up to two of these equipments in a standrad rack. The sub-rack should be positioned and alligned with the rack locating pegs on the rack and fixed to it by twelve M6 screws. Ref. For detailed picture consult Add-Drop Multiplex Equipment User Manual 1.2.5 External traffic synchronous connections Synchronous connections to and from the SMA-4 are input output via two 9 way D-typeb connectors on the balance alarm timing LTU and via via type 43 connectors on the unbalanced LTU.

1.3 Card Installation After installation of sub-rack it is now the part to install cards. One should be well informed where which cards should be installed. He should be well informed about the planning also. Because with out the planning sheet it is not possible to know the criterion of the cards. About the location of cards in the sub-rack consult chap.1 page 4 of user manual. Be sure about the position of the cards and dont insert any card in the wrong slot. 1.4 Connecting power Power supply units can be put in slots 417,615&616 depending on the degree of protection needed. In case of power supply units there is no stand by. If one fails the other takes the responsibility. According to the number of PSUs the appropriate power LTUs must be fittedre. The power LTU must be fitted befire cinnecting power to the equipment. The battery supplies must be disconnected before removal of LTU. A fully equiped SMA-4 should use tripple feed LTU. The SMA-4 equipment incorporating a Bw7R rack alarm sceem, requirs a ve and battery and +ve battery power feed . The ve battery feed is via 10 amps circuit breaker respectively. The battery supply is connected to the equipment via a three pin D type power plug arranged in 15 way D type shell. The nominal working voltage are 36V to 75V. The pins in the power connector accept the wire thickness of atleast 1mm insulated manufectured to BS6746. Cables type for connection of the power supplies must be capable of carrying at least 15A continuous. Some more power related notes

1.6 Safty Practices: Before making or breaking an optical connection the power to the optical source is off. Always ensure that the optical source is off. Handle optical fiber carefully as broken fiber can be very sharp Never use a magnifying glass as an aid to viewing any part of an optical system Use only approved methods and materials for cleaning optical connectors. When making optical measurements involving the use of test lead ensure that The connection to the optical source is the last to be made and first to be broken. The optical measurement path is closed before reapplying power to the optical source. Do not apply power to the optical sources when they are not fitted to their slots. Do not connect an optical output to lines unless the distant end is safely terminated. After working do not left any small fiber broken portion on the floor. 1.7 Cleaning of optical coupler Blow dust cleaner for dust removal purpose. Blow coupler dry and clear of dust using the dust cleaner. Repeat the cleaning procedure if necessary. 1.8 Optical measurement To get the optical measurement power meter can be used. For this purpose we use our Photo Dyne power meter. After getting the satisfactory measurement terminate the fiber in the equipment. 1.9 Equipment Configuration 1.9.1 The shelf and cards are configured and brought to operational state by the use of Local Craft Terminal software. Ref. SMA operational manual On the Set Synchronization mode the should be set to Free Run. On the Set Synchronous Select screen the sync. source select as follows: Line west Line West A Line East A None 1 Line east 1 None System 1 None

All other sources should be set to none.

The mux controller in the off line state does not recognize the presence of cards in the shelfs. If a card is being configured with the mux controller in off-line state then a card missing massage will be displayed. 1.9.2 Optical interface test must be carried out . Connect a suitable optical power meter to the transmit optical coupler of the Optical/Mux card under test via single mode test lead. Operate the top switch on the Optical/Mux for 12 seconds to energise the laser for 90 seconds.(The In-Traffic led on the front pannel of the card will flash at 1 Hz when the laser is on for the 90 second period.) The optical launch power level from the card under the test should be with in 0.3 to 3.8dBm On completion, loop the TX and RX optical ports on the optical mux using a suitable optical test lead. 1.9.3 Cross connections Cross connect each port on the installed 2 mbit trib. Cards in such a manner that they are evenly distributed between east and west STM-4 line cards and if any STM-N trib cards. 1.9.4 Alarm setup For alarm set up, the alarms are needed to set for which type of alarm will be shown and which level of severity. Local craft terminal is needed for this purpose. Consult with user manual. Invert all equiped 2mbit/s trib. LOSS OF TRIB INPUT alarms. Invert the LAPD DISCONNECTED alarms on the mux controller. 1.9.5 1.9.5.1 Alarm check See all alarms from Local Craft Terminal. Alalyse the alarms and clear all the alarms which were in the alarm sheet. Put the date in the SMA by the software. 1.9.5.2 2 Mbit/s loss of trib input alarm This test should be carried out on two ports from each of the equiped 2 mbit/s cards. Simulate a 2 Mbit/s loss of trib input alarm on the port under test by setting the appropriate alarm to normal. We will see one led B lit and local craft terminal should display LOSS OF TRIB INPUT alarm for the port on the card under test. Ensure the alarm is extended to the rack top and Bw7R alarm display unit. Operate the alarm cancel switch on the SMA EOSD unit. Remove the simulated 2 Mbit/s LOSS OF TRIB INPUT alarm by inverting the appropriate alarm and ensure all alarms raised clear.

1.9.6 Error rate and receive line fail alarms Check thye alarm conditions on each equiped Optical /MUX card using the following procedure. Single error indication EBAR alarms Line signal fail alarm Loop the I/P and O/P optical ports via a variable optical attenuator. Apply HDB3 2E15-1 PRBS signal at 2048kbit/s to a trib I/P appropriate to the card under test and set the appropriate 2 MBITs LOSS OF TRIB INPUT. Monitor the signal at the O/P of the same tributary. Increase the optical attenuation until an error rate approximately 5 in 10^8 errors are indicated in error detector. Ensure the error led on the card under test light and single errors are recorded by the error detector. Further increase the the optical attenuation until the error detector indicates an error rate of approximately 1 in 10E6. Ensre the error led on the card is parmanently lit, and the local terminal displays an MS SIGNAL DEGRADE alarm indicating an error rate of 1 in 10^6 for the card under test. Increase the attenuation for maximum. The errors led in the card should remain lit and the local terminal displays STM-1 LOSS OF SIGNAL alarm. Ensure the alarm is extended upto the rack top. Check the error free AIS is displayed by the error detector. Reduce the optical attenuation to minimum and let the alarms raised to clear. Remove test equipment connection and invert appropriate 2 mbit/s LOSS OF TRIB INPUT alarm. Remove the optical attenuator and loop the TX-RX optical ports using an optical test lead.

1.9.7 Error Free Check An error free check of SMA-4 should be made with optical ports of the each equiped Optical/Mux looped. Cabling between DDF and SMA-4 should be included in the test setup. Apply an HDB3 2^15^1 PRBS signal at 2048kbits to port 1 I/P of 2 mbits trib card 1 at the DDF. Check the error free PRBS is present at the port O/P.

Sequentially loop the 2 mbits O/P ports to the adjacent I/P ports at the DDF. To ensure no cabling errors are present check for error free PRBS at each port O/P as the ports are looped. Set all equiped 2 mbits LOSS OF TRIB alarms to normal. 1.9.8 Precussion Tests Gently agitate the cables in the ddf and equipment face and gently tap each card in the shelf. No alarms should be recorded and no alarms should occur in either case. 1.9.9 Stability period Monitor the error performance of the 2 Mbit PRBS signal for a period of one hour. A record of a binary errors should be kept using printer of pattern generator. The PRBS 2 mbits signal should be error free. If there is any erropr and any alarm the cause should be investigated.
