The Sad Truth Behind Electricity Usage Ethical Living

amounts of it every single day.
By Yun Jie Wong
Did you know that 44% of electricity is generated through coal, which is also known as the single biggest air polluter in the US yet we are still relying on electricity for everything? Today I will be talking about electricity and how people are STILL taking it for granted. Electricity is one of the most vital resources that humans need for their everyday necessities, but unfortunately it is also a very expensive resource in our modern society. I dont mean expensive as in the price for electricity, but expensive because it costs our environment a lot. Electricity is most commonly generated through burning fossil fuels, which as we know emits horrendous amounts of air pollution like sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide into

Electricity is one of the most crucial resources in our modern-day society, and yet people still waste huge

our environment. Houses are getting bigger and technological gadgets are dominating the markets as well. If people keep taking electricity for granted and not take care of how much electricity theyre consuming, then we may eventually destroy our one and only planet that sustains life. Lastly, not only does air pollution create more global warming, it can also affect peoples health by spreading diseases such as asthma. To conclude, we only have one earth. You dont need to do a lot because even the smallest attempt to conserve electricity, like turning off the lights when youre not using them can make a big difference. Together, we can help save our earth.

10 Quick and Easy Ways to Save Electricity at Home!

1. Unplug your phone charger when youre not using it 2. Replace your incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent ones 3. Use natural light when possible 4. Turn off the lights if youre not using it 5. Use ceiling fans more frequently than air- conditioners 6. Take showers, not baths 7. Dont leave the refrigerator door open 8. Wash only full loads of clothes/dishes 9. Turn off machines when youre not using them (TVs, computers, radios, video games, etc.) 10. Keep doors and windows closed when heat or air conditioning is on

How Many Months will it Take Yun Jies Family to Reach 300 KwH Per Month?
Grade 8 Student at ISKL, Yun Jie Wong, talks about his familys monthly Kwh usage
By: Yun Jie Wong
Yun Jie Wong is your average middle school boy who wants to make a they were still new to KL so they werent very aware of conserving electricity at the time. That was until they got their electricity bill at the end of the month. Shocked by the amount of electricity his family used compared to other families, he decided that his goal was simply to use less and less electricity as each month passes by. Weve done many things to help save energy at home, from using sunlight as our light source in the morning to taking shorter and colder showers. Explains Yun Jie. The possibilities of what you could do to help are endless, its just a matter of whether you do it or not. He also says that hes done things like turning up the AC from 21 to 23, relying on ceiling fans more rather than the ACs, unplugged his laptop charger when it doesnt need to be charged and even washing full loads of clothing at once instead of washing them at separate intervals. Saving electricity is as easy as apple pie, laughs Yun Jie. In fact, the only thing hard about saving electricity is just remembering to! As seen from his graph below, we can conclude that there is a linear decay, or a decreasing linear function meaning that hes gradually using less and less electricity over time. I predict that it will take my family about 10-11 months until we will use about 300 Kwh per month. Concludes Yun Jie. Hes just a regular middle school boy and yet he and his family can accomplish this. However, the real question is: CAN YOU???
To find the equation of the fitted line, I first chose 2 points on the graph. I chose the points (1, 890) and (5, 600). Then, I use the equation for the slope, which is . I substitute the

difference by changing his familys electricity wasting habits. In August,

numbers in (

or

) and I

end up with the answer of

or

. I

have found my slope so now I have to find the vertical intercept. To find the vertical-intercept, I have to substitute one of my x-intercepts in for x and one of my y-intercepts in for y. My equation so far is or now so I substitute 1 for x if I . Last but not least, and 890 for y, which gives me the equation of simplify it. My final equation for the fitted line is to see how long it would take my family to reach 300 Kwh per month, I simply substitute 300 in for y. If you solve the equation, the answer is or approximately 9 months. To conclude, if my family continues at this rate, we will be using only 300 Kwh per month in about 9 months.
