1. A Journal bearing with a diameter of 200 mm and length 150mm carries a load of 20kN when the journal speed is 150rpm. The diametral ratio is 0.0015. If possible the bearing is to operate at 350 ambient temperature without external cooling with a maximum oil temperature of 900 C. If external cooling is required, it is to be little as possible to minimize the required oil ow rate & heat exchanger size. i). What type of oil do your recommend? ii). Will the bearing operate without external cooling? iii). If the bearing operates without external cooling, determine the operating oil temperature. iv). If the bearing operates with external cooling, determine the amount of oil in kg/min required to carry away the excess heat generated over heat dissipated, when the oil temperature rises from 850 C to 900 C, when passing through the bearing. 2. Design a side or overhang crankshaft for a 250mm X 300mm gas engine. The weight of the ywheel is 30 KN, and the explosion pressure is 2.1 N/mm2 . When the crank angle is 350 from IDC the connecting rod is 4.5 times the crank radius. 3. A four stroke internal combustion engine has following specications: Break power=7.5 KW, speed=1000rpm, indicated mean eective pressure=0.35 N/mm2 maximum gas pressure=3.5 N/mm2 , mechanical eciency=80%. Determine (i). the dimensions of the cylinder, if the length of stroke is 1.4 times the bore of the cylinder (ii).Wall thickness of the cylinder, if the hoop stress is 35MPa. (iii). Thickness of the cylinder head & the size of studs when the permissible stress for the cylinder head & stud materials are 45 MPa & 65 MPa respectively. 4. An open belt connects two at pulleys. The pulley diameter are 300mm and 450mm and the corresponding angles of lap are 1600 & 2100 . The smaller pulley rotates 200rpm. The co-ecient of friction between the belt & pulley is 0.25. it is found that the belt is on the point of slipping, when 3 KW is transmitted. To increase the power transmitted two alternatives are suggested, namely i) Increasing the initial tension by 10% and. Ii). Increasing the co-ecient of friction by 10% the application of a suitable dressing to the belt. Which of these two methods would be more eective? Find the percentage increase in power possible in each case. 5. A pair of 200 full-depth involute tooth spur gear is to transmit 30 KW at a speed of 250 rpm of the pinion. The velocity ratio ratio is 1:4. The piniom is made of cast steel having an allowable static stress, 0 =100MPa. While the gear is made of cast iron having allowable static stress, 0 =55MPa. The pinion has 20 teeth and its face width is 12.5 times the module. Determine the module, face width and pitch diameters of both the pinion and gear from the stand point of strength only taking velocity factor into consideration. The tooth form factor is given by the 0.912 3 expression y = 0.154 noof teeth and velocity factor is given by CV = 3+v , where v is the peripheral speed of the gear in m/s 6. A dierential screw jack is to be made as shown in g 17.16. Neither screw rotates. The outside screw diameter is 50mm. The screw threads are of suave form single start and the co-ecient of thread friction is 0.15. Determine 1. Eciency of the screw jack. 2. Load that can be lifted if the shear stress in the body of the screw is limited to 28 MPa.

1. Design a journal bearing for a centrifugal pump running 1440 r.p.m. The diameter of the journal is 100 mm and load on each bearing is 20 KN. The factor ZN/P may be taken as 28 for centrifugal pump bearings. The bearing is running at 750 C temperature and the atmosphere temperature is 300 C. The energy dissipation co-ecient is 87.5W/m2 .0 C. Take diametral clearance as 0.1mm. 2. Design a plain carbon steel centre crankshaft for a single acting four stroke single cylinder engine for the following data. Bore=400mm, stroke=600 mm engine speed=200rpm mean eective pressure=0.5 N/MM2 maximum combustion pressure=2.5 N/MM2 , weight of ywheel used as a pulley=50KN. Total belt pull=6.5KN. When the crank has turned through 350 from the top dead centre the pressure on the piston is 1N/mm2 and the torque on the crank is maximum. The ratio of the connecting rod length to the crank radius is 5. Assume any other data required for the design. 3. Design a piston for a four stroke diesel engine consuming 0.3 kg of fuel per KW of power per hour and produce a brake mean eective pressure of the 0.7N/mm2 . The maximum gas pressure inside the cylinder is 5 N/mm2 at a speed of 3500 r.p.m. The cylinder diameter is required to be 300 mm with stroke 1.5 times the diameter. The piston may have 4 compression rings and on oil ring. The following data can be used for design. Higher caloric valve of fuel=46X103 kJ/kg, temperature at the piston centre=700 K, temperature at the piston edge=475K, heat conducted through for=5% of the heat produced, permissible tensile strength for the material of piston=27 N/mm2 pressure between rings and piston=0.04N/mm2 permissible tensile stress in rings =80N/mm2 ,permissible pressure on piston barrel =0.4N/mm2 , permissible pressure on piston pin=15N/mm2 permissible stress in piston pin=85N/mm2 any other data required for the design may be assumed. 4. A cross belt arrangement has centre distance between pulleys as 1.5m. The diameter of bigger and smaller pulleys are D & d respectively the smaller pulley rotates at 1000 rpm and the bigger pulley at 500 rpm. The at belt is 6mm thick & transmits =7.5KW power at belt speed of 13m/s approximately. The co ecient of belt friction is 0.3 and the density of belt material is 950 KG/m3 . If the permissible tensile stress for the belt material is 1.75MPa. Calculate (i)Diameters of pulley (ii) Length and width of belt. 5. A gear drive is required to transmit a maximum power of 22.5 KW. The velocity ratio is 1:2 and r.p.m of the pinion is 200.The approximate centre distance between the shafts may be taken as 600mm. the teeth has 200 stub involute proles. The static stress for the gear materials (which is cast iron) may be taken as 60 MPa and face width as 10 times the module. Find the module, face width and number of teeth on each gear. Check the design for dynamic and wear loads. The deformation or dynamic factor in the Buckingham equation may be taken as 80 and the material combination factor for the wear as 1.4 6. A sluice valve, used in water pipe lines, consists of a gate raised by the spindle, which is rotated by the hand wheel. The spindle has single start square threads. The nominal diameter of the spindle is 36 mm and the pitch is 6mm. The friction collar has inner and outer diameters of 32mm and 50 mm respectively. The co-ecient of friction at the threads and the collar are 0.12 and 0.18 respectively. The weight of the gate is 7.5KN and the frictional resistance to open the valve due to water pressure is 2.75 KN. Using uniform wear theory determine 1. Torque required to raise the gate 2. Overall eciency. 7. Describe the design methods of slide ways. 8. Write notes on (a). Design of crane hooks (b). Roller bearing types.

1. Design a journal bearing for a centrifugal pump from the following data. Load on the journal=20,000 N; speed of journal=900 r.p.m. Type of oil is SAE 10, for which the absolute viscosity at 550 C=0.017 kg/ms; ambient temperature of oil=15.50 C maximum bearing pressure for the pump=1.5 N/mm2 Calculate also mass of the lubricating oil required for articial cooling if rise of temperature of oil be limited to 100 C. Heat dissipation coecient=1232 w/m2 /C0 . 2. A connecting rod is required to be designed for a high speed four stroke I.C engine. The following data are available diameter of piston=88 mm. Mass of reciprocating parts=1.6kg. Length of connecting rod(centre to centre)=300mm stroke=125 mm. R.P.M=2220(when developing 50KW) possible over speed=3000 rpm; Compression ratio =6.8:1 (approximately); probable maximum explosion pressure (assumed shortly after dead centre say at about30 )=3.5 N/mm2 Draw fully dimensioned drawings of the connecting rod showing the provision for the lubrication. 3. A four stroke diesel engine has the following specication; brake power=5 KW; speed=1200 r.p.m indicated mean eective pressure=0.35 N/mm2 mechanical eciency=80%.Determine; (i) Bore and length of the cylinder (ii) Thickness of the cylinder head and (iii) Size of studs for the cylinder head 4. Design a rubber belt to drive a dynamo generating 20KW at 2250 r.p.m and tted with a pulley 200mm diameter. Assume dynamo eciency to be 85% allowable stress for bolt=2.1 MPa. Density of rubber=1000kg/m3 Angle of contact for dynamo pulley=1650 Coecient of friction between belt and pulley=0.3 5. 6. A machine slide weighing 3000 N is elevated by a double start acme threaded screw at the rate of 840 mm/min. If the coecient of friction be 0.12 calculate the power to drive the slide. The end of the screw is carried on a thrust collar of 32 mm inside diameter and 58mm outside diameter. The pitch of the screw thread is 6mm and outside diameter of the screw is 40mm. If the screw is of steel, is it strong enough to sustain the load? Draw a neat sketch of the system. 7. Discuss the general design procedure for machine tool beds. 8. Write notes on (a) Design of c-clamps (b) Chain drives.

1. Design of suitable journal bearing for a centrifugal pump from the following available data. Load on the bearing =1.5kN, diameter of the journal=80mm speed=1440rpm, bearing characteristic number at the working temperature (750 C)=30, permissible bearing pressure intensity=0.7 N/mm2 to 1.4 N/mm2 , average atmospheric temperature=300 c, calculate the cooling requirements. 2. Design a connecting rod for an I.C engine running at 1800rpm and developing a maximum pressure of 3.15 N/mm2 . The diameter of the piston is 100mm, mass of the reciprocating parts per cylinder 2.25 kg length of connecting rod 380mm, stroke of piston 190mm and compression ratio 6:1. Take a factor of safety of 6 for the design take length to diameter ratio for bearing as 1:3 and small end bearing as 2 and the corresponding bearing pressure as 10N/mm2 and 15 N/mm2 . The density of material of the rod may be taken 8000 kg/m3 and the allowable stress in the bolts as 60N/mm2 and in cap as 80N/mm2 . The rod is to be of I-section for which you can choose your own proportions. Draw a neat dimensioned sketch showing provision for lubrication. Use Rankine formula for which the numerator constant may be taken as 320N/mm2 and the denominator constant 1/7500. 3. Design a cast iron trunk type piston for a single acting four stroke engine developing 75 KW per cylinder when running at 600rpm. The other available data is as follows. Maximum gas pressure=4.8N/mm2 indicated mean eective pressure=0.65 N/mm2 mechanical eciency=95% radius of crank=110mm, fuel consumption=0.3kg/BP/hr, caloric value of fuel (higher ) is 44X103 kJ/Kg, dierence of temperatures at the centre and edges of the piston head=2000 C allowable stress for the material of the piston=33.5 MPa, allowable stress for the material of the piston rings and gudgeon pin=80MPa allowable bearing pressure on the piston barrel=0.4N/mm2 and allowable bearing pressure on the gudgeon pin=17N/mm2 . 4. Design a at belt drive to transport 110KW at a belt speed of 25m/s between two pulleys of diameters 250mm and 400mm having a pulley centre of 1 meter. The allowable belt stress is 8.5 mpa and the belts are available having a thickness to width ratio of 0.1 and a material density of 1100kg/m3. Given that the coecient of friction between the belt and pulleys is 0.3 determine the minimum required belt width. What would be the necessary installation force between the pulley bearings and what will be the force between the pulley bearings when the full power is transmitted? 5. A pair of straight teeth spur gears is to transmit 20 KW when the pinion rotates at 300 r.p.m. The velocity ratio is 1:3. The allowable static stresses for the pinion and gear materials are 120 MPa and 100MPa respectfully. The pinion has 15 teeth and its face width is 14 times the module. Determine (i) Module (ii) Face width and (iii) pitch circle diameters of the both the pinion and the gear from the standpoint of strength only, taken into consideration the eect of the dynamic loading The tooth form 3 0.912 factor y can be taken as y = 0.154 noof teeth and the velocity factor Cv as Cv = 3+v where v is expressed in m/s 6. A cross bar of a planner weighing 12 KN is raised and lowered by means of two square threaded screw of 38mm outside diameter and 7mm pitch. The screw is made of steel and a bronze nut of 38mm thick. A steel collar has 75mm outside diameter and 38mm inside diameter. The co-ecient of friction at the treads is assumed as 0.11 and at the collar 0.13. Find the force required at a radius of 100mm to raise & lower the rod. 7. Discuss the design procedure for lathe bed. 8. Write notes on (a) Design of c-clamps (b) V-belts.
