Political Banishment under Apartheid

Saleem Badat, Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa

4
Forthcoming publ icat ions

The apartheid state employed many weapons against its opponents: imprisonment, banning, detention, assassination and banishment. In a practice reminiscent of Tsarist and Soviet Russia, a large number of enemies of the state were banished to remote areas, far from their homes, communities and followers. Here their existence became a slow torture of the soul,

a kind of social death. This is the first study of an important but hitherto neglected group of opponents of apartheid, set in a global, historical and comparative perspective. It looks at the reasons why people were banished, their lives in banishment and the efforts of a remarkable group of activists, led by Helen Joseph, to assist them.

R e a de rship : Scholars, intellectuals, politicians and individuals who are politically active through political

organisations and civil society bodies. All those interested in aspects of South Africas authoritarian and repressive past and in human rights issues.

This book provides a new introduction to Augustines City of God and his doctrine of the two cities, sources of this doctrine in Manichaeism, (Neo)Platonism and the preAugustinian Jewish and JewishChristian traditions.

The book presents new figurative models of interchange between Judaism and Christianity. It demonstrates the nexus connecting the account of Creation and the Tabernacle using Jewish and Christian texts and artistic images from late antiquity to the late Middle Ages.

Fewster develops the theory of lexical monosemy, in a systemicfunctional linguistic framework, and disputes concensus readings of as nature in Romans 8.

In Verbal Aspect in Synoptic Parallels Wally Cirafesi argues that the Synoptic Gospels at times employ different tenseforms to communicate the same action for the purpose of constructing discourse according to various levels of linguistic prominence.

Ryan Wettlaufer explores how conjectural emendation can be used in New Testament textual criticsm to restore readings which were once found in the original text but now are No Longer Written.

Apokatastasis (restoration) is a major Patristic doctrine stemming from Greek philosophy and Jewish-Christian Scriptures. Ramelli argues for its presence and Christological and Biblical foundation in many Fathers, analysing its meaning and development from the birth of Christianity to Eriugena.

Genesis 11 and Ancient Jewish Interpretation

Biblical Studies

Toward a Postcolonial Reading of the Epistle of James offers an interpretation of Jas 2:1-13 putting the text in the midst of its Roman imperial context.

In Revelation 21-22 in Light of Jewish and Greco-Roman Utopianism, Eric J. Gilchrest offers a creative and compelling reading of Revelation 21-22 as understood through the lenses of ancient Greco-Roman and Jewish utopianism.

Ancient Jewish Interpreters read and rewrote the biblical narrative of the Tower of Babel to address various challenges to the identity of Israel in the Second Temple and early rabbinic periods.

Mental Disorders in the Classical World

Edited by W.V. Harris, Columbia University

The historians, classicists and psychiatrists who have come together to produce Mental Disorders in the Classical World aim to explain how the Greeks and their Roman successors conceptualized, diagnosed and treated mental disorders. The Greeks initiated the secular understanding of mental illness, and have left us a large body of penetrating and thought-provoking writing on the subject, ranging in time from Homer to the sixth

century AD. With the conceptual basis of modern psychiatry once again under intense debate, we need to learn from other rational approaches even when they lack modern scientific underpinnings. Meanwhile this volume adds a rich chapter to the cultural and medical history of antiquity. The contributors include a high proportion of the bestregarded scholars in this field, together with papers by some of its rising stars.

R e ad e rs hip : This book will be important for historians of

medicine and of classical culture, but also for all practising psychiatrists who are willing to cross cultural boundaries and/or think about the intellectual basis of current practices.

In Discovering the Ice Ages Tobias Krger explores the discovery of the Ice Ages over the course of the 19th century, how the idea was received, and what further research it stimulated for the first time from an international perspective.

In The Circulation of Knowledge Between Britain, India and China, twelve scholars examine how knowledge, things and people moved within, and between, the East and the West from the early modern period to the twentieth century.

Failure of American and Soviet Cultural Imperialism In German Universities, 1945-1990 shows how and why both American and Soviet policies of the transformation of German universities eventually failed.

The Austrian Review of International and European Law is an annual publication that provides a scholarly forum for the discussion of issues of international and European law, with emphasis on topics of special interest for Austria.

In this book Roberto Durrieu provides a broad and original analysis of the phenomenon of money laundering, through a thorough examination of the the financing of terrorism. The necessity of excluding the financing of terrorism from the legal definition of money laundering is clearly illustrated through extensive, original and comparative research.

This General Course is concerned, first, with understanding and assessing the aggregate performance of the world constitutive process, in present and projected constructs; second, with providing the intellectual tools that can enable those involved in making decisions to be more effective, whether they are operating in islands or offshore; and, third, with inquiring into ways the international legal system might be improved.

United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982: A Commentary Online
Edited by Myron Nordquist, Satya N. Nandan, Shabtai Rosenne

These Commentaries are based almost entirely on the formal and informal documentation of the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III, 1973-1982), coupled, where necessary, with the personal knowledge of editors, contributors, or reviewers, many of whom were principal negotiators or UN personnel who participated in the Conference. The scope and duration of the Virginia Commentary project is without precedent as an academic undertaking in the field of international law. The project was conceived by its editors to meet the need - particularly essential in the absence of an official legislative history for the Convention for an objective and comprehensive analysis of the articles in the Convention and in the Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the Convention that entered into force in 1996.

The Supplement to the seven-volume series is also included in the online edition. Prepared at the University of Virginias Center for Oceans Law and Policy, it contains additional primary documents and materials related directly to the Convention. In Filling Regulatory Gaps in High Seas Fisheries, author Yoshinobu Takei investigates the regime of high seas fisheries from the perspective of international law and considers whether there are regulatory gaps and, if so, how they should be filled.

Of special interest is a set of chapters by distinguished scholars and jurists providing nuanced analysis of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea as a key actor in the institutional and regime structure. Other expert authors contribute timely analysis of specific ocean uses in the context of implementation of soft and hard law.

In this book No Cornago asserts the need to restore the longinterrupted continuity between the relevance of diplomacy as raison de systme - in a world which is much more than a world of States - and its unique value as a way to mediate the many alienations experienced by individuals and social groups.

The subjunctive is one of the most central categories of the Tocharian verbal system. A thorough analysis of its meaning and formation is the basis for a careful reconstruction of the Proto-Tocharian stage and its derivation from the IndoEuropean proto-language.

Being an in-depth study of the syntax and semantics of infinitives in Early Vedic, this book gives a comprehensive account of the various types of infinitive use attested. Furthermore, heuristics are given for identifying infinitives in ancient languages.

The religious and strategic importance of Western Palestine in the Islamic period is clearly reflected in the hundreds of Arabic inscriptions found, the texts of which cover a variety of topics including construction, dedication, religious endowments, epitaphs, Quranic texts, prayers and invocations, all now assembled in this Corpus Inscriptionum. R e a de rshi p: All those interested in the history of Palestine and the Near East, Islamic epigraphy, medieval studies, comparative religions, history of art and architecture.

The reign of al-Muqtadir (295320/908-32) is a crucial epoch in Abbasid history. Four scholars question the picture of decline attached to this period, exploring the formal and informal power relationships that shaped politics at the court of this caliph.

This book offers an account of the life and thought of al-asan ar-Ra (d. 1188 C.E.), who was among the most influential theologians of Yemeni Zaydism. Dieses Buch untersucht Leben und Denken von al-asan ar-Ra (st. 1188), einem der einflussreichsten Theologen der jemenitischen Zaydiyya.

Philologischer, historischer und liturgischer Kommentar zum 8. Buch der Johannis des Goripp offers an in-depth study of the 8th book of the Johannis plus a monograph-style introduction to all aspects of the poem.

Protagoras of Abdera: The Man, His Measure makes a case for the Sophist Protagoras as a philosopher in his own right, while at the same time giving due weight to the complicated doxographical situation.

Animals at Work considers the ways in which humans make meaning from their interactions with non-humans in a range of organizations. This is done through ethnographic research in a range of workplaces, from farms and slaughter-houses to rescue shelters and veterinary practices.

Proletarian and Gendered Mass Migrations

Social Sciences

A Global Perspective on Continuities and Discontinuities from the 19th to the 21st Centuries
Edited by Dirk Hoerder, Arizona State University, and Amarjit Kaur, University of New England

Proletarian and Gendered Mass Migrations connects the 19th- and 20th-century labor migrations and migration systems in global transcultural perspective. It emphasizes macroregional internal continuities or discontinuities and interactions between and within macroregions. The essays look at migrant workers experiences in constraining frames and the options they seize or constraints they circumvent. It traces the development from 19th-century proletarian

migrations to industries and plantations across the globe to 20th- and 21st-century domestics and caregiver migrations. It integrates male and female migration and shows how women have always been present in mass migrations. Studies on historical development over time are supplemented by case studies on present migrations in Asia and from Asia. A systems approach is combined with human agency perspectives.
