on chips and other easy, unhealthy snacks. It doesnt have to be this way. It is at this early age when teaching your kids to eat nutritious foods and be active will set them up for good health later in life. But how can a parent ensure that their child is active and healthy throughout the summer months? By being active and healthy WITH them. Children want to emulate their parents, so the best way to teach them the proper tools for adulthood is to be a role model while they are still young. Following these tips will help you to keep your kids properly fuelled and energized throughout the summer months as well keeping them happy and healthy until the school year begins again. "Failure is success if we learn from it" ~Malcolm Forbes

Summer is here, which means your darling little ones are out of school and likely spending their vacation at home. This can mean 24/7 access to food and snacks and often times a more sedentary lifestyle. It seems long gone are the days when we, as kids would spend the summer months building forts in the trees, riding bikes all day or just running around outside with our friends only to take a short break to eat a sandwich or grab a drink of juice. These days, kids seem to spend their time watching TV, playing X-box and feasting

a walk or taking them for a walk to the nearest park. Once at the park, let them go wild! It is much better for them to be climbing the monkey bars outside than to have them climbing the walls inside. A minimum 30 minutes of running, jumping and climbing may be all your child needs to help them settle down at night and get a better sleep. If your child is older, then a family bike ride is a great idea. Not only will it keep you all active but it allows you to see new things that will form a great discussion at the end of the day. Providing Sound Nutrition When your kids are more active they require more nutrients to fuel them and keep their energy levels high. What you feed your kids is more important than how

much you feed them. Foods high in unusable calories and processed sugars should be avoided at all costs since they will drain your child of energy and can lead to lowered immunity and sickness. High energy foods are nutrient dense and low in processed sugars. They should contain a good protein source (lean meats, natural nut butters), a carbohydrate source (think whole grains) and a natural form of sugar (whole fruits). Three good meals a day with a couple of snacks in between should be enough to keep your child running all day.

sports drinks that contain large amounts of sugar and artificial colouring. Plain water or fresh squeezed juices are enough to replenish during an average day

Healthy Snacks Healthy meals seem to be easier to prepare than healthy snacks, so be sure to have things made up ahead of time for on-the-go gnoshing. Have a bowl of cut up fruit in the fridge at all times with grapes, strawberries, blueberries and melon pieces. Make homemade popsicles with fresh squeezed juice no sugar added - or by placing a half banana on a stick and freezing it. Organic, naturally sweetened yogurt cups or prepackaged baggies of nuts, granola or healthy cereals are also easy, ready to grab snacks. Make the most out of your summer by spending time together and making sure it is both healthy and fun for you and your little ones.

of outside play. However, if your child plays a sport such as soccer during the hot summer months, giving them Coconut Water or a homemade sports drink is a better option to help replace lost electrolytes and water. Keeping Cool Keeping cool is just as important as keeping hydrated. Eating cooling foods can help to reduce body temperature, making your child feel more comfortable. When the body becomes overheated it causes reduced appetite, irritability, lack of sleep and general lethargy. Eating fresh organic fruits and vegetables, yogurt, sandwiches and cold pasta salads will still provide necessary energy while keeping your childs body temperature regulated and happy.

Keeping Hydrated Spending more time outside means being exposed to the elements and in the case of summer this means higher temperatures. Being active in the heat causes you to lose more water and electrolytes through sweating so keeping hydrated is very important. It isnt necessary to give your kids Gatorade or other

A True Life Experience
He was a little taken aback by my directly addressing his problem but he was totally open. He had never heard of me nor was he familiar with FIT FOR LIFE, but he thought his Mom might have read the book sometime in the last centuryliterally. I shared with him the fact that the living body is always generating a certain amount of toxins which is not a bad thing; it is simply how the body works. It is only a problem if they are not eliminated. These toxins are produced from two sources; first, every day approximately 300-500 billion cells die off, which are toxic and must be eliminated from the by Harvey Diamond I had a most interesting experience a few months back. Years ago when I was first learning all of this information about diet and nutrition and its effect on health, I was so overthe-top with enthusiasm and zeal, I would literally approach shoppers in the grocery storestrangersand berate them for the foods they were buying and bringing home to their families. On more than one occasion I was unceremoniously ushered from the store and discouraged from returning. Those days are long gone nowrarely, if ever, do I give unsolicited adviceon anything! But a few months ago I saw a group of teenagers in the grocery store buying what I would refer to as, junk food. Ordinarily I would just reflect on what a shame it was and move on to the fruit and vegetable section. But one of these kids caught my eye and I just couldnt walk by without saying something to him. You see, he was clearly an athletic person in really good shape. He was classically good looking, tall, blond hair, blue eyes, but obviously dealing with what was undoubtedly the bane of his existence: his face was completely covered with a mass of pus-filled blemishes. It was impossible to look at him and not be somewhat repulsed and you could tell by his demeanor and body language that he knew it all too well. I singled him out and asked him if I could please talk to him for just a moment. I got right to it; I told him who I was and asked him if he would be interested in learning something that could possibly clear up his face. must be eliminated because if more is generated than is eliminated, that spells trouble in the form of pain, illhealth, and ultimately disease. I further explained to him that one of the means by which the body rids the system of toxins when they are in excess of what the normal channels can handle is to expel more of them out directly through the skin than usual.

Every day approximately 300-500 billion cells die off, which are toxic and must be eliminated from the body
This is what was going on with this young man. Bear in mind that not only is the skin the largest organ of the body but it is also an eliminative organ along with the bowels, bladder, and lungs. As part of the normal, daily process of removing toxins from the body, the skins millions of pores are regularly utilized. All manner of skin conditions in addition to pimples, including hives, eczema, a type of Lupus, inflammation, psoriasis, Rosacea, impetigo, staph, shingles, KP (also known as chicken skin), open sores, and rashes, and all the itching, flaking, and irritation that accompany these conditions are far more often than not the result of an overload of toxins that are being pushed out through the skin. This can happen anywhere on the body; hands, arms, legs, back, face, etc. Continued On Page 8

Tetris to Treat Lazy Eye Disorder?

New research led by Dr. Robert Hess from McGill University and the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre has discovered that the video game Tetris can be used as an approach to treat adult amblyopia, also known as lazy eye. The research published in Current Biology explains that by distributing information between the two eyes, the video game trains both eyes to work together instead of the previous patching treatment for the condition. The researchers tested a sample of 18 adults with amblyopia. Nine participants played the game monocularly with the weaker eye, while the stronger eye was patched. The other nine played the game dichoptically, where each eye was allowed to view a separate part of the game. After two weeks of playing the game, the dichoptic group showed dramatic improvement in the weaker eye and in 3-D depth perception. The monocular group had showed only a moderate improvement. This treatment will be tested in children later this year in a clinical trial across North America. Source: Current Biology, April 2013

There is no strong evidence for pharmacologic treatments such as ginkgo, dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), vitamins, and other substances. Most studies on efficacy show no effect, whereas estrogen therapy showed an increase in cognitive decline and dementia. Evidence for the benefits of physical exercise is also weak. Mental exercise, however, showed benefits in the three clinical trials included in the review. This involved computerized training programs or intensive one-on-one personal cognitive training in memory, reasoning or speed of processing. In one trial, participants had significantly improved memory during 5-year follow-up periods. Another study showed an improvement in auditory memory and attention in a group of seniors who participated in a computerized cognitive training program. "This review provides some evidence to help clinicians and their patients address what strategies might prevent cognitive decline," Dr. Raza Naqvi, Division of Geriatric Medicine, University of Toronto, was quoted as saying. "Future studies should address the impact of cognitive training on the prevention of cognitive decline, and we encourage researchers to consider easily accessible tools such as crossword puzzles and sudoku that have not been rigorously studied. The studies in this review that assessed cognitive exercises used exercises that were both labor and resource-intensive, and thus may not be applicable to most patients." Improving Seniors' Cognitive Functions

Mild cognitive impairment affects 10%-25% of people over age 70. The annual rate of decline to dementia is about 10%. Cognitive training exercises, or mental exercise, may help prevent cognitive decline in healthy older adults, while evidence for the benefits of pharmacologic substances and exercise is weak. Researchers reviewed 32 randomized controlled trials to provide the latest evidence for physicians and their patients to help manage cognitive decline.

Alternative Therapies for High Blood Pressure
A scientific statement from the American Heart Association says alternative approaches to lowering blood pressure, such as isometric hand grip exercises and resistance or strength training, are effective at reducing high blood pressure. The alternative therapies also have few health risks and side effects. A panel of experts reached this conclusion using data from 1,000 studies on three types of alternative therapies: behavioral therapies, noninvasive procedures and devices, and three types of exercise. Some of the data examined included the effects of yoga, acupuncture, and meditation on blood pressure. While all three types of alternative therapies reduced blood pressure, certain ones were more effective than others. Isometric hand grip exercises were able to lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure by 10% after four weeks of doing the exercises, but walking programs and device-guided slow breathing resulted in smaller drops in blood pressure. restaurants display calorie information on their menus to encourage consumers to make healthier food choices, but most studies show it does not lead to fewer calories ordered or consumed. This is the first study to look at the effects of displaying minutes of brisk walking needed to burn food calories on the calories ordered and consumed, Dr. Meena Shah, the senior researcher, was quoted as saying. The study involved 300 men and women ages 18 to 30. They randomly assigned a menu without calorie labels, a menu with calorie labels, or a menu with labels for the minutes of brisk walking needed to burn the food calories. The study was eye-opening for many of the subjects. Source: Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, April 2013

UVA Rays Cause Skin to Age Faster

New research from the Boston University School of Medicine found that longwave ultraviolet light (UVA) induces a protein called progerin which leads to premature skin aging. Progerin plays a role in normal and abnormal aging, but this is the first time an increase in progerin expression has been linked to UVA rays. For the study, researchers exposed skin cell cultures to UVA and UVB rays. Although both kinds of ultraviolet lights induced progerin, UVA rays had a particularly strong effect. So researchers concluded exposure to UVA rays through something like a tanning bed could contribute to accelerated skin aging. Source: Journal of Investigative Dermatology, April 2013

HEALTHY SKIN Continued from Page 4 I let him know that it has been my experience over the last 40 plus years that when people closely follow the principles of eating delineated in my books, skin conditions such as these clear up. Not to make light in any way of such conditions of the skin, but they will clear up when proper steps are taken to allow and support the bodys ongoing effort to efficiently and effectively remove toxins. chips, crackers, in fact anything made from grains of any kind. I explained to him that everything he eats has to ultimately be liquefied so the nutrients that are in the food can be successfully passed through the intestinal wall into the bloodstream for delivery to the cells. The problem is that starch IS NOT WATER SOLUBLE! It cant be dissolved and liquefied so it remains a solid and therefore cannot be utilized by the body. The undissolved starch molecules remain in the body and gum up the works as it were, causing, amongst other things, zits! I pointed out that certain bacteria thrive more on starchy matter than on almost any other matter. As a result, they help us out by breaking down built-up starch molecules into pus, which is then pushed out through the skinpimples! And every time he looked in the mirror he was getting a firsthand view of this phenomenon in action. I suggested to him that if he wanted to get a handle on what was going on with his face so he could talk to girls without feeling self conscious, he needed to seriously consider eating fewer starches (and sodas while he was at it) and eat a little more fruit and salad. I made it clear to him that if he were to stop eating starches altogether, at least until his skin returned to normal, that he would enjoy what he was only dreaming about when he went to sleep at night. He could certainly re-introduce starches back into his diet once his skin cleared up, but for now, it would be wise to stop it all and give his body a chance to make things right for him. That was ithe thanked me, said he would think about what I told him, and we parted company. That was about 5 months ago. A few weeks ago, in the parking lot of the very grocery store where this encounter took place, I heard someone behind me calling out, Hey, Mr. Diamond! I almost didnt recognize himhis face had been transformed! Not only did he take to heart what I had shared with him, but on the outside chance I actually knew what I was talking about, and he might be able to normalize his complexion, he had not had a single bite of anything starchy, nor had he consumed a single

The body is well aware of the situation, and will address it given the opportunity
The important thing is to know that the body and all of its activities unfold with a precision and intelligence that is incomprehensible to us; is well aware of the situation, and will address it given the opportunity. After pointing out to him that I knew, much to his obvious surprise, that he loved eating starchy foods like bread, pasta, pizza, cookies, cakes, and other pastries, cereals,

soda! And his face cleared up! I cannot describe to you the gratitude that exuded from this young man who, as far as he was concerned, got his life back. He looked at me with such love and gratitude that I dont think I will ever forget itor him.

All you need to do is give skin a chance to do what it does best

He would have painted my house for free if I asked him to. I have to admit, I felt nearly as good about it as he. And, to be sure, I was really glad that something told me to take a chance and talk to him in the first place. Over the years I have had a significant amount of experience with people

dealing with skin conditions. The success rate they have had in clearing up even devastating skin problems has been most impressive. If anyone reading this right now is desirous of clearing up any skin conditions they are dealing with or merely want to have healthier, more vibrant looking skin, I suggest you run a little experiment on yourself. Give up all starches for a while and just see what happens. You can always go back to eating them judiciously once you have achieved your goal. You dont need expensive creams or specially marketed products; all you need to do is give the most effective and efficient skin rejuvenator in existence a chance to do what it does best better than any product. And of course I am referring to your own amazing, self repairing, self healing, and self maintaining living body.

Walk a Mile in These Shoes

Dear Pharmacist,
After years of hiking without many problems, I began experiencing pain near my ankle and heel. My doctor diagnosed Achilles tendonitis and prescribed medicine which did reduce pain and swelling. Im still worried Ill not be able to hike again. What natural remedies keep this at bay? --J.S. Boulder, CO Answer: Ouch, Ive had tendonitis myself from over-typing and exercising so I hear ya. This condition is usually an overuse injury and causes pain or swelling in the wrists, knee caps, elbows or Achilles tendons. Actually it can occur in any tendon and there are hundreds! Unfortunately, tendons dont have a rich blood supply and that hinders adequate delivery of oxygen and nutrients. Simply put, tendons are slow to heal. The most important thing you can do to improve tendonitis pain is to rest the area, thats hard to do when its your foot! But tendons dont recover if you keep overusing them. The next consideration (and this one is also free) is to ice the area to reduce inflammation but icing doesnt help much after the first few days. Supplements or medications do help. Most of you will opt for medications like ibuprofen or naproxen (these are NSAIDs and are contraindicated in people with bleeding ulcers among other conditions). My personal favorite anti-inflammatory supplements include astaxanthin, saffron, and curcumin because they have other tremendous health benefits. Here are some more options that can help: 10 Boswellia: A strong anti-inflammatory compound that works as effectively as NSAIDs. Sometimes called Indian Frankincense this herb can be combined with any of the three supplements I mentioned above. MSM-Methylsulfonylmethane: MSM supports healthy connective tissues like tendons and ligaments. Its used for arthritis too. This one is a must for prevention. White Willow (salix alba): This is also know to increase fertility; willow bark may ease aches and pains. Aspirin comes from white willow, and you can trust the herb to reduce pain and inflammation, however it is a mild blood thinner. Ginger: Great for inflammation and pain, especially around the joints. You can buy fresh root at any grocery store and grate into your meals, or make tea. Ginger increases blood circulation (be careful with other blood thinners). Ruta (ruta graveolens): This homeopathic remedy is used for tendon pain, especially in the Achilles, feet, hips, wrists, and areas near other joints. Boiron makes this in pellet form. Arnica (arnica montana): Also a homeopathic, arnica has been used for centuries to treat general pain. It can be taken orally or applied topically. The topical cream Traumeel by Heel contains arnica and several other healing compounds targeted specifically to reduce pain and inflammation from strains and sprains. Im never without Traumeel! Tendonitis can sometimes be the result of arthritis, gout, Reiter syndrome or Ankylosing spondylitis, Lyme disease or other conditions. Its harder to treat or may recur frequently so see your doctor for a correct diagnosis and to ask if these supplements are right for you.

No-Cheese Sauce

This low-fat sauce makes great Mac and Cheese or Baked Ziti. Best of all, it only takes about 5 minutes to put together. It may seem as though this recipe will not work in a blender, but with a little patience it does. If your onions are strong, blanch them in boiling water for a few minutes, or saut them over medium heat for about 5 minutes before adding them to the blender. Ingredients: 1 large yellow onion, peeled and coarsely chopped 1 large red bell pepper, seeded and coarsely chopped 3 tablespoons cashews, toasted, optional 1 cup nutritional yeast 1 tablespoon tahini, optional Salt to taste

Directions: Combine all ingredients in a blender in the order given and puree until smooth and creamy, adding up to cup of water if necessary to achieve a smooth consistency. Variations Use an equal amount of roasted red bell peppers in place of the raw pepper. Combine the prepared sauce with a jar of store-bought salsa or a recipe of Fresh Tomato Salsa, and use as a dip for vegetables. Add teaspoon of nutmeg with the salt.
