pumpkin pointers
When selecting a pumpkin to carve, choose one which is light-colored. It will be softer and
easier to cut. Apply a light coating of petroleum jelly to the sliced areas of the flesh. It will
prevent Edges from drying out and make the pumpkin last longer. If the jack-o-lantern be-
gins to shrivel, revive it by soaking in a bucket of water overnight.

If you travel, be aware the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents now have authority to
search laptops, flash drives, and other electronic equipment without any suspicion of illegal
activity. This new policy, announced in July, applies equally to foreigners and Americans.
Agents can detain any of the devices for as long as they deem necessary, but permanent
seizure requires probable cause of illegal activity.
