The Plan
Deeban Fernandez, a student from ISKL plans to conserve water to help him reduce his water usage . Pg 2
The Results
The results of Deeban s and his familys effort have paid off. Below are plans created to help him reduce his water usage. Pg 2
Table
An environment can be defined as the circumstances or conditions by which one is surrounded. However many humans do not take care their environment especially in developed countries. People take advantage of what nature offers them but they don't care to protect it much. The condition of our environment is deteriorating. People produce a lot of pollution and wastes that destroy our natural environment through human activities. Many of us realize that we shouldn't disregard these problems. Here is an example how development and urbanization count against the natural environment. Firstly, carbon dioxide and other waste gases that are given off in large quantities by factories and power stations as well as motor vehicles contribute to the destruction of our planet. A table shows the amount of water in cubic meters used in Deebans house. Pg 3
Last but not least, Deeban plans to use his mathematical skills to predict how many months it will take him to reduce his water usage to 10 cubic meters per month. Pg 4-
Prediction
Many poor countries suffer from lack of access to clean water and sanitation. Yet, people in wealthy countries waste water by taking long showers and letting the water run while brushing the teeth. We should realize that we do not own Earth and therefore must act sustainably to ensure protect the Earth and the survival of the human race.

Today, Deeban disclosed to us that his goal is to reach 10 cubic meters of water used. One of our news reporters asked Deeban how long it will take him to attain that goal. And this is what Deeban said:
I will have to use a bit of my mathematic skills to make an accurate prediction. Firstly, we need to make an equation. We can do so by calculating the slope of the line of best fit as shown in the graph. To nd the equation of this line of best t, I have to find two points on the graph which is on the line of best fit. I chose (0,32) and (8,20). Now I can figure out the slope by using the formula: Slope = Change in Y / Change in X
I can then substitute the formula with my results: Slope = 32- 20/ 0-8 Slope = 12/-8 Slope = -1.5 The slope of my tted line was-1.5. Since this value is negative, this means that my water usage is decreasing. The general equation of a linear line is y=mx+b. In this case, the slope ( m ) is - 1.5 and the y intercept ( b ) at x= is 32. This means that the equation of my line is y= - 1.5x+32, where x is the number of months from August and y is the cubic meters.

Now I can use my equation y= -1.5x+32 to predict how many months it will take me to reach 10 cubic meters of water usage. So now I substitute 10 cubic meters into the equation as y and solve for x, y= -1.5x + 32 10 = -1.5x + 32 10 - 32 = -1.5x + 32 32 -22 = -1.5x -22/-1.5 = -1.5x/-1.5 14.6 =x
This means it will take be about 15 months to reach 10 cubic meters if I keep up with the same rate shown in the graph. That was a lot of math shown by Deeban. Now we asked Deeban another question which was, What has he learned from this? Deeban simply replied Small steps can make a huge dierence. This action has helped my family and I reduce our water usage. However I would like to thank especially thank my mom for helping me to save water. She would often remind me to have short showers and to turn off the tap when I wasnt using it. So, look around your own house and create your own environmental action plan with your family and see the dierence in your water usage and your bill prices! Now this concludes Deebans plans about saving water, so I guess now its our familys turn!
