Monday, May 20, 2013 Dear Parents, On behalf of Ms.

Schaub and myself, we are delighted to inform you that your child has been selected to represent their class in this years Spelling Bee as a Spelling Contestant / Alternate. My name is Ms. Moon Jang and I am a fifth grade teacher at AISB. In my previous school in the United States, I have had the joy of coordinating and preparing spellers for seven prior spelling bees. Ms. Schaub has invited me join in the special privilege of working with your child as he/she prepares for the AISBee. Though Spelling Bees may be considered an American tradition, they serve as an opportunity for children to work toward goals and offer the thrill of competing in a setting unique to this format. I have learned what it means to have courage and what it looks like to be brave as one walks across a stage. Children have taught me a lesson equal to any that could be learned in a classroom. I congratulate each speller and alternate and welcome you on this journey! I am excited to begin this special work! Please take a moment to review the materials attached and contact me if you have any questions. Please return the permission form below. This acknowledges your childs responsibilities for attending scheduled practice meetings and rehearsals. Thank you for your support,

Ms. Moon Jang Fifth Grade Teacher

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Questions? What if my child cannot attend a mandatory practice or rehearsal? Answer
Mandatory practices and rehearsals will involve specific instruction with rules or th format for the June 13 Spelling Bee event. Though some pieces of information can be shared, to best prepare your child, it is important that they are comfortable with other spellers, staging, and spelling rules. The more automatic these processes are, the more likely they can focus solely on the words and less on the stress of the event. The Mandatory meetings scheduled for June 10-13 are imperative. We will be rehearsing staging and processes for the Spelling Bee Event.

Does my child have to attend all practices on the schedule?

No. Yes to mandatory practices and rehearsals. These practice sessions are here for your child to be among other spellers, become familiar with the spelling format, and learn ways to study words. Please attend as many as you can, they are here to help those who would like the extra time and practice.
This year all alternates will have a chance to win a spot in the June 13 Spelling Bee. One alternate per grade level will be given Contestant status! Alternates will st compete on May 31 between 11:30-12:25 in the Theatre. If one alternate per grade rd level is not selected by 12:25 on this day, then we will continue on Monday, June 3 . If your child is already the class representative, then they may be a part of the audience as they cheer on their fellow spellers!

Do alternates have to attend the June 7th event?

Alternates are expected to attend the June 13th Spelling Bee event. All alternates should be prepared should there be a need to replace the representative. This is also an excellent opportunity for your child to have experience, as it will prepare them for the next year! If you have a family conflict, please just share this with us. Thank you! Practice in the official format, following event rules Afternoon sessions will include a chance to view select Championship Spelling Bee footage and to share stress, anxiety, and relieve worries.
