Work Safety f y

All people working on site should be aware of the Plant Safety Procedures and Precautions. Work operating p g equipment q p without a thorough g understanding of the equipment is not recommended. Consult B&WBC supplied Operating Manuals for proper Operating Instructions, Procedures, Safety Precautions and Warnings!!

W kS Work Safety f t

The Boiler Operator must recognize and accept the Responsibilities not only for the successful Operation of the Boiler and its related equipment but also for the safety of all Work involved.

Work Safety f y

All Operating Companies develop their own unique set of Operating Instructions for Equipment Protection and Work Safety. y The Precautions discussed in this section are intended for informative purposes and are based on actual operating experiences and point out some problems involved in Work Safety.

Work Safety OBSERVATION DOORS

Always use a full face mask with tinted glass to protect the eyes and face f from hot h gases, h harmful f l li light h rays, slag, l and d ash h particles i l when h viewing i i flames or furnace conditions. Always use long length, heavy, heat resistant gloves to protect hands. Do not stand directly in front of open ports or doors especially when they are being opened. Furnace pulsations caused by firing conditions, sootblower operation, or tube failure can blow hot furnace gases out open doors, even on balanced units.

Work Safety CONFINED SPACES

Never enter a vessel until all steam and water valves, including drain and bl d blowdown valves, l have h b been l locked k d or t tagged d closed. l d It i is possible ibl f for steam and hot water to back up through drain and blowdown piping, especially when more than one boiler drains into the same drain or blowdown tank. When vent valves are connected to a nitrogen system, these valves must also be locked or tagged closed. Do not enter a confined space until it has been cooled, verified that is has been completely purged of combustible and dangerous gases, properly ventilated, and precautions are taken to keep the entrance open. Station a person at the entrance, notify a responsible person, or run an extension cord through the entrance.

Work Safety CONFINED SPACES

Use low voltage extension cord or cords with properly connected g grounds. Bulbs on extension cords and flashlights are to be explosion proof. Never use toxic fluids in confined spaces. The boiler should be cleaned of slag g deposits p before entering the boiler setting or ash pit.

Work Safety SLAG LEAKS

Iron oxides in coal can be reduced to molten iron or iron sulfides in a reducing atmosphere in the furnace because of operating with insufficient combustion air. This molten iron will wash away refractory, seals, and tubes. Thorough inspections for signs of d damage d due to slag l wash h must b be d done each h outage and d necessary repairs made. During operation, any sign of slag washing through the boiler setting is cause for immediate action, including evaluation of area of slag leak and shutdown for repair.

10

Work Safety Access Doors

Access Doors are meant to be used for out-of-service entry into the Boiler. The doors should never be opened when the boiler is in operation, even on a balanced draft unit.

11

Work Safety Fl Ash Fly A h Deposits D it

Never step into Fly Ash!! It can be cold on the surface yet remain hot and smoldering underneath. underneath Never direct water or air into an accumulation of Fly Ash in a Confined Area. The agitation could result in an explosion explosion.

12

Work Safety R t ti Equipment Rotating E i t

Never open p or enter rotating g equipment q p until it has come to a complete stop and its Circuit Breaker is locked open. Some types of equipment can be set into motion with very little force. This type must be locked with a Brake or Locking Device to prevent motion.

13

Work Safety Drive Mechanisms

Always secure (positively prevent operation) the Drive Mechanism of dampers, gates and doors before passing through them.

14

Work Safety Manhole & Handhole Covers

Always be sure pressure has been relieved and equipment cooled before opening Manhole or H dh l Covers. Handhole C Escaping steam or hot water can cause severe burns.

15

Work Safety Gas Leaks

Leaking gas from the Boiler Setting and Flues contain toxic gases. Work are to be prevented from entering or working in an area where a gas leak is present, unless proper precautions (such as gas testing, use of air movers, movers use of respirators, respirators etc etc.) ) are taken.

16

Work Safety Hand Hold Probes

When handling any type of rod or probe in the Furnace be prepared for falling slag striking the rod or probe. The fulcrum action developed can inflict severe injuries. Never use a hollow, open ended probe or rod, as hot g gasses can escape p through g the open p ended probe, resulting in burns.

17

Work Safety Furnace Explosions

Furnace Explosions are a hazard to both operating Work and the equipment involved. To minimize the risk of explosions, especially during pressure raising and load operation, operation always maintain Boiler Air Flow at or above the purge rate during unit operations. For additional information see Boiler Operating Instructions.

18

Work Safety S f t Valves Safety Vl

All Safety Valves must be in proper working condition. Operation with one or more safety valves gagged to prevent leakage is not permitted, unless the unit has excess or redundant d d t safety f t valves, l such h that th t the th gagged safety valve will not affect the Boiler having 100% relieving capacity.

19

Work Safety S f t Valves Safety Vl

Work who are working around or near Safety Valves must be warned about the potential for Safety Valves lifting while the boiler is in service The unexpected and sudden loud noise from a lifting Safety Valve can startle and possibly cause an accident. Always wear hearing protection when working around or setting safety valves.

20

Work Safety P t ti Equipment Protective E i t

Always wear the proper protection equipment (safety glasses glasses, ear protection protection, hard hat, hat safety shoes, gloves, welding shield, etc.) when working on or inspecting the boiler and boiler components.
