GROW A GREEN GENE We consume natural resources, twenty-five percent quicker than natures ability to generate them.

Scientists believe that if we continue at the rate we are going, well probably need two planets by 2050! The choices we make as consumers today impacts the way people live tomorrow. We need to develop a sustainable lifestyle a lifestyle that ensures that we consume goods and services without harming the environment or society. More than anything, it requires a shift in our attitude and day-to-day behaviour. Here are small steps that we could take within our work-spaces and within our schools and colleges. Small steps that make us grow a green gene! Have a bucket bath. An average five minute shower uses 75 liters of water. A bucket bath uses 15 litres of water. Think of how far your food has travelled to reach you, dont pile to o many food miles on your plate. You might also want to think of all the packaging your fast food comes wrapped in and all the accessories- the ketchup sachet, paper napkins, plastic cutlery, straws etc. Having a party? Dont get excess food made. If you do, help distribute the leftover food to those who need it. Try not using disposables. They will only add to the trash in landfills. Whenever you can, buy in bulk, if you insist on buying small packs make sure to choose products with 100% recyclable packaging. Save paper by printing on both sides, by increasing your margins and decreasing your font size so that printing takes less paper. A hose-pipe is a quick and easy way to water plants or wash the car or your front porch but it uses massive amounts of water. Use a watering can or a bucket instead. Are you a gadget junkie? Next time take care to recycle your old electronics. Many companies have exchange schemes that reuse the metal used in older electronic appliances. Next time you buy an appliance for the house make sure that it has maximum number of energy stars. And remember to switch off, not Standby or else it will still guzzle electricity. Replace traditional incandescent bulbs with CFLs or LEDs. Cool people carpool!! There will be less traffic and no road rage!

Today, we need to secure the future for coming generations. Our choices should conserve and protect the natural resource base for all forms of life. We need to develop a social conscience, a sense of right and wrong about what we consume. From a global perspective our effort may seem miniscule. This seemingly miniscule effort may become incredibly huge.
