How Bicycling Can Save the Economy
Elly Blue
“Elly Blue presents a compelling case for the bicycle. . . . This small
book is an inspiration to step away from the automobile and to bicycle
forward into a quieter, brighter, better world.” —Kent Peterson,
Kent’s Bike Blog
• Advertising in Broken Pencil magazine, Maximum Rocknroll magazine,
Momentum magazine, and Razorcake zine (February)
• Author tour to include Baltimore; Boston; Athens and Atlanta, Georgia;
Portland, Maine; Miami; New York; Greensboro and Raleigh-Durham,
North Carolina; Philadelphia; Charleston and Greenville, South Carolina;
Richmond, Virginia; and Washington, DC
Making the case for adopting more sustainable modes of transportation,
this reference explores the economic benefits of bicycling. It starts with
an analysis of the real costs incurred by individuals and families in exist-
ing transportation systems and goes on to examine the current civic
expenses of these systems. With critiques of modern society’s deep-rooted
attachment to car culture, this book tells the stories of people, businesses,
organizations, and cities who are investing in two-wheeled transporta-
tion. Offering a fresh and compelling perspective on how people get from
place to place, this book reveals the multifaceted North American bicycle
movement with its contradictions, challenges, successes, and visions for
the future.
Elly Blue is the author of Everyday Bicycling and her work has
appeared on Bicycling.com and in BikePortland, Bitch Magazine, Grist
Magazine, Momentum magazine, and Reclaim Magazine. She has been
featured on Democracy Now!, Oregon Public Broadcasting, and in the
Oregonian, and she blogs about bicycling and empowerment at
www.TakingTheLane.com. She lives in Portland, Oregon.

research studies available about cycling, and this stopped
me short. I had always, I realized, subconsciously seen
my activism and passion for two-wheeled transportation
as a fringe cause, as a way to learn skills that I could
later apply to real issues once I’d grown up a bit more.
What I found instead was validation beyond what I’d ever imagined.
Environmental destruction? Bikes can help stem the tide.
Health crisis? Bikes all the way.
Distracted driving and the epidemic level of traffic deaths and injuries? Absolutely, bikes.
Mental health crisis, depression, misery in general? Bikes.
Social isolation and community disintegration? Bikes.
Food crisis? Bikes can even help with that.
Energy crisis? Bikes take it head-on, not just in replacing motorized trips, but in creating
the conditions for more energy efficient places.
Economic crisis? Now this is the place where bicycling takes home the biggest trophies.

How Soda Shook Up the World
Tristan Donovan
• Co-op available
This social, cultural, and culinary history charts soda’s remarkable,
world-changing journey from awe-inspiring natural mystery to ubiq-
uity. Off-the-wall and offbeat stories abound, including how quack
medicine peddlers spawned some of the world’s biggest brands, how
fizzy pop cashed in on Prohibition, how soda helped presidents reach
the White House, and even how Pepsi influenced Apple’s marketing
of the iPod. This history of carbonated drinks follows a seemingly
simple everyday refreshment as it zinged and pinged over society’s
taste buds and, in doing so, changed the world.

Like many, [Joseph] Priestley believed that mineral waters could
heal numerous ailments and doubtless thought that perfecting a
method for producing it artificially would greatly benefit the
health of all humanity. As it happened, Priestley’s home in the
English city of Leeds was next to a large brewery and the smell
of the fermenting grain in its vats attracted his attention. In the
summer of 1767, . . . he began a series of experiments with the
aim of capturing the gas emerging from the vats within plain
water. Eventually he succeeding by pouring water back and
forth in containers held above the vats of fermenting beer until
it became carbonated. The fizzy drink had been born.

Excerpt:
For years, whenever I have spoken to American Catholic audiences, I have faced
questions from the audience about the best hope for the future of the Catholic
Church in the United States. I invariably reply that we have been trained to look in
the wrong places for signs of spiritual renewal; we often don’t notice the rays of
hope because they are shining from unexpected directions. To illustrate my point,
my favorite example is the Eternal World Television Network (EWTN). Who
could possibly have anticipated that the world’s largest Christian broadcasting
empire would be founded by an impulsive nun with a long history of medical
problems and no credentials whatsoever in the field of broadcasting? The
American Catholic bishops took a much more “professional” approach, develop-
ing a proper business plan and investing many millions of dollars in their television
plans. Yet today the bishops have absolutely nothing to show for their investment,
while Mother Angelica produced the most startling evangelizing success of our
time. This is a story worth hearing, and reflecting upon, frequently.
This book, I hope, will provide readers with both the inspiration and the encour-
agement that will help them launch their own evangelizing efforts. Inspiration,
because among the many different initiatives portrayed in the following chapters,
there may be some that will spark the reader’s imagination. Encouragement,
because many of the projects described in this book had very humble origins. If
they could do it, you can do it!

Keith Richards
on Keith Richards
Interviews and Encounters
Edited by Sean Egan
• Co-op available
• Advertising in Blurt
• Part of the Musicians in Their Own Words series
The iconic life and career of the famed guitarist of the Rolling
Stones is detailed in this compilation of interviews that spans the last
50 years. Featuring articles from GQ, Melody Maker, and Rolling
Stone, as well as interviews that have never previously appeared in
print, it charts Keith Richards’s journey from gauche, young pre-
tender and swaggering epitome of the zeitgeist to beloved elder
statesman of rock. Initially overshadowed by band mates Mick
Jagger and Brian Jones, Richards gained popularity as half of the
second-most important songwriting team of the 1960s, and in 1967
the drug bust at his house and his subsequent trial and imprison-
ment made him a household name. His interviews match his outlaw
image: free of banality and euphemism, they revel in frank stories of
drugs and debauchery. Yet they also reveal an unexpectedly warm,
unpretentious, articulate, and honest man. This collection amply
illustrates the magic and charm of Keith Richards.

So the Grim Reaper is sitting at home watching TV when the
doorbell rings. He opens up and Keith Richards is standing there
in hooded black sackcloth, a sharp-looking scythe at his side.
“Sorry,” says the Rolling Stones’ seemingly indestructible gui-
tarist. “Your number’s up.” Presented with the above vignette,
Richards gets the joke. “Yeah, I’d like to see the Reaper off,” he
says with a gruff laugh, “but people shouldn’t try and do what
I’ve done with my body, because not everybody can.”

popular image format allows the photos to be viewed
and manipulated in any way an artist might find useful,
such as combining images or rotating them. Images can
be viewed on a computer screen, printed out, projected
for a group, or via a high-definition television. Each angle
of every pose may also be enlarged, enabling artists to
zoom in on specific body parts to achieve a higher level
of detail.

Offensive Conduct
My Life on the Line
John “Hog” Hannah and Tom Hale
• Co-op available
This revealing, introspective look at an athlete’s intense drive to suc-
ceed in football also explores the adjustment to life after the final
whistle. John “Hog” Hannah was a two-time All-American for the
Crimson Tide under Bear Bryant. Hannah starred for the Patriots
from 1973 to 1985 and was one of the most beloved New England
Patriots players of all time. In his autobiography, the greatest offen-
sive lineman in the history of the sport candidly discusses the price of
dominating the trenches—from playing through compound fractures,
torn muscles, and broken fingers to giving and receiving gouged eye-
balls and testicle kicks when the referees weren’t looking his way. He
candidly discusses the rampant use of amphetamines, marijuana, and
other substances among NFL players during his career. Hannah also
recounts his battles with Patriots management. An introspective man
who found religion later in life, Hannah describes the forces that
shaped his drive to succeed and his addiction to control anything that
threatened to separate him from perpetuating the “glory of great-
ness.” Reflecting on how this mindset proved detrimental beyond his
playing days—leading to the breakup of his first marriage, his
estrangement from his children, and an egomaniacal approach in the
business world, he shares how he ultimately found God. Offensive
Conduct is both an inside look at the world of college and pro foot-
ball in the 1970s and 1980s and a chronicle of the ups and downs of
a driven, successful athlete.
John “Hog” Hannah is a former left guard with the New England
Patriots in the National Football League. He was named an “All-Pro”
10 times and won the NFL Players Association’s Offensive Lineman
of the Year award over four consecutive years. He has been named
the “Best Offensive Lineman of All Time” by Sports Illustrated and Excerpt:

I Did It My Way
A Remarkable Journey to the Hall of Fame
Bud Grant and Jim Bruton
Foreword by Sid Hartman
Introduction by Fran Tarkenton
• Co-op available
• Author’s previous books sold more than 45,000 copies
Minnesota sports legend Bud Grant tells the story of his remarkable
life as a player and coach in this rich firsthand account. From sur-
viving polio in childhood to a shining college sports career and
playing both basketball and football professionally, and from coach-
ing a championship-winning Canadian team to leading the
Minnesota Vikings to four Super Bowls, Grant shares his personal
perspective for the first time in this autobiography with entertaining
detail and refreshing openness. The book recounts his experiences
with star players and gives the inside story on Grant’s controversial
retirement in 1983 and his return to the sideline in 1985. Minnesota
sports lovers will also enjoy Grant’s reflection on his own idiosyn-
crasies, including his famous love of cold-weather football and ban-
ning of sideline heaters, and his postretirement life spent devoted to
environmental protection and being an outdoorsman.
Bud Grant is a retired Minnesota Vikings coach who led the team
for 18 seasons and to four Super Bowls and 11 division titles. One
of the most successful coaches in the history of the Canadian
Football League, Grant coached the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to four
Grey Cup championships in 10 seasons. He is also a former player
in both the National Basketball Association and the National
Football League. He lives in Bloomington, Minnesota. Jim Bruton is

Vikings 50, and We Love Our Twins and the coauthor of Every Day
Is Game Day and A Passion to Win. He is a former football player
for the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers and the Minnesota
Vikings. He lives in White Bear Lake, Minnesota. Sid Hartman is
one of the most recognizable sports figures in the history of the
Twin Cities. His first column appeared in the Minneapolis Daily
Times in 1945 and he has been a sports announcer at WCCO Radio
since 1955. He lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Fran Tarkenton is a
former NFL quarterback who played for the Minnesota Vikings and
the New York Giants. He is a member of the Pro Football Hall of
Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame and is recognized as

Keith Magnuson
The Inspiring Life and Times
of a Beloved Blackhawk
Doug Feldmann
Foreword by Cliff Koroll
• Co-op available
Written with the full support of Keith Magnuson’s wife and
children, this thrilling and insightful biography pays tribute to a
Chicago icon and true hockey legend. One of the most popular
Chicago Blackhawks of all time, defenseman Keith Magnuson was
raised on the raw, rough traditions of hockey in western Canada. He
captained the University of Denver team to its second straight
NCAA championship in the spring of 1969 and by autumn joined
Blackhawks stars Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, and Tony Esposito,
becoming the much-needed “policeman” for the team. Over the
course of the next several seasons, Magnuson and the Blackhawks
fell painfully short of their Stanley Cup aspirations; nonetheless,
Magnuson’s leadership qualities led to his being named captain of
the team. On December 15, 2003, Magnuson was in Toronto riding
in a car driven by former player, Rob Ramage: he was killed when
the car veered over the center line and struck an oncoming vehicle.
As veteran sportswriter Bob Verdi described Magnuson upon his
retirement from the Blackhawks, “there have been many finer
athletes in Chicago, but not one finer person,” and this biography
shares the story of his remarkable life.
Doug Feldmann is a professor in the College of Education at
Northern Kentucky University and a former scout for the Cincinnati
Reds, Seattle Mariners, and San Diego Padres. He is the author of
numerous books, including El Birdos, Fleeter Than Birds, Miracle
Collapse, September Streak, and St. Louis Cardinals Past and
Present. He lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. Cliff Koroll and Keith
Magnuson were teammates growing up in Saskatchewan, at the
University of Denver, as well as on the Chicago Blackhawks. He
delivered the eulogy at Magnuson’s funeral and is the current presi-
dent of the Blackhawks Alumni Association. He lives in Chicago.

the guy went flying! I said to myself, I’ve got to practice

Inspired, Pierre took the bus home to St. Catharines the

The game proceeded along smoothly until Pierre’s moment

“I’ve learned a lot from it, and I recommend it highly.”
—Joe Sheehan, Sports Illustrated
and the Sheehan Newsletter, on the Outsider Baseball Bulletin
• Co-op available

With new research and revelations that will surprise even the most
ardent baseball history buffs, this engaging account tells the story
of the mostly forgotten world of the mercenaries, scalawags, and
outcasts who made up the independent professional ball clubs.
Combining meticulous research with modern analytics, the book
provides a deeper understanding of how vast and eclectic the world
of professional baseball was during the first half of the 20th centu-
ry. It illuminates an alternate baseball universe where Babe Ruth,
Rube Waddell, and John McGraw crossed bats with the Cuban
Stars, Tokyo Giants, Brooklyn Bushwicks, dozens of famous Negro
league teams, and novelty acts such as the House of David and
Bloomer Girls. Written in a gritty prose style, this entertaining book
shares the stories of these unsung players and uses a critical lens to
separate fact from fiction.

CHICAGO REVIEW PRESS MARCH
Excerpt:
During the 1930s, news reports drifted northward every March
about the mysterious band of baseball gypsies who dared challenge
the toughest of major league teams. Sponsored by a religious sect
in Michigan, with a roster comprised of ballplayers from the sect,
this group of vagabond diamond drifters held their own against
Bill Terry, Mel Ott, and the New York Giants, battled valiantly ver-
sus Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and the mighty Bronx Bombers, and
easily disposed of the lowly St. Louis Browns, 1-0.
According to newspaper stories, members of this ballclub, called
the House of David, had to abide by certain rules. They were non-
smoking, chaste vegetarians who refused to shave or cut their hair.
In deference to their religious beliefs (and despite their obvious,
on-field baseball wizardry), they refused to pursue professional
careers in the secular world of organized baseball. The House of
David played the major leaguers in spring, then semi-pro and
minor league teams in the summer, sometimes logging more than
200 games and 20,000 travel miles annually, because they loved
Jesus and they loved baseball, though not necessarily in that order.

of baseball’s second oldest ballpark. In
Wrigley Field: The Centennial, Les Krantz
tells the story of Wrigley’s first 100 years—
from the origins of the ivy on the outfield
walls and ballpark traditions such as throw-
ing back home run balls to Ruth’s called
shot in the 1933 World Series and unforget-
table moments featuring stars Ernie Banks,
Ron Santo, Billy Williams, Ryne Sandberg,
Greg Maddux, and more. Featuring numer-
ous photographs, Wrigley’s first century is
beautifully documented and an originally
produced DVD narrated by Lou Boudreau
Jr. and Ron Santo Jr. features footage from
throughout the stadium’s history and inter-
views with Jack Brickhouse, Ron Santo,
Ernie Banks, and others.
Les Krantz has worked for Chicago magazine, the Chicago Tribune, Esquire, Golf, and Ski. He is the author of many sports books,
including Dark Horses and Underdogs, Not Till the Fat Lady Sings, Reel Baseball, Yankee Classics, and Yankee Stadium: A Tribute.
He lives in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin.

20 Simple Sewing Projects
Emma Curtis and Elizabeth Parnell
• Co-op available
Inspired by the picturesque Devon countryside
where they live, crafters Emma Curtis and
Elizabeth Parnell have created a book packed full
of designs for bags, accessories, and delightful
items for the home in a style that is fresh,
feminine, and unmistakably English. The book
carefully describes each project with an emphasis
on the function and practicality of the projects,
which are divided into five sections: gifts, family-
life projects, household items, personal items, and
garden and entertainment decorations. The
sewing designs are characterized by a simple, vin-
tage-floral-patterned style, but it is the unique
voice of the two passionate English crafters that
presents a distinct focus on family and home,
making the projects stand out from others.
Perfect for those new to sewing as well as more
seasoned stitchers, the techniques are described in
a down-to-earth and simplified way with helpful
images taking the reader through each step of
every project.
Emma Curtis and Elizabeth Parnell are the
owners and operators of a craft store that sells a range of their successful line of hand-sewn bags and gifts.

Knitting Double
Mastering the Two-Color Technique
with Over 30 Reversible Projects
Anja Belle
Knitting double, also know as double knitting, is a tech-
nique by which knitters can create two fabrics at the same
time, and this guidebook includes step-by-step instructions
with photographs to help master this method. Crafters
learn how the front and back are knitted simultaneously
and the stitches are worked in pairs. While the “right
side” of the fabric normally faces outward, and the
“wrong side” faces the inside of the work, double knitting
creates the illusion of a fabric with no wrong side. More
than 30 projects are included, beginning with basic pat-
terns and simpler projects, such as hats or scarves, and
moving into the more complex, such as mittens, pothold-
ers, and even cell phone cozies. This book is the perfect
resource for the intermediate to advanced knitter looking
to expand their repertoire.
Anja Belle is a popular German knitting designer.

As the captain of a useful frigate, Kydd is claimed by the Leeward
Islands station, exchanging the harsh situation in South America for
the warmth and delights of the Caribbean. It’s a sea change for
Kydd, who revisits places and people that figured in his time as a
young seaman. Some are nostalgic and pleasing, while others bring
challenges of a personal nature. In Europe, Napoleon is triumphant
on land, but so far away in the Caribbean, Kydd and the others feel
secure and make the most of running down prizes and sending off
fat convoys of sugar to England. But, in a stroke of genius,
Bonaparte finds a way to take revenge for Trafalgar and shocks
Kydd out of complacency when an element from his past returns
and Kydd is accused of murder. In a stroke of irony, it is that same
past that may just provide Kydd the means to clear his name.

Blood on a Saint
Anne Emery
“Halifax lawyer Anne Emery’s terrific series featuring lawyer Monty
Collins and priest Brennan Burke gets better with every book.”
—Globe and Mail on Death at Christy Burke’s
• Co-op available
• Part of the Collins-Burke Mystery series
In the seventh book of the deftly written Collins-Burke Mystery
series, Father Brennan Burke’s patience is pushed to the limit when a
young woman announces to the world that the Virgin Mary has
appeared to her in the churchyard, and hordes of pilgrims, souvenir
hawkers, and reporters converge on the scene. But, as unwelcome as
these guests may be, they pale in comparison to yet another aggrava-
tion in Father Burke’s life, a controversial talk show host who clash-
es with Burke upon arriving in town. Events take a darker turn
when a body is found at the apparition site, and the talk show host
is picked up for the murder. There is enough aggravation to go
around, as Monty Collins learns when he takes on the loud-
mouthed TV man as a client. Monty and Brennan both have a stake
in uncovering the truth about the murder, and they both learn dis-
turbing things about the accused man and other suspects in the case.
Neither man can talk to the other about what he has learned, how-
ever, due to solicitor–client confidentiality on one side, the seal of
the confessional on the other.
Anne Emery is a lawyer and the award-winning author of the
Collins-Burke Mystery series. The first book of the series, Sign of the
Cross, won the Arthur Ellis Award for Best First Novel. The fifth
book in the series, Children in the Morning, won a silver medal in the
2011 Independent Publisher Book Awards and the 2011 Dartmouth
Book Award for Fiction. She lives in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
