A critical review of Kylie Minogues Ultimate Kylie CD #1. N.B.

Ratings on the five point scale, Truly Great Song, Great Song, Good Song, Filler, Terrible Song. 1. Better The Devil You Know. Filler. Begins with a jarring, perhaps intentionally crass, putting on the ritz. Bad or worse? Theme moves on into jaded wonderment maybe puzzlement. Which proposition / proposal to take up? Will we ever come to terms? Reading the riot act, laying down the law, making it clear that shes looking for commitment no more excuses, no more What she wants: say youll never go. 2. The Loco-motion. Great song. An attempt to start a worldwide dance craze. One that didnt make it. Nevertheless the song reached #2 in the UK and #3 in the US Unbridled joyousness. Lyrics rather derivative, but the song has spirit! Kylies joyousness is so sincere! Moving 3. I Should Be So Lucky. Filler. Starts out a bit down in the dumps, but all covered up. But moves on to hope, projecting with a strong desire. Wants to hit the jackpot, get lucky, be however so lucky as it takes as to win him over. Themes throughout of drama mixed with melodrama. Wants to be noticed. Dreaming of striking it lucky 4. Step Back In Time. Great song. The good old days jazzed up. Remembrance. Decisions of the past, remembrance. Were the world otherwise, had one chosen otherwise, what is the point? Theres nothing to it, step back in time Left with nothing but memories fades out 5. Shocked. Good song. Puzzlement expressed musically. Lyrics start tell me urgently wondering in puzzlement surrounded by feelings I hardly recognise shocked by the power of love melodrama and futility underneath, hidden, putting on a front, being there for others the duet continues, in resentment, gainsaying Kylie Kylie again, putting herself on the line, shocked by the power of love! 6. What Do I Have To Do. Filler. Starts out with slightly jarring themes. Higher and higher. My excuse. What do I have to do, to get the message through Wants to be noticed! Loud jarring interlude Only you Reprises her appellation 7. Wouldnt Change A Thing. Good song. Melodramatic themes and lyrics begin If I got to do it all again self-justification I wouldnt change a thing Jarring repetitiveness interlude Questioning in my heart I wouldnt change a thing fades out

8. Hand On Your Heart. Great song. Starts out happy and boppy. A song with themes and lyrics the embodiment of happiness. Look me in the eye Put your hand on your heart and tell me Its all over I want to hear you say, you dont want my love Wont be gainsaid I want to talk about forever Duet, hand on my heart! 9. Especially For You. Great song. Considering my love for you Especially for you I still feel the same Duet especially for you together Throughout the themes and tone of voice suggest consideration for others / reciprocation / I-thou projection (as if the differences between these be more than mere words) !! How nice 10. Got To Be Certain. Good song. Happiness and boppiness mixes with impacted second order doubtfulness. Lovers should stick together Ive got to be so sure Boys are all the same Exceptionalism Make up my mind Singling out her man Im not asking, for my love to last forever Ive got to be, got to be certain, so sure! 11. Je Ne Sais Pas Pourquai. French for I dont know the reason, I think, according to my Collins School Dictionary! Filler. Wonderment. Doubt and wonderment. Rain falling down. Stood up again. I still love you. I have doubts, but still believe you. Reprises these themes again fades out 12. Give Me Just A Little More Time. Good song. Second order happiness and boppiness. Lifes too short to make a mistake. Theres not need to act foolishly. Remembrance. Dont you worry. Reviewing the past, looking back Give me a little more time Theres no doubt Our love will surely grow fades out 13. Never Too Late. Filler. Its never too late to change your mind. Tapping the feet. Building up towards some passion. Ive got so much love to give you. Themes and tone of voice suggest growing passionateness. 14. Tears On My Pillow. Theme I think from the movie The Delinquents. Great song. Moody and loving, mixed. Tears on my pillow. Lets start anew. Tempt the hand of fate. Love is not a toy. Tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, caused by you. Id gladly take you back. Reprises then fades out. 15. Celebration. Filler. Underlying themes higher and higher. Growing joy. Weve got to celebrate and have a good time its time to come together everyone around the world Tapping the feet. Mood changes to happier and boppier
