Biology B Unit # 3 Dissection Lessons and Portfolio Virtual Dissection is an application that runs on your computernot on a web page.

As a result, you must download and install the application on your computer to use it. To install the Lab Investigator, you must have/download Adobe Air. Once this program (Air) has been installed/updated (step 1), download the Lab Investigator. Be prepared: this lab can take from 2 to 3 hours to download and install, depending on the speed of your Internet connection!
This project begins with U3 L10 and finishes in U3 L18. Lets look ahead to see what this portfolio will entail.

Choose one project to complete: 1. Compare respiratory systems of the earthworm, frog, and squid. Explain how the specimen breathes and which organs are involved. 2. Compare circulatory systems of the earthworm, frog, and squid. Include major organs and vessels, blood transfer process, how the systems are similar, and how the systems differ. Explain the differences in terms of structure and environment. 3. Compare digestive systems of the earthworm, frog, and squid. Include how food is ingested, how nutrients are extracted, and how waste is processed. Your portfolio project should include a written description along with one of these visuals: 1. a table with a column for all the components of the system and each specimen in order to show the similarities and differences 2. a flowchart of the systems process for each specimen 3. an image or diagram of each specimen showing the system components appropriately labeled
MORE DETAILS ARE PROVIDED AT THE END OF THIS DOCUMENT.

Unit 3-Lesson 10: Overview: Lesson 10:

Complete the External Observation and Internal Dissection labs for the earthworm, the frog, and the squid. What you are actually doing is watching six videos (two for each specimen: external observation and internal observation). Take notes about

the videos in the note area on the right. You can pause and restart the video in order to complete your notes. When the External Observation video is completed, click on the orange arrow on the left to see the video list and select Internal Dissection. Watch the Internal Dissection lab video for the specimen, taking notes as you observe the lab work. Navigate to another specimen using the navigation menu and complete the lab videos.

Instructions: Select a specimen. (You will be completing all three. Start with the Earthworm. This one is selected and loaded by default as the program opens.) *The program does not have a maximize screen button, but you can click and drag a corner or edge to enlarge it.

1. Click Start your observation. You are now in the laboratory.

2. Click on the External Observation video to launch it in the video playback frame. Put your headphones or speakers on as there is talking in the videos.

*There is a full-screen option for the videos. Although it does not truly make it full-screen, it does enlarge it for easier viewing.

3. Take notes about the video in the note area on the right. You can pause and restart the video in order to complete your notes. Make sure to put all notes in your own words. YOU WILL NEED THESE NOTES IN ORDER TO COMPLETE THIS PROJECT WHEN YOU REACH LESSON 18. * There is a camera tool that allows you to take screenshots during the video. When viewing your photos, you can click on the magnifier icon in the upper right of a photo to enlarge and then move it around with your mouse for better viewing.

When the External Observation video is completed, click on the orange arrow on the left to see the video list and select Internal Dissection. Watch the Internal Dissection lab video for the specimen, taking notes and photo screenshots as you observe the lab work. Once both the external and internal videos for the earthworm have been completed (with notes and photo screenshots), then navigate to the next specimen Click on MY LABORATORY and choose SPECIMEN SELECT. This takes you back to the Earthworm homepage.

Click on the orange arrow on the right to advance to the next specimen-the frog.

I suggest you complete all the above instructions for the frog next (steps 1-5). Once the frog is completed, move on and complete the squid. List of the video lengths: 1. Earthworm External 3:08; Internal 2:26 2. Frog External 3:00; Internal 3:03 3. Squid External 3:16; Internal 1:53

When you are done for the day, choose Log Out, then choose Quit. This will save your work.

Unit 3 Lesson 11 Overview: Complete the Digestive System labs for any two of the specimens.

I RECOMMEND THAT YOU COMPLETE THIS FOR ALL THREE SPECIMENS AT THIS TIME. (Youll be asked to complete them anyways in lesson 18.) Use the narrow orange bar on the left to scroll to the digestive system video.

Instructions: Click on the video name to launch it in the video playback frame. Take notes about the video in the note area on the right.

Some videos already have several images in the library, so you dont have to add any at this time. If the video you are watching does not have images in the library, click the camera in the upper right corner of the video 2-3 times to capture some useful screen shots.

Unit 3 Lesson 16 & Lesson 17 No dissection work in these lessons Unit 3 Lesson 18 Overview: In this lesson you will complete a Portfolio assessment that enables you to apply the information you have collected throughout the unit to one of the projects presented in Lesson 10. 1. Launch the virtual dissection tool. 2. Complete the appropriate system lab for the third specimen (the one you did not do in an earlier lesson). I HOPE THAT YOU HAVE TAKEN MY ADVICE AND WATCHED ALL THE SPECIMEN VIDEOS AS YOU WORKED YOUR WAY THROUGH EACH PREVIOUS LESSON SO THAT YOU DO NOT NEED TO WATCH THE OTHERS NOW. 3. Review your lab notes from the earlier lesson related to the system you have chosen for your project. 4. Explore the reference material for all three specimens related to the project system.

5. Complete the written portion of your project.

1. THIS MUST BE TYPED IN A WORD DOCUMENT FORMAT!

2. Use the notes you put in your dissection notebook within the Lab Investigator. 3.

6. Complete the visual portion of your project. If you choose to complete labeled images or diagrams (choice #3 below), you can either use copyright free pictures or original diagrams that you draw.(If you choose to draw any images, you will need to photograph or scan them so they can be copy/pasted into your Word document. If you convert them to pdf, there is a free online program that will convert your pdf into a word document format. Then youll be able to copy/paste them into your report.) All images must be clear, detailed, and labeled; large enough to see all the system components.

Your portfolio project should include a written description along with one of these visuals: 1. a table with a column for all the components of the system and each specimen in order to show the similarities and differences 2. a flowchart of the systems process for each specimen 3. an image or diagram of each specimen showing the system components appropriately labeled

As this is the VISUAL component of your project, what you submit must be visual, not simply written words. For example: 1. If you choose this option, you need to create an actual data table using the insert table function in Word. The table must have an appropriate title and both the rows and columns must be labeled to explain the information they contain. You can also use Excel, and then copy/paste your chart into your word document. 2. If you choose this option, you can use the Shapes tool to create your flow chart. If you have Office 2010, you can also use the SmartArt tool. 3. If you choose this option, you will need three images-one for each specimen. You can use the Textbox insert and the Shapes tool so you can label all the system components that correspond to your chosen system.

7. At the end of lesson 18, you will submit your project as a portfolio assessment.
EXTRA CREDIT:

Exporting Your Observations

You can save to your computer any notes you take in Lab Investigator: Virtual Dissection . THIS IS HOW YOU CAN EARN EXTRA CREDIT ON THIS PORTFOLIO. YOU WILL COPY/PASTE ALL YOUR NOTES TAKEN ON THE OTHER TWO SYSTEMS NOT PART OF YOUR PROJECT. PLACE THEM INTO A SEPARATE DOCUMENT AND THEN UPLOAD IT ALONG WITH YOUR FINAL PORTFOLIO. Note: If either of the required elements of this portfolio are incomplete, you will not be eligible to earn the extra credit points. I experienced problems trying to use the export feature of this program. Tech support is currently trying to help me solve the problem So instead, I recommend you copy/paste your notes into a new word document. You will need to type in the title (such as Circulatory Systems; earthworm (paste your notes), frog (paste your notes), squid (paste your notes).
