Elements

Written By Timothy Whitfield

(Episode opens with Ash, Pikachu, Cilan, Iris and Axew looking over a river and Cilan speaks to Ash and Iris.) Cilan: Okay, guys. What do you think about having lunch here? Ash: I think this would be a good place to have lunch. Iris: Yeah, this is a very nice place. Pikachu: Pika. Axew: Axew. Cilan: Okay, then. Ill start making our lunch right away. Why dont you two go do something while I cook? Both: Sure thing. Pikachu: Pika. Axew: Axew. (A few minutes later, Ash and Iris are sitting near the edge of the river with their feet in the water and Iris speaks to Ash.) Iris: Ahh, isnt this relaxing, Ash? Ash: It sure is, Iris. It sure is nice to just kick back and relax. Pikachu: Pika. Axew: Axew.

(They both lie back to the ground and sigh in comfort, but then Ash spots something shiny across from him and he lifts his feet out of the water and walks over to find a shiny rock. He picks it up, and walks back over to Iris and shows it to her. Ash speaks to Iris.) Ash: Hey, Iris. Take a look at this rock I found. Iris: (in wonderment.) Wow. What kind of rock do you think it is? Ash: I dont know. I think that it might be silver. Iris: You know, I think that it might be silver, too. (Cilan calls out to them.) Cilan: Hey, guys. Lunch is ready. Both: Okay. Iris: Well show Cilan the rock right after we eat. Ash: All right, then. (A few minutes later, after theyve eaten, Ash and Iris comment on the food that was eaten.) Iris: Mmm, that was really good. Ash: Yeah. Cilan really knows how to make good food.

Cilan: Oh, thanks, guys. So, what were you two doing while I was cooking? Ash: Iris and I were just relaxing near the river with our feet in the water, but then I spotted a shiny rock right nearby, so I showed it to Iris and we both think that it might be silver. Cilan: Really? Let me see it. (Ash takes the rock out of his pocket and shows it to Cilan. Cilan examines it.) Cilan: Hmm. Ash: So, what do you think? Cilan: Well, it seems to me that this rock is really made of zinc, not silver. Ash and Iris: What? Pikachu: Pika? Axew: Axew? Ash: How can you tell its zinc, Cilan? Cilan: Well, silver has a more polished surface to it. Zinc has a dull look to it and is a little darker. You two only thought it was silver because it had the same color as silver. Iris: Oh, okay.

Cilan: Dont feel bad, guys. Ash: Oh, we dont feel bad at all. It was just a little surprising. Iris: Yeah, thats all it was. Now Im starting to wonder why zinc is so different from silver. Cilan: I dont know how to tell you that, Iris. How are we supposed to know the difference between them? Ash: I know. Lets give Siara a call. (He pulls out the Pokepilot and calls Siara.) She might know about this. Hi, Siara. Siara: Hey, guys. Whats going on? Iris: The guys and I were just having lunch near a river. It was very pleasant. Siara: Im sure it was. So, whats the problem? Iris: While Ash and I were waiting for Cilan for cook lunch, I spotted a shiny rock nearby, and I picked it up, showed it to Iris and we both though it was silver. Then after we had lunch, we showed it to Cilan, and he said it was actually zinc we found instead. So, we wanted to ask you why zinc is different from silver. Siara: Ill be glad to tell you. To better understand the difference, Im going to tell you all about the elements. Ash: Okay, but what are elements?

Siara: An element is a substance composed of atoms having an identical number of protons in each nucleus. Iris: Well, how many elements are out there and how are they organized? Siara: Currently, there are 118 elements that are identified in the world and the way that elements are organized is by a special table known as the Periodic Table. Cilan: How does the Periodic Table help organize the elements? Siara: Well, the elements on the Periodic Table are organized into 3 categories: metals, metalloids, and non-metals. Ash: Which elements are metals? Siara: Elements like iron, copper, nickel, gold, platinum, and of course, silver and zinc are all metals. Iris: What is a metalloid? Siara: A metalloid is an element that is a mixture of metals and non-metals. Some good examples of metalloids are silicon, boron, and germanium. Cilan: Okay, how about non-metals? Siara: A non-metal is an element that isnt a metal and has a lower density than metals. Elements like helium, hydrogen, fluoride and chlorine are all non-metals.

Iris: Knowing more about the elements is pretty interesting. Siara: It sure is interesting. How about we do a lab to better understand them? Cilan: Sure thing, Siara. (He looks at the viewers.) Would you like to do the lab with us? (He waits for an answer from the viewers.) Good. (Cut to a video screen in Siaras lab.) Siara: Okay, here are 9 different kinds of elements. What youre going to do is to put each element into the correct category. Okay? Everyone: Okay. Siara: Good, then, lets get started. Heres some copper. What category of elements does this go in? Ash: It goes into the metals category. Siara: Good one, Ash. Now, heres boron. What category of elements does this go in? Iris: It belongs in the metalloids category. Siara: Way to go, Iris. Heres hydrogen. What category of elements does this go in? Cilan: It belongs in the non-metals category.

Siara: Very good, Cilan. Heres some chloride. What category of elements does this go in? Iris: It goes into the non-metals category. Siara: Good job, Iris. Now, heres some platinum. What category of elements does this go in? Cilan: It belongs in the metals category. Siara: Great, Cilan. Now, heres some silicon. What category of elements does this go in? Ash: It goes into the metalloids category. Siara: Great one, Ash. Now, heres germanium. What category of elements does this go in? Cilan: It goes into the metalloids category. Siara: All right, Cilan. Heres some fluoride. What category of elements does this go in? Ash: It goes into in the non-metals category. Siara: Great job, Ash. Finally, heres some gold. What category of elements does this go in? Iris: It belongs in the metals category. Siara: Very good, Iris. Good job, guys. Everyone: Thanks, Siara.

Pikachu: Pika. Axew: Axew. Siara: No problem. Well, Ive got to get back to work. See you later, guys. Everyone: See you, Siara. Cilan: Okay, guys. How about we go over what we know? Ash: Good idea, Cilan. But before we do that, lets ask our friends at home if they want to go over with us. Iris: All right, Ash. (She looks at the viewers.) Would you like to go over with us? (She waits for an answer from the viewers.) Oh, good. Okay, what is an element? (She waits for an answer from the viewers.) Its a substance composed of atoms having an identical number of protons in each nucleus. Way to go. Ash: Whats a metalloid? (He waits for an answer from the viewers.) Its an element thats a mixture of metals and nonmetals. All right. Cilan: What is a non-metal? (He waits for an answer from the viewers.) Its element that isnt a metal and has a lower density than metals. Very good. Everyone: Good work, guys. Pikachu: Pika.

Axew: Axew. Ash: All right, what should we do now, guys? Iris: I dont know, Ash. What about you, Cilan? Cilan: Hmm. (He thinks for a minute.) Iris: Well? Cilan: Hmm. Ah, Ive got it. We can pick out three elements from the Periodic Table and sort them into the three categories. Iris: Thats a good idea, Cilan. How about we ask our friends at home if they want to do it with us? Ash: Okay, Iris. (He looks at the viewers.) Do you want to do this with us? (He waits for an answer from the viewers.) All right. Pikachu: Pika. (Cut to the Periodic Table.) Cilan: All right, were going to select three elements off of the Table and all you have to do is pick the correct category that each one belongs in. Okay, I choose helium. Ash: I pick copper.

Iris: And I pick boron. Ash: Okay, lets get going. Where does boron go? (He waits for an answer from the viewers.) It goes into the metalloids category. All right. Cilan: Now, where does copper go? (He waits for an answer from the viewers.) It goes into the metals category. Very good. Iris: Where does helium go? (She waits for an answer from the viewers.) It goes into the non-metals category. Way to go. (Cut back to the gang.) Everyone: Good job, guys. Pikachu: Pika. Axew: Axew. Ash: That was really enjoyable. Iris: It sure was, Ash. Thanks for thinking of it, Cilan. Cilan: No problem, guys. I really enjoyed doing it, as well. (Ash walks over to the table and picks up the zinc.) Ash: You know, even though we didnt find silver, it was still cool that we found an element we didnt know about. Iris: Youre right, Ash. It was cool.

Cilan: It sure was great that we learned a lot about the elements. Iris: Yeah, it was a lot of fun learning about all those elements. Ash: It sure was fun. It was just incredible how many elements are out there. (They all turn to the viewers.) Everyone: Thanks for the help, guys. Pikachu: Pika. Axew: Axew. (Cut to everyone sitting at the table.) Iris: We had a pretty good day today. Did you have a good day? (She waits for an answer from the viewers.) Oh, okay. I liked that we did that activity. Cilan: I liked learning about the elements. Ash: I liked doing the lab. Everyone: Thanks again, guys. See you next time. (They all wave goodbye to the viewers and the scenery irises out, ending the episode.)
