New York State Police Academy Graduation, 199th Session *** MEDIA ADVISORY *** Event: New York State Police Academy Graduation, 199th Session Date: Wednesday, May 29, 2013 Time: 11:00 A.M. Location: Empire State Plaza Convention Center, Albany, NY Nearly 200 new Troopers will be honored for their perseverance and dedication in completing the 199th session of the Basic School of the New York State Police Academy during graduation exercises at the Empire State Plaza in Albany, New York. Each and every class that graduates from the State Police Academy has a myriad of stories of obstacles they have overcome to become New York State Troopers; acts of heroism they have been involved in as a civilian, a member of the military, or as a police officer in another agency and of hardships they have endured throughout their life. The 199th Session of the Basic School is no exception. Below are a few select stories of the Troopers of the 199th Session who are available for interview IMMEDIATELY following the ceremony. Media requests for interviews with new members must be submitted by 12:00 pm on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at pio@troopers.ny.gov. Trooper Nicholas E. Bloomer, Burnt Hills, Age 34 Prior to becoming a Member of the NYSP, Trooper Bloomer was a Staff Sergeant with the United States Marine Corps. As a Marine, Trooper Bloomer was deployed to central Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom II, serving as a UH-1N Huey Crew Chief. In one mission, his Huey was providing close air support for infantry units who were traveling in a 20+ vehicle convoy. The convoy was ambushed and came under fire from two separate hill sides and a neighboring orchard. His Huey used tactical air strikes to neutralize the threats and save the convoy from any loss of life on the ground. As a result of this flight, Trooper Bloomer was awarded two Presidential Air Medals for Heroism in Flight, both decorated with the combat V for valor.

Trooper Brad D. Natalizio, Middletown, Age 30 Trooper Natalizio joined the NYSP with seven years of prior law enforcement experience; one year with NYPD and six years with the Village of Chester Police Department. In the true spirit of community policing, Trooper Natalizio took great pride in improving the communities where he worked. In the spring of 2012, while in Graduate School at John Jay College, Trooper Natalizio drafted a police-community survey in an attempt to identify police-citizen issues within the V/Chester. After reviewing the surveys and meeting with community members, Trooper Natalizio proposed changes that ultimately improved the quality of life in the V/Chester, particularly the Whispering Hills Condo Complex.

Trooper Donald E. Cheatham, Jr., New Windsor, Age 31 Trooper Cheatham has had the opportunity to save two lives prior to graduating from the NYSP Academy. In 2010, Trooper Cheatham was tubing with a group of friends in San Antonio, Texas, when one of his friends fell out of the tube while going down a waterfall. His friend did not surface and Trooper Cheatham jumped in to assist. After struggling to bring his friend to the surface, he was finally able to get him out of the river and safely on to ground. His heroic actions definitely saved his friend. Additionally, as a recruit here in the Academy, Trooper Cheatham had a chance to save a fellow recruit. In the Dining Hall one evening, a fellow recruit was choking on turkey and displaying signs that he was unable to breath. Trooper Cheatham immediately assisted by performing the Heimlich maneuver, which provided a safe and happy ending to a scary moment for his fellow recruit. Trooper Dwight R. Hermann, Warwick, Age 25 Trooper Hermann grew up in a difficult situation; surrounded by domestic violence. He remembers how he and his brother used to cover their ears while the violence occurred sometimes multiple times a week. One night, a neighbor called the police due to the noise and a Trooper responded and arrested his father. Trooper Hermann felt that this Trooper saved his mothers life and was inspired to become a New York State Trooper after this incident. Trooper Hermann hopes that as a State Trooper he can help children that are in the same situation as he was as a child. Trooper Aaron E. Teichner, Melrose, Age 41 Trooper Teichner, a Chief Warrant Officer Four in the United States Army, has completed two tours in Iraq, totaling 26 months. In 2004, he received a Combat Medal, with a V for Valor when his wingman was shot down over the city of Tal-Afar and he was able to stay on station and coordinate the rescue of both crew Members. In 2007, Trooper Teichner participated in the surge to retake Baghdad. Additionally, Trooper Teichner has flown missions in support of Hurricane Irene, Hurricane Sandy and Tropical Storm Lee. Trooper Teichner has honorably served our nation for 21 years. Trooper Carlos V. Spencer, Buffalo, Age 35 Trooper Spencer was elected as class representative. He will be assigned to Troop D. Trooper Devin A. Dunn, Lancaster, Age 27 Trooper Dunn is the winner of the Academic Performance Award. Throughout the Academy

training program, he achieved an overall academic average of 98.36 percent. He will be assigned to Troop E. Trooper Devin R. Bacon, Stafford, Age 28 Trooper Bacon is the winner of the Superintendents Firearms Proficiency Award. During firearms training, he fired an average score of 250 out of a possible 250. He will be assigned to Troop E. Trooper Zachary A. Eppler, Plattsburgh, Age 25 Trooper Eppler is the winner of the Joseph T. Aversa Physical Training Award. During the physical agility testing, he achieved the highest score of all 192 members of the 199th Session, a tribute to his physical conditioning. He will be assigned to Troop B.
