Basis for Registration

To be licensed as a professional engineer applicants must meet the following criteria: be academically qualified have obtained sufficient acceptable engineering work experience in their area of qualification have an understanding of local practices and conditions be competent in the English language be of good character, and demonstrate an understanding of professional practice and ethics issues.

Academic Requirement Applicants for licensure must meet one of the following academic qualifications requirement: An undergraduate degree in engineering accredited by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board (CEAB). An unaccredited undergraduate degree in engineering or science from a school, college or university recognized by Council and successful completion of any required confirmatory examinations.

If the undergraduate engineering degree is not CEAB accredited or recognized or is from a Country that does not have a reciprocal mobility agreement with Canada, the applicants academic and experience qualifications will be assessed by the Board of Examiners. If the Board of Examiners determines that the applicant is eligible to write examination, the applicant may demonstrate that they are academically qualified through an examination program as assigned by the Board of Examiners based on the Engineers Canada Examination Syllabus. Experience Requirement The experience requirement is four years of engineering experience approved by the Board of Examiners, with a minimum of one year in a North American environment. The experience must be documented on the Engineers Nova Scotia Experience Record form. A minimum of 4 pages per year of experience is required. It is very important that the experience records are signed by the applicant and the Supervisor or Employer where the experience was obtained. English Language Requirement When an applicants first language is not English, proof of the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing in English, is required. Assessment Application Requirements The Board of Examiners requires the following documents officially translated into English: 1. Completed Application with all required fees and dues 2. Degree certificate 3. Original transcript(s) of marks from the University(s) attended 4. Course description for the undergraduate engineering degree and any post grad engineering degrees. 5. Verified Detailed Work History 6. Photo Identification Applications will be submitted to the Board of Examiners when all required documents are received. Application forms are available on the Engineers Nova Scotia web site at www.engineersnovascotia.ca under Registration / Assessment or the applicable category of registration. An engineer practicing in Nova Scotia is required by law under the Nova Scotia Engineering Profession Act & ByLaws to be registered with the Association of Professional Engineers of Nova Scotia (Engineers Nova Scotia).
