high-tech superpower:

How Israel turns lemons into lemonade

Did you know in Israel people develop about 5.000 technology projects every year? Moreover, in Europe establish from 600 to 700 beginning ingenterprises in the same period. Besides, Israel has the highest percent of the world about patents granted in relation to the amount of people. In Israel locate the facilities of the sections of research and development s of several international technology enterprises in the area of equipment of communication, components, softwares, semiconductors, internet communication and more. These research and development centers employed more tan 35.000 professionals in 2010, turning Isral into a global center for strategic technology development. But, how is it posible that a young and small state, which is around of hostile neighbors, which lacks of natural resources and its continually receiving large groups of immigrants becomes a high-tech superpower? It seems all of that physical and political disadvantages have become the main technology and business benefits. Life in Israel could be tense, especially by the dangerous area in which it is located. Since the beginning Israel has had to rely on its people and on creative solutions to defend themselves. Since the inception of the state, until today, military service has been obligatory. People might think that, in this way, it affects the start of higher education and working life, but in fact, in most cases, becomes an important advantage. Many talented young people are called to serve in high-tech units, being exposed at an early age, to sophisticated work experiences that require creative solutions to real-life situations. Many of these

young people take advantage of this experience in his civil life, becoming entrepreneurs and partners in the area of high technology.

Challenges in political and security field. In the history of Israel, many problematic events have become eneficial situations miraculously. For example, during the 80s, the Lavi state project failure, became an unpredictable success. The Lavi project was a great attempt to develop an Israeli warplane. This project was based on the experience of the Israel Aerospace Industry with the support of the United States. This attracted great minds and the best resources and employed many engineers and technologists. However, the costs exceeded the economic potential of Israel and the project was canceled in 1987. As a result, hundreds of engineers with experience in high-tech aerodynamics, avionics, computers and electronics were incorporated into the commercial market. There was no unemployment and economic crisis. By contrast, the failure of the Lavi project was considered one of the greatest impetus for high-tech industry in Israel. From there, the defense industry focused on creating components, electronics, avionics and other systems installed in American platforms or other countries. The high-tech civil industries get expanding in the areas of safety, electronics, computers, software and the Internet. And that is why Israel has been recognized as a leader in high-tech industries, Israeli investment in research and development are higher than anyone. With its culturally diverse population and multilingual force, Israel is the preferred at time to serve the demands of its customers around the globe. That's why many multinational corporations prefer to work with Israeli suppliers about products and services. The Israeli government has signed a number of cooperation agreements with foreign governments in order to encourage contacts between Israel and foreign companies, and to facilitate joint projects in manufacturing and marketing.
