17.
a. What ideas about government do you think English settlers brought with
them to the Americas?
i. These basic ideas were ordered government, limited government,
and representative government. The Magna Carta and the English
Bill of Rights established principles and influenced ideas in the
nation.
b. How might those ideas have contributed to the outbreak of the American
Revolution?
i. Some of these new ideas helped give America new forms of
government, which conflicted with British laws and caused a
Revolution.
18. During the American Revolution, Thomas Paine used the following words to
encourage the colonists during a particularly grim time. “What we obtain too cheaply,
we esteem too light; it is costliness only that gives everything its value.”
c. What did he mean by this?
i. Everything should have its appropriate value and not everything
should be cheap although I would be better that way. That way,
different items have their own value.
d. Do you agree or disagree? Give an example to defend your position.

i. I agree. For example, a pound of gold should not cost the same
amount of money as a pound of apples. Because there is less gold in
the world, it should cost more money. And just because we complain
about prices doesn’t mean it should be cheaper just to make people
happy.
20. Why would people who abuse their power be “lost” if others were “to rise and
look me in the face”?
a. It means that even absolute rulers who abuse their power can’t rule alone.
They need help from other people, and if those people had the courage to
stand up and fight against this monarch, the monarch would have no one to
help him rule, and as a result, would be “lost.”
21. What do you think Voltaire meant by the phrase “grow fat on their blood”
a. Voltaire is referring to the upper class members and how they grow rich
from the lower class people below them. I believe in this case, Voltaire is
talking about how it was the slave’s blood that made the rich people fat.
The slaves are property of the rich and they normally worked for the rich
until they died (blood), and by working for the rich, it makes the rich man
wealthier (fat).
22. What is Voltaire tone in this passage? How does it suggest Voltaire’s own beliefs?
a. In this passage he tried to speak with intensity, but not hatred, and talked as
though he was once a tyrant. It suggested that tyrants were in a way evil,
and by stating that, he backs up his belief against absolutism.
23. Who are some of the intolerant people Voltaire had in mind when he wrote this?
a. He was aiming at the rich, spoiled, fat people at the top of the social class
(1% of the people). Also, he was kind of aiming at even those that owned
slaves, and how those people who owned salves because rich off the salves.
27. In 1748, Montesquieu wrote, “There is no liberty, if the power of judging is not
separated from the legislative and executive powers. Were it joined with the
Legislative, the life and liberty of the subject would be exposed to arbitrary
control, for the judge would then be the legislator. Were it joined with the
executive power, the judge might behave with all the violence of the oppressor.”
How does this table relate to Montesquieu statement?
a. The table clearly divides the 3 branches apart from one another, and
Montesquieu clearly states that it would be chaos if the 3 branches were
interlocked with one another. Each branch should stick with its own
position. The only time they intertwine is when they have checks and
balances.
