Lower Back Pain in young Adults:

Lower back pain in young adults and teens is becoming a common injury seen by GPs and Osteopaths/Physical therapists, it accounts for 5-8% of athletic injuries 3. It is a common misconception that lower back pain is only seen in adults and only relates to age or arthritis. To date there is on-going research to determine the risk factors in developing lower back pain at a young age and the effect this has on developing chronic lower back pain into adulthood. Studies have shown that (1), growth spurt, tight hamstrings or quadriceps, smoking and increased levels of sport may all contribute. There is a significant difference between the causes of LBP in young people compared to adults 2). There are many causes of LBP: Disc degeneration, herniation, annular tear, facet joint wear, spondylolysis, spondylolisthesis, soft tissue damage, etc Young adults were found to have a much higher incidence of spondylolysis and spondylolisthesis (a small fracture in the vertebra, with or without slippage.) than adults 2 Early and correct diagnosis is essential when treating lower back pain as the courses of treatment vary depending on the injury. The on-going management of LBP may help reduce the incidence of carrying the injury into adulthood. Physical therapy and a good strengthening program have been proved to be essential treatment for many teens suffering from LBP. (4).
