The fifth and final event for the Bass N Bucks Sam Rayburn Spring Series is now in the books. April 27 was a calm day on the water, but proved to be a tough day to grab a big bite. One team found five big chunks to take 1st place in this finale event, winning an $8,000 payday.
Championship qualifiers from both the Bass N Bucks and the BLT Tournaments will have SIX championship opportunities! The Championship schedule is: August 24-25 September 14-15 September 29-8-29 October 12-13 October 26-27 November 2-3 T Toledo Bend Lake Waco Lake Fork Sam R Rayburn Lake Amistad Ray Roberts R
Scattered showers danced around East Texas, missing Sam Rayburn for the most part. Fairly calm wind gave way to easy traveling by boat, but did not make it any easier on the catching end. Cory Rambo and Rusty Clark christened the scales with their solid sack weighing 18.16 lbs,
and established the Big Bass race with their 6.05 lb kicker. By the time the scales closed at 4pm, those weights were bested several times. Justin and David Morton heaved their huge sack to the weigh in line, first checking for Big Bass possibilities. They weighed three separately just to make sure, all over the five pound mark. Putting all five fish together, their total weight was 26.21 lbs, and held throughout the weighin to win the tournament. Everything just went great today, and all came together for us. This is our first 1st place win, and has been a long time coming. The duo said that they just went fishing, and hit a lot of spots. We tried everything deep water, shallow water, and pretty much everything in the tackle box. Within the first 45 minutes they had a good limit in the boat, estimated around twenty pounds. We just kept moving, and everywhere we went we were catching big fish. They continued to catch and cull throughout the day. We didnt lose a single fish. You know youve had a good day when you are throwing four pounders back! Bass N Bucks presented them with the guaranteed 1st place check for $8,000. When Bryan Landers and Benjamin Craven
Justin Morton and his uncle David took 1st place by nearly a five pound margin, having a 26.21 lb sack
weighed in their limit, they temporarily took Big Bass lead with their 7.30 pounder. They were one shy of a limit, and their total weight was 21.57 lbs, winning 2nd place overall. Our trolling motor broke first thing this morning, they began. We had to position the boat and drift fish all day. They hit secondary spots with
10XD crank baits, fishing a little deeper than they had been the week before. The bass were following the shad, and we were just fortunate and blessed to lock on to a similar pattern to what we found last week. We found that they had moved 75-100 yards further out than where they were before. Their morning went fast and
Bryan Landers and Benjamin Craven won 2nd place with 21.57 lbs, anchored by a 7.30 lb kicker
3rd place was won by Brian Shook and Danny Iles with 20.19 lbs
furious, catching all the fish they weighed in by 8am. We lost two, one was at least a four pounder. With their four fish the team won 2nd place and a $4,000 check. We would like to thank the Lord for blessing us and Texas Burger for sponsoring our entry fees.

Danny Iles and Brian Shook brought in the last sack over 20 pounds, winning 3rd place with 20.19. We had a tough day. At noon we only had one keeper in the boat. Staying on wind blown sections of the lake, they threw a Strike King Carolina rig in 8-12 depths. We drug it, then drug it some more, and finally scratched out a small limit. They switched to 6th Sense crank baits, and increased their total weight culling three times. They won the last guaranteed check for their 3rd place
win for $3,000. They would like to thank 6th Sense Lures, Needmore Tackle, Power Tackle, Carlsons Marine, Jordans Marine, Costa Del Mar and Ranger boats. Jim and Jack Bryant garnered a 4th place win with their 18.61 lb limit, and Cory Rambo and Rusty Clark landed in 5th place with 18.16. Rusty was the highest finishing angler with a Foremost insurance policy through the John Salamone Agency for an additional $500 check. Chris Harvey caught the biggest bass of the day weighing in at 8.09 lbs. Fishing with his dad Rusty, they had a good day on the lake. We started our day losing the net as we were running to our first spot! This would have been a good day to have that net. They had been catching several fish throughout the day, and swinging them in the boat. At 1:30, they had made their way to a grassy drain fishing a baby brush hog about 8 deep. Thats when Chris got the big bite. Once I set the hook, she jumped out of the water. Her gills were flared and she looked like a 10 pounder! Rusty said at that point there were a lot of Oh Jesus, Oh Lord! as they knew this one would not be swinging into the boat and they had no net. Through all of the excitement, the skilled duo
Chris Harvey caught the biggest fish of the day weighing in at 8.09 lbs, with help from his dad Rusty to get it in the boat got the big sow in the boat, winning Big Bass and then 6th place overall. Now that the points for all five events of the Sam Rayburn Series have been calculated, Cory Rambo and Rusty Clark have officially won the Anglers of the Year title. Along with the prestigious title, their entry fees for the 2014 Bass N Bucks Sam Rayburn Spring Series will be waived. Toledo Bend Summer Series, all at Big Bass Marina: June 23, July 28 & August 11. Sam Rayburn surprised everyone, being stingy with her coveted bass April 28 for the BLT anglers weighing in at the Umphrey Family Pavilion. Danny Cross and Steven Dillard were happily surprised to win with their 17.71 lb limit. Rain showers had moved through the area overnight, with more in the forecast for the coming week. The low pressure did not help with the bite though.

Danny Cross and Steven Dillard started their day on a bald clay point fishing shallow water, on top with a spook. We caught a small limit, then later switched to a Carolina rig and culled three of them. Finding keepers was proving to be a daunting task, finding kickers was even harder. We hit a lot of spots, and culled a lot of water. Later in the day we started fishing ledges with a crank bait and caught our biggest (5.67 lbs). That was our last cull of the day. Their five fish limit totaled 17.71, taking 1st place in the
tournament, receiving $1,324 for their win. They also won Big Bass with their kicker fish garnishing an additional $280 check. Kevin and Brent Walker chose to start out in deep water, and managed a limit by 8am. About mid day we moved up to shallow water using a crank bait and Carolina rigs in drains along the grass line. They hit over a dozen different areas, and found only two of them holding fish. Culling by mere ounces for the most part their final weight was 16.62 lbs winning a 2nd place finish and $800. The team would like to thank Legend boats, Mercury, Lowrance, Reaction Innovations, 6th Sense Lures, Power Pole, And the Good Lord for looking after us. 3rd place winners Michael Doggett and Greg McDonald started their day right. We fished shallow grass with custom painted wake baits. They got bit on all of their first five casts. We put a quick limit together, but they were all small fish. Through the day they continued to back out incrementally to deeper water and culled several times. We had the numbers, just couldnt get the size! The biggest fish in their bag weighed in at 4.89 lbs, and had a total weight of 16.10 lbs. BLT awarded the team $580 for their 3rd place finish. The team would like to thank Hoyt and Outtech Industries. Rounding out the top five were Lou Caycedo & Billy Smith in 4th place with 14.41 lbs and Brig Luce & Randy Turner in 5th with 13.36 lbs. With four out of five tournaments in the BLT Jasper Division now in the books, the Angler of the Year race is stacked. The final Jasper Division BLT 2013 event will be held June 2 at Twin Dikes. Q: Is there a diff difference between a funnel cloud and a tornado? A: Its all in the timing, says Brent McRoberts of Texas A&M University. A funnel cloud is a powerful twisting mass of air stretching down from a thunderstorm, but it has not yet touched the ground. Once it makes contact with the ground, its then officially called a tornado, McRoberts explains. That means that a funnel cloud has become a tornado. A funnel cloud doesnt do much damage up in the air, but once it makes contact with the ground, thats when trouble
starts. If a funnel cloud is spotted, it should be treated like it is a tornado because the situation can change quickly and become a life-threatening event. Q: Once it does touch the ground, how fast can it travel? A: Most tornadoes travel f fairly slowly, at about 20 miles per hour or so, McRoberts says. But some have been clocked at 60 to 70 miles per hour. You have to realize that the winds inside the tornado are much faster than the rate at which the storm moves on the ground. Winds inside a tornado can reach 300 miles per hour, which is why they cause so much
destruction and death. In any year, there are about 100,000 thunderstorms in the United States, and these produce about 1,000 tornadoes every year. Some travel just a few hundred feet, while others have been known to travel more than 100 miles on the ground. Studies show that the average tornado will travel a little over 3 miles on the ground. The popularity of bass fishing has exploded during the last 20 years. During this time many changes have taken place, including increases in fishing technology and the advent of more restrictive harvest regulations. However, one of the most important changes includes increased angler acceptance of catch and release practices. There is no doubt that the popularity of catch and release has helped sustain and enhance bass fisheries throughout Texas. Currently, almost all bass tournaments require release of all live fish weighed in and penalize those with dead bass. In addition, conservation of the resource should be a major consideration of all tournament anglers. Therefore, tournament anglers should do everything possible to ensure survival of released fish. By following the guidelines below, anglers can minimize stress on bass while held in livewells. All fish care recommendations are based on water temperature, oxygen, ammonia levels, and proper handling of fish. Stress in the livewell occurs as a result of low oxygen levels and ammonia buildup from fish waste. As water temperatures increase, water holds less oxygen, bass consume more oxygen, and ammonia becomes more toxic. This implies that as the
water temperatures increase, fish in a livewell require more attention and care in order to reduce stress. When water temperatures are below 75 degrees and less than 10 pounds of bass are in the livewell, at a minimum anglers should run either the recirculating (aerating) pump or intake pump at timed intervals. These timers should be set to run as often as possible. By recirculating water, uniodized salt can be added to livewell water (1/3 cup per 5 gallons of water) to match the body fluid salt concentration of bass (0.5%). Fish experiencing stress absorb excess water while in the livewell, diluting body fluids below levels necessary for survival. Maintaining the salinity of livewell water to that of fish body fluids minimizes effects of stress. Uniodized salt is cheap and can be purchased in bulk (30+ pound bags) at your local feed store under the name Stock Salt. Pre-measured amounts of salt can be carried in ziplock bags. Many commercial water conditioners (i.e., catch and release formulas) cannot be recommended by state agencies, not due to ineffectiveness, but because the ingredients have not been tested by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as safe for human consumption. If water is recirculated, replace half of the livewell water every 3 hours to prevent toxic ammonia build up that results from fish waste. When water is replaced, additional salt needs to be added. Pumping fresh water in on a timer with intake pumps prevents toxic ammonia buildup but prevents use of salt additives. When there are more than 10 pounds of bass in the livewell, anglers must run either recirculating or intake pumps continuously to ensure optimal livewell conditions. Adequate, fully charged boat batteries should have no problem providing continuous, all-day power to the pumps. When water temperatures are above 75 degrees, anglers must run their recirculating pumps continuously, even if there is only one bass in the livewell. As discussed above, uniodized salt must be added to keep fish in the best shape possible. For boats equipped only with timer-operated pumps, the switches should be replaced to allow the pumps to operate in
continuous mode. Again, at these temperatures, running pumps on a timer does not maintain adequate oxygen levels in livewells. At these warmer temperatures, cooling the livewell water with ice is very important and allows it to hold more oxygen and reduces oxygen consumption by bass. Enough ice needs to be added to reduce the livewell temperature 5-10 degrees below reservoir surface temperature. However, excessive cooling beyond 10 degrees can cause heat shock and death when bass are released back into the lake. Block ice is preferred (it lasts longer) and can be made by freezing water in half-gallon milk jugs or 12-ounce water bottles. Again, when using recirculating pumps half the livewell water needs to be exchanged every 3 hours to prevent ammonia buildup. When water is exchanged, additional ice and salt need to be added. As a rule, 8 pounds of ice will cool the typical livewell 5-10 degrees for 3 hours. A frozen, half-gallon milk jug will weigh 4 pounds. During a typical tournament day (8-9 hours), 8 pounds of ice added every 3 hours when water is exchanged should maintain a cooler livewell temperature. Thermometers are a must to insure water is not cooled more than 10 degrees. Thermometers used to measure vehicle air conditioning work well and can be purchased at auto stores. Most of the electronic GPS/sonar units can support additional temperature sensors that can be permanently mounted in livewells. Here, ability to plot both livewell temperatures and the lake surface temperature on the GPS/sonar screen allows for continuous monitoring and adjustment of livewell temperatures. To maintain livewell-held bass in the best possible shape, pure oxygen-injection systems (oxygen bottle, regulator, and fine-pore air diffuser) can be installed for under $300. By far, lack of oxygen is the primary reason fish die in livewells. During the most extreme conditions (i.e., 15 + pounds of bass in a livewell over 85 degrees), these systems are the only way to maintain optimum oxygen levels. I have this system installed in my boat, and would be happy to display and discuss this equipment with anyone that is interested. A TPWD presentation
on these oxygen systems can be found at the web link at the end of the article. Fish hooked in the gills or stomach may die even with appropriate care due to excess bleeding. Dead fish will cause poor water quality conditions in the livewell and should be removed immediately and placed on ice. However, as required by state game laws, dead fish must be retained as part of your daily limit. It is illegal to cull dead fish. The weigh-in is an additional stress factor. Probably the most important thing anglers can do during this time is to not carry bass in dry bags from the boat to the holding tanks. As simple as this sounds, it is surprising how many anglers do not take the time to get enough water in the bags to prevent stress during the time the fish are put into the bag until they reach the life-support tanks or scales. Fill your weigh-in bag with at least 4 gallons of water from your livewell, especially if you have been using ice to cool the livewell water. Holding tanks at the weigh-in line should be aerated, cooled with ice, and treated with salt. Effort should be taken while in the line to exchange the original water in the bag with the aerated, treated water in the tanks and to keep your bag submerged in the holding tanks. Many tournaments now have multiple air stones in each holding tank for placement inside your weigh-in bag. Oxygenating your water in the weigh-in bag while in line is absolutely critical, as oxygen in the weigh-in bag can drop to zero in just a couple of minutes! If fish are held for pictures, wet hands before touching fish. Grasp fish by lower jaw but never bend the head down or hold horizontally by jaw. Avoid touching the body of the fish as this removes the protective mucous covering. When holding bigger fish, the lower body should also be supported with a wet hand under the belly to prevent jaw damage. Do not keep fish out of water any longer than you can hold your breath. Air exposure is extremely stressful to fish. Livewell oxygen-injection system explained: http://www.slideshare.net/raminlandfish/ livewell-oxygen-injection-8773301

It is the time of the year when people are spending more time outdoors enjoying all that nature has to offer. The many good things that people enjoy can be spoiled by several bad things such as sun burn, poisonous plants, or insects. There are only a couple of ways to fight the first two things, but there are many methods to control insects. Many of them focus on chemicals for either preventing them from biting or killing them outright. The methods of chemical control are very numerous and readily available, but other methods that are less harmful and often cheaper arent as well known. Knowing about these other methods can help as they may not be as harsh (to the environment or people) and can be cheaper. Organic pesticides are becoming more common and cheaper in many stores. These
products are supposed to be easier on the environment than chemical pesticides. They can be used in similar fashion to the nonorganic products. Many products that can help with insect control can have other uses such as diatomaceous earth, egg shells, and hot red pepper sprays/powders to name a few. These can often be placed or sprayed around areas to create a barrier that insects will not cross. With any pesticide always follow all instructions on the product label. Bats and birds that eat insects can be attracted through the creation of suitable habitat (some insects can be scared away with just the sounds of these animals). Bat and nest boxes can be placed throughout the area hopefully attracting animals to help with the insect problem (plans or boxes can be found on
the internet). An example of the impact animals can have is the bat colony at Bracken Cave (near Austin). This colony has around 20 million Mexican-free tailed bats living there and each night they will eat 250 million tons of insects. On a more local scale a modest colony of 150 big brown bats can eat 33 million cucumber beetles. Placing water in easy to access areas can help recruit animals to the area. All water should be kept clean and filled. For birds water should be placed where predators cant attack the birds when they come for water. Bats need open area around water (bats drink while flying and dont stop to drink). The habitat in which the insects live can be modified to reduce their numbers. These can often be simple things. Keeping the area around a house mowed and manicured can
help reduce some populations of insects such as ticks and chiggers. Draining standing water can reduce the area favorable for some insects to breed. Watering correctly can prevent plants from becoming stressed and more susceptible to insect infestations. By not killing all insects a more stable environment can be created in which predator and prey relationships can keep population levels under control. Insects can be controlled using organic pesticides, animals, and the habitat around them. A few techniques were pointed out in this article, but it should be a starting point for control that doesnt just have to include bug repellent and chemical spray. A small change in the way things are managed can have a large impact on comfort.

The fourth Oilmans tournament held on Toledo Bend Lake April 26th and 27th was a very successful event in many ways. The weather was cool and windy on Friday which hampered the fisherman in getting to their favorites fishing areas, but Saturday turned out to be a beautiful day with cloud cover and very little wind. The Oilmans tournament President Chester Huval announced that this year the wounded warrior project based in Florida would be the recipient of the donation funds from the tournament. The wounded warriors were represented by Barry Guidry who is a paraplegic but was still able to fish the tournament with his father Nolan. Barry opened the awards ceremony with a prayer which was followed by the national anthem. He thanked all the anglers and the Oilmans association for the support which is being shown them by the many monetary donations. President Huval presented Guidry with a check for $10,000 as a donation to the wounded warriors. As the evening went on numerous anglers turned over all or part of their winnings as a donation to them also. The tournament director Mike Roper called for all anglers who had fished and were a veteran to gather in front of the stage and
be recognized. The applause for the veterans was tremendous. Mike then announced that he had a gift of a new fishing rod for each of them. Huval thanked the veterans for their sacrifices and asked everyone to remember not only the veterans but the families of veterans killed in action also. The awards were presented for day 1 with CJ Guidry and Raymond Hall taking first place with 23.08lbs., Scott Brooks and Aaron Dronett in second with 21.68lbs., and Charlie and Jimmy Hickman taking third with a 20.05lb stringer. Big Bass was caught by Mike Ligon and weighed in at 7.26lbs. Day 2 saw a change in the leaderboard with Richard and Ronnie Madole bringing in a 22.67lb limit to put them in first place. This was followed very closely by Brad and William Hillebrand with a catch of 22.18lbs to put them in second place for the day. The team of Mike and Pat Settle moved into third place with a catch weighing 21.25lbs. Big bass of the day weighed 9.14lbs and was caught by Ronnie Madole. The Madole brothers combined weight of 40.60lbs earned them the top spot in the tournament followed by CJ Guidry and Raymond Hall with 36.99 for second overall, and third overall went to Jon Kizzee and Dan
Stahl with a two day total of 36.56lbs. Many anglers reported catching their fish with Carolina rigs and baby brush hogs on main lake points. The larger fish were caught in areas with little or no grass as well as
Barry Guidry (center) participated in the tournament with his dad, but that wasnt his only purpose for being at the tournament. As a representative for the Wounded Warrior Project, he happily accepted a $10,000 donation from the Toledo Bend Oilmen that will be sent to the headquarters of the organization in Florida. humps. Both Ricky and Ronnie Madole want to thank their wives for supporting them in their fishing.
Ronnie Madole caught the Big Bass on Day 2 weighing in at 9.14 lbs, anchoring the win for he and his brother/ partner Richard
Drawings were held for the numerous door prizes donated by the sponsors. Amongst them were two Talon shallow water anchors with free installation, rods, reels, rod and reel combos and checks for $400 and $500 and a trolling motor. The angler had to be present to win. A tournament this size takes a lot of work on the part of a many helpers. The Oilmans association thanked the Converse Lady Cats Cheerleaders for being their runners at the weigh in and a donation of $250 was made to the schools. Royal services and rental from Broussard, La., along with Professional pumping services from Carencro, La.,
brewed up a huge pot of Jambalaya on Saturday much to the delight of everyone there. The crew also fed the anglers and staff an great meal on Friday evening. The live release boat is locally owned and operated and is critical in maintaining healthy fish. Ronnie and his crew do a great job at the tournaments. Mike introduced the staff and reiterated that without them and the supporting sponsors the tournament would not happen.
CJ Guidry and Raymond Hall led the tournament on day one, ultimately winning 2nd place with 36.99 lbs
The Madole brothers combined weight of 40.60lbs earned them the top spot in the tournament

Newberry Wins Walmart Bass Fishing League Cowboy Division On Toledo Bend
Courtesy of FLWOutdoors.com
ZWOLLE, La. (May 13, 2013) Dicky Newberry of Houston, Texas, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 19 pounds even Saturday to win the Walmart Bass Fishing League Cowboy Division event on Toledo Bend Reservoir. For his victory, Newberry earned $6,632. I fished on the south end of the lake, said Newberry. I decided that I really wanted to concentrate on the grass and hydrilla near Housen Bay. Newberry fished the edges of the grass, keying on secondary points. He said that the majority of his fish came from a Strike King Lures chartreuse shad-colored 6XD crankbait, but he did catch a few throwing a swimbait. Once I started to concentrate on the secondary points I really keyed in on the pattern, Newberry said. Then, I started covering a lot of water in my Ranger boat that people hadnt already fished. That was the difference maker for me. Newberry estimated that he caught 20 fish throughout the day, with 10 of them weighing more than three pounds. Most of my weight came before 9 a.m., Newberry said. I was able to cull a few times, though. It was a fun day. Complete results can be found at FLWOutdoors.com <http:// www.flwoutdoors.com/bassfishing/bfl/tournament/2013/6988/ toledo-bend-boater-results/> . Phil Caldwell of Webster, Texas, weighed a five-bass limit totaling 15 pounds, 3 ounces Saturday to win $1,816 in the coangler division. The final BFL Cowboy Division tournament is scheduled for Sept. 14-15 on Sam Rayburn Reservoir in Jasper, Texas. After that last divisional tournament is complete, the top 40 boaters and 40 co-anglers based on point standings will qualify for the Oct.

The lake is in great shape with water up in the buck brush and lots of weeds that went under water when the lake filled back up. There are some willow trees out on the points in 6 to 8 ft. of water. The pencil grass and pepper grass is everywhere and things look awesome for the top water bite. But to say things Lynn Atkinson have been different is to say the least. cell 979-220-0251 The cold fronts have just kept coming Reel Um N Guide and coming keeping things stirred up. Service, The hydrilla has been holding fish, www.rayburncountry.com when you can find it. The top water bite should have kicked off. That can be a lot of fun; early morning and late afternoon; throwing baits like the Stanley Ribbit frogs over the grass and lily pads. It takes some skill to let the fish have the bait till you feel some weight on the line before you set the hook. It will sure get the old heart pumping when you get into a mess of them and wait for one to blow up on the bait! Another couple of old baits are the Buzzbait, Zara Spook and the Pop-R these can really get some action. When the morning bite slows down it is time to move out and start working the deeper edges of the grass and structure. A few baits that come to mind are the Carolina Rig, Texas Rig and Stanley Jig. These baits are great to work the edges and structure. As the grass grows and if it starts to matt over the grass jig comes into play. Punching a heavy Stanley grass jig thru it can be a lot of work but when you get a bite it is usually a pretty good fish. There are not going to be a lot of bites doing this so dont miss any of them. This is what to look for as the summer heats up. The crappie fishing has started to stabilize into the summer pattern over structure and we been catching a lot of good fish from the pontoon. These little critters are some of the best eating that I can think of. Grabbing a group of friends and getting out on the water can be so much fun for everyone young or old. For the ones that dont have a boat we can help you out. Weve got a 20 foot Pontoon boat that can handle up to 8 anglers and can put you on some fine crappie. Those that need shade, weve got that, a fan and a changing room with potty. No more pressure. Its a great way to get away from stress and have tons of fun. Take mom and pop or the kids fishing today. Ill try my best to spoil you!!

Johnny George, fishing solo because Jolyne was visiting family this weekend also had 12.00 pounds. Ronnie & Courtney Mundy came in third with 11.64 lbs. contention to win. Congratulations on a 1st Place win! Also finishing in 1st Place was Johnny George, fishing solo because Jolyne was visiting family this weekend. Johnny also brought in 12.00 pounds, hence the tie! He knew fishing a tournament without your best partner was going to be tough plus, under the circumstances of active small fish, catching the quality fish he needed to win overall just didnt materialize. As the 2005 C.A.S.T. Classic Champions on Sam Rayburn, Johnny knows the lake well and had the right plan for making the most of what it offered. Congratulations Johnny on a good day and a nice win! Ronnie & Courtney Mundy are also former C.A.S.T. Classic Champions on Sam Rayburn in 2007. Today their stringer of five bass weighing 11.64 pounds and a quality fish weighing 3.54 pounds captured 3rd Place overall. What was evident was the small fish day everyone endured. Ronnie & Courtney have a favorite area on Sam Rayburn and knowing it well has served them well over the years. Ronnies experience in a semi-pro tournaments on Sam Rayburn also has also provided valuable experience he and Courtney use to win regularly. Good Job! Once again the stage is set for a great finish to the year with
Neil & Becky Herline came in 1st with their limit of bass that weighed 12.00 lbs.
C.A.S.T. Southeast Regions couples came to Sam Rayburn on Saturday, May 18, 2013 expecting to catch some big stringers of bass. The weather had been fairly stable, the lake was only 1.93 feet below normal pool, and the grass was growing at just the right depth. What more could you want for a tournament? Of course its, bass!!! The fish were not following the same level of expectations as the anglers. While there were a lot of fish caught real quality was the challenge. Several five fish stringers were less than 10 pounds. The largest bass weighed was less than five pounds. It was definitely a day for catching small fish and not many limits. Days like this keep weights close. Neil & Becky Herline were skilled enough and made the right decisions to catch a limit of bass weighing 12.00 pounds! Fishing the north end of the lake just south of the Hwy. 147 bridge put Neil & Becky in familiar territory. Not only were they able to pick up a limit they also brought in the Big Bass for the tournament, a nice fish weighing 4.79 pounds. Neil & Becky have been fishing C.A.S.T. for many years. Neil also fishes the FLW Everstart Series as an amateur co-angler and has over $12,000.00 in career earnings. As a C.A.S.T. couple they are superior anglers and always in
a tournament designed to be highly competitive and close at the finish. The final tournament of 2013 for the men and women of C.A.S.T. Southeast will be on Lake Nacogdoches. Registration for the tournament will begin at 5:00 am with first cast starting at 6:00 am. So be early, fish hard, and come to weigh-in hungry! Hungry, because making the final event special, the couples of the Southeast Region will have their annual cookout with hamburgers and hotdogs along with a few special side dishes brought from each couples personal recipes! Sounds good already! C.A.S.T. Southeast would like to thank the sponsors who have supported our region and organization this year: Skeeter Boats, Yamaha Outboards, Strike King Lures, Kistler Custom Rods, Biobor Fuel Additives, Pro Rule Measuring Boards, Stowaway Marina, Save Phace, Santone Lures, E2 Baits, Power Team Lures, and Monarch Trophy & Awards. Each of these fine businesses are the first choice of C.A.S.T. and the Southeast Region for all our fishing and boating needs. Outdoor Tales
Q: Why does the wind seem to die down at night? A: The simple and quick answer is that theres no sun, says Brent McRoberts of Texas A&M University.Wind is a form of energy and it gets much of its strength from the sun, he explains. You can think of wind as a huge river of air over land, and it does this day or night. But as the sun rises and starts heating up the ground, rising warm air mixes with slower air near the ground and with air moving faster that is above ground. This faster-moving air is pushing downward, and it creates windy and breezy conditions as the day progresses. Q: So what happens at night? When the sun starts to set, this A: mixing of conditions doesnt happen as much, so the winds start to slow and eventually die down.Remember that hot or warmer air expands and rises, McRoberts adds.At night, the ground begins to cool. Air closer to the ground cools by radiation, so there is a lack of heat and energy and these directly affect air currents. So the winds at night and in the early morning hours are usually the weakest. But remember that cold fronts and storms can occur and these directly affect wind speed, too.

Jasper Master Gardeners will participate in a multistate campaign that challenges people to conserve 40 gallons of water per day, and its something everyone can try just to see if they are up for it. The University of Georgia Extension Service developed this program and Texas A&M AgriLife took up the challenge (well, we were in the middle of the worst drought since the Dust Bowl). They are trying out the program in several major urban areas, but Jasper is the only rural area asked to join the experiment. What is the old saying? Fools rush in, where angels fear to tread. We looked at each other and asked the simple question: Why should East Texans participate in such a challenge? Even with our amazing average annual rain fall of 56 inches in Jasper, we know what happens to lake levels when rain fails to fall. First, let me say water is a very interesting substance. It is a universal solvent. It exists in three states: solid, liquid, and gas. Water makes up almost two-thirds of the human body, and 70 percent of the brain. Trees are 75 percent water. The list continues, but you get the gist.
Second, although water is found almost everywhere on earth, we cant always drink it. Most is salty ocean water or polar ice. In fact, only about 1/4 of one percent is potential drinking water. Third, we like to attract the opposite sex so we take baths and wash clothes. It is my opinion that a long hot shower after a grueling day is the most underrated experience in our modern age. My grandmother had to haul water to wash the familys clothes -- four adults, five children, and three babies, no Pampers. I bet she knew how to conserve water. Statistics vary, but on average Americans use 183 gallons of water a day for cooking, cleaning, washing, flushing, and watering, turning on the tap 70 - 100 times a day. Saving only about 20 percent of that, 40 gallons a day, adds up more than 14,000 gallons a year. What is the 40 Gallon Challenge? A voluntary pledge to adopt water-saving practices by making simple changes, such as only washing full loads of laundry or reducing the number of loads of laundry per week.
My original comment was one less load of laundry? twist my arm! All joking aside, it is a matter of breaking a few bad habits. Turn off water while brushing your teeth; fill the tub half full; reduce your shower by two minutes. I can imagine little boys who might be willing to give up a bath all together for such a good cause. I took the hints and made a honey-do list for my hubby, such as replacing that old dishwasher with a new water-saving upgrade. Funny, dishwasher was not actually on the suggestion list Dont you love how we ad-lib? Purchase a more efficient clothes washer really is on the list. And who knows, a new handy-dandy clothes washer could follow me home. Isnt this fun?! Since most of us are in a state of perpetual remodeling anyway who knows, replace old toilet with new low-flush toilet or low flow shower-head could be next. There are equally wonderful water saving ideas for the garden as well. For example, make a compost pile instead of using the garbage disposal. For the fix-it person, repair at least
one pipe leak , broken sprinkler head or leaking hose bib. Hate weed-eating? Add mulch (2 -3 inches) to retain water as well as reduce weeding. Do you know how often to water and how much? Once a week, one inch. How can you tell? Use empty tuna cans or cat food cans. Put a few near the sprinklers and see how long it takes to fill them. Thats how long to water, and do it in the wee hours of the morning, never after 10 am. This cuts down on evaporation, reduces plant diseases like brown patch, and makes roots grow deep and strong. Adjust sprinklers to reduce overspray onto driveway and the road. If you want to try the 40 Gallon Challenge for yourself, take the pledge at http://www.40gallonchallenge.org. Pay attention --THIS is important: only select items that you dont already do now! If you are a water-economical person already, hip-hip-hooray! Choose things you havent tried to see before to see how much more you can save. To compare, get a copy of your water bills for the previous yearyour utility company will be happy to help you. Then, report your efforts. We are only interested in how much water you use (not what you paid). If you are a well-water person, this is a little trickier but there are websites that can help you to estimate your water use. 1000 gallons per month may sound like a lot, but any water savings, no matter how small, is a bonus. This is my suggestion: keep a water diary for a month. It will give you an idea of how much water your household actually uses and how much you could potentially save. Then try a few suggestions and see how it works out. If interested in this program, please contact us at the Jasper Extension Office at (409) 384-3721.

Wesley Thomas wins 27th Annual Big Bass Splash on Toledo Bend with a 9.62 lbr
By Patty Lenderman Photos of this event are available at www.TheLakecaster.com
Wesley Thomas won the 27th annual Big Bass Splash on Toledo Bend with his 9.62 lb day one catch. (L-R) Wesleys wife stands by him as he is crowned Champion, followed by 2nd place winner Bill Ligon (9.48 lbs), 3rd place Derek Mong (9.36 lbs), 4th place Nick Simon (9.23 lbs) and 5th place Cole Moore (8.36 lbs)
Wesley Thomas of Converse, LA brought in the biggest bass of the tournament on day one weighing 9.62 lbs. to weigh in and the scales locked in at 3.00 lbs. The very next hour Hayden Jones weighed in her 4.00 exact weight bass as her dad proudly watched. She was fishing in the Little Angler Division so at that time the exact 4 pound $5000 payout was still available. This was a relief to Aaron Pousson, who also weighed in a 4.00 exact weight bass shortly after, winning $5,000 bonus for his fish! Day three showed it was not quite so easy to hit these marks, and only one was
May 17-18-19, 2013 @ Cypress Bend Park The new champion has been crowned at 27th Annual Big Bass Splash on Toledo Bend, presented by Sealy Outdoors and B.A.S.S. Wesley Thomas of Converse, La. caught his 9.62 pounder on day one and it held on to win as biggest bass of the tournament. It was the longest 48 hours of his life! We havent gotten any sleep in two days, his wife admitted when his title was secured. A total of $440,000 was paid out in cash and prizes over the course of this three day
hourly event, and the anglers who brought in the five biggest bass overall received additional cash and prizes. All three days anglers enjoyed cool mornings in the 60s, rising to the upper 80s by tournament closing time at 2pm. The wind was out of the southwest, challenging anglers and their trolling motors who were trying to hit areas along the main lake. Each day a $5,000 bounty is offered to the first anglers bringing in Derek Mong called it his lucky day when he caught this 9.36 lb beauty that won 3rd place overall
the first 3.00 and 4.00 lb bass. On day one, Victor Jones of Lake Charles, LA won the first $5,000 check during the first hour of the tournament with his 4.00 lb catch. Many anglers continued to gun for the 3.00 exact, often missing the mark by 1/100th of a pound. Rockie Ramshur of Winfield, LA hit it on the nose, garnering the last $5,000 bonus check of day one. No time was wasted on day two garnering the coveted bonuses for exact weight bass. Jeff Wallace of West Monroe, LA was the third angler

As has become an annual tradition at the Big Bass Splash on Toledo Bend, Bob shares the stage with the Toledo Bend Lake Association who, among many other things they do to enhance, protect and further develop the lake and angling opportunities, also take care of the Lunker Program on Toledo. The program offers anglers a free replica to any bass they catch and bring in live over 10 pounds. It is a year round program, and this year all new records were set with the number of lunkers caught and replicas given away. All total, 58 replicas were awarded. Dinah Medine is in charge of the record keeping for the program, and Scotties Taxidermy creates the beautiful mounts for the recipients. Ten of the bass caught this season additionally made the top 100 list for biggest bass ever caught on Toledo Bend, a record kept by the Sabine Parish Tourism and awarded to the anglers by Linda Curtis Sparks. That is a real testament to the success of the program when they are put back out into the lake and are caught yet again by another lucky angler. Interestingly, the lunker caught by Todd Castledine was one previously tagged. It had been caught the year before by Stephen Johnston. This year the bass weighed two pounds more than it did the year before. How big will it be when the next lucky angler catches it? We are aware of many more that have been caught on Toledo, Linda Curtis Sparks of Sabine Parish Tourism added. Many people who fish Toledo Bend and catch these prize bass often

Windy Day For The Dr. Bill Shelton Memorial Fishing Tournment On Sam Rayburn May 4, 2013
By Paul Hayes Photos of this event are available at www.TheLakecaster.com
They call the wind Mariah. Just like in the movie Paint Your Wagons, Mariah blew all day and blew cold. Many of the anglers said they had to try to alternate spots because the wind was just too strong to hold on their selected points. From the 101 boats entered in the tournament only 45 teams weighed in with the largest sack tipping the scales at 23.95 lbs and the smallest at 1.5 lbs. There were twenty eight limits brought in amassing a total weight of 468Lbs and no penalties were given for dead fish. The first benefit tournament was started by Dr. Shelton, a Radiation Oncologist at Memorial Hospital in Lufkin. According to Tournament Director Lindsey Mott the tournament was started by the Doctor because one day one of his patients told him that he had walked the roads picking up cans to get enough money to buy gas for the trip to see him. Being an avid sportsman himself, Dr. Shelton decided to hold a fundraiser fishing tournament to assist his patients who could not afford gas money and other expenses to come to an appointment in Lufkin. This was in 1993 and a benefit has been held every year since then. It has since been renamed to The Dr. Bill Shelton Fishing Adventure and is held out of CassellsBoykin Park on Lake Sam Rayburn. The benefit is
set up on a slope at the park downhill from a monument dedicated to the Doctor. According to his daughter Rebecca Chance he passed away in October 2006 and her Mother followed in 2009. ATHENS, Ala. Kris L. Wilson found a shad spawn that led to victory in the Toyota Bassmaster Weekend Series, operated by American Bass Anglers, South East Texas Division 10 tournament, held May 11, 2013, on Lake Sam Rayburn. Running out of Umphrey Pavilion near Jasper, Texas, to fish the 114,500-acre lake, the 35-yearold angler from Montgomery, Texas, caught five bass weighing 18.35 pounds with a 5.79-pound kicker. For the Boater Division victory, Wilson took home a check for $2,648. I found a shad spawn early, Wilson explained. That was pretty exciting. I caught a limit early, but no big fish. At the shad spawn, I caught fish on a Strike King 5XD crankbait in chartreuse perch and a Norman NXS in Nutter Shad. After catching about 25 fish on crankbaits, I picked up a Carolina rig with a green pumpkin senko and caught some more. I caught about 30 keepers. In second for the boaters, Todd Driscoll, a 41-year-old state biologist from Jasper, Texas, landed a five-bass tournament limit going 17.82 pounds. He pocketed $1,324 for the effort. I caught my three biggest fish from one spot I found in practice, Driscoll said. In our first spot, I fished a shad spawn on the north end of the lake and caught about 20 keepers, but not any big fish. I caught a lot of fish there on a spinnerbait. After that, we bounced around the lake fishing deep and shallow. In deep water, I caught my fish on a Reaction Innovations Big Unit Worm in hot tamale color. We probably caught about 35 fish total. W. T. Wright, 29, of Bossier City, La., finished third among the boaters with a five-bass limit going 16.19 pounds. He anchored his bag with a 5.53-pounder to collect a check for $863. We fished grass beds with a Carolina rig tipped with a 4-inch Gene Larew Hoodaddy,
Wright said. We moved to the outside edge of the grass in about 13 feet of water and started throwing crankbaits. We caught fish early and had a limit by 9:30 a.m. After that, the fish got deeper in the grass. I caught about 15 fish and culled three times. Defending BWS champion Albert Collins of Nacogdoches, Texas, placed fourth with five bass going 15.23 pounds. In fifth place, Patrick Shane Gammill of Huntington, Texas, brought in five keepers for 15.01 pounds with a 3.11-pound kicker. Ben Craven of Colmesneil, Texas, set the tournament big bass standard with a 6.28-pounder. In the Co-Angler Division, Sammy L. Strong, 68, of Orange, Texas, showed the younger guys how to do it. He returned to the marina with three keepers for 8.63 pounds and put $1,302 in his pocket. We mainly fished river bends where points came down, Strong said. I was Carolina rigging with a 10-inch Ol Monster worm in plum on Seaguar line. I caught about 10 fish, but only four keepers. I culled once. Taking second for the co-anglers, Charles Shofner Jr. of Jasper, Texas, brought in a threebass division limit for 8.54 pounds. In third for the co-anglers, Don Jeane of Hardin, Texas, landed three keepers going 8.30 pounds with a 4.47-pound kicker. Duane W. Hill of Port Arthur, Texas, placed fourth with two bass at 7.88 pounds, but one weighed 6.26 pounds to take the division lunker title. Duane L. McDaniel of Crosby, Texas, rounded out the top five co-anglers with three bass and 7.65 pounds including a 2.91-pounder. Crappie For Cash Tournament Held On Toledo Bend May 11, 2013
By Paul Hayes Photos from this event are available at www.TheLakecaster.com
The seventh annual Crappie for Cash tournament was held on Toledo Bend lake Saturday May 11, 2013 with 38 teams entering. Teams were allowed to weigh in seven crappie, with their largest being weighed for big fish prizes. The fish were all being donated to the Zwolle First Baptist Church for a fish fry to be held for local senior citizens. At the pre-fish meeting held on Friday night door prizes worth $1000 were given away. The prizes were furnished by Toledo Town and Tackle at a greatly discounted price. The Sabine River Authority of Louisiana was instrumental in providing weigh in facilities at Cypress Bend Park along with a cooler of cold drinks and a crew to assist in the weigh in. They also helped clean the fish before they were taken to Zwolle. Although the turnout seems small Mike Carr said the number of entries has grown every year. He is expecting an even larger event with more sponsors and more prize money next year. A large number of tagged Crappie were released into the lake for the Crappie rodeo but none were caught during this tournament. He reminded everyone that it only costs $10 to enter and there are some very nice prizes being given away to any lucky angler who catches a tagged fish. Tickets may be purchased at Toledo Town and Tackle and on line at crappierodeo.com.
One thing all of the anglers found was that fishing was tough Saturday and the bigger fish were hard to find but the Father and Son team of Derek and Nicholas Hirsch from San Augustine, Texas were able to find some good fish around Martinez creek fishing brush tops. The most popular color for them was a chartreuse jig. According to Derek the fish bit slow but steady until the wind picked up and the fish turned off, but by then they had their kicker fish of 1.76 lbs which helped them win the tournament with a total weight of 9.80 lbs. Second place winners were Steve Matte and Eddie Roy who held the lead with 8.93 lbs until the Hirschs weighed in a few minutes before the close of the tournament. Their fish also came from deep brush piles fished with different colored jigs. The bite was tough and it took several hours to get a good limit. Third place went to Chris Coco and Rand Kerry with a nice limit of 8.82 lbs. They fished brush tops with minnows and jigs mainly black and blue. Their most productive jigs are the curly tail jigs from Toledo Town and Tackle in Many. According to Chris the bite was good until the wind picked up from the North and the fish got closed mouth. The team is from Alexandria, La. Big fish honors were as follows: 1st: Steve Matte and Eddie R Roy with a 2.13 lb crappie and is only the

Jackson Hill Marina Hosts Patriots Challenge To Honor And Support Miltary Service And Sacrifice
By Terry Sympson, Jackson Hill Marina
We are celebrating the winners of two Patriots Challenge tournaments. Taylor Thompson and Cade Tullos took top honors on April 27th with a 16.65 lb limit and Don Taylor and Don Randall put together a 17 lb sack of fish to win the Patriots Challenge on May 18th. Conditions had not changed too much over the last month with windy conditions and warming water temps scattering post spawn fish from 2 ft to 22 ft of water. It appears that the best fishing action is coming off both main and secondary points in 5 to 10 ft of water on the outside edges of grass lines. Carolina and Texas rigged plastics were used to catch the majority of keeper fish with Randall and Taylor reporting watermelon red lizards as their primary bait of choice in 5 ft of water. While some anglers reported finding some crank-bait fish in the same areas it appears that a slowed down presentation produced more consistently for most anglers. Patriots Challenge also reported that the Texas State legislature has overwhelmingly passed the Honor and Remember resolution to officially adopt the Honor and Remember flag in the State of Texas. The final step is for the Governor to sign the final resolution. This means that
