Voorheess Summer Twilight
Concert Series is back for another
year of free entertainment at
John Connolly Park.
For 11 years, the concert series
has had a compilation of cover
bands playing music familiar to
both the young and old.
Every year, we kind of kick off
the summer with the annual
Summer Twilight Series, said
Mike Marchitto, director of spe-
cial events and the township eco-
nomic development director.
This year, the series is made up
of four different performances
spread out from June to August,
with a movie night ending the se-
ries in September.
Marchitto said, like every year,
there are both new and old bands
in the mix a familiar practice
used every year when making the
list. He said he likes to freshen

MAYORS MESSAGE

E
very four years, there is a big,
big election in New Jersey that
costs candidates lots and lots of
money. Gubernatorial candidates ad-
vertise hard and heavy throughout the
state, spending boatloads of cash in the
New York City and Philadelphia metro
markets.
This years election for Garden State
governor is extra special because the
incumbent, Chris Christie, is thought
to be a leading candidate for the Re-
public nomination for president in
2016.
Before that is a possibility, though,
he will have to beat his Democratic op-
ponent in New Jersey this November.
And, even before that, hell have to
defeat his Republican opposition for
the gubernatorial nomination, Seth
Grossman, an Atlantic County lawyer
and political veteran.
While the focus of this election has
already been on Christie and top Dem-
ocratic candidate Barbara Buono, both
must make it through next Tuesdays
Primary Election before they can com-
pletely turn their focus to Novembers
General Election.
Buono, a state senator from Newark
who has been representing the 18th
Legislative District since 2002, will
square off against Troy Webster, an
aide to the mayor of East Orange.
If Buono and Christie succeed next
week, as many expect, theyll officially
turn their focus on each other, letting
the money, and muckraking, fly.
Both parties have already begun tel-
evision ad campaigns, and the number
of ads and ferocity of the content will
surely pick up as Novembers election
approaches.
Its an unfortunate reality of cur-
rent-day electioneering, especially in
this state.
So expect your TV sets, your radios
and your newspapers to be filled with
political advertisements over the next
six months until an official governor is
named.
In the meantime, get out and vote in
the Primary Election next Tuesday,
June 4, if youre a registered Republi-
can or Democrat.
In addition to the gubernatorial elec-
tion, there are also elections for the
General Assembly, state Senate and
local governing bodies. This is your
first chance to let your voice be heard.
Campaign season has begun

Camden County Police
Department hits the streets
On May 1, the
Camden County
Police Depart-
ment officially
started its patrols
walking the beat
throughout the
neighborhoods of
Camden City. This
initiative, which
was created by the
Freeholder Board more than two
years ago, has culminated in a ro-
bust law enforcement agency
that is making an immediate im-
pact on the Countys most chal-
lenged municipality.
After many long months of
hard work, Governor Chris
Christie joined me at the swear-
ing-in of Chief Scott Thomson
and marking the official installa-
tion of the leader of our crime
fighting organization. Since our
original deployment date, the
Camden County Police Depart-
ment has gotten back to basics by
putting police on foot, in neigh-
borhoods and empowering the
community.
Since that date the impact has
been immediate and tangible and
we have witnessed a significant
downturn in gun related crime
from the areas where robust foot
patrols are active. Nevertheless, we
still have not fully deployed all of
our officers and continue to grow
the department, which will be op-
erating with 401 sworn officers.
Walking through different
neighborhoods with the Metro
Division, Ive met many resi-
dents embracing the new police
presence on their block. In fact, I
heard a resident of the Fairview
neighborhood tell one of our po-
lice officers, thank God youre
here. This has been a common
refrain and the same sentiment
Ive heard business owners make
along the Haddon
Avenue corridor
in Parkside. In ad-
dition, our surveil-
lance equipment
has not picked up
a gun shot in the
area since our de-
ployment into
these pinpointed
neighborhoods.
Overall, our main objective
was achieved as we are providing
the resources and capacity that
Camden City needs to put
guardians on every block
throughout its network of neigh-
borhoods. These resources will
provide a safer city, cut the de-
mand for narcotics and most im-
portantly allow children to play
in the parks and streets that used
to be populated by thugs and
hooligans.
In regards to funding, as Ive
said before, and with Gov.
Christie, Sen Norcross and
Mayor Redd by my side, this new
law enforcement agency is being
paid for by the City of Camden
and supplemented by state aid.
This shared service will not cost
County property taxpayers any
additional money.
The goal of the department is
to join with residents in trans-
forming the City and making
Camden County a safer place to
live, work and raise a family. That
said, with a very small sample
size, we are making significant
progress towards that goal and
delivering public safety services
in a more effective manner.
If you want more information
on the new department go to
www.CamdenCountyPD.org or
like them at www.face-
book.com/camdencountypd and
follow them on Twitter at @Cam-
denCountyPD.

Residents invited
to review bike trail plan
The Freeholder Board invites
residents to review the final draft
of the Camden County Bicycle
and Multi-Use Trail Master Plan.
The latest plans for the multi-
phase project will be presented to
the public on May 29 at the Cam-
den County Boathouse at Cooper
River Park in Pennsauken at 6
p.m.
The trail network will provide
county residents with new recre-
ational opportunities, while cre-
ating an alternative means of
transportation between destina-
tions such as schools, shopping
centers, parks and recreation fa-
cilities, and historic sites, both
within each municipality and
throughout the county, said
Freeholder Jeffrey L. Nash, liai-
son to the Department of Parks.
The plan identifies both on-
road bike routes and off-road trail
locations that together create an
interconnected network from
Winslow and Waterford to Cam-
den and Pennsauken and all mu-
nicipalities in between.
Based on recommendations
initially made in the 2004 Camden
County Open Space and Farm-
land Preservation Plan, the plan
was developed with the assis-
tance of local officials and input
from the public, Nash said.
The plan aims to connect coun-
ty residents to trails, as well as en-
hance opportunities to walk or
bike to schools, parks, shops and
employment centers. It is consid-
ered a companion to the Camden
County Open Space and Farm-
land Preservation Plan in that it
makes maximum use of the
greenways identified in that plan
for future off-road trails thereby
providing residents with access
to publicly owned green space.
The final version of the plan
will be presented to the Camden
County Planning Board for incor-
poration into the countys master
plan. Those interested in attend-
ing should RSVP at www.camden-
countytrails.eventbrite.com. A
light dinner will be served.

joined together in support of the
smallest citizens of Camden
County babies by participat-
ing in the 2013 March for Babies
to benefit the March of Dimes.
Virtua Voorhees was packed with
strollers, families and corporate
teams helping to try to achieve
the New Jersey goal of $3.6 mil-
lion to help babies be born
healthy.
Special guests at the days
events included March for Babies
Chair Barbara Hansen, a nurse
and the administrative director
for maternal child health at Vir-
tua, and Gianna Christman, the
South New Jersey Division
March for Babies ambassador.
Walkers at the event enjoyed
many fun activities such as face
painting, arts and crafts projects
and a cotton candy machine.
It was a memorable and re-
warding day for all of us, said
Angela Christman, whose daugh-
ter, Gianna, served as the 2013
South Jersey Ambassador.
When Gianna was born 15
weeks premature, we decided we
wanted to do everything possible
to help spare other families from
the trauma we experienced. We
wanted to turn what was the most
frightening time in our life into
something positive. As a result of
what my family endured, I went
into nursing school and I am now
a NICU nurse in the same hospi-
tal that Gianna was born in. This
year was our 10th year walking in
March for Babies and were hon-
ored to represent the March of
Dimes in return for all the sup-
port theyve given us and our fam-
ily.
Money raised by the event
funds research, education and
local community grants for pro-
grams such as Healthy Babies are

Thank you to all of our state-
wide sponsors who made the
March for Babies event a success
and who continue to support the
efforts of the March of Dimes
and its very important mission,
said Addy Bonet, state director,
March of Dimes state chapter.
Its not too late to donate to
March for Babies and help New
Jersey reach its goal of $3.6 mil-
lion. Visit marchforbabies.org for

Clothes dryers are responsible for an estimated 15,000
home fires in the U.S. annually, causing over $84 million in
property damage. The leading cause of the fires was lint
build-up in the exhaust system.
COITs Dryer Vent Cleaning will help reduce the lint build-
up in a typical transition hose. Plus, our skilled technicians
can remove the dust, pollens and contaminants from yours

Residents living in and around
the Voorhees community can be
screened to reduce their risk of
having a stroke or bone fracture.
Yardley Commons will host Life
Line Screening on May 30. The
site is located at 209 Laurel Rd.
Voorhees. Walter Mueller of Par-
sippany attended a Life Line
Screening and said, "Thank you
for saving my life.
Four key points every person
needs to know: stroke is the third
leading cause of death and a lead-
ing cause of permanent disabili-
ty; 80 percent of stroke victims
had no apparent warning signs
prior to their stroke; preventive
ultrasound screenings can help
you avoid a stroke; and screen-
ings are fast, noninvasive, pain-
less, affordable and convenient
Screenings identify potential
cardiovascular conditions such
as blocked arteries and irregular
heart rhythm, abdominal aortic
aneurysms, and hardening of the
arteries in the legs, which is a
strong predictor of heart disease.
A bone density screening to as-
sess osteoporosis risk is also of-
fered and is appropriate for both
men and women.
Packages start at $159. All five
screenings take 60 to 90 minutes

By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Voorhees Sun
Professional gymnast and East-
ern High School alumnus Bran-
don Wynn recently competed in
the Pro Gymnastics Challenge,
which aired on ESPN2 on May 22.
According to the PGC, it is a
skill-for-skill competition with
teams consisting of both men and
women squaring off against each
other for true athletic supremacy.
There is offense and defense; the
team on the offensive performs a
skill or sequence of skills after
which the defensive team at-
tempts to do that skill or se-
quence of skills better. Referees
determine the winner and the
winning team gains the point or
points and offensive control. In
the event of a tie, the audience
votes to decide the winner. On
each event, the winning team is
the first one to 10 points, exclud-
ing the speed ropes, which are a
time challenge.
Its cool and unique and some-
thing weve never done before,
Wynn said.
Wynn generally competes in all
the skills, however rings are his
favorite.
He has been a gymnast for 17
years, and following PGC, he will
be preparing for Worlds, which
will eventually lead to the
Olympics.
According to the PGC website,
coaching the USA team was 2008
Olympic Gold All-Around Cham-
pion Nastia Liukin. Other
Olympic notables competing
were 2008 Silver and Bronze
medalist Jonathon Horton, 2012
Olympic team member Jacob Dal-
ton, 2008 Olympic team Silver
medalist Chellsie Memmel and
six-time Olympian Oksana
Chusovitina from Uzbekistan.
Though he was able to compete
for fun with PGC, Wynn takes the
sport seriously, with his eyes on
the prize.
Theres never any downtime
or offseason, its just concentrat-
ing with that [the Olympics] in
mind, Wynn said.
Wynn trains for about five
hours a day, practicing skills, flex-
ibility and routines. Though hes
graduated from Ohio State, he
wont have any time for a full-
time job.
According to his website, he is
the co-owner of TW Enterprises,
LLC, a fitness development, fit-
ness equipment
development/production and
consulting effort, a technical ath-
letic advisor and business devel-
opment assistant for Attain Your
Vision, LLC, and a motivational

The Camden County Library
System is holding one of the
largest used-book sales in South
Jersey on Friday, June 7, from 10
a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, June
8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at its re-
gional branch library in
Voorhees.
The branch library plans to
offer 25,000 to 50,000 books, CDs,
videos, books-on-tape and more
for sale at drastically reduced
prices. Customers, collectors and
estates donate about 90 percent of
the items, with used library mate-
rials making up only about 10 per-
cent of the items at the Spring
Book Sale.
Typically hundreds of book-
lovers, bargain hunters and
book dealers from the tri-state
area are attracted to the
event where 99 percent of the
items will be priced between 50
cents and $2, with nothing more
than $3, according to William
Brahms, branch manager of the
Voorhees library.
All proceeds from the sale will
go to support programs for cus-
tomers of the Camden County Li-
brary System.
The M. Allan Vogelson Region-

203 Laurel Rd. across from the
Voorhees Town Center, which is
14 miles from Philadelphia, 10

Its about the work. Theres no
way you can reach these goals
without the work, Wynn said.
Its well thought out. You know
youre going to get from A to B

New athletic field named
Boundless Field
The Freeholder Board named
the new recreational field located
at Challenge Grove Park designed
to accommodate all athletes
Boundless Field. The final
name came from the winning
entry in an online contest opened
to residents to help name the
field.
At a meeting on May 14, Cam-
den Countys Parks and Events
Committee chose the name as
most fitting for this project. The
online contest ran for six weeks.
Freeholder Deputy Director Ed
McDonnell has been working on
this project for years to enhance
the Camden County Park System.
The Boundless Field will pro-
vide children and adults with
physical and cognitive disabili-
ties the opportunity to play on the
same recreational surface as
their non-disabled friends, Mc-
Donnell said.
The beautiful new field will
provide a variety of opportuni-
ties for disabled children to play
baseball, soccer, volleyball,
lacrosse, badminton and many
more activities at the facility.
One of every ten children can-
not play on a playground even
an American with Disabilities
Act (ADA) approved playground,
because of physical limitations.
Thousands of children with dis-
abilities live in Camden County,
which includes a variety of non-
profit organizations and schools,
which serve disabled children
and adults.
These identified populations
would derive a significant benefit
from this new amenity at Chal-
lenge Grove Park.
This facility will be a perfect
complement to Jakes Place, an
accessible playground in the
same park, and add another im-
portant piece to the fully accessi-
ble, award-winning Challenge
Grove Park, McDonnell said.
Challenge Grove will become a
place where anything is possible
not just baseball and softball. It
will unite families and provide
children and adults with enjoy-
ment every day.
The boundless athletic field is
being completed at Camden
Countys Challenge Grove Park,
the award-winning fully accessi-
ble park at the corner of Bortons
Mill and Caldwell roads in Cher-
ry Hill. The official opening cere-
mony of Boundless Field will be
held in June, where the resident
who submitted the name will be
recognized.
Two selected as
50 over 50
Bowman & Company LLP part-
ners John F. Dailey Jr., CPA, and
Nina S. Sorelle, CPA, were recent-
ly selected as New Jersey Society

which highlights senior society
members who significantly
impact the accounting profession
by their involvement in career ac-
tivities, professional enhance-
ment, community service or soci-
ety volunteer activities.
Dailey has 40 years of account-
ing and auditing experience serv-
icing municipalities, school dis-
tricts, charter schools and other
governmental clients.
He is also a past president of
the NJSCPA. He holds a bachelors
degree in accounting from Vil-
lanova University.
Sorelle has more than 25 years

rience serving not for profit and
commercial clients.
She also performs peer reviews

tified Fraud Examiner. She holds
