GENERAL INFORMATION

Full-wave modeling is a method of the accurate computer simulation of the waves propagating in the arbitrarily complex heterogeneous medium. TESSERAL 2-D is an integrated graphic software package which allow a) visual construction of the complex continuous cross-sections, b) sound/seismic fullwave modeling, and c) online analysis of the results.
1

TESSERAL means constituting an isometric system, regular; relating to- or resembling tessera [Latin, periphrasis from Greek] tessares, tettares - four, being four cornered, consisting of four parts; a small rectangular piece, a part of mosaic.

Main orientation of the TESSERAL 2-D is the geophysical processing and interpretation , but it also may be used in other areas such as the medicine and engineering ultrasound analysis. Source data includes specifications of a) the wave generation and observation system, and b) of the distribution of the related physical parameters. This information may be supplied by the user or imported from other software packages. The resulting data is produced in two types: a) shotgathers simulating sound/seismic records registered by the arrays of receivers, and b) a series of snapshots of the cross-section wave-field. All types of data can be seen and analyzed in various forms on screen, printed out, or exported to other program systems. The package is adjusted to the desktop workstation/PC hardware configuration and to the Windows environment. The very effective computational scheme is employed and has proven to be practicable despite very high and intensive processing requirements. It dramatically reduces amount of calculations and necessary computer memory using most of the desktop computer resources. This scheme overcomes many technical difficulties, and greatly reduces computational artifacts. Initial results reveal that this approach makes it possible to build much closer approximation to the real physical processes and in a much wider band of parameters that it was previously. For the end user it may be more attractive and comprehensive, due to its simplicity and easiness. It also makes it possible to model cross-sections of practical in the prospecting geophysics size (10 km x 10 km and more) and practical signal frequencies (up to 50-100 Hz) on the desktop workstations and PC instead of supercomputers. Ultrasound modeling just changes scales of the cross-section and signal by order of 3. For example, cross-section size ~1x1m, signal 50-100 kHz. A next and natural step in the developing may be expansion in the 3-D, but for now such full-wave volume modeling requires much more powerful hardware. 1.1. Full-Wave modeling and Ray-tracing The full-wave modeling and the ray-tracing techniques have many common features, but there are qualities proper only to either of them. With the fast development of the computer hardware the full-wave modeling is becoming more attractive, especially as a verification procedure in complex and important cases of the sound/seismic data analysis. The ray-tracing method is now routinely used. The development of the practicable hi-fi wave propagation modeling tools is in its uprise. Below is comparison of both techniques:

Full-Wave Modeling

Ray-Tracing

W.1) Difference: Propagating waves are calculated as a distribution of instant and local movements and pressures changing with time on the whole cross-section.

R.1) Difference: Each ray is calculated as a string of points progressing with time and normal to the wave front. Calculation for each ray trace is made separately.

W.2) Disadvantage: Wave fronts cannot be treated separately. Dividing of the waves for analysis may be difficult. Stable and correct calculations require huge amount of arithmetic operations, take a lot of RAM and cannot be done interactively. W.3) Advantage: Modeling is the most close to the wave propagation process, which can be easily visualized as the animated series of snapshots. No conceptual restrictions applied. Dynamic parameters are intrinsic to the calculations, and may be determined with high accuracy even for complex models and whole range of angles of incidence. Reflections and conversions (as well as diffraction and other wave effects) are an integral part of calculation and do not require special control. Complexity of the model does not influence the quality and stability of calculations.

R.2) Advantage: Rays may be treated separately, for example, for tomography applications. Different ray clusters can be separated for analysis. Takes comparatively little time and RAM for calculations. Stability in many cases is not an important issue. May be interactive. R.3) Disadvantage: Modeling is restricted by the geometry optic theory: no diffraction and other effects proper to the wave nature. Visualization of the raytraces does not give good understanding of the wave effects. Calculations of dynamic ray parameters (amplitudes) require additional operations, and their accuracy is limited, especially for complex models and wide incidence angles. Reflection event must be controlled for each discontinuity, and produces a separate cluster of rays, making it difficult to calculate multiple reflections and conversions. It is difficult to make the uniform and stable ray coverage for the complex model, which produces blind spots and big, unstable gaps between ray-traces.

About the Method All sound/seismic full-wave modeling schemes are deduced from the differential wave equation and the mechanical formulae for the particle motion. They imply dependence of the wave propagation on a number of physical parameters distributed in space. Some of them are static, such as local wave velocity and density; the others are dynamic, such as the instant particle movement, pressure, etc. Static parameters do not vary with time and are prior to computations of the dynamic ones. Oscillating change of dynamic parameters with computations is equivalent to their variation with time, which is regarded as the wave propagation. For digital modeling of the processes developing in the continuous heterogeneous medium special logical discrete structures and operational schemes are used. TESSERAL 2-D employs: a) the finite difference technique considering the medium as a set of rectangular grids with fixed mesh size ; and b) an explicit 3

scheme, where each step of calculations corresponds to the time progress, creating the wave propagation sequence. Major limitation of this approach is in uniformity of the grid. It means that the minimal velocity of the modeled medium and the highest frequency of the signal impose a strict constraint for improving performance of the algorithm. In other words, the number of arithmetic operations increases proportionally to the cube of the wave frequency and the square of the maximal slowness (inverse of velocity) in the crosssection. But for complex practical cases it is the most correct, relatively simple and quick, if implemented technically accurately. When installed in multiple processor systems it easily allows manifold parallel computations. The developed Tesseral scheme adds a lot of improvements and is the most economical. It reduces requirements for computer resources many times by using interlaced grids, each substituting a number of the conventional ones. Such grid has complex internal structure and contains not only one parameter but several arranged in special pattern. In other words: the variables do not have to be represented in all grid nodes: each component has its own positional symmetry. Operations between data in such grid are much simpler, and amount of required memory and processing is reduced many times . There are many other technical solutions, which make this method practical and attractive to the user.
