Latest News on the Goose Bay Remediation Project

The project team is getting ready for another very busy year on the project. With over a dozen separate contracts underway or planned for 2013, ranging in size from a few thousand dollars to multi-million dollar, there will be a lot of activity in various locations. Evidence of some of the work can already be seen near the entrance of 5 Wing, beside Loring Drive, with a new fence around part of the airfield and numerous white boxes. These boxes protect the well heads that extract fuel from the Former Hydrant Area, one of the 10 sub-projects carried out under the overall Goose Bay Remediation Project (GBRP). The fuel recovery systems at this site have been operational since last fall.

Soil remediation at the Survival Tank Farm will commence soon, as equipment is currently being mobilized to the site. It is important to be aware of activities in all these areas, especially where recreation activities, such as snowmobiling and all-terrain vehicle driving, may interact with site operations. Public safety is of paramount concern to the project team, 5 Wing, and DND, and as such, new fencing and other site controls will be in place around any active remediation areas. As of last fall, 8 of the 10 sub-projects have received approval for full implementation since the project was announced by the Honourable Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, in 2009. Only two sub-projects remain to be approved, and the project is still on track to be completed by 2020 and on budget. The project continues to be funded by the Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan, and enjoys the support of the Plans Expert Support departments (Environment Canada, Health Canada, and Department of Fisheries and Oceans). The project team continues to work with a variety of stakeholders to ensure the best and most efficient use of project resources, and to ensure that the project fits with the broader vision of the government and the community of Happy Valley-Goose Bay. The project staff will continue to promote project activities to the public, stakeholders, and industry at various events. We are always looking for opportunities to share our progress, communicate our next steps, and exchange ideas and opportunities for the future. Look for information on a Public Information Session planned for this fall, where residents and stakeholders will be invited to meet with the project team and get more information on what we have accomplished so far, and our plans for the next few years. We will continue to competitively tender every contract in a fair, open and transparent matter, as per Government of Canada contracting policy, using Canadas electronic tendering service MERX - for all DND/Canadian Armed Forces activities related to its contracts, such as Letters of Interest, Requests for Proposals and Advance Contract Award Notices. http://www.merx.com/
