NEW EXHIBIT- new exhibition opened recently at the Washington County Historical Society: Stocking the General Stores in Washington County, New York, 1900 to 1950. Changes in transportation are documented by period photographs and artifacts. Goods and services in the stores are discussed by local writers who also remembered or heard about railway and canal experiences. Shipments made their way up the Hudson, through the Champlain Canal and north to Lake Champlain or when heading south to Albany, Troy or New York City. Containers had improved to accommodate larger numbers of goods and more efficient ways to dispense foods in the stores. Options in 1900 now included wooden boxes, cloth bags, crates, barrels, kegs, tin bins, cans and, for home-use, scuttles and baskets. There was no light-weight cardboard, no corrugated cardboard boxes, few brown paper bags, to say nothing of plastic! Conveyances varied according to size, weight, and distance which commodities had to travel. Locally, some general stores would take orders and deliver in a day or two. A wagon or cart with horse could be rented by an individual or small business from a livery for local travel. Within the county, stagecoaches could carry travelers and their baggage, smaller parcels, and some mail. By using both the canal and, later, the railroad, general stores provided necessary and desirable goods closer to home. Stocking the General Stores is open to the public at no charge on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M. through November. It is in the Heritage Research Center at the Washington County Historical Society, 167 Broadway, Fort Edward, New York. For further information call 518747-9108 or email wchs@wchs-ny.org. SEED GIVEAWAY- As we approach the 2013 growing season, let us show our pride and plant Warrensburghs colors - blue and gold - in our landscape. Warrensburgh Beautification will be giving away Heavenly Blue Morning Glory seeds, the Town of Warrensburgh Bicentennial Flower, in celebration of the 200th anniversary. The seeds were a donation by John Scheepers Kitchen Garden Seeds. Seed packets with planting instructions will be available at the following locations: Aloha Florist, Emerson Town Hall, Glens Falls National Bank, Lazy River Farms; Nemecs Sport Shop, Farm & Garden Center; Rebeccas Florist and the Warrensburgh Museum of Local History. The Warren County Bicentennial Flower, Rudbeckia hirta, will also be available to purchase at local garden centers. Gardens of blue and gold flowers and heirloom variety plants will be judged and awards given by a committee of Beautification this Summer. Any questions, please contact Teresa Whalen at 466-5497 or taawhalen@yahoo.com.

What at first was conceived as a small open house to give the public a chance to see a saw mill in action and learn about the concept of sustainability in forestry, had blossomed into a celebration of all things wood-related. This year Gary and Wini Martin, who run the operation with Winis brother Bill Good, will be joined by one dozen otherswood workers, artisans, naturalists, and others in the wood processing business. The lineup includes Bill LaPrairie, who joins Gary on walks into the woodlot, and points out medicinal plants they encounter as Martin explains the concept of selective cutting of trees. Johnsburgs Pinky ODell demonstrates the firewood processors he builds, while Bruce Updike operates an Alaskan milling attachment for a chainsaw. John Los demonstrates wooden spoon carving and also offers cutting boards and Windsor chairs, while Bob Brooks of Adirondack Attitudes shows and sells Adirondack rustic home accessories and Dan Feldt demonstrates making his custom order cedar signs. Featured at this years Woods Walk is heritage craftsman Andy LeBlanc of Indian Lake, whose business, Barn Works, rescues and restores old barns. At the June 1 event he will begin construction of a timber frame garden shed to be used as a fundraiser for Thurman Station Association in a July 27 drawing.
