Grants provide funding for new media studies center

s the result of 2 grants totaling $1 million from the Ahmanson Foundation, Pitzer College will be creating a new Center for Media Studies within a new multi-use facility that will break ground this month. The project is part of the 2nd phase of the colleges ongoing residential life project.
We are so pleased with the Ahmanson Foundations support of Pitzers Media Studies Program. It is one of the best such programs in the country, and the Foundations gift will make it even stronger, said Pitzer College President Laura Trombley. Pitzers Media Studies Program is an interdisciplinary field that explores the histories, technologies and social and cultural contexts of a range of contemporary media forms, including mechanical and electronic media such as film, video, print and the Internet, as well as other contemporary forms of culture. The program offers 70 courses per semester with specific focuses in Film/Video, Digital Electronic Media and Critical Studies. The popular major has experienced one of the biggest increases among the

giving the department a better location. As my major, of course it is nice to think of how the program is growing, expanding and has a need for newer facilities, Ms. Alexander. Having a bigger and newer facility would be nice. Right now, were all making the best of the situation. The basement has its own culture. There are no windows and I think theres a camaraderie that weve developed over not seeing the light of day. But to be able to do this without having to raise the costs at Pitzer is great. School club taps students computer expertise

ore than 20 Oakmont Outdoor School students are mixing their creativity with technology as part of the schools Media Club.
Headed by Oakmont computer instructor Diane duPlessis, the club allows students of all grades to create games, videos and podcasts on Wednesdays after school. The Media Club is also responsible for the Oakmont Outdoor School website. Im very proud of our kids, Ms. duPlessis said. I give them creative license and they take it from there. Ms. duPlessis uses open source software to provide the programs the students use in the computer lab. The free software is considered public domain and can be downloaded for personal use, study and improvement. The Media Club currently uses open source software such as KompoZer (website creation tool), Game Maker (video game creation tool) and Alice (computer programming in a 3D environment). We wouldnt have any programs without open source software, Ms. duPlessis explained. I do a lot of open source searching and the kids sometimes bring in software that we can use. To buy software and then pay for licensing for all the computers would be too expensive. Sixth graders Parker Graffhan and Kalvin Vinski are currently creating a video game using the Game Maker 8.0 program. The interface of the program allows students to create characters, backgrounds, objects and animations without having to code the components themselves. According to the two students, the finished product will be a platform game featuring an explorer as the main character.

What I thought about making a treasure hunting game, it would be something that Mario [Bros.], Kalvin said. Right now, were working on putting in shooting arrows, traps and we just found something that resembled spikes. Along with his current video game project, Parker was also one of the designers for Oakmonts 2010-11 website. His work can be seen on the main webpage as an animated brown owl brings in the Oakmont Outdoor School banner at the top of the page. I used a program called GIMP to do animations and I saved the files as gifs, Parker pointed out. I

came to Media Club because you can do things like make your own games and movies. When my friend told me that I could do it, then I started coming since the beginning of last year. Word of mouth has been one of the ways that the clubs popularity has grown over the last few years. Third grader Mia Garza-Jenkins has now been in the club for 2 years after one of her friends persuaded her to join. Mia enjoys the freedom she has to explore different types of media. Its very fun and you can mostly do whatever you want, she said. Im [currently] working on a movie based on a manga Ive been reading. My favorite thing to do is reading but this class would be my 2nd favorite. Ive also worked on the [school websites] welcome page and when my mother saw me, she said, Oh my gosh! And then she showed my grandmother and my cousins saw it too. Fellow 3rd grader Avery Villanueva was the friend who invited Mia to Media Club a couple of years ago. Yet Avery was invited by another student to join when she was in first grade. Though the 3rd grader said she wanted to be a pharmacist or chemist when she gets older, she enjoys exploring the technology that Media Club provides. Her favorite program is Alicea 3D programming environment that allows the users to create animations to tell a story, play an interactive video game or share a video online. Ive been working with it since last year, Avery said. With Alice, you get to do different things. You can make a person and create your ideas on the computer. When I first started, I didnt know how to change the background or colors. But now I feel like Ive learned a lot and now I know how to download Alice. I like Media Club because my mind is free to open up and I can do what Im thinking.

Boutique focuses on younger, price-conscious audience

new boutique in the Village hopes to stand out from the competition by catering to a younger crowd with budget minded pricing.
Nectar, a clothing store for teens and young women, opened at 319 W. First St. after the location was recently vacated by Three French Hens and Wisteria Grove. The store has quickly gained a following with the lure of boutique quality fashion thats affordable. The store has been open since October 20, just in time for Village Venture. Her new neighbor Lori Paley, owner of Aromatique, urged owner Tricia Kelly to get the store open before the daylong festival. We sold half of our store, Ms. Kelly said. It was just a crazy amount of traffic and sales that day. It really taught me what Claremont events are capable of. The store is the third retail outlet for Ms. Kelly. The Redlands native first opened a designer jeans store called DenM in downtown Redlands. Two years ago, she opened the first Nectar near her other business. We realized that the economy was changing and so were peoples spending habits, Ms. Kelly said. People didnt have as much money to spend on brand name labels. Nectar was the answer to that. Its affordable fashion for young women. And it was a smashing success. Wanting to expand on Nectars successful business model, Ms. Kelly decided to open another location in a similar downtown area. Claremont was her top choice but she had to wait about a year for the ideal

space to open up. It was very similar to Redlands in that its a college community and the downtown has a great historic vibe, Ms. Kelly said. We feel very comfortable here. The store offers t-shirts, jeans, dresses, winter wear, jewelry and other accessories. Basic t-shirts run for about $5, tops are $20 and dresses are about $30. Were driven first and foremost by price, not by designer name brands, Ms. Kelly said. Its affordable fashion and boutique style. One popular product that Nectar offers is Toms Shoes. The company donates a pair of shoes to children in need for every pair purchased. Ms. Kelly said about 80 percent of her stores clothing is made in the USA. Ms. Kelly hopes her store will attract more foot traffic to the Village by offering something unique. When we first opened Nectar in Redlands, we were afraid that wed put our other store out of business, Ms. Kelly said. But actually, it made the

whole area busier and business boomed at both stores. I think the same thing can happen here. We want our store to enhance the downtown area and be a big part of the community. Nectar is open Monday through Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Other new businesses are popping up in the Village. The Healthy Hair Bar, located at 260 W. Bonita Ave., will celebrate its grand opening with an official ribbon cutting ceremony tomorrow at 5:30 p.m. The salon offers 100 percent human hair wigs, natural hair straightening, organic hair coloring, hair extensions and treatments for thinning hair and receding hairlines. A new bakery is also scheduled to open in the Village. Cocoa Bakery, specializing in cakes made from scratch, will open on Second Street in the coming weeks.

Finding the light wherever it shines

by John Pixley

I heard it was plastic. Its plastic... Like puzzle pieces... So that explains it, I thought. I was wondering how an outdoor ice rink was going to be set up in the Village for an afternoon and evening.
I was also wondering, when I first read about it, why it wasnt going to be up for the whole month, over the holidays, or for two months, like in LA or San Francisco. But I was getting way ahead of myself and Claremont. Sure enough, there they were. The puzzle lines. I saw them right away when I went to check out the rink that was installed in the parking lot at Second Street and Indian Hill Boulevard for the Holiday Promenade earlier this month. This was a firstice skating in the Villageand I was curious. So were plenty of other people, and, as I kept hearing them comment while I was there, they, like me, soon realized that it wasnt exactly ice skating. The secret of the fake ice was out. But I didnt hear any laughing about this. I didnt hear anyone say that it was cheap, that it was a joke. The laughter that I heard was from children, clearly delighted to be out on the white stuff, and I heard several others say that they wanted to join in. No, the faux ice wasnt a downer. It didnt put a damper on the holiday cheer. In fact, I heard a mother say, Thats good for us! It wont be so cold. I was reminded once again of the lights we see all around us now, shining out, giving us warmth and hope in this darkest and coldest time of year. As I watched the childrensome quite older than othersgrin and cheer as they made their way on silver blades, it was more than evident that this small, rinkydink rink with its fake ice was, for that afternoon and

observer
evening, one of the crazy, magical, shining lights in this season. It was not unlike when I went to Whittier a couple evenings earlier and saw one of these brightest lights. And it was at the wrong place and at the wrong time. Again, I was curious about something and wanted to check it out. After attending the community service for World AIDS Day on December 1 in Claremont for years, I decided to attend this years service at the Good Samaritan Metropolitan Community Church in Whittier. Its not that I havent liked the Claremont service; I just wanted to see how the gay Christian church would do it. I have been attending this church from time to time, intrigued and encouraged that there is a place that actively combines Christianity and the gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender community, two forces all too often directly and explosively opposed to each other, providing a safe harbor for those who have been hurt. The small storefront building has been fortifiedliterallywith a stained glass window (featuring a cross on a rainbow sunburst background) that cant be broken and a sign that cant be knocked down. This is a whole new meaning of tough love. Reverend Gina Chapman, who is about as strong and fortified as the building, told me when I first visited that the window had been smashed and the sign had been toppled. She also told me of the time she offered a

donut to a man who sat in a car in front of the church during a service. The man refused, saying, I dont want none of that AIDS. As I said, I went to see what the church did for World AIDS Day. But when I got there, I found out that I was at the wrong place, that the event had been moved. It was at a youth center, which happened to be close by. I soon found myself at an office in an industrial park in a not-well-lit park. There was loud dance music, which I thought was odd, and I found also that I was too late, that the event had been moved to an earlier time. There was a steady stream of people leaving and lingering in the parking lot, and I could see that this office is an important place in the GLBT community. It is clearly a hub, a center, reaching out to those, especially the young, who may be lost and keeping them safe. Far from West Hollywood and the big-city lights, this, like the church, is a light shining out in a dark place where it can be quite cold. Whats more, most of the people were Latino, and it was evident that the event had had a distinctly Chicano flavor. Again, an example of two cultures that one thinks of as being at odds coming together and finding strength. This is a big change from not too long ago, giving us hope in this holiday season and as we go into a new year. I keep thinking of what Hector Tobar wrote in one of his recent columns in the Los Angles Times about how, until after World War II, Monday was Mexican Day at the municipal pool in Orange and then it would be drained and re-filled the next day so that the whites could swim in it. Not only are we now a bit less afraid of each other, were saving a considerable amount of water. Theres another light burning bright in the dark and cold.

Why does the Search for Meaning always seem to be located in such out of the way far-fetched places?

A new start to arms control

Dear Editor: Arms control measures are essential to increasing global stability and peace in an interdependent world. Toward that end, the League of Women Voters believes that the U.S. government should work toward arms control efforts that: 1) Limit or reduce the quantity of weapons; 2) Limit proliferation and prohibit first use of nuclear weapons; 3) Prohibit first use and possession of chemical, biological and radiological weapons; and 4) Reduce tensions in order to prevent situations in which weapons might be used. The Senate is currently considering ratification of the new START Treaty. This would be the first arms control treaty between the United States and Russia in a decade. The START treaty calls for regular inspections and timely exchanges of information regarding nuclear arsenals. It would not only reduce the number of deployed nuclear weapons in both the United States and Russia but could also influence other nations to follow suit. The Senate Committee on Foreign

readers comments
Relations passed the new START Treaty by a bipartisan vote in September 2010 after months of hearings and support from high ranking members of the previous 7 administrations. The goals of the START Treaty, to reach a near term reduction of nuclear weapons with mutually agreed verification, will make for a stable strategic relationship between the two nations. The Senate should ratify the new START Treaty. The League asks you to please contact Senators Boxer and Feinstein and ask them to ensure that START is ratified. Please pass this alert to other concerned citizensyour grassroots network, your friends, neighbors and coworkers. Encourage them to contact their Senators today.

DREAM Act is flawed

Dear Editor: Ellen Taylors December 11 letter fails to mention some important facts about the DREAM Act. 1. The DREAM Act will grant legal status (amnesty) to illegal alien youths. However, the kids may be as old as 35 when they apply. 2. The applicants need only submit a claim that they are qualified. They do not have to provide any proof. Once the applicant submits his/her petition the only way it can be denied is if the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) proves that the claim is false. The USCIS already has over 3 million applications pending. The applicant cannot be deported unless USCIS proves the alien does not qualify and the petition is denied. That requires a long and costly investigation. Unless that happens the applicant has legal status and a work permit. The potential for

fraud is obvious. 3. No illegal aliens with criminal records can qualify. However, such trivial matters as DUIs, domestic violence or violations of immigration laws or crimes committed to achieve immigration related goals such as document fraud will not disqualify the applicant. 4. Once granted permanent residence status DREAM Act beneficiaries can become U.S. citizens and thanks to the family reunification provisions of our immigration laws they can sponsor their relativesparents, siblings left in the home country, aunts, uncles, cousins or legal immigration into the U.S. 5. Because of all of the above the DREAM Act is going to encourage even more illegal immigration into the U.S. The message will be clear: if you can sneak into the U.S. your kid can become a citizen and eventually all will be well with you.

Stags, Sagehens working to overcome early season jitters

t hasnt been the best of starts for the Pomona-Pitzer and Claremont-MuddScripps mens basketball teams this 2010-11 season.
The defending Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) champion Stags currently have a 2-4 record while last years SCIAC runner-up Sagehens are faring just a bit better at 3-4. C-M-S is presently riding a 4-game losing streak while Pomona-Pitzer had its recent 3-game winning streak snapped by Chapman on Saturday. Defense has been one of the Stags key struggles in

their first 6 games this season. To date, their opponents are shooting 50.6 percent from the field and have racked up nearly 30 more assists than C-M-S with a 90-61 margin. Meanwhile, Claremont-MuddScripps is shooting 43 percent from the field and outrebound their opponents on average, 32 to 30. The Stags have missed leading scorer Chris Blees (12.2 points per game) for most of the early season. Blees has just played in 2 games this year and played just one minute in C-M-S loss to Concordia last Thursday before suffering a season ending ACL tear. While the Sagehens have shot a higher percentage (42.6 percent to 41.4 percent), totaled more rebounds, assists and blocks than their 7 opponents, PomonaPitzer has struggled with ball control. The Sagehens have committed 121 total turnovers compared with just 93 from the opposition. Pomona-Pitzers oppo-

nents have also dominated the steals category with a 71-46 advantage. Pomona-Pitzer is also trying to move forward after losing Adam Chaimowitz, David Liss and Justin Sexton from last years team. The 3 players combined for an average of 41.3 points per game during the 200910 season while the team as a whole scored 65 points per contest. Both teams non-conference schedules will soon come to an end as SCIAC play will begin on January 8, 2011. On that day, C-M-S will host Occidental and Pomona-Pitzer will play at Caltech. Both games begin at 7 p.m. The Stags and Sagehens will have their first meeting this season on January 19th inside Ducey Gym at 7:30 p.m.

Daisy Wray
active church member, volunteer and board member, needlework artist
Longtime Claremont resident Daisy Wray died on December 6, 2010 from complications of a stroke she had in March 2010. Born Daisy Pearl Wentland in Bordulac, North Dakota on October 9, 1924, Mrs. Wray moved to California with her sister when she was 17. For a short time, they worked in San Francisco before joining the rest of the family in Long Beach. It was there that she met her future husband, Bob Wray. They married and settled in Pomona in May 1951. In 1959, the family moved to Claremont where Mrs. Wray resided for more than 50 years. Over the years, Mrs. Wray was an active church member, first at Trinity Methodist Church in Pomona and then at Claremont United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school. She also participated in various community Pomona Association for Retarded Children as it was known in the mid-60s, and served as PTA president for 2 years at the El Camino School in Pomona, which was part of the Los Angeles Unified School Districts Division of Special Education. Additionally, she was a founding board member of Padua Village, a nonprofit organization that established residential living facilities for developmentally disabled adults through Casa Colina Hospital. Serious illness overtook Mrs. Wray in the mid-80s, but despite severe pain, noted her family, she was always selfless, upbeat and pleasant to all. She was best known by her family and friends for her beautiful gardens and her award-winning needlework. Her kind, gentle and quietly enthusiastic ways endeared her to all whom she met and is evidenced by the legacy she leaves behind, the family expressed. Mrs. Wray is survived by her husband of 60 years, Bob Wray of Claremont; her 2 daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Frank Sours of Baltimore, Maryland and Susan and John Swarzkopf of Upland; her 3 sons and 2 daughters-in-law, Philip and Barb Wray of Upland, Scott and Amanda Wray of Everett, Washington and Alan Wray of Claremont; her 4 grandchildren, Jennifer, Matthew, Andrew and Nicholas Wray; and her sister, Fern Wernicke of Eugene, Oregon. Services for Mrs. Wray were held on December 11, 2010 at Todd Memorial Chapel, Claremont. She was interred at Oak Park Cemetery, Claremont. Barbara E. Haner
England native, geologist, librarian, traveler
Claremont resident Barbara Elizabeth Haner died at age 68 in Claremont on November 19, 2010. She was a vivacious and generous soul whose abundant life straddled her native homeland of England and her adopted one in America, Mrs. Haners family noted. Mrs. Haner was born on September 19, 1942 in Dudley, Worcestershire in England to Gladys May (Edwards) Hackett and George Frederick Hackett. In 1961, she graduated from Dudley Girls High School, going on to study geology at the University of Wales at Aberystwyth from where she graduated magna cum laude in 1964. As a North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Scholar, Mrs. Haner moved to California in 1964 to continue studying geology at the University of Southern California (USC), earning her Masters of Science degree in 1970. During this time, she met David Alan Haner, who she married in 1966. The couple had 2 daughters: Suzanne, born in 1968, and Michelle, born in 1969. The Haners settled in Claremont but frequently traveled overseas during family sabbaticals to England and France. Further pursuing her studies in geology, Mrs. Haner received her PhD from USC in 1982. After working as a university lecturer and holding various positions at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, she transitioned towards a career in library science, obtaining her masters degree in library science from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1988. From 1988-1995, she served as a science reference librarian in the Physical Sciences Library at the University of California, Riverside. In 1995, she became UCLAs earth, space and atmospheric sciences librarian at the universitys Science and Engineering Library. In addition to developing and managing collections in her disciplines, she taught classes and served on the reference desk in the library. While with UCLA, she developed a website on mines and mining resources in southern California that became very popular with on- and off-campus mining enthusiasts. Mrs. Haner also participated in numerous professional associations including the American Library Association, the Western Association of Map Librarians and the Geoscience Information Society. She retired from UCLA in 2002, allowing her and Mr. Haner to divide their time between their home in Claremont and Causeway Cottage, their home in Pencombe, England. Mrs. Haner enjoyed many interests and hobbies. In her youth, this included serving as a Girl Guide with Girlguiding UK, cycling with her father as a member of the Cyclists Touring Club and, while at the University of Wales, sailing with the University of Aberystwyth Sailing Club. She loved to read and nourished a lifelong interest in history and geography. With her husband, she shared a passion for travel and the outdoors. In recent years, they visited Alaska, New Zealand, Japan, Peru and the Canadian Rockies. During the winter, Mrs. Haner skied with family in Bear Valley and, during the summer, she hiked with former Dudley Girls High schoolmates in England. She also was an avid genealogist and local historian who savored her involvement with the Bromyard & District Local History Society. Above all, Mrs. Haner loved spending time with her friends and family, showering her children and grandchildren with love, care and attention. Mrs. Haner is survived by her husband of 44 years, David Alan Haner; her daughters, Suzanne Elizabeth Scherzinger and Michelle Alison Haner; her aunt, Margaret Elizabeth Armstrong of Stoke Lacey, Herefordshire; and by her 4 grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth Scherzinger, Elsa Page Scherzinger, Morgan Albrecht Haskell and Emily Morgan Haskell. A memorial service was held on December 5, 2010 at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, Claremont. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity or community organization of your choice.
