For whom the Bell tolls

Dear Editor: Jay Pococks recent View Point article (COURIER, November 20) criticizes Claremonts current system of trash collection. Mr. Pocock makes a few points about costs, but he does not address quality of services, and he appears to be unaware of opposing opinions within our community. This is a political issue with 2 legitimate sides. There is a need for public discussion. However, Mr. Pocock exceeds the bounds of rational debate when he implies parallels between Claremont and the infamous city of Bell. No one can deny that the larceny committed by Bell officials was profoundly unethical and immoral. But that scandal is not relevant to our local controversy about trash services. Mr. Pococks implication is irresponsible, at best. Mr. Pocock states, The city of Bell fiasco should have exposed something to all of us, that if we do not wake up now, we

shall perish by allowing these people to make decisions for us. This melodramatic rhetoric raises questions about the writers judgment and motivation. Mr. Pocock goes on to say, I hear a Bell ringing in Claremonthow about you? For many observers and listeners, the louder sound is the clamor of political innuendo which appears to signal the start of a new election cycle. Here it comes, ready or not. With unintended irony, Mr. Pocock closes by emphasizing the importance of informed voting, which is analytical, not emotional. That worthy cause is not well served by his public statements equating our city officials with criminals. Lets hope that none of the upcoming political campaigns for City Council stoop to using the Bell tactic.

Waste removal options for Claremont look solid

he public got its first glimpse of potential contracts for the future of waste removal in Claremont.

At a special meeting on Tuesday night, the Community Services Commission heard a report from city staff detailing 2 separate bids to haul Claremont's trash over the next couple of decades. Staff recommended the approval of a proposal from San Bernardino County over Republic Services in Orange County as the savings would be significant. The city currently contracts with Republic Services with a tipping fee of $28.06. The company proposed a 25-year contract with the city with tipping fees at $24.95 a ton and waste going to 2 different landfills. The first landfill would be the Olinda Alpha Landfill in Brea for the first 5 and a half years. The second would be Sunshine Canyon Landfill in Sylmar where Claremont trash would go for the remaining 19 and a half years of the contract. San Bernardino County proposed a 20-year contract for service to the Mid-Valley Landfill in Rialto with tip-

ping fees at $26.75 per ton. Since the Rialto landfill is much closer to Claremont, staff estimates that there would be 314,000 less miles driven to haul waste over the next 10 years if the San Bernardino County contract was chosen. The lower travel time would translate to $325,652 in savings, even though the San Bernardino County contract has slightly higher tipping fees than those proposed by Republic Services. Residents and commissioners complained that the city did not go through an official Request for Proposals process to come up with the proposals. These agreements are based on telephone calls and personal exchanges between staff, Commission Muriel OBrien said. We need to follow the rules that are established, and we need an explanation as to why they are not. Community Services Director Pat Malloy said the city is allowed to negotiate these types of contracts without going through a competitive bidding process. The commission voted 4 to 2 in favor of the staff recommendation. The city council will need to approve the

agreement before it goes into effect. The city is also considering a 20-year contract for green waste removal with Recycled Wood Products in Pomona. The city currently has a month-to-month agreement with Recycled Wood Products but doesn't have a long term contract. As part of the proposed agreement, the city negotiated a 21 percent reduction in tipping fees, from the current rate of $26.50 per ton to $21 per ton. The lower tipping fees could save the city approximately $41,000 per year. Again the question was raised by residents and commissioners as to why the city did not go through an RFP process to come up with different bids for the service. The contract with Recycled Wood Products has low tipping fees and the roundtrip distance is only 11.46 miles, he said. Its the cheapest around and the shortest distance which reduces our carbon footprint, Mr. Malloy said. If approved by the city council, the contract with Recycled Wood Products would begin January 1, 2011.

police blotter
Woman suspected of being involved with over 100 identity thefts
On Monday, November 29 police arrested a women suspected of involvement in identity theft activity with over 100 victims stretching throughout the Inland Valley and Orange County. At 6 p.m., police conducted a traffic stop near Towne and Bonita avenues. The driver, Zeth Verdon, 46, of Pomona was arrested for driving on a suspended license. A passenger in the vehicle, Valarie Soto, 25, of Pomona was arrested for possession of a stolen driver license. A second passenger, Jennifer Turnquist, 32, of Pomona initially identified herself using a name that was later determined to be that of an identity theft victim in Fontana. Police found in her possession several fraudulent credit cards and checks from victims residing in Fontana. During subsequent follow-up, police determined that Ms. Turnquist was living at the Rodeway Inn at 310 E. Foothill Blvd. in Pomona. She had registered for the room using a stolen driver license from a victim in San Bernardino. During a search of the room, police uncovered over 15 stolen driver licenses, several social security cards, stolen mail and personal identifying information from at least 100 victims. Police believe the belongings and information were acquired through mail theft, thefts from vehicles and even theft from acquaintances. The identity theft victims reside in communities throughout the region, including Claremont, Pomona, San Bernardino, Fontana, Montclair, Anaheim, Santa Ana and Oceanside. Detectives are in the process of attempting to locate and contact all the victims. Ms. Turnquist is being held at Claremont Police Department jail on $45,000 bail. Ms. Soto is in custody at Century Regional Facility in Lynwood on $20,000 bail. Ms. Verdon is being held at the Los Angeles County Sheriffs Inmate Reception Center on $20,000 bail. Their arraignments are scheduled for December 1 at the Pomona courthouse.

Thursday, November 25 A Montclair man was arrested after witnesses saw him trying to break into a vehicle. At 10:15 a.m., the man was seen looking into car windows in the parking lot at 315 N. Indian Hill Blvd. The man picked up a piece of asphalt and threw it at a vehicles passenger window. The window did not break and the suspect failed to enter the car. Police were called as one of the witnesses chased the suspect. The suspect fled west toward Our Lady of the Assumption and hid inside the church. Police arrived at the scene and arrested Jami Tran, 22, on suspicion of auto burglary. In interviews with police, Mr. Tran denied any wrongdoing. Friday, November 26 A woman was arrested for outstanding warrants after she walked into the Claremont Police Department lobby and asked to use the telephone. The woman, 32-year-old Amy Berry of Claremont, appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance. Police tested her and determined that Ms. Berry was not under the influence but was arrested for the warrants anyway. Tuesday, November 30 Two homes were burglarized. Between noon and 3:30 p.m., a home in the 4000 block of Las Casas Avenue was broken into through a rear locked door. The burglar used an unknown tool to pry open the door. Three watches, a television and currency were stolen. The goods had a total value of $2,500. There were no witnesses. Between 9 a.m. and 10 p.m., another home

was entered in the 500 block of Sycamore Avenue. The burglar forced open the front door and stole 2 televisions valued at $600. A neighbor told police a young woman earlier knocked on her door saying she was looking for her lost dog. The neighbor did not recognize the woman and thought it was suspicious. The woman is described as a black female, 20, with shoulder length dark hair. Police are looking for the woman to determine whether she is related to the burglary. *** A man was arrested after attempting to flee from an officer in his vehicle. At 8:40 p.m., an officer attempted to stop a suspected hit and run vehicle on Indian Hill Boulevard and San Jose Avenue. The vehicle didnt immediately pull over and instead headed west on the 10 Freeway. The driver pulled off the freeway at Towne Avenue. The vehicle temporarily stopped on the Towne Avenue off-ramp where the driver threw a stolen 22-caliber handgun out of the drivers window. The vehicle then fled at a high rate of speed. A pursuit ensured. The vehicle made its way to San Bernardino Road where the driver lost control of the car. While attempting to make a left turn onto Cordova Avenue, the driver crashed the vehicle into an apartment building. The driver, Darlan Gatson, 34, of Pomona was apprehended at the scene of the crash for evading police, receiving stolen property and violating his parole. Mr. Garson is currently being held at the Claremont Police Department jail without bail. He sustained only minor injuries during the crash.

Artistic flare gets notice for Chaparral second grader

haparral Elementary School 2nd grader Ashley Park is now one step closer to possibly becoming a grand prizewinner in the 31st Annual Los Angeles Country Library Bookmark Contest.
The semifinalist announcement was made 2 weeks ago with the grand prizewinners to be announced in February 2011. Ashley was thrilled to be one of the contestants contacted. I was excited when I found out, the 7year-old said. This is my first contest. The L.A. County Library holds its bookmark contest annually in order to provide kindergarten through 12th graders with the opportunity to show their enthusiasm of reading through art. The contest gives grand prizes among 4 age groups and uses the winning designs to create several series of bookmarks. Ashleys bookmark was entered in October to meet the October 23rd deadline. Her entry consists of block letters spelling out Library vertically and was accompanied by illustrations on how to preserve the environment. My mom got a piece of paper and told me about it and so I drew a picture for the bookmark, Ashley explained. I decorated it with things to save the worldthings like not keeping the water going when youre not using it. I tried [to draw] other bookmarks too but I picked the one I did because it was more fun. With the other ones, they were too hard to draw. Ashley started attending Chaparral this fall. The 2nd grader said she has enjoyed her new school so far and even received a Trimester Assembly Award earlier this week for her strong academic achievement over the past 3 months. When talking about a balanced child, she [Ashley] defines it, said Principal Lori

Kerns. Shes a nice addition to our school family and I am privileged to have all these great kids at this school. Whether its drawing or painting, Ashley lights up when talking about her art interests. She said she began drawing by emulating what she saw her brother do. At first, I started copying my brother and then I started to draw my own pictures, Ashley said. I like drawing people and I like drawing nature, like plants, the sun and the clouds. Though Ashley can sometimes express her artistic talents at school, she relishes being able to create drawings and paintings at home. Her mother works professionally as a designer. According to the 7-year-old, art is what she prefers to do for leisure whenever she has free time. At home, I do it a lot, Ashley said. I dont watch much TV during the week. I only watch it on Saturdays when my favorite movie is on. One of Ashleys inspirations is Vincent Van Goghs 1889 piece The Starry Night. The piece was conceived when the famous painter was in an asylum at Saint-Remy-de-Provence in southern France. The depiction of a night sky with swirling clouds and blazing stars above a town with a massive dark structure is one of the painters most popular works. Ashley enjoys it due to the variety of patterns and shapes. It has so many designs on it, she said. Its my favorite painting.

New ordinance aims to control restaurant grease disposal

Newman-Gonchar Gancheva On September 5, 2010, Andy Newman-Gonchar

and Gina Gancheva were married at Overlook Lodge, Bear Mountain State Park, New York. The ceremony, officiated by Reverend Jim Bridges, united the son of Ann Bingham Newman and Arthur Gonchar of Claremont, and the daughter of Dimiter and Velika Ganchev of East Brunswick, New Jersey. The ceremony took place on the forested Overlook Mountain Terrace, high above Hessian Lake and the Hudson River Valley. Wearing a trumpeted gown of ivory silk organza and crystal beading, the bride carried a bouquet of hydrangea, giant garden roses and ivory dahlias. In support of the bride as matron of honor was Anna Celenti Kascscak of Hazlet, New Jersey, and the maid of honor was Jessica Sharron of Sherman Oaks. Bridesmaids were Karin Ward, Stephanie Heishman and Becky Newman-Gonchar, sister of the groom. The bridal party wore plum-colored dresses by Belsoie. Gabriella Generelli and Isabella Haedo, second cousins of the bride, joined the wedding party as flower girls. The groom and groomsmen wore black tuxedos with plum silk ties. Standing with the groom as best man was his brother, Jonathan Newman-Gonchar. Groomsmen were Cruz Medina, Chris Mittino (both former Claremont residents), Ocean Dalton and Cvetan Ganchev, brother of the bride. Joseph Generelli and Alexander Haedo, second cousins of the bride, joined the wedding party as ring bearers. The celebration began with a family-style rehearsal dinner on September 4 at Lil' Frankies in New York City, where festivities were accompanied by an opera singer and classical guitarist, Marc Schriner. After the dinner, guests enjoyed a train ride to Bear Mountain State Park for the weekend. Following the wedding ceremony, a reception was held at Overlook Lodge, complete with a live band during cocktails, a 4-course gourmet dinner, a magician, a balloon artist and a photography booth. Guests danced throughout the evening to tunes spun by a DJ and music performed by a live Macedonian band, a nod to the brides heritage. After the reception, the newlyweds spent 2 weeks on a honeymoon in Spain. Mr. Newman-Gonchar graduated from Claremont High School after which he earned a Bachelors of Science in engineering from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado and a Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, DC. He is currently employed at Richards, Kibbe & Orbe in New York City. Ms. Gancheva graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in political science and Spanish, followed by completion of an MBA in marketing and global business at Rutgers Business School. She is employed by Church and Dwight in Princeton, New Jersey. The couple resides in Hoboken, New Jersey.

laremont has passed a new ordinance that attempts to deter restaurants from dumping fats, oil and grease (FOG) into the sewer system. The state Water Resources Board has mandated the city institute the new law.

Most of the food establishments in town subject to the new law already dispose of grease and other fatbased waste properly, said Stacey Neimeyer, Management Analyst for the Community Services Department. However, a handful of restaurants will need to install grease guard devices after problems have been identified in nearby sewer lines. When fats, oils and grease are dumped into the sewer, they collect on the main sewer lines and harden. FOG buildup can restrict the flow of wastewater and lead to spills in the sewers, resulting in public and environmental health concerns. To an extreme, it can restrict access through the entire system causing overflows through our manholes, Ms. Neimeyer said. There are 3 phases of the FOG program. First the city will maintain a database about each food vendor in town, including information on kitchen equipment, plumbing fixtures and drains, grease removal equipment, spill prevention, clean-up practices and a description of current grease disposal practices. The city will develop a set of Best Management Practices guidelines for restaurants to properly dispose of grease and keep it out of the sewer system. Businesses that fail to keep FOG out of the sewer lines through the guidelines will be required to install grease

control devices such as interceptors or grease traps. Grease control devices can cost up to $3,000 to install, said Mayor Pro Tem Sam Pedroza. He suggested that the city offer assistance to affected businesses that need to purchase the machinery through its business loan program. The devices will be monitored on an annual basis to ensure they are functioning properly. Businesses caught violating the ordinance will be subject to hefty fines of up to $500. They will also be charged for sewer cleanup costs and are required to pay any fines the city receives for not complying with state standards. We really do believe that most of the businesses within the community will not be significantly affected by this ordinance, Ms. Neimeyer said. At this point, were really thinking only 5 businesses may have a problem that requires follow-up. Food facilities that only engage in reheating, hot holding or assembly of ready-to-eat food are not subject to the ordinance. Many Claremont food facilities such as ice cream, sandwich and juice shops will not be affected by the ordinance. Those are not large generators of grease, Ms. Neimeyer said. There are about 115 food businesses in Claremont. Out of those, city staff estimates about 80 will affected by the FOG ordinance. The city already has regulations on the books since 1990 barring the release of oils, fats, greases and tallow by private residences into the sewer system. But nearly all sewer blockages due to FOG build-up come from food vendors. Tony Krickl

Carlton Seaver: One of the few to make money during the boom
bu Judy Wright

hristmas 1887, the first in the new boom town called Claremont, was lonely for the few residents and land speculators who hoped the town would be a successful venture along the new Santa Fe route to and from Los Angeles. The first sale of Claremont lots had taken place on April 7, 1887, during the height of the land boom.
Over 300 lots were sold, though most were only paper sales. Later, during the Christmas season, newspapers reported that land salesman William Holabird, who had sold Claremont, was now busy selling Santa Ana, Capistrano, and Coronado. Lordsburg (La Verne), San Dimas, Glendora, and Magnolia Villa (Upland) continued to advertise their town sites in the Los Angeles and Pomona papers; but, even though another land auction was scheduled for January, there was little space devoted to the selling of Claremont. The one exception to this decrease of sales activity was the selling of the Carlton Seaver tract, actually west of the original Claremont town site between the old Rancho San Jose Road, called Grant Street (now Harrison), Indian Hill, Mountain, and and Tenth Street. It largely encompasses the area we now call Old Claremont and for those of us who live in this area, the Carlton Seaver Tract is still found on our deeds. Mr. Seaver wrote an essay about this area that asked the question, Would You Know Why I Am A Californian? His principal reasons were: that I may accumulate wealth more rapidly...that I may escape the rigors of eastern weather in a land, of perpetual sunshine. With cold and invigorating trade winds in the summer and free from frost and fogs in the winter. Where can I find a place where all three conditions exist? An orange

grove property planted and cared for will, when eight years old, pay a good rate of interest on $1,000 to $4,000 per acre. The conditions for successful culture are: freedom from frosts that will injure the fruit or twig, comparative freedom from fogs or other moisture that enables scale or other pests to take hold, dry, warm spells such as found along the base of the mountains from Duarte to the west and Cajon Pass on the east. The high mountains to the north serving as a protection against north winds while the tempered trade winds of the summer are unobstructed by hills on the south. Perhaps, he hadnt experienced a Santa Ana wind yet! Mr. Seaver profited from the sales of land in this tract, although not for residential development. Most of the land was sold for citrus ranches and it took until the 1920s to the 1960s for all the area to be developed. Carlton Seaver, the patriarch of four generations of the family so prominent at Pomona College and many other Los Angeles institutions, such as the Los Angeles Opera, USC, Pepperdine, and the Museum of Natural History, was born in Rochester, New York the son of B.E. and Mary (Pryor) Seaver. He was educated in the public schools in Rochester. While still a young man, about 1870, Mr. Seaver became employed in the mercantile and banking business at Traer, Iowa. In 1884, after marrying Iowan,

Mary Samuels, he settled in Pomona, purchased land, and planted a citrus orchard. In 1885, he joined the Pomona Valley Bank as president and in 1886 he converted that bank into The First National Bank, continuing as president. That institution helped to develop Pomona Valley. Mr. Seavers bank was in direct competition with Claremont founder, Henry Palmers Pomona Bank. Mr. Palmers bank failed after too many bad investments during the boom of 1887. Mr. Seavers bank went on to make plenty of money, even during the boom, and helped to lay a safe foundation for the future of Pomona Valley. In 1898, Mr. Seaver resigned from the bank and devoted time to his philanthropic, business, Carlton Seaver and family affairs. Both Mr. and Mrs. Seaver were very proud that all 6 of their children graduated from Pomona College. It was after he resigned from the bank that Carlton Seaver built the Seaver House on Holt Boulevard close to Garey Avenue in Pomona. At that time the avenue was mainly residential, grand residential. As the street deteriorated, the Seaver family donated the house to Pomona College in 1979 and it was moved to Claremont in the middle of the night in 3 separate pieces to the site where the Craftsman Claremont Inn once stood. This lovely Greek Revival structure was put back together and now serves as the alumni office for Pomona College.

Hes searching for his roots. He might do better on a computer.

Using common sense

Dear Editor: Interesting letter to the editor in the Wednesday December 1st COURIER which equated second hand smoke with murder, rape, child molestation and spousal abuse. Is this truly where this debate has gone? Second hand smoke is the same as rape and murder? Get a grip. The writer was looking for the freedoms that are infringed upon by regulation of smoking, and I have a response: The Ninth Amendment. Rights not given to the government are possessed by the people, that's us. It is not a radical idea; it is what the Constitution intended. Nowhere in the enumerated powers of Congress do I see a grant of power to regulate tobacco. While there are many powers which the government has taken for the sake of safety, does no one see the insane effort to keep us safe as overreaching what government should be doing? Claremont and state and county government cannot afford to perform its basic functions along with police and fire services because of all of the secondary and tertiary things they now do and must fund, and now they want to regulate second hand smoke, with the attendant costs of enforcement, signage and the sheer annoyance of another regulation we all must obey. I dont smoke. I dont like to smell others cigarettes and tobacco products away from my home. Do I want a law about it?

readers comments
No. Smokers, if you want to retain your ability to smoke in public places, you should be acting responsibly and respectfully toward others. Leaving cigarette butts behind, tossing them out of car windows, and lighting up within close proximity to others is not being a good neighbor. Abuse that right and others in Claremont will come along and call you a murderer or a rapist in order to ban your guilty pleasure and control you. Those are the rights that Mr. Calaycay and Mr. Yao were seeking to protect. This is not just about tobacco. What happens when the noise of children playing outside starts to annoy people who like the peace and quiet of a public park? Allowing others to invade the public rights associated with public spaces is a slippery slope indeed. We need to respect each other. not pass laws to control one another. I dont need 13 paragraphs railing against smoking outside to know smoke is not safe, but I also do not want my government regulating ever more silly things under the guise of safety. After all, loud squeals of delight from children can affect hearing. Living is dangerous. I intend to do more of it, assuming the signs warning of what I cannot do in a public park do not get so long they take 10 minutes to read and written waiver before I am allowed in...we need more common sense and fewer laws.
Joe Farrell Claremont

Using common sense

Dear Editor: This week found a Congressman from Utah proposing a Constitutional Amendment that would allow for states to nullify a federal law, if enough states did not like the law. We have seen efforts at nullification before, especially when slavery was a way of life in the old Confederacy. This new trend is ominous for the health of our Republic and our nation. The principle behind Lincolns House Divided Speech still remains true. A House divided against itself cannot stand. Perhaps the gentleman from Utah would like to bring back polygamy. I say this only slightly in jest. The point is our original Articles of Confederation failed because it was too decentralized. It failed to promote commerce, the states failed to promote sufficient prosperity for the people and it did not provide for the common defense. The members of the Tea Party and libertarians live under the misconception that a federal government is evil and is unnecessary. They believe that man can self govern their behavior. The truth is that man needs law and government to manage greed and bad behavior. If each state were left to do what they wanted, you would have 50 states with 50 different rule sets, and basically the nation would no longer exist.

We would all benefit by a re-reading of the Constitution where once in the preamble and once again in the Necessary and Proper Clause, it states that the responsibility of Congress is to provide and promote the general welfare of the people. It does not say some of the people. Today our very nation is at risk due to partisanship or what Madison called factionalism. He warned that Republics in the past had faded away and were destroyed due to factionalism. I am afraid that we are witnessing the beginnings of the demise of our great country due to the self interest of some to do anything for political gain while the nation is torn further and further apart by fear and selfishness.

Noise and culture

Dear Editor: Evaggelos Vallianatos recent View Point article, The leaf-blowing plague contained a glaring misrepresentation concerning the children of Oakland. Citing a quote from a Berkeley psychiatrist, he said these unfortunate kids were so educationally traumatized by leaf blower noise that they grew up saying things like Can I ax you a question? His conclusion is totally at odds with reality. Having worked in a black community in the northern midwest 35 years ago, the term ax was used on a regular basis as part of their culture in a community in which leaf blowers were unknown. I suppose Mr. Vallianatos could argue it was possible the terms origin there had something to do with the tremendous noise caused by the incessant drumbeat of passing snow plows.

Annabel Teberg Spencer

physician, neonatology specialist, traveler
Former Claremont resident and retired physician Annabel Teberg Spencer, most recently of Upland, died on November 25, 2010 at age 84. Born in Saint Paul, Minnesota on February 25, 2010, Dr. Teberg was the second of 4 children born to Lawrence and Annabel Teberg. She spent summers on the family farm in Minneiska, and when her family moved to an 80-acre farm on Medicine Lake in 1940, she became active in 4H, showing her cows at the Minnesota State Fair. She and her brother, Jack, were grand champions at the state fair for their puppet show. Following her 1944 graduation as valedictorian of John Marshall High School, Dr. Teberg attended the University of Minnesota where she studied premedicine and was active in the Delta Gamma Sorority. She continued on to medical school at the University of Minnesota where she met fellow medical student, Lorin Spencer, who had returned from service in World War II. Both Dr. Teberg and Dr. Spencer interned in California before marrying on July 19, 1952 at St. Marys of the Lake near the Teberg home in Medicine Lake, Minnesota. Over the next decade Dr. Teberg gave birth to 7 children, completed a residency in pediatrics at the University of California, Los Angeles, became chief resident at UCLA, worked at Kaiser Hospital and moved 6 times. She was always a woman on the move! noted her son, Daniel Spencer. From 1957 to 1962, Dr. Teberg lived with her growing family on North Mountain Avenue in Claremont. In 1962, they moved to a big orange grove house on Euclid Avenue in Upland that became the Spencer house for nearly 40 years. From there, Dr. Teberg developed a distinguished career in pediatrics and neonatology in the Los Angeles County Health System while raising a large family. In 1963, the Casa Colina Preschool for handicapped children opened with Dr. Teberg as the pediatrician. With a primary interest in child development, she established several Well Baby Clinics and Premature Baby Clinics throughout Los Angeles County and started the Premature Follow-Up Program in 1964 that continues today. During the 70s, Dr. Teberg served as chief physician of the Pomona Health District and regional chief of pediatrics and medical director of San Gabriel Valley Health Services. She also directed the Casa Colina Clinic for the Multi-Handicapped and worked at the Baxter Medical Center Student Health Services at the Claremont Colleges. In the 80s, she served as director of the campers throughout the Southwest and instilled a love of the outdoors in their children through many camping adventures. The highlight of each year was summertime spent at a cabin at Medicine Lake near Mt. Shasta where Dr. Teberg took the children, family pets and many additional friends for several weeks of fun and relaxation. In retirement, Dr. Teberg and her husband also enjoyed traveling internationally and took particular delight in visiting their 9 grandchildren. Dr. Teberg is survived by her husband, Lorin Spencer of Upland; by 6 children, Suzanna Cuneo and her husband Peder Cuneo of Tucson, Arizona, Lucinda Spencer of Lafayette, Colorado, Daniel Spencer and his partner Pat Burke of Missoula, Montana, Martha Spencer and her husband Eric Nelson of Hydesville, Stuart Spencer and his wife Patty of Seattle, Washington and Amanda Spencer and her husband Jamie Abitz of Portland, Oregon; and by her 9 grandchildren, Matthew Cuneo, Sara Cuneo, Laurel Nelson, Jenay Nelson, Katy Spencer, Sydney Abitz, Spencer Abitz, Kyle Burke and Laurel Burke. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sara, in 1957. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, December 4, 2010 at St. Anthony Catholic Church, 2110 N. San Antonio Ave., Upland. Burial will follow at Oak Park Cemetery, Claremont. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center Foundation, 1798 N. Mary Louise Hunter

Moral Re-Armament peace-builder, community volunteer, Claremont Colleges retiree
Claremont resident Mary Louise (Merrell) Hunter died in her sleep at Pilgrim Place on November 23, 2010, after a good day, said her son, Bill Hunter. Born on May 4, 1916, Mrs. Hunter grew up in Indianapolis, Indiana. An excellent student, she graduated first in her class at Shortridge High School in Indianapolis. After a preparatory year at De Pauw University in Indiana, she attended Vassar College from where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa in 1938. An avid tennis player, Mrs. Hunter was one of Vassars top competitors in the sport. Having played tennis since childhood, she continued playing well into her 80s. Toward the end of her college years, Mrs. Hunter was introduced to the international movement, Moral Re-Armament (MRA), and joined the full-time team for the next 2 decades. During those 20 years, she traveled in support of MRAs evangelical and peace-building mission. It was a time when young people wanted to do something, and this felt like an effective way of doing our part in changing the world, Mrs. Hunter told the COURIER last year. Mrs. Hunter took a break from MRA activities during the 1940 presidential campaign to serve as personal secretary to the wife of Wendell Wilkie, the Republican Party nominee. During Mrs. Hunters time with MRA, she met T. Willard Hunter, a pastor, orator and author best known locally for his July 4th speeches in Memorial Park. On August 22, 1945 they were married. Shortly thereafter, Mrs. Hunter had 3 sons and settled into her role as homemaker while Mr. Hunter traveled internationally with MRA. From 1952 to 1956, the Hunters lived on the smalland automobile-free Mackinac Island in northern Michigan. When Mr. Hunter left MRA to begin working in administration at Macalester College in Minnesota, the family moved to Minneapolis. In 1959, they moved to Claremont after Mr. Hunter accepted a position with the Claremont University Center and Claremont Graduate School (now University). All 3 sons graduated from Claremont High School. After the youngest son graduated, they moved to New Hampshire where Mrs. Hunter went to work in the continuing education department of the University of New Hampshire in Durham and Mr. Hunter attended seminary. They returned to Claremont in 1977, at which time Mrs. Hunter became a key part of the personnel department at the Claremont Colleges. In 1986, the couple of emotion, but rather was the rock and glue for our family and her friends through good times and lifes tragedies. Mrs. Hunter is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Willard Bill and Sharon; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Lee, and Edward and Peg; her brother-in-law, Stuart, and his wife, Betty; her sister-in-law, Helen McGee, and her husband, Frank; her daughter-in-law, Gwen Hunter; her former daughter-inlaw, Nonae Sears; her grandchildren, Aeden Hunter and his longtime girlfriend, Morgan, Irene Hunter, Laurel Anderson and her husband, Adam, Clayton Hunter and Casey ODay; and by numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willard, in 2009; her son, Robert, in 1971; her son, Thomas, in 2008; and her granddaughter, Nina Louise, in 1984. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, December 10, 2010 at Claremont United Church of Christ, Congregational. Memorial donations may be made to the League of Women Voters of the Claremont Area, PO Box 1532, Claremont CA 91711; or to Pilgrim Place, 660 Avery Rd., Claremont, CA 91711.

moved to Pilgrim Place. In her retirement years, Mrs. Hunter remained active in the League of Women Voters, the Claremont United Church of Christ, the Inland Council of Churches and as a member of numerous committees at Pilgrim Place. Our mom was smart, thoughtful, steadfast, reliable and true, said her son, Bill. She was not given to overt displays

COURIER photo/Steven Felschundneff Principal Christine Malally does the chicken dance with some of her students during recess on Tuesday at Condit Elementary School. Ms. Malally dressed as a chicken to fulfill a promise she made to the students to reward them for reaching their goal on the standardized tests.

Condit finds a fun way to recognize milestone

ondit Elementary School found 2 ways to properly recognize its Academic Performance Index (API) score of 919 on Wednesdayhold a schoolwide celebration and have Principal Christine Malally dress up in a chicken suit.

The Condit Rocked the STAR Test BBQ & Celebration brought together Condit students, teachers, parents and even Condit alumni who are now 7th graders at El Roble Intermediate School. But the highlight was Ms. Malally making good on a promise she made to the students during the 2009-10 school year. They have wanted me to wear the chicken suit for a while, the Condit principal said. When we didnt

meet our [fundraising] goal for our Spell-A-Thon last year, I thought, why not do it if we reach a 900 API score? Our school had come together with the goal of getting 900. Im very proud of the kids and the staff for all of their hard work.

TOPLEFT: Tara Tisopulos shares a photo of her daughter Melina Tisopulos, 5, and Ms. Malally on Tuesday at Condit Elementary School. Melina was the third person to have a photo taken with Ms. Malally during a noontime party at the school. LEFT: Ms. Malally shares a laugh with some of her staff before the start of the celebration.

PLAYING CHICKEN continued from the previous page

hroughout the extended lunch period, students, parents and teachers were able to have a picture with Ms. Malally in her chicken costume for $2. The proceeds from the pictures will go towards new computers for the schools computer lab. Whether students posed for pictures with their principal or passed her by while walking to the benches, the costume provided endless entertainment on campus. Along with giggles, some of the remarks students made included I want to eat the chicken, Youre the cutest chicken Ive seen and Hi principal chicken. Towards the end of the event, Ms. Malally led students, teachers and parents in a chicken dance to the delight and laughter of many. Its always fun to see the principal in a chicken suit, said Condit Student Council vice president Jake Gentry said. Plus, its kind of nice to be able to celebrate like this since we reached our goal. Parent-Faculty Association Co-President Kim Patterson is thrilled about the schools performance and joyfully took part in Wednesdays event. Its all about her [Malally] and her staff, Ms. Patterson said. The staff is extremely happy and were so glad to have her [Malally]. Condit grew from an 891 API base score at the start of the 2009-10 school year to a 919 API growth score by years end. The school not only met all of its Academic Yearly Progress requirements

among all of its significant subgroups (Hispanic-Latino, white, socioeconomically disadvantaged) but also featured gains in both English-language arts and mathematics by at least 5.3 percent per group. First grade teacher Sara Loeffler believes developing goals and deeper collaboration helped lead to the schools significant jump. I think its huge that she [Malally] met with the kids to set goals and we continually met together as a staff, Ms. Loeffler explained. The entire school was collaborating. I think Ms. Malally also did a great job in making the kids aware of what the test means and that the kids have the power to do better. That was their goal. According to 4th grader Sarah Ayala, the school is capable of even greater achievements for the current school year. We did really good on the STAR testing, the student council treasurer said. But I think we can do better this year and that we can do more. El Roble 7th grader Walker Goss spent the previous 7 years at Condit and was part of the schools improvement in test results last year. He was honored to be one of many Condit Condors invited back to take part in the special event. I thought that this was nice and it is neat to come back, Walker said. When I found out we had done so well, I felt excited about what my classmates and I accomplished.

THE PETITION requests the decedents will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A HEARING on the petition will be held on January 5, 2011 at 8:30 AM in Dept. No. 9 located at 111 N. Hill St., Los Angeles, CA 90012. IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the deceased, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within four months from the date of first issuance of letters as provided in Probate Code section 9100. The time for filing claims will not expire before four months from the hearing date noticed above. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court.
