120M memory (probably 128M). Flash Memory Size: 45MB? (Unconfirmed). Telnet Access: The device has telnet access. You can find the IP address of the device from Setup->NET->Wired LAN Setup (or Wireless LAN setup, if you use a compatible USB wireless LAN adaptor). Username: root (the device should not prompt you for a password) Main Player Software: DvdPlayer - DvdPlayer is the main execution program the RTD1073 runs to enable everything from display, infra-red control, enable service, install application to control video and audio playback. Other bits and pieces: - The device's OS is basically linux 2.6.12.6. Distribution is BusyBox (hm....). - When the NAS function is enabled, the devices run samba 3.0.23c. - There are other devices based on the same chip, but they all seemed to be customised differently. Some other devices have features that AP-300 (Astone) has yet to implement. Other related Astone products: - AP-110D: Based on the same chipset (RTD1073DD) except without the internal SATA port / internal SATA drive. - AP-100: Based on a slightly older revision of the chipset (RTD1073AD), also no internal SATA capability. The earlier revision of the chipset (AD) lacks the capapbility to downsample DTS Master HD. It is no longer available. You should get AP-110D. - AP-200: Based on the same chipset (RTD1073DD) except it has an internal SATA port for a 2.5 inch drive. - AP-360T: Uses RTD1283 (not sure about the revision). It has more features, most noticably the ability to received DVB-T (digital TV) and record TV programs and videos. Most likely uses a different version of Dvdplayer with more features. Various Astone Firmware Releases (for AP-300): Firmware 1.75 - Probably the most popular firmware release (at the time of writing - e.g. June 2010). Originally designed to fix compatibility issues with Sony LCD TVs. Unfortunately, like rest of the firmware 1.7 series, it has the infamous file loss problem (exact cause is not known). Firmware 1.8 - The firmware is not well received. A wireless network bug (power cycle the box will revert the network setting back to wired network on / wireless off) is annoying to users using the wireless adaptor. It introduces USB BD-ROM support and improves playback of most files (though some users report issues with certain file formats). If you don't use wireless LAN with AP-300, 1.8 is worth considering. Firmware 1.9 beta 2 - Fixed the wireless LAN issue in 1.8. Fixed the power button problem in 1.9 beta 1. Sometimes referred to as 1.9.2. Currently being tested. Subtitle issue still not fixed (after turning off subtitle, fast forward seems to reset the setting to subtitle 1). If you are interested in firmware 1.9 beta testing, it is best to test beta 2. Beta 1 (see below) has more issues. Firmware 1.9 beta (1) - The firmware is designed to correct bugs in 1.8 and various issues with the bitTorrent client (now you can turn it off if you want). Currently being tested by people. Issues reported so far: unable to turn the device back on using the power button on the device has been reported (need to use the remote), occasional problem turning off the device, subtitle issues (forget subtitle settings after fast forward/rewind, problem with font size change) and it appears the infamous file loss problem

has not been fixed. Firmware 1.6 - Really old one. Avoid it if you have a hard drive > 500GB. It is quite old. Firmware 1.76, 1.77, 1.78 - Newer AP-300s come with these by default. Probably because 1.8 is not stable enough. More or less like 1.75. Wishes: - Astone to make firmware downloads easier (have dedicated download pages, like most other manufacturers). - Astone to release the source code. - Would be nice if I can have another AP-300 to play around. - Given the device runs linux... and the hard drive is always mounted (and quite big)... the box has great potential... but... need to see if we can get some programs ported.
