Disordered Eating Patterns

Animoto Project Overview

Digital Story Telling: The End of Papers and PowerPoint..
The age of Digital Story Telling: A long time ago (like 5 years ago) students used to research a topic and construct a paper crafted to convey a message/po int of view, thesis type of statement and attempt to support this through conjecture and/or data. Today Digital Story Telling has taken the place of papers (please note that English class is still very important ) but has kept much of the same elements important in conveying a message and demonstrating your understanding of the topic at hand. Animoto: Animoto is a great example of a digital story telling method. It is a very cool web based program that creates stunning videos from photos, clips and music that you get to choose. If youve ever worked with other programs you know that the tedious and time consuming part is the editing and graphic design features. Animoto does much of this work for you by taking your chosen material and automatically producing film that looks like you spent hours on the computer. However Animoto will not put your information together in a way that demonstrates you understand it! Elements of Your Digital Video You Need to Plan for: Constructing a message is not as simple as it sounds. I would argue that producing a digital story is just as hard if not harder than writing a paper. At least with writing a paper you dont have YouTube and Google to distract you. The Center for Digital Storytelling has defined certain elements for creating effective and interesting multimedia stories. These elements force you to consider how you will go about the planning and implementing of your presentation and in many ways demonstrate whether you truly understand the topic versus just plopped a bunch of info into the program. A Point of View: The purpose of your video is to make a point and should not be presented as a recitation of mere facts. Make it clear (for most of you it is related to avoiding the disorder). A Dramatic Question: You want to capture your audiences attention at the beginning of the piece and hold their interest throughout. For this story I would guess most of you are looking at answering what the effects are. Emotional Content: Emotional content can help hold your audiences attention. The images, effects and music all lend to contributing emotions to the piece. The Soundtrack: Music is a big plus to a digital story. Music can convey emotion; changing music can evoke varying emotions. Choose carefully Economy: A compact, fast-moving story will contain only those elements necessary to move the audience from the beginning to the end.

Topic Overviews, Sign Up and Group Roles

Well watch a demonstration of an Animoto video to give you an idea of what they are.and how they work. Pay attention to -The Purpose (What is the storyteller trying to tell you?) Any Dramatic Questions? (What is the question) The Emotional Content (Did the pictures add to the emotion conveyed) The Soundtrack (How did it make you feel) -The Economy (Pay attention to how short the text is-but still gets message across). Purpose of this project is to create a video that communicates the physical, mental , emotional and social consequences that come with disordered eating patterns and related BDD/self-image and dieting issues. Presentation Topics Listed in Order of Presentation Each topic has something in the ( ). This is a mandatory topic to cover that will be included in the rubric. 1. Before We Start We Need to Talk About The Group Roles and What They Do: Tech Coordinator Role: You will only have one presentation per group. This means that only one of you will be working in Animoto. The Tech Coordinator of each group will register with the site, be responsible for all uploading of images, data and the music. They will be responsible for uploading and sharing the video and assisting with getting it on your partner(s) ePortfolios or Schoology. Researchers and Planner Role: You will be responsible for finding reliable and credible content that gets at the heart of your topic. This includes the pictures and information. Your 2 hardest jobs will be to plan out your presentation on the storyboard and be taking the information you have and making it concise for the tech coordinator. Dont just cut/paste a bunch of stuff.

Tech Coordinator Responsibilities:

Meet in the front of the room. I will pass on the log-in information to you via an email. Again only one of you will create a presentation. Go to www.animoto.com and click the sign-up button

Click the Sign Up. 1. Use your school email 2. Put your full name 3. Check your SCHOOL EMAIL for the password. Use this as your password (cut and paste).

Before you go any further you need to Upgrade your account because right now you can only make a 30 second video. Once you log in go to the drop down next to your name (little down arrow). Click Account

Scroll down and look for the redeem a promo code and paste the same password into the box and click submit.

Now You Have an Upgraded Student Account and Can Begin.

Choose a style of video (you cannot pick the ones that say pro in the corner).

Before you start creating your video I want you to title it. Look for the box in the upper left hand corner. Click on the Pencil

Title your video and use the following format Period-Last Names-Topic-Year for example a presentation from a Health class period 9 on anorexia with two students would be..9-Johnson-Smith-Anorexia-2013.

When done click produce video and let Animoto create your video (this may take awhile). Once you watch your video you may want to edit it. You may want to select speed for your image pacing. Animoto plays pretty quick. This allows your pictures to stay on the screen for a longer time. When you have the video that you like. Click the..

inside of the and Embed into Your ePortfolio!

and click on the embed video

Researcher/Planner Responsibilities
Your job is to organize your storyboard. Start simple with the questions that we discussed. How do you want to start? What is your point of view? What is the purpose of your presentation?__________________________________________________ What are three things that you need to address in the purpose? 1. 2. 3. Each box represents a slide. Organize your presentation while the Tech Coordinator is starting your presentation. Picture or Text? What should the picture be about and what should the text focus on? You are responsible for emailing the tech coordinator pictures and statistic to plug into your presentation.
