History
Edguy was founded in 1992 by 14-year-old students Tobias Sammet, Jens Ludwig, Dirk Sauer, and Dominik Storch. The name "Edguy" was an affectionate epithet for Mr. Edgar, their math teacher at the time [1]. Until 1998, when Tobias Exxel joined the band, they had no bassist; Sammet having played the bass tunes on a keyboard. After two demos they got a contract with AFM Records in 1995. Their first two albums were not very successful, but with Vain Glory Opera in 1998 they achieved a breakthrough. After another two albums they received a contract with the German label Nuclear Blast, in 2004. In 2001/2002 Tobias Sammet's released the first album of his side project Avantasia, a wide-scope metal opera including the participation of many famous musicians and achieving a fair amount of success. [edit]

Style
With their uncomplicated easygoing melodies and Sammet's high voice, Edguy is representative of typical European power metal. Their lyrics are often metaphorical, alluding to metaphysical or social themes: conformity (The Headless Game, Mysteria, King of Fools), dictation by the church (The Kingdom, Theater of Salvation), and dangers of modern civilization (Navigator, The Devil and the Savant). To express such themes, Edguy sometimes use esoteric and hermetic expressions. Yet some of their songs are light-hearted or comedic (Das Reh, Save Us Now, Lavatory Love Machine). Edguy does not claim to represent any ideology; Tobias Sammet claimed "We are not political and we are not religious; at least there is no key message in our songs telling you what to think in terms of anything". Edguy also employs lengthy and epic sections in almost every album. revealed Edguy's interest in experimenting within music by integrating an orchestra into the production. Their latest album, Rocket Ride, features less symphonic and speed metal elements, and is arguably more orientated towards hard rock.
Hellfire Club

Edguy played a surpise set with metal legends Metallica in 2004 at JB's, Dudley and toured with the well known power metal band Dragonforce in early 2006 after the release of the Inhuman Rampage album. [edit]

Biography

Edguy is a neo-classical metal band from Germany. Featuring Tobias Sammet on vocals and bass, Jens Ludwig and Dirk Sauer on guitar, and Felix Bohnke, they released their first album, Kingdom of Madness, in 1997 when all members were still in their teens. This album is good, but inconsistent. In 1998, their second album, Vain Glory Opera, took a big step forward, featuring much better and more consistent songwriting. 1999's Theater of Salvation is the band's first great album. It has consistently great songs, better vocals, and lusher production. Tobias Exxel was added on bass for the Theater of Salvation album. ~ David White, All Music Guide

6. Vain Glory Opera [music & lyrics: Tobias Sammet] The prayers have been spoken may the gods be on my side may they join my way to bring me victory seven at one stroke my triumph and my pride will be history but behind my enemies eyes a soul in disguise not only lies

We live to fight the hand of doom we got the pride to strike a fool vain glory be my wicked guide what`s hell without a paradise what`s the night without a day we would think it`s bright what`s a fall if we can`t rise what`s a hero at a play without a fool to fight but behind my enemies eyes a soul in disguise not only lies but behind my enemies eyes a soul in disguise not only lies 11. Theater Of Salvation [music & lyrics: Tobias Sammet] "I've heard voices in my dream. Made me stand up, helped me see. Aaah... Oohhh... Visions called him to awake his mind, to find his horizon and find out what may be behind. [vision:] "Take what you need, you can find in the back of your soul! Wake up the king in yourself to be mighty and bold!" Seasons of doubt, fear and silent desires of life have gone by. Visions have called back my longing for freedom tonight. Made me sigh... Wasting my life till the day that the voice has appeared... Made me see: I am the one that can make it through times of despair; I am free!" They built up a symbol of warning to give me fear, to keep me away from paradise although it's so near,

expecting I don't take a look at what is behind: Freedom calling... Take a look at the open gate! Walk on and don't be afraid! Free your mind in what they call it's the heart of temptation! ...oh... Go the way! Take a look at the open gate! Walk on and don't be afraid! Free your mind in what they call it's the heart of temptation! Night after night I remembered the word of the priest: "Thou shalt not! Never give in to the promises made by the beast, so help me god! Never give in to temptation or you'll burn in hell a long, long time! Forever-eternal-salvation is what I can sell if you stay blind!!!" But I wanna know what lies behind the gate of their hell. And I won't believe all the stories that they always tell. I got the mind to find out what is right and what's wrong. Freedom calling... Queen of mine I long for you. Tell me why to wait to find our joy! It's your wait for heaven's door, your fear that makes them grow and let you forget today. I'll never go and I'll stay on your side. They'll never know what I give to you is a piece of paradise. Heaven can wait! NOW I'm living! Heaven can wait forevermore. Heaven can wait! I am to live like I want to also before I'll die. Heaven can wait! You can't thrill me! Heaven can wait, we dance till we die! Heaven can wait! Welcome to the THEATER OF SALVATION

"Hallelujah, hallelujah!" I hear the man in black, his "Hallelujah, hallelujah!" He tries to keep me back. No! "Hallelujah, hallelujah!" Lock up the gates to wisdom Hallelujah, hallelujah... Too late! I've found the kingdom... Hallelujah, hallelujah! I see a band of angels. Hallelujah, hallelujah! Freedom calling... Hallelujah, hallelujah! I do not fear the stories. Hallelujah, hallelujah! Freedom calling me... Don't you see it? Don't you feel it? Freedom calling... (...and the vision finally added: "Go and find the answers in yourself; and always remember: 'You're already living.' Don't let them scare you on your quest for answers and for salvation for real salvation...) 12. For A Trace Life [bonus track] [Music & Lyrics: Tobias Sammet] Don't know where I come from Don't know where to go Don't know if I know What is good to be known I wonder if madness Is just a child Of my urge to know The more that I ask The more I get down A million times

My quest for life is pain But still it has not made me going insane And I long for more For a trace of life Tearing down all doors For a trace of life You tell me you wonder If wondering is heaven or hell You say that you've got the view On the dark side of life You can't see the shadows The others can see But you can see it's well: The sun and the day The light in the sky A million times Your quest for life has been pain But still it is the key to make you sane

Biography
[edit]

The beginning
The first incarnation of the band was named Force and came together on the year of 1979, in Upplands Vsby, Stockholm, and was integrated by vocalist and keyboardist Joey Tempest, guitarist John Norum, bassist Peter Olsson and drummer Tony Reno. The band sent several demos to record companies, but were told that in order to be published they had to cut their hair and sing in Swedish. Two years later, Olsson left the band and was replaced by John Levn. Just a couple of months later, Levn joined Yngwie J. Malmsteen's band Rising Force, and Malmsteen's former bassist, Marcel Jacob joined Force. This only lasted for three months, though; Levn apparently had issues with Malmsteen, so he and Jacob traded places again.

The early days... 1983 In 1982, Tempest's girlfriend entered Force in the Swedish rock talent contest RockSM. Competing against 4000 bands, they won the contest, their rewards being a record deal. Tempest won the individual award for Best Lead Singer, and Norum won the award for Best Guitarist. During the contest, Force were forced to changed their name to Europe. Their self-titled debut album was released on the following year, and sold well both in Sweden and Japan. The single "Seven Doors Hotel" became a Top 10 hit in Japan. The second album, Wings of Tomorrow was released one year later, and the single "Open Your Heart" got CBS Records interested in the band, offering them an international contract in 1985. Keyboardist Mic Michaeli was soon recruited to play in live concerts, and became an official member of the band shortly after. At the same time, Tony Reno was fired because of his lack of motivation and alleged slacking off from rehearsals. His replacement was Ian Haugland. In 1985 Europe recorded the soundtrack for youth movie On the Loose, which gave them the hit "Rock the Night". Several months later, Tempest was asked to write a song for the charity project Swedish Metal Aid. He wrote "Give A Helping Hand", which would feature the biggest stars of Swedish rock and metal. The income from the sales of the single, which was produced by Easy Action guitarist Kee Marcello, was donated to the starving people of Ethiopia. [edit]

Worldwide success

Final Countdown era photo At the end of the year they began the recording of their next album. The result was The Final Countdown, released in 1986. It became a worldwide hit, selling more than six million copies. The title track was number 1 in 26 countries, and the ballad "Carrie" reached number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the USA. Not satisfied with the album's keyboarddominated production nor the band's commercialized image, John Norum decided to leave Europe in November 1986 to pursue a solo career. Kee Marcello was asked to replace him, and after some consideration decided to join the band. The following year included successful tours through the European continent and the USA. The followup to The Final Countdown was entitled Out of This World and was released in 1988, a time when Guns N' Roses and U2 had broken the monopoly that melodic hard rock had on the music industry. The album would sell two million copies, which was considered a fiasco compared to previous sales figures. More touring followed, including an

American tour with Def Leppard and a festival gig at the National Bowl in Milton Keynes, England with Bon Jovi, Skid Row and Vixen. In September 1989, Europe did a gig at the Whisky a Go Go club in West Hollywood, California, under the pseudonym Le Baron Boys. That name would later be used as a title for a much-circulated Europe bootleg, which contained demo recordings from 1989-90. Two years later, the album Prisoners in Paradise was released, but received limited media attention due to the "boom" of the grunge movement, started by Nirvana and Pearl Jam. On New Year's Eve 1991, Europe kicked off a new tour with a show at the Tokyo Dome, in which Tesla, Thunder and Metallica also performed. Interestingly enough, the show was called "The Final Countdown". After ten years of living, recording and touring together, Europe decided to take a long break when the tour ended in 1992. Since then, Tempest, Norum and Marcello have released solo albums, while the other members have participated in several different projects and bands. [edit]

Reunions

One night only: Europe 1999 For the millennium celebrations, Europe was asked to do a concert in Stockholm on New Year's Eve. That would be their first concert with two lead guitarists, since both Norum and Marcello had accepted to play. This was not a full-time reunion, however; just a one-off event. Over the years, there were several reunion rumours, and on October 2 of 2003 it was made official: Europe announced plans for a new album and world tour. The band then switched back to the classic Final Countdown line-up, with John Norum as the only lead guitarist; Kee Marcello claimed that he was too busy with his own projects. In the summer of 2004 Europe went on a festival tour through the European continent. The concert setlists included several old classics, but also introduced the title track from their brand new album - Start from the Dark. Start from the Dark was released in late 2004, and received good reviews from music critics. Europe recently finished up a world tour and is planning to record a new album, which is expected to hit the market in 2006. [edit]

The Final Countdown

We're leaving together, But still it's farewell And maybe we'll come back, To earth, who can tell? I guess there is no one to blame We're leaving ground Will things ever be the same again? It's the final countdown... We're heading for Venus and still we stand tall Cause maybe they've seen us and welcome us all With so many light years to go and things to be found I'm sure that we'll all miss her so.

I've gone through changes I've gone through pain there's not enough reason for me to go insane I know the feeling, when it grows I'm in a rage up from my head down to my toes. You know it ain't easy Running out of thrills You know it ain't easy When you don't know what you want. Rock now, rock the night 'Til early in the morning light Rock now, rock the night You'd better believe it's right. I know my limit Just what it takes When things ain't good enough I just pull the brake Sometimes it's easy Sometimes so tough just have one thin clear I can't get enough.

Carrie
When light goes down, I see no reason For you to cry. We've been through this before In every time in every season,

God knows I've tried So please don't ask for more. Can't you see it in my eyes This might be our last goodbye Carrie, Carrie, things they change my friend Carrie, Carrie, maybe we'll meet again I read your mind, with no intentions Of being unkind, I wish I could explain It all takes time, a whole lot of patience If it's a crime, how come I feel no pain.

Emperor - s-a format in anul 1991, in Norvegia Perioada de activitate: 1991 - 2001, 2005 - prezent.

To The Welkin At Dusk". Asadar in 2001, Emporer se destrama dupa lansarea unui ultim album, intitulat "Prometheus: The

Discipline Of Fire And Demise", compus doar de Ihsahn. In prezent, Samoth si Trym fac parte din trupa Zyklon, si isi continua, astfel, cariera in sfera black/death metal, iar Ihsahn isi concentreaza atentia asupra proiectului Peccatum.

Emerson, Lake & Palmer

Emerson, Lake & Palmer - formata in anul 1970 in Bournemouth, Dorset, Anglia Perioada de activitate: 1970 - 1978. Membrii trupei: Keith Emerson - clape, Greg Lake - bass, Carl Palmer - tobe. Stiluri abordate: Progressive / Art Rock. Chiar daca in plina ascensiune, Emerson a desfiintat grupul Nice in ideea de a forma si lansa un proiect nou. In acelasi an in care Emerson a intregistrat Five Bridges Suite, in 1969, a aparut inca un disc care se numara intre realizarile de varf ale acelei perioade, albumul grupului King Crimson intitulat In The Court Of The Crimson King.

Aceasta a constituit unul din punctele forte in showurile ambelor grupuri. Prima aparitie in public a fost si primul succes.

O contragreutate a piesei Take A Pebble (in traducere: "Ia o pietricica") este compozitia lui Emerson intitulata The Three Fates (Trei destine).

Emerson, Lake And Palmer s-au afirmat foarte rapid cucerind in scurt timp o faima mondiala. Albumul a aparut la sfarsitul anului 1971, bucurandu-i

Emerson, care sare pe scena si se lupta cu orga, a devenit doar o simpla rotita in masinaria propriului show. In timp ce opiniile "pro" si "contra" privind discul cu prelucrarile dupa Musorgski erau inca in plina desfasurare, grupul si-a definitivat materialul pentru cel de-al treilea album de studio. In iulie 1972 a aparut Trilogy - titlul cu o dubla semnificatie simbolica. Daca sunteti in posesia ambelor inregistrari, ar fi interesant sa le comparati.

In iunie 1972 au intreprins primul mare turneu in Japonia, devenind, aproape instantaneu, cea mai populara formatie in Orientul Indepartat.

Daca publicul nu i-a parasit, a facut-o in schimb, critica. Brain Salad Surgery a aparut in rafturile magazinelor abia la sfarsitul anului. Pentru noul album el a compus balada Still... You Turn Me On, al carei text explica, intr-o oarecare masura, starea lui Greg.

In ciuda calitatilor reale, Brain Salad Surgery a primit mai mult cronici negative decat referinte pozitive. In aceasta atmosfera a aparut albumul lor triplu cu inregistrari din concert, intitulat Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends, Ladies And Gentlemen, care este, de fapt, un vers din textul piesei First Impression.

Works Opere, a aparaut in 1977, in perioada cand intreaga scena a rockului era inca naucita de punk. In 1978 a aparut Work Volumes II, care a trecut aproape neobeservat. In 1992 a avut loc, in sfarsit, mult asteptata reuniune, cei trei protagonisti ai acestui interesant story muzical realizand impreuna albumul Black Moon.

Avem ocazia sa auzim o reinterpretare neinsufletita a suitei Pictures At An Exhibition si o reluare neinspirata a unei exceptionale piese a lui Bob Dylan, Man In The Long Black Coat.

cucereste locul trei. Renumele si l-a castigat apoi in formula de baza a grupului King Crimson, iar maturitatea si apogeul artistic in ELP.

History

Early Evanescence - Origin promo photo Evanescence was founded by singer, pianist and songwriter Amy Lee and former lead guitarist and songwriter Ben Moody. The two met at a youth camp in Arkansas, where Moody heard Lee playing "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" by Meat Loaf on the piano.
[2]

The pair discovered they shared a love of Jimi Hendrix and Bjrk, and they began to write songs together (the first was "Solitude" by Amy Lee, followed by "Understanding" by Ben Moody, "Give Unto Me" by Amy Lee, and "My Immortal" by Ben Moody). The songs were altered lyrically and musically by Amy Lee, which is the reason for having the names of both of them in the credits for writing them. For some time they were unable to find other musicians with whom to play, and did not have the funds to pay for professional assistance, thus they were unable to play live shows. However, two songs of theirs, "Understanding" and "Give Unto Me", found their way onto local music charts, and demand for a live show increased. When the band finally made an appearance, they became one of the most popular acts in the area. They went through several names, including Childish Intentions and Stricken, before deciding on the name Evanescence (meaning to fade away or dissipate like vapor). Amy said she loves the name because it is mysterious and dark, and it puts a picture in your mind, which is what she wanted to do. [edit]

Early work and Christian controversy

Origin Their first full length demo CD, Origin (released in 2000), is relatively unknown. The band also released two EPs, which are highly sought after by collectors due to their scarcity: the self-titled Evanescence EP (1998) of which about 100 copies were made, and the Sound Asleep EP, also known as the Whisper EP (1999), limited to 50 copies. Not atypically, Origin and the EPs contain demo versions of some of the songs on their debut album Fallen. In fact, the recording of "My Immortal" found on Fallen can also be found on Origin, minus a handful of additional string accompaniments. However, Lee herself does not consider the record to be an actual album; rather, she considers it merely a bundle of demo songs (some of which she says are not done properly) that was sent to record companies[citation needed]. Only 2500 copies of this record were ever made, limiting its availability to the handful lucky enough to obtain one in the early years, or to those who are willing to pay the hundreds of dollars the discs now fetch. In response, Lee encouraged fans to download the band's older songs from the Internet during an interview.[citation needed] Not surprisingly, enterprising bootleggers have been selling fake copies of Origin, usually as a "Russian re-release," for high prices. It is highly encouraged that fans not risk money on a copy of Origin as it is likely not an original copy, nor does it benefit the band any longer. Originally considered by many to be part of the Christian rock sceneand for a short time promoted in Christian storesthe band made it clear that they did not want to be considered a Christian rock band. Shortly thereafter, Christian stores removed Evanescence from their shelves. Since then Lee has been quoted as saying that they are not a Christian band and would appreciate it if the rumor was terminated. [3] David Hodges (ex-vocalist & keyboards) left the band over the Christianity topic. The band later said that he was pulling the band in more of a Christian direction than the founding members (Lee & Moody) were comfortable with. Though Amy Lee herself is not Christian, Ben Moody has always had strong religious beliefs[3] but agreed that the band did not set out to be a Christian band. [edit]

Fallen and Ben's departure

Fallen- Their 6x Platinum debut album Their first major album Fallen has been certified 6x Platinum[4] , spent 43 weeks in the Billboard Top 10 and has sold over 14 million [1] copies worldwide. As of April 2005 Fallen is one of only eight albums in the history of the chart to spend a full year (52 weeks) in the Billboard Top 50 (Spice by the Spice Girls, E. 1999 Eternal by Bone Thugs N Harmony, Come on Over by Shania Twain, Falling Into You by Celine Dion, ...Baby One More Time by Britney Spears, Breakaway from Kelly Clarkson and Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette being the others). Evanescence's major label debut single "Bring Me to Life", which features guest vocals from Paul McCoy of 12 Stones, was a global hit for the band and reached #5 on the American Billboard Hot 100. It also provided Evanescence with their first (and so far only) UK #1, where it stayed for five weeks from June-July 2003. The equally popular "My Immortal" peaked at #7 in the U.S. and #9 in the U.K. Their inclusion in the soundtrack for the action movie Daredevil helped propel both songs into widespread popularity and firmly cemented Evanescence within the music scene. "Bring Me to Life" garnered recognition for the band at the Grammy Awards of 2004, where the band was given the Best Hard Rock Performance award. At the same time, Evanescence was awarded Best New Artist. The two other singles off Fallen include "Going Under" (#5 US Modern Rock Tracks, #9 UK Charts) and "Everybody's Fool" (#36 US Modern Rock Tracks, #23 UK Charts), both of which include a music video. On October 22, 2003, Moody left the band abruptly in the middle of a European tour. The reasons for his departure were reportedly "creative differences." In an interview several months later, Amy Lee said: "We'd gotten to a point that if something didn't change, we wouldn't have been able to make a second record." [5] Since then, Lee has said it was almost a relief that he left because of tensions created within the band. Terry Balsamo from Cold joined the band, replacing Moody. Recently, Moody confessed in an interview that not only does he suffer from bipolar disorder, but that he's kicked a drug and alcohol habit that he was entrenched in during the strife within Evanescence. [edit]

Anywhere But Home

Anywhere but Home Released in 2004, Evanescence's new lineup released a DVD/CD compilation entitled "Anywhere but Home". The DVD is their live-from-Paris show with several behind-thescenes features, including shots of the band backstage, signing autographs, and warming up. The CD included contains a song entitled "Missing" which was previously unreleased. Also on the CD are the songs "Breathe No More" (from the Elektra movie soundtrack) and "Farther Away". They also included their cover of Korn's "Thoughtless" which they have played at several live shows. [edit]

The Open Door

Evanescence is currently working on their second album, titled The Open Door, due for release in the USA on October 3, 2006[1] and in Australia on September 30, 2006[6] The album will feature 13 tracks[7] , including first single Call Me When You're Sober, and 'Good Enough'. Lee reported that 'Good Enough' is not like any other ballad she has written before as its background is more happy. Others tracks listed on The Open Door are 'Weight Of The World', 'Lithium' and a cover of Lacrimosa from Mozart's Requiem The album has progressed slowly for a number of reasons, but perhaps chiefly because of Amy Lee's desire to allow the creative process to fully take its course and not rush production. Besides that, other distractions have included other band members' side projects, health problems concerning guitarist Terry Balsamo and the controversy revolving around the dismissal of their former manager. Lee stated on Evboard that Evanescence's new album will be wrapping up in March 2006. [8] The release was pushed to October, allegedly because "Wind-Up [the band's current record label] wants to make a few changes to the upcoming single 'Call Me When You're Sober' The Evanescence website was also updated after a long period of stasis to reflect the aforementioned press release. Amy Lee has confirmed that she wrote a song for the 2005 film version of The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe released by Disney, but it was rejected by producers due to it being "too dark and epic." However, Amy Lee said it was just more great material for the upcoming album The Open Door.[9]

Evanescence Biography: The goth-inspired Arkansas rock band Evanescence, with its Linkin Park-meets-Tori Amos sound backed by chugging guitars, easily made it to the top of the charts in 2003 with its Wind-Up Entertainment debut album, Fallen. Amy Lee and guitarist/songwriter Ben Moody formed the band at the end of the '90s after meeting in their early teens during a "youth camp," Moody said in a statement. "I heard Amy playing Meat Loaf's 'I'd Do Anything for Love' at the piano. So I went over to meet her, and she started singing for me. I was pretty much blown away, so I suckered her into joining a band with me." As a duo, Evanescence didn't perform live, instead opting to release EPs and the full-length Origin. Lee told the BBC that Evanescence was mastering demos in Memphis, TN, when she and the band were discovered by producer Pete Matthews. He shopped the songs to record companies in New York, and Evanescence eventually landed a contract with Wind-Up Entertainment, the home of Creed. The soundtrack to the 2003 Ben Affleck action movie Daredevil brought success to Evanescence. The begging "Bring Me to Life," which appeared on the soundtrack along with the ballad "My Immortal," became a hit. Paul McCoy, of labelmates 12 Stones, raps on "Bring Me to Life," which originated as a piano ballad. It proved to be a head start to Evanescence's future hit album Fallen, produced by Dave Fortman (Boy Sets Fire, Superjoint Ritual) and released in March 2003. Evanescence ran head first into controversy promoting Fallen. Originally, it was released in the Christian and secular markets; however, the band's use of profanity during an interview with Rolling Stone prompted its label, Wind-Up Records, to recall Fallen from Christian stores. Ironically, 12 Stones is also labeled Christian. Fallen surpassed double-platinum status, reaching the Top Ten in the United States, including the Top Contemporary Christian Albums chart, the Top Five in Canada, and number one in the United Kingdom. Live, the duo filled out its lineup with John LeCompt on guitar and Rocky Gray on drums. Christina Fuoco, All Music Guide

EVANESCENCE LYRICS
"My Immortal" I'm so tired of being here Suppressed by all my childish fears And if you have to leave I wish that you would just leave 'Cause your presence still lingers here And it won't leave me alone These wounds won't seem to heal This pain is just too real There's just too much that time cannot erase [Chorus:] When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears And I held your hand through all of these years But you still have All of me You used to captivate me By your resonating light Now I'm bound by the life you left behind Your face it haunts My once pleasant dreams Your voice it chased away All the sanity in me These wounds won't seem to heal

This pain is just too real There's just too much that time cannot erase [Chorus] I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone But though you're still with me I've been alone all along [Chorus]

EVANESCENCE LYRICS
"Anywhere" Dear my love, haven't you wanted to be with me And dear my love, haven't you longed to be free I can't keep pretending that I don't even know you And at sweet night, you are my own Take my hand [CHORUS:] We're leaving here tonight There's no need to tell anyone They'd only hold us down So by the morning light We'll be half way to anywhere Where love is more than just your name I have dreamt of a place for you and I No one knows who we are there All I want is to give my life only to you I've dreamt so long I cannot dream anymore Let's run away, I'll take you there We're leaving here tonight There's no need to tell anyone They'd only hold us down So by the mornings light We'll be half way to anywhere Where no one needs a reason Forget this life Come with me Don't look back you're safe now Unlock your heart Drop your guard No one's left to stop you Forget this life Come with me Don't look back you're safe now Unlock your heart Drop your guard

No one's left to stop you now [Chorus] [Silence] Yeah yeah, yeah yeah, yeah yeah

Eric Patrick Clapton, CBE (born March 30, 1945), nicknamed "Slowhand", is a Grammy Award winning British guitarist, singer and composer, who became one of the most respected and influential musicians of the rock-era, garnering an unprecedented three inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Clapton is widely considered to be one of the greatest and most influential guitarists in popular music history.

Although Clapton's musical style has varied throughout his career, it has always remained rooted in the blues. Clapton is credited as an innovator in several phases of his career, which have included blues-rock (with John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers and The Yardbirds) and hard rock (with Cream). Clapton has also achieved great chart success in genres ranging from delta blues (Me and Mr. Johnson) and psychedelic rock ("Sunshine of Your Love") to pop ("Change the World") and reggae ("I Shot the Sheriff"). Clapton is currently on his 2006-2007 world tour with good friend and longtime tourmate, Robert Cray as his supporting act.

Musical Career & Personal Life

[edit]

Clapton's Early Days

Eric Clapton was born in Ripley, Surrey, England as the illegitimate son of 16-year-old Patricia Molly Clapton and Edward Walter Fryer, a 24-year-old Canadian soldier. Fryer shipped off to war prior to Clapton's birth and then returned to Canada.

Clapton grew up with his grandparents, believing they were his parents and that his mother was his older sister. Years later his mother married another Canadian soldier, moved to Canada and left Eric with his grandparents. When Clapton was 9 years old he discovered this family secret, and the experience became a defining moment in his life. Clapton grew up a self-confessed "nasty kid". During his secondary school years he attended the Hollyfield School in Surbiton. His first job was as a postman. Influenced by the blues from an early age, at age 13 Clapton received an acoustic guitar for his birthday, but he found learning the instrument so difficult he nearly gave up. After high school, Clapton studied stained-glass design at Kingston Art School but was later kicked out for lack of progress in his studies. Clapton spent his early days busking around Kingston , Richmond, London and the West End.[1] Clapton joined his first band at 17 and stayed with this band - the early British R&B outfit The Roosters - from January through to August 1963. Clapton did a seven-gig stint with Casey Jones and the Engineers, in September 1963. [edit]

The Yardbirds & John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers

An example of the famous "Clapton is God" graffiti craze Clapton joined The Yardbirds, a blues-influenced rock and roll band in 1963 and stayed with them until March 1965. Synthesising influences from Chicago blues and leading blues guitarists such as Freddie King and B.B. King, Clapton forged a distinctive style and rapidly became one of the most talked-about guitarists in the British music scene. The band initially played covers of Chess/Checker/Vee-Jay blues numbers and began to attract a large cult following when they took over the Rolling Stones' residency at the Crawdaddy Club in Richmond. They toured England with American bluesman Sonny Boy Williamson; a joint LP, recorded in December 1963, was issued belatedly under both their names in 1965. In March 1965, just as Clapton left the band, the Yardbirds had their first major hit, on which Clapton played guitar: "For Your Love." Still obstinately dedicated to blues music, Clapton took strong exception to the Yardbirds' new pop-oriented direction, partly because "For Your Love" had been

written by pop songwriter-for-hire Graham Gouldman, who had also written hits for teen pop outfit Herman's Hermits and harmony pop band The Hollies. Clapton recommended fellow guitarist Jimmy Page as his replacement, but Page was at that time unwilling to relinquish his lucrative career as a freelance studio musician, so Page in turn recommended Clapton's successor, Jeff Beck (although Page would also eventually join the band). Having quit the Yardbirds in March, Clapton joined John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers in April 1965. His passionate playing in nightclubs -- and on the immensely influential album, Blues Breakers -- established Clapton's name worldwide as blues guitarist. With his 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard guitar and Marshall amplifier, Clapton's playing by then had inspired a craze of graffiti that deified him with the famous slogan "Clapton is God." [edit]

Cream

Album cover to Fresh Cream Clapton left the Bluesbreakers in mid-1966 (to be replaced by Peter Green) and then formed Cream, one of the earliest examples of a supergroup. Cream was also one of the earliest "power trios", with Jack Bruce (also of Manfred Mann and the Graham Bond Organisation) and Ginger Baker (another member of the GBO). During his time with Cream, Clapton began to develop as a singer and songwriter, as well as guitarist, though Bruce, one of rock's most powerful singers, took most of the lead vocals and wrote the majority of the material with lyricist Pete Brown. Debuting at the Windsor Jazz and Blues Festival, Cream established an enduring legend on the high-volume blues jamming and extended solos of their live shows, while their studio work was more sophisticated and original rock. In early 1967, Clapton's status as Britain's top guitarist was shaken by the arrival of Jimi Hendrix. Hendrix attended a performance of the newly-formed Cream at the Central London Polytechnic on October 1, 1966, during which Hendrix sat in on a shattering double-timed version of "Killing Floor". Hendrix's early club performances were avidly attended by top UK stars including Clapton, Pete Townshend, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Hendrix's arrival had an immediate and major effect on the next phase of Clapton's career, although Clapton continued to be recognized in music polls as the premier guitarist.

Cream's repertoire varied from pop soul ("I Feel Free") to lengthy blues-based instrumental jams ("Spoonful") and featured Clapton's searing guitar lines, Bruce's soaring vocals and prominent, fluid bass playing, and Baker's powerful, polyrhythmic jazz-influenced drumming. In a mere three years Cream had immense commercial success, selling 15 million records and playing to standing-room only crowds throughout the U.S. and Europe. They redefined the instrumentalist's role in rock and were one the first bands to emphasize musical virtuosity, skill and flash. Their U.S. hit singles include "Sunshine Of Your Love" (#5, 1968), "White Room" (#6, 1968) and "Crossroads" (#28, 1969) - a live cover version of Robert Johnson's "Cross Road Blues". Although Cream was hailed as one of the greatest groups of its day, and the adulation of Clapton as guitar hero reached new heights, the band was destined to be shortlived. The legendary in-fighting between Bruce and Baker and growing tensions between all three members eventually led to Cream's demise. Another significant factor was a strongly critical Rolling Stone review of a concert of the group's second headlining U.S. tour, which affected Clapton profoundly. By this time he had also fallen deeply under the spell of the music of The Band after they had released the album Music From Big Pink and began to believe that rock music was heading in a new direction. He was so infatuated with them that he even asked to join them, but was turned down. The valedictory Goodbye album featured live performances recorded live at The Forum, Los Angeles, October 19, 1968, and it was released shortly after Cream disbanded in 1968, and also featured the studio single "Badge", co-written by Clapton and George Harrison, whom he had met and become friends with after the Beatles had shared a bill with the Clapton-era Yardbirds at the London Palladium. (The chorus of "Badge" served as the basis for Harrison's later Beatles composition, "Here Comes the Sun", which Harrison reportedly composed in Clapton's back garden.) The close friendship between Clapton and Harrison also resulted in Clapton's playing on Harrison's "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from the Beatles' White Album - according to some, a tactic intended to make the other Beatles take Harrison's song more seriously, but whatever the truth, by all accounts the presence of an outsider, especially of Clapton's calibre, had the effect of bringing harmony to the irritable band (in January 1969, during the making of what would become the Let It Be album, Harrison walked out after an argument and in his absence - fearing Harrison had gone for good and concerned that the album could not be completed - John Lennon proposed that Harrison be replaced by Clapton.) In the same year of release as the White Album, Harrison released his solo debut Wonderwall Music which became the first of many Harrison solo records to feature Clapton on guitar, who would go largely uncredited due to contractual restraints. The pair would often play live together as each other's guests, right up until Harrison's death in 2001 and the following tribute concert in his name, for which Clapton was one of the main performers and organizers. Since their 1968 breakup, Cream briefly reunited in 1993 to perform at the ceremony inducting them into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. A full-scale reunion of the legendary trio took place in May 2005, with Clapton, Bruce and Baker playing 4 soldout concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall (the scene of their 1968 farewell shows) and 3 more at New York's Madison Square Garden that October. Recordings from the London shows were released on CD and DVD in September 2005

Blind Faith & Delaney and Bonnie and Friends

A desultory spell in a second supergroup, the shortlived Blind Faith (1969), which was composed of Cream drummer Baker, Steve Winwood of Traffic and Ric Grech of Family, resulted in one LP and one arena-circuit tour. The supergroup debuted before 100,000 fans in London's Hyde Park on June 7, 1969, and began a sold-out American tour in July before its one and only album had been released. The LP Blind Faith (album) was recorded in such haste that side two consisted of just two songs, one of them a 15 minute jam entitled "Do What You Like". Nevertheless, Blind Faith did include two classics: Winwood's "Can't Find My Way Home" and Clapton's "Presence of the Lord". The album's jacket image of a prepubescent girl was deemed controversial in the U.S. and was replaced by a photograph of the band. Blind Faith dissolved after only a year together, and while Winwood went on to a highly successful solo career, by now Clapton was tired of both the spotlight and the hype that had surrounded Cream and Blind Faith, and wanted to make music that more closely resembled that of The Band. Clapton decided to step into the background for a time, touring as a sideman with the American group Delaney and Bonnie and Friends. He moved to New York in late 1969 and worked with the band through early 1970. He became close friends with Delaney Bramlett, who encouraged him in his singing and writing which would show determined growth in his next effort. Using the Bramletts' backing group and an all-star cast of session players including Leon Russell and Stephen Stills whose solo albums Clapton played on, he released his first solo album in 1970 fittingly named Eric Clapton, which included the Bramlett composition "Bottle Of Red Wine" and one of Clapton's best songs from this period, "Let It Rain". It also yielded an unexpected U.S. #18 hit, the J.J. Cale cover "After Midnight". Clapton's "between-bands" period from 1969 to 1970 also saw him appear on a large number of other artists' records, ranging from George Harrison's All Things Must Pass (for contractual reasons, Clapton's contributions went uncredited for decades) to The Plastic Ono Band's Sometime in New York City and Dr John's Sun Moon and Herbs. [edit]

Derek and the Dominos

Taking over Delaney & Bonnie's rhythm section Bobby Whitlock (keyboards, vocals), Carl Radle (bass) and Jim Gordon (drums) Clapton formed a new band which was similarly intended to counteract the 'star' cult that had grown up around him and show Clapton as an equal member of a fully-fledged group. This was made evident in the choice of name Derek and the Dominos, derived from an announcer's mispronunciation of the group's provisional name - "Eric & The Dynamos" - at their first concert appearance. Clapton's close friendship with George Harrison had brought him into contact with Harrison's wife Pattie Boyd-Harrison, with whom he fell deeply in love. When she turned

him down, Clapton's unrequited affections prompted most of the material for the Dominos' album Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, most notably the hit single "Layla", inspired by the Persian classical poet Nizami Ganjavi's "The Story of Layla and Majnun", a copy of which a friend had given him; Clapton found a strong similarity between the situation of Layla and Majnun and the one between him and Boyd-Harrison.

Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs

is considered Claptons masterpiece

Working at Criteria Studios in Miami with legendary Atlantic Records producer Tom Dowd, the band recorded a brilliant double-album which is now widely regarded as Clapton's masterpiece. The two parts of "Layla" were recorded in separate sessions: the opening guitar section was recorded first, and for the second section, laid down several months later, drummer Jim Gordon composed and played the elegiac piano part. The Layla LP was actually recorded by a five-piece version of the group, thanks to the unforeseen inclusion of guitarist Duane Allman of The Allman Brothers Band. A few days into the Layla sessions, Dowd -- who was also producing the Allmans -- invited Clapton to an Allman Brothers outdoor concert in Miami. The two guitarists who previously knew each other only by reputation met backstage after the show, and then both bands retired to the studio to jam (an impromptu session which, happily, was captured on tape). Clapton and Allman fell in love with each other's playing and became instant friends, and Allman was immediately invited to become the fifth member of The Dominos. (These studio jams were eventually released as part of the 3-CD 20thanniversary edition of the Layla album.) When Allman and Clapton met, The Dominos had already recorded three tracks ("I Looked Away", "Bell Bottom Blues" and "Keep On Growing"); Allman debuted on the fourth cut, "Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out", and contributed some of his most sublime slide-guitar playing to the remainder of the LP. The album was heavily blues-influenced and featured a winning combination of the twin guitars of Allman and Clapton, with Allman's incendiary slide-guitar a key ingredient of the sound. It showcased some of Clapton's strongest material to date, as well as arguably some of his best guitar playing, with Whitlock also contributing several superb numbers, and his powerful, soul-influenced voice. Tragedy dogged the group throughout its brief career. During the sessions, Clapton was devastated by news of the death of Jimi Hendrix; eight days previously the band had cut a blistering version of "Little Wing" as a tribute to him which was added to the album. One year later, on the eve of the group's first American tour, Duane

Allman was killed in a motorcycle accident. Adding to Clapton's woes, the Layla album received only lukewarm reviews on release; he later commented that the album's initial poor reception had angered and disillusioned him, as he had (perhaps naively) expected it to be assessed on its merits rather than his involvement. The shattered group undertook a US tour. Despite Clapton's later admission that the tour took place amidst a veritable blizzard of drugs and alcohol, it resulted in the surprisingly strong live double album In Concert. But Derek and the Dominos disintegrated messily in London just as they commenced recording for their second LP. Although Radle would be Clapton's main bass player until the summer of 1979 (Radle died in May 1979 due to alcohol and narcotics), the split between Clapton and Whitlock was apparently a bitter one, and it took until 2003 before they worked together again (Clapton guested on Whitlock's appearence on the Later with Jools Holland show, playing and singing Bell Bottom Blues, available on a "Later with Jools" DVD). Another tragic footnote to the Dominos story was the fate of drummer Jim Gordon, who was an undiagnosed schizophrenic some years later, during a psychotic episode, he murdered his mother with a hammer and was confined to 14 years to life imprisonment. He was moved to a mental institution after several years, where he remains today.

Full Throttle Solo Career

Despite his success, Clapton's personal life was in a mess by 1972. In addition to his (temporarily) unrequited and intense romantic longing for Pattie Boyd-Harrison, he withdrew from recording and touring and became addicted to heroin, resulting in a career hiatus interrupted only by the Concert for Bangladesh (where he passed out on stage, was revived, and continued the show). In 1973, the "Rainbow Concert" was organized by The Who's Pete Townshend to help Clapton kick the drug. Clapton returned the favour by

playing 'The Preacher' in Ken Russell's film version of The Who's Tommy in 1975; his appearance in the film (performing "Eyesight To The Blind") is notable for the fact that he is clearly wearing a fake beard in some shots, the result of deciding to shave off his real beard after the initial takes. Now partnered with Boyd-Harrison (they would not actually marry until 1979) and free of heroin (although starting to drink heavily), Clapton put together a strong new touring band that included Radle, Miami guitarist George Terry, drummer Jamie Oldaker and vocalists Yvonne Elliman and Marcy Levy (later better known as Marcella Detroit of 1980s pop duo Shakespear's Sister). With this band Clapton recorded 461 Ocean Boulevard (1974), an album with the emphasis on songs rather than musicianship; the cover-version of "I Shot The Sheriff" was a major hit and was important in bringing reggae and the music of Bob Marley to a wider audience. The band toured the world and subsequently released the 1975 live LP, E.C. Was Here. The 1975 album There's One In Every Crowd continued the trend of 461. Its original intended title The World's Greatest Guitar Player (There's One In Every Crowd) was altered, as it was felt the ironic intention would be missed. (Clapton's own original cover artwork, a (self-)portrait of a miserable-looking character with a pint glass, was also replaced by a photograph of Clapton's dog Jeep, apparently with its muzzle on a coffin.) Clapton continued to release albums sporadically and toured regularly, but much of his output from this period was deliberately low-key and failed to find the wide acceptance of his earlier work; highlights of the era include No Reason to Cry, whose collaborators included Bob Dylan and Robbie Robertson, and Slowhand, which featured "Wonderful Tonight", another song inspired by Pattie Boyd-Harrison, and a second J.J. Cale cover, "Cocaine", which has since become a rock staple. [edit]

Controversy
In 1976, Clapton was the centre of controversy and accusations of racism, when he spoke out against increasing immigration during a concert in Birmingham. He commented that England had "...become overcrowded...that England sells itself as the "land of milk and honey" only to turn around and stick its invited immigrants into low paying labour jobs, living in substandard conditions..." and implored the crowd to vote for [ ] Enoch Powell to prevent Britain from becoming "a black colony". citation needed These comments (along with equally controversial remarks and actions by David Bowie) led to the creation of the Rock Against Racism movement in the UK. Despite his controversial stance, Clapton has not made any notable effort to distance himself from the remarks and has denied there was any contradiction between his political views and his career based on an essentially black musical form. In a 1985 interview with Q magazine he defended his position, saying it wasn't racist but instead borne of concern that "...ghettoes would spring up all over England, which they have done."[citation needed] However, in a later interview [citation needed], although not fully retracting the remarks, he attributed them to his inebriation at the time, a product of his muchpublicised alcoholism.

To counterbalance claims of racism supporters often cite that in the late 1980s Clapton had four black musicians to his band, bassist Nathan East, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes, drummer Steve Ferrone and backing singer Katie Kissoon. Clapton had previously played and recorded with many black musicians (including Buddy Guy, BB King, Robert Cray and Billy Preston), and had appeared alongside performers of varying ethnicities at collaborative events (such as The Concert for Bangla Desh); although this was the first time Clapton had been in a band in which the official members were not all Caucasian. Clapton has dated Naomi Campbell who is of Afro-Jamaican heritage [1], and has a home in an Antigua which is populated almost entirely by people of African descendants. [2] [edit]

Comeback

Eric Clapton's Antigua Residence, as seen from Shirley Heights The late 1970s saw Clapton struggle to come to terms with the changes in popular music, and a relapse into alcoholism that eventually saw him hospitalised and then spending a period of convalescence in Antigua, where he would later support the creation of a drugs and alcohol rehabilitation centre, The Crossroads Centre. In 1984, he performed on Pink Floyd member, Roger Waters solo album, The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking and went on tour with Waters following the release of the album. Since then Waters and Clapton have had a close relationship, and in 2005 they performed together for the Tsunami Relief Fund and on May 20, 2006 performed with Waters at the Highclere Castle playing two set pieces of 'Wish You Were Here' and 'Comfortably Numb'. As Clapton came back from his addictions, his album output continued in the 1980s, including two produced with Phil Collins, 1985's Behind the Sun (which produced the hits "Forever Man" and "She's Waiting") and 1986's August. August, a polished release suffused with Collins's trademark drum/horn sound, became Clapton's biggest seller in the UK to date and matched his highest chart position, number 3. The album's first track, the hit "It's In The Way That You Use It", was also featured in the Tom Cruise-Paul Newman movie The Color of Money The horn-peppered "Run" echoed Collins' "Sussudio" and rest of the producer's Genesis/solo output, while "Tearing Us Apart" (with Tina Turner) and the bitter "Miss You" echoed Clapton at his angry best.

The period kicked off Clapton's extensive two-year period of touring with Collins and their August collaborates, bassist Nathan East and keyboard player/songwriter Greg Phillinganes. Despite his own earlier battles with the bottle, Clapton also remade "After Midnight" as a single and a promotional track for the Michelob beer brand produced by Anheuser-Busch, which had also marketed earlier songs by Collins and Steve Winwood. Clapton won more plaudits and a British Academy Television Award for his collaboration with Michael Kamen on the score for the critically-acclaimed 1985 BBC television thriller serial Edge of Darkness. In 1989, Clapton's commercial and artistic resurgence finally came full circle with Journeyman, which featured songs in a wide range of styles from blues to jazz, soul and pop and collaborators including George Harrison and Robert Cray. [edit]

Tragedy again
In 1985 Clapton, while still married to Pattie Boyd-Harrison, had started a relationship with Yvonne Khan Kelly; they had a daughter, Ruth, in the same year. Clapton did not publicly acknowledge his daughter's existence for several years (she eventually made a spoken-word appearance on his 1998 album Pilgrim and in 2001 was pictured in the Reptile album artwork). Clapton and Boyd-Harrison divorced in 1989 following his affair with Italian model Lory Del Santo, who gave birth to his son Conor in August 1986 (the month of his birth prompting the title of the album released that year). The early 1990s saw tragedy enter Clapton's life again on two occasions. On August 27, 1990 guitarist Stevie Ray Vaughan, who was touring with Clapton, and two members of their road crew were killed in a helicopter crash between concerts. Then, on March 20, 1991 at 11:00AM, Conor, who was four and a half, died when he fell from a 53rd-story window while jumping on his bed in his parents' New York City apartment, landing on the roof of an adjacent four-story building. A fraction of Clapton's grief was heard on the song "Tears in Heaven" (on the soundtrack to the 1991 movie Rush), co-written with Will Jennings, which, like the MTV Unplugged album that followed it, won a Grammy award. Clapton's MTV Unplugged album included a former member of the Allman Brothers Band: keyboardist Chuck Leavell. [edit]

Slowhand Re-Emerging
While Unplugged featured Clapton playing acoustic guitar, his 1994 album From The Cradle contains new versions of old blues standards highlighted by fine guitar playing. Clapton finished the twentieth century with critically-acclaimed collaborations with Carlos Santana and B. B. King. Clapton's 1996 recording of the Wayne Kirkpatrick/ Gordon Kennedy/Tommy Sims tune "Change the World" (featured in the soundtrack of the movie

Phenomenon)

won a Grammy award for song of the year in 1997, the same year he recorded Retail Therapy, an album of electronic music with Simon Climie under the pseudonym TDF. In 1999 Clapton, then 54, met 25-year-old graphic artist Melia McEnery in Los Angeles while working on an album with B.B. King. They married in 2002 at St Mary Magdalen church in Clapton's birthplace, Ripley, and as of 2005 have three daughters, Julia Rose (2001), Ella May (2003), and Sophie (2005). In November 2002 Clapton masterminded The Concert for George, a tribute to George Harrison at the Royal Albert Hall, featuring Sir Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty, amongst others. The rights to Clapton's official memoirs, to be written by Christopher Simon Sykes and to be published in 2007, were reportedly sold at the 2005 Frankfurt Book Fair for USD $4 million. Clapton initiated the revival of Cream, playing at London's Royal Albert Hall in May and New York's Madison Square Garden in October 2005. In 2006 it was announced that Derek Trucks would join Clapton's band for his 2006 and 2007 tour. Trucks is the third member of the Allman Brothers Band to support Clapton. On May 20th, 2006 he performed with a set band consisting of ex-Queen drummer Roger Taylor and ex- Pink Floyd frontman Roger Waters, at the Highclere Castle. [edit]

Clapton's Guitars

The Eric Clapton signature Stratocaster, made by Fender Clapton's choice of electric guitars have been as notable as the man himself, and alongside Hank Marvin, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix, Clapton has exerted a crucial and widespread influence in popularising particular models of the electric guitar. Early on in his career, Clapton used both Gibson and Fender guitars, but became exclusively a Gibson player in mid-1965, when he purchased a used 1960 Gibson Les Paul Standard guitar, and was largely responsible for Gibson's reintroduction of the original Les Paul body style after it was replaced by the Gibson SG. During his stint in Cream, Clapton continued to play Gibson guitars, including Les Paul models, a Gibson Firebird and a Gibson ES-335, but his most famous guitar in this period was a 1964 Gibson SG. The guitar was noted for its remarkable, psychedelic appearance. In early 1967, just before their first US promotional tour, Clapton's SG, Bruce's Fender VI and Baker's drum head were repainted in eye-popping psychedelic designs created by the visual art collective known as The Fool. Clapton played a Les Paul on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." He later loaned his SG to singer Jackie Lomax, who subsequently sold it to musician Todd Rundgren for US$500 in 1972. Rundgren restored the guitar and nicknamed it "Sunny," after "Sunshine Of Your Love." Rundgren played the guitar extensively on record and in concert in the

mid-1970s, eventually retiring it in 1977. He retained it until 2000, when he sold it at an auction for US$150,000. During Clapton's heroin addiction from 1969 to 1974, he began to sell off his collection of guitars to pay for his drug habit. Seeing Clapton selling his most treasured possessions was one of the reasons Pete Townshend was prompted to assist him get over his addiction. Another moment involving Clapton's guitars and Pete Townshend resulted in Hard Rock Cafe's unique and gigantic collection of memorabilia. In 1971, Clapton, a regular at the original Hard Rock Cafe in Hyde Park, London, gave a signed guitar to the cafe to designate his favorite bar stool. Pete Townshend, in turn, donated one of his own guitars, with a note attached: "Mine's as good as his! Love, Pete." From there, the collection of memorabilia grew, resulting in Hard Rock Cafe's atmosphere. Later (and probably due to Hendrix's or Robbie Robertson's influence), Clapton began using Fender Stratocasters. Most famous of all Clapton's guitars was "Blackie" (a concoction of Clapton's favorite parts from several other Strats) which he used until the late 1980s when it wore out. In 1988 Clapton, along with fellow Strat player Yngwie Malmsteen, was honored by Fender with the introduction of his signature Eric Clapton Stratocaster. These were the first two artist models in the Stratocaster range and since then the artist series has grown to include models inspired by both Clapton's contemporaries such as Jeff Beck and those who have influenced him such as Buddy Guy. The late Stevie Ray Vaughan also has an artist series model. Clapton has also been honoured with a signature-model acoustic guitar made by the famous American firm of C.F. Martin & Co.. In 1999 Clapton auctioned off some of his guitar collection to raise money for his Crossroads Centre he founded in Antigua in 1997. The Crossroads Centre is a treatment base for addictive disorders like drugs and alcohol. The total revenue raised by the auction at Christie's was US $7,438,624. [edit]

Trivia

Clapton hires a man to take care of his Guitars. They are kept in controlled environment and at the moment he has about 750 guitars. Back when he was at his prime he had some 2000 guitars.[citation needed]

Clapton was ranked 4th in Rolling Stones controversial list of 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. [3] According to the aforementioned list, Clapton is the second greatest living guitarist (behind B.B. King). Early in his career, Clapton used a 1960 model Gibson Les Paul, and was partially responsible for Gibson's reintroduction of the original Les Paul body style after it was replaced by the Gibson SG. Although many sources give his surname at birth as Clapp, this is incorrect. Though his grandmother's second husband's name was Clapp, his mother's name was Clapton; his grandparents never legally adopted him. Eric Clapton is credited on Dire Straits Brothers in Arms album, as he loaned Mark Knopfler one of his guitars for the album. Clapton played lead guitar on The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking, Roger Waters' debut solo album after leaving Pink Floyd. Clapton was banned from driving in France and had his British driving license confiscated after being clocked driving at 216 km/h (134mph) in a Porsche 911 Turbo on a French motorway in October 2004.[4] Clapton claims to have slept with over 1,000 women. He supposedly once ordered a fellow musician to let him sleep with his girlfriend.[5] Minor Planet 4305 is named 4305 Clapton to honor him. It is an asteroid between Mars and Jupiter.[6] The soundtrack of Goodfellas contains two of his songs: "Layla" (by Derek and the Dominos) and "Sunshine of Your Love" (by Cream). Both of these songs have immediately recognizable guitar riffs (even to those who have never heard the songs in their entirety), although the portion of "Layla" used is the piano coda, and not the riff for which the song is known.[7] Clapton performed at The Band's farewell show, which is chronicled in The Last Waltz, a film by Martin Scorsese. While performing the beginning of "Further On Up the Road," his guitar strap came undone. To cover for him while he fixed it, Robbie Robertson improvised a guitar solo. Clapton played two farewell concerts on November 26: Cream in 1968, and The Last Waltz in 1976. Ironically, The Band's music is partly what inspired him to leave Cream in the first place. Clapton and Cream bandmates Ginger Baker and Jack Bruce have all played with each other in other groups. Clapton and Baker played together in the short-lived supergroup Blind Faith, Baker and Bruce played together with the Graham Bond Organisation and Blues Incorporated, and Bruce and Clapton played together near the end of Clapton's tenure with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. Prior to the Cream reunion at the Royal Albert Hall, the band had never played "Badge" live, since the song was included on Goodbye, the band's last original album before their break-up. However, Clapton, as a solo artist, has played the song live, as indicated on The Cream of Eric Clapton. Before the formation of Cream in 1966, Clapton was all but unknown in the United States. He left The Yardbirds before "For Your Love" hit the American Top 10. Once while playing a Cream concert, he and Ginger Baker suddenly stopped playing; Jack Bruce, apparently due to the volume of his amplification, didn't notice.[8] Even though all three were band members of The Yardbirds, Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck never played in the band all at the same time. The three guitarists did however all play on stage at the same time at the ARMS charity concerts

in 1983 in honour of Ronnie Lane. Clapton and Page had previously played together with The Immediate All-Stars in 1965. According to an interview with Ginger Baker on the Cream reunion DVD, the reunion was Clapton's idea. When "Layla" from Unplugged hit #12 on the U.S. charts, Clapton became one of only two artists (the other being Neil Sedaka) to have made the Billboard Hot 100 with two versions of the same song. Upon his return to England after recording Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, he was supporting a 1,000-per-week heroin addiction. Clapton holds the #10 ranked guitar solo for the song "Crossroads" in Guitar World magazine's 100 Greatest Guitar Solos. While this is his highest ranked solo, he also boasts 4 others. Clapton is the only person inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio three times (The Yardbirds, Cream, and solo). Clapton wrote the score to the film Rush. That film featured Gregg Allman, whose brother, Duane, was a guest musician who helped Clapton record Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. His name has appeared on some albums distributed in Japan as Eric Crapton, [9] though this is most likely a case of Engrish rather than sabotage.

It's late in the evening; she's wondering what clothes to wear. She puts on her make-up and brushes her long blonde hair. And then she asks me, "Do I look all right?" And I say, "Yes, you look wonderful tonight." We go to a party and everyone turns to see This beautiful lady that's walking around with me. And then she asks me, "Do you feel all right?" And I say, "Yes, I feel wonderful tonight." I feel wonderful because I see The love light in your eyes. And the wonder of it all Is that you just don't realize how much I love you. It's time to go home now and I've got an aching head, So I give her the car keys and she helps me to bed. And then I tell her, as I turn out the light, I say, "My darling, you were wonderful tonight. Oh my darling, you were wonderful tonight."

Overview
Their early music was a hybrid of country and bluegrass instrumentation grafted onto the harmonies of California surfer rock, producing tender ballads and soft top-down countryflavored pop-rock about relationships, cars, and the wandering life. The originators of this genre were gifted singer/songwriters, among them Gram Parsons, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, and Warren Zevon. The Eagles took the singer-songwriter ethos to a group setting with increased emphasis on arrangements and musicianship, and the group's early sound became synonymous with the southern California country rock. On later albums the band dispensed with bluegrass instrumentation and gravitated to a more straight-ahead rock sound. [edit]

Guitarist/mandolinist/banjo

player/Vocalist Bernie Leadon (born July 19, 1947, in Minneapolis, Minnesota) had a passion for country and bluegrass that shaped the band's early direction. (quit group 1975)
Bassist/Vocalist Randy Meisner

(born March 8, 1946 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska) was a car and cycle enthusiast who preferred spending time with his family to playing bass in a rock and roll band. (quit group 1977)

History

Success & breakup

The band formed in 1971 when Linda Ronstadt's then-manager, John Boylan, extracted Frey, Leadon, and Meisner from their affiliations. They were short a drummer until Frey phoned Henley, whom he had met at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. The band backed up Ronstadt on a two-month tour, then decided to form their own band, the Eagles. Their first album, Eagles, was filled with pure, sometimes innocent country rock; their second, Desperado, was themed on Old West outlaws and introduced the group's penchant for conceptual songwriting. Those two albums were produced by Glyn Johns, who previously worked with The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, and The Who. The band wanted to rock, but Johns tended to extract the lush side of the band's double-edged music. To record their third album, On the Border, they at first worked with Johns but after completing two tracks, turned to Bill Szymczyk to produce the rest of the album. Szymczyk brought in Don Felder to add slide guitar to a song called "Good Day in Hell", and the band was blown away. Two days later Felder became the fifth Eagle. On the Border yielded a #1 Billboard single in the song "Best of My Love", which hit the top of the charts on March 1, 1975. Their next album, One of These Nights, had an aggressive, sinewy rock stance. Between the album and the subsequent tour, Bernie Leadon left the group, disillusioned about the direction the band's music was taking. The group replaced Leadon with Joe Walsh, a veteran of such groups as the James Gang and Barnstorm and a solo artist in his own right. The addition of Walsh made the group's aim perfectly clear: they wanted to rock. The title track from One of These Nights hit #1 on the Billboard chart August 2, 1975. By this time, the people in the band started clashing with each other and there were intra-band fights. Meanwhile, in early 1976 Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) was released. It went on to become the biggest-selling album in US history, selling over 29 million copies.

The group's next album, Hotel California, came out in late 1976. "New Kid in Town" was a #1 hit in Billboard on February 26, 1977 and "Hotel California" on May 7, 1977. The striking, mournful ballad "Wasted Time" closed the first side of the record, while an instrumental reprise of it opened the second side. The album concluded with "The Last Resort". In all Hotel California is generally considered to be the Eagles' masterpiece, and has appeared on several lists of the best albums of all time; it is also easily their best-selling studio album. During the final leg of the ensuing tour, however, Randy Meisner decided he had had enough hotel rooms in his seven years as an Eagle and left the band for the relative quiet of Nebraska to recuperate and instigate a solo career. The Eagles replaced Meisner with the man who had succeeded him in Poco, Timothy B. Schmit. 1977 saw (what was at the time) the entire Eagles line-up performing instrumental work and backing vocals for Randy Newman's album Little Criminals. However, the album credits them as individual performers rather than as the Eagles, possibly to avoid a contract dispute with the Eagles' record label. In February 1978, the Eagles went into the studio to produce their final studio album, The Long Run. The album took two years to make, but yielded the group's fifth and last #1 single in Billboard, "Heartache Tonight" (November 10, 1979). The tour to promote the album intensified personality differences between band members, made worse on the night of November 21, 1980 when Henley was arrested for cocaine, Quaalude, and marijuana possession after a nude 16-year-old prostitute had drug-related seizures in a hotel room. Henley was subsequently charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor. In addition, Glenn Frey and Don Felder had to be separated by police and fellow band members backstage at a 1980 fundraising concert for California Senator Alan Cranston. Frey claimed that he confronted Felder after he heard him insult Senator Cranston under his breath. The tour ended on July 31, 1980 in Long Beach, California, when tempers boiled over into what Bill Szymczyk memorably described as "The Long Night At Wrong Beach." Frey and Felder spent the entire show describing to each other the beating each planned to administer backstage - "Only three more songs until I kick your ass, pal," Frey recalls Felder telling him near the end of the band's set. Felder recalls Frey making a similar threat to him just as they began to sing "The Best Of My Love." As soon as the show was over, mayhem broke out. Frey launched an assault on Felder, who protected himself with his guitar. Within seconds, the rest of the band had joined in. It took a dozen roadies to pull the warring factions apart[1] It was the end of the Eagles, although the band still owed Warners a live record from the tour. Eagles Live (released in November 1980) was mixed by Frey and Henley on opposite coasts - the two decided they couldn't bear to be in the same state, let alone the same studio, and as Bill Szymczyk put it, the record's perfect three-part harmonies were fixed "courtesy of Federal Express." After credits that listed no less than five attorneys, the album's liner notes simply said, "Thank you and goodnight." [edit]

Resumption

In 1993, an Eagles country tribute album Common Thread was released. Travis Tritt insisted on having the Long Run-era Eagles in his video for "Take It Easy." After the "Take It Easy" video was completed the following year, the band reunited, after years of public speculation that it would. The personnel was the five Long Run era members, supplemented by additional players on stage. The ensuing tour spawned a live album entitled Hell Freezes Over (named for Henley's statement that the group would get back together only when hell froze over), and two singles -- "Get Over It" and "Love Will Keep Us Alive". Controversy followed on September 12, 1996 when the band dedicated "Peaceful Easy Feeling" to Saddam Hussein at a United States Democratic Party fundraiser held in Los Angeles. In 1998, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. During the induction ceremony, all seven former members played together on stage. Several subsequent reunion tours would follow, notable for their record-setting ticket prices. The Eagles were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2001. In February 2001, Don Felder was fired from the group; Felder and the Eagles filed lawsuits against each other. In 2003 the Eagles released a new single, the September 11ththemed "Hole in the World". As of 2005 the Eagles consist of Frey, Henley, Walsh, and Schmit. On their Farewell Tour I they are supplemented by eight additional players: a drummer/percussionist (Scott Crago), a guitarist named Steuart Smith (to play Felder's parts), two keyboard players (Michael Thompson and Will Hollis), and a four-person horn section (Al Garth, Bill Armstrong, Chris Mostert and Greg Smith) that also can play violin and additional percussion. On June 14th, 2005, the Eagles released a new DVD entitled Farewell 1: Live from Melbourne featuring two new songs: Glenn Frey's "No More Cloudy Days" and Joe Walsh's "One Day at a Time". The band will tour Europe in the summer of 2006. Don Henley has recently said a new Eagles album is on the way and they are aiming for it to be out by Christmas. The new album will be titled The Long Road To Eden. [edit]

Vocal Group Hall of Fame page on The Eagles The Eagles Lyrics

With five number one singles and four number one albums, the Eagles were among the most successful recording artists of the 1970s; at the end of the 20th century, two of those albums, Eagles: Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975 and Hotel California, ranked among the ten best-selling albums ever, according to the certifications of the Record Industry Association of America. Though most of its members came from outside California, the group was closely identified with a country- and folktinged sound that initially found favor in and around Los Angeles in the late '60s, as played by such bands as the Flying Burrito Brothers and Poco, both of which contributed members to the Eagles. But the band also drew upon traditional rock & roll styles and, in their later work, helped define the broadly popular rock sound eventually referred to as classic rock. That helped the Eagles to achieve a perennial appeal among generations of music fans who continued to buy their records many years after they had split up, which inspired the reunion they mounted in the mid-'90s. The band was formed by four Los Angeles-based musicians who had come to the West Coast from other parts of the U.S. Singer/bassist Randy Meisner (born in Scottsbluff, NE, on March 8, 1946) moved to L.A. in 1964 as part of a band originally called the Soul Survivors (not to be confused with the East Coast-based Soul Survivors, who scored a Top Five hit with "Expressway to Your Heart" in 1967) and later renamed the Poor. In 1968, he was a founding member of Poco, but left the band prior to the release of its debut album, joining the Stone Canyon Band, the backup group for Rick Nelson. Singer/guitarist/banjoist/mandolinist Bernie Leadon (born in Minneapolis, MN, on July 19, 1947) arrived in L.A. in 1967 as a member of Hearts and Flowers before joining Dillard and Clark and then the Flying Burrito Brothers. Singer/drummer Don Henley (born in Gilmer, TX, on July 22, 1947) moved to L.A. in June 1970 with his band Shiloh, which made one self-titled album for Amos Records before breaking up. Glenn Frey (born in Detroit, MI, on November 6, 1948) performed in his hometown and served as a backup musician to Bob Seger before moving to L.A. in the summer of 1968. He formed the duo Longbranch Pennywhistle with J.D. Souther, and they signed to Amos Records, which released their self-titled album in 1969. In the spring of 1971, Frey and Henley were hired to play in Linda Ronstadt's backup band. Meisner and Leadon also played backup to Ronstadt during her summer tour, though the four only did one gig together, at Disneyland in July. They did, however, all appear on Ronstadt's next album, Linda Ronstadt, released in early 1972. In September 1971, Frey, Henley, Leadon, and Meisner signed with manager David Geffen, agreeing to record for his soon-to-be-launched label, Asylum Records; soon after, they adopted the name the Eagles. In February 1972, they flew to England and spent two weeks recording their debut album, Eagles, with producer Glyn Johns. It was released in June, reaching the Top 20 and going gold in a little over a year and a half, following the release of two Top Ten hits, "Take It Easy" and "Witchy Woman," and one Top 20 hit, "Peaceful Easy Feeling." The Eagles toured as an opening act throughout 1972 and into early 1973, when they returned to England and Glyn Johns to record their second LP, Desperado, a concept album about outlaws. Released in April 1973, it reached the Top 40 and went gold in a little less than a year and a half, spawning the Top 40 single "Tequila Sunrise." The title track, though never released as a single, became one of the band's better-known songs and was included on its first hits collection. After touring to support Desperado, the Eagles again convened a recording session with Glyn Johns for their third album. But their desire to make harder rock music clashed with Johns' sense of them as a country-rock band, and they split from the producer after recording two tracks, "You Never Cry Like a Lover" and "The Best of My Love." After an early 1974 tour opened by singer/guitarist Joe Walsh, they hired Walsh's producer, Bill Szymczyk, who handled the rest of On the Border. Szymczyk brought in a session guitarist, Don Felder (born in Gainesville, FL, on September 21, 1947), an old friend of Bernie Leadon's who so impressed the rest of the band that he was recruited to join the group. On the Border was released in March 1974. It went gold and reached the Top Ten in June, the Eagles' fastest selling album yet. The first single, "Already Gone," reached the Top 20 the same month. But the most successful song on the LP, the one that broke them through to a much larger audience, was "The Best of My Love," released as a single in November. It hit number one on the easy listening charts in February 1975 and topped the pop charts a month later.

The Eagles' fourth album, One of These Nights, was an out-of-the-box smash. Released in June 1975, it

went gold the same month and hit number one in July. It featured three singles that hit the Top Five: the chart-topping title song, "Lyin' Eyes," and "Take It to the Limit." "Lyin' Eyes" won the 1975 Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group, or Chorus, and the Eagles also earned Grammy nominations for Album of the Year (One of These Nights) and Record of the Year ("Lyin' Eyes"). The group went on a headlining world tour, beginning with the U.S. and Europe. But on December 20, 1975, it was announced that Bernie Leadon had quit the band. Joe Walsh (born in Wichita, KS, on November 20, 1947) was brought in as his replacement. He immediately joined the tour, which continued to the Far East in early 1976. The Eagles' extensive touring kept them out of the studio, and with no immediate plans for a new album, they agreed to the release of a compilation, Eagles: Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975, in February 1976. The first album certified platinum for sales of one million copies, it topped the charts and became a phenomenal success, eventually selling upwards of 25,000,000 copies and dueling with Michael Jackson's Thriller for the title of the best-selling album of all time in the U.S. It took the Eagles 18 months to follow One of These Nights with their fifth album, Hotel California. Released in December 1976, it was certified platinum in one week, hit number one in January 1977, and eventually sold over 10,000,000 copies. The singles "New Kid in Town" and "Hotel California" hit number one, and "Life in the Fast Lane" made the Top 20. "Hotel California" won the 1977 Grammy for Record of the Year and was nominated for Song of the Year; the album was nominated for Album of the Year and for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group, or Chorus. The Eagles embarked on a world tour in March 1977 that began with a month in the U.S., followed by a month in Europe and the Far East, then returned to the U.S. in May for stadium dates. At the end of the tour in September, Randy Meisner left the band; he was replaced by Timothy B. Schmit (born in Sacramento, CA, November 20, 1947), formerly of Poco, in which he also had replaced Meisner.
The Eagles began working on a new album in March 1978 and took nearly a year and a half to complete

it. The Long Run was released in September 1979. It hit number one and was certified platinum after four months, eventually earning multi-platinum certifications. "Heartache Tonight," its lead-off single, hit number one, and "I Can't Tell You Why" and "The Long Run" became Top Ten hits. "Heartache Tonight" won the 1979 Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The Eagles toured the U.S. in 1980, and at a week-long series of shows at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, they recorded Eagles Live. (Also included were some tracks recorded in 1976.) Released in November 1980, the double-LP (since reissued as a single CD) reached the Top Five and went multi-platinum, with the single "Seven Bridges Road" reaching the Top 40.
The Eagles were inactive after the end of their 1980 tour, but their breakup was not officially announced until May 1982. All five released solo recordings. (Walsh, of course, maintained a solo career before, during, and after the Eagles.) During the rest of the 1980s, the bandmembers received several lucrative offers to reunite, but they declined. In 1990, Frey and Henley began writing together again, and they performed along with Schmit and Walsh at benefit concerts that spring. A full-scale reunion was rumored, but did not take place. Four years later, however, the Eagles did reunite. In the spring of 1994,

they taped an MTV concert special and then launched a tour that ended up running through August 1996. The MTV show aired in October, followed in November by an audio version of it, the album Hell Freezes Over, which topped the charts and became a multi-million seller, spawning the Top 40 pop hit "Get Over It" and the number one adult contemporary hit "Love Will Keep Us Alive." The Eagles next appeared together in January 1998 for their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, when the five present members performed alongside past members Leadon and Meisner. On December 31, 1999, they played a millennium concert at the Staples Center in Los Angeles that was recorded and included on the box-set retrospective Selected Works 1972-1999 in November 2000. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide

Eagles lyrics

"Eagles Hotel California lyrics" On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair Warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light My head grew heavy and my sight grew dim I had to stop for the night There she stood in the doorway; I heard the mission bell And I was thinking to myself, 'This could be Heaven or this could be Hell' Then she lit up a candle and she showed me the way There were voices down the corridor, I thought I heard them say... Welcome to the Hotel California Such a lovely place Such a lovely face Plenty of room at the Hotel California Any time of year, you can find it here Her mind is Tiffany-twisted, she got the Mercedes bends She got a lot of pretty, pretty boys, that she calls friends How they dance in the courtyard, sweet summer sweat. Some dance to remember, some dance to forget So I called up the Captain, 'Please bring me my wine' He said, 'We haven't had that spirit here since nineteen sixty nine' And still those voices are calling from far away, Wake you up in the middle of the night Just to hear them say... Welcome to the Hotel California Such a lovely place Such a lovely face They livin' it up at the Hotel California

What a nice surprise, bring your alibis Mirrors on the ceiling, The pink champagne on ice And she said 'We are all just prisoners here, of our own device' And in the master's chambers, They gathered for the feast The stab it with their steely knives, But they just can't kill the beast Last thing I remember, I was Running for the door I had to find the passage back To the place I was before 'Relax,' said the night man, We are opened to receive. You can checkout any time you like, but you can never leave!

Lyrical themes
Evergrey's lyrics have always been of the darker sort. The same can be said of the band's imagery. While The Dark Discovery dealt with a variety of ideas, later albums have been concept albums, dealing with issues like self-reformation (Recreation Day), paranoia, alien abduction (In Search of Truth), child abuse, and religion (The Inner Circle). is an album that covers many issues, ranging from death and mourning to general fear and sorrow, all of which contribute to a greater concept of re-creation of oneself. These ideas are explored from many different points of view, such as someone contemplating suicide ("As I Lie Bleeding"), mourners after a funeral ("I'm Sorry," a cover of Dilba Demirbag's hit), and dying people's looking back on their "unforgivable" sins ("Unforgivable Sin"). "Unforgivable Sin" also acted as a catalyst for the next album, (The Inner Circle), which dealt with the same two issues described in the song: religion and child abuse.

Foreigner is a rock band formed in New York City, USA in 1976 by veteran musicians Mick Jones and Ian McDonald, along with then unknown vocalist Lou Gramm (Louis Grammatico), (see 1976 in music). Despite accusations of formulaic commercialism, Foreigner's unique style of arena rock with keyboard flourishes has racked up sales of over 50 million records worldwide to date.

Biography
The band is led by British journeyman rocker Mick Jones (former member of Nero and the Gladiators, Spooky Tooth, and The Leslie West Band) who in early 1976 met with ex-King Crimson member Ian McDonald and formed Foreigner with Lou Gramm, Dennis Elliot, Al Greenwood, and Ed Gagliardi to form a sextet. The band's debut album Foreigner sold more than four million copies in the United States and stayed in the Top Twenty for a year with such hits as "Feels Like the First Time", "Cold as Ice", and "Long Long Way From Home". Their sophomore effort, Double Vision, topped their previous selling five million records and spawned "Hot Blooded" and title track "Double Vision". Their third album, Head Games, is a more back-to-basics effort, which Gramm refers to as their "grainiest" album. This album was also successful due to the thunderous "Dirty White Boy" and another title track hit "Head Games".

1980 brought personnel changes so that now the band was a quartet and Rick Wills played bass. Gagliardi reportedly fainted when he was dismissed from the band. He and Greenwood went on to the failed band Spys. Foreigner's next album, their fourth, and appropriately named 4, was their biggest hit containing "Jukebox Hero", "Waiting for a Girl Like You", and "Urgent". Their next album, Agent Provocateur, released in 1984, gave them their only #1 hit, a gospel-inspired ballad backed by the New Jersey Mass Choir, "I Want to Know What Love Is". In the late 1980s Jones and Gramm each put out solo efforts and the band went on hiatus. But in 1987 Foreigner regrouped and released Inside Information; spawning hits such as "Say You Will" and "I Don't Want To Live Without you". But then, reportedly due to the egos of Gramm and Jones the band, once again, dissolved. In 1990 Mick Jones reformed Foreigner with a new lead vocalist, Johnny Edwards. This edition of Foreigner released the album Unusual Heat in 1991. This was their worst selling album and only climbed as high as #117 on the Billboard 200, although "Lowdown and Dirty" was a minor mainstream rock hit. But by 1992, however, Lou Gramm rejoined Foreigner and produced, the band's second greatest hits album, "The Very Best and Beyond". Three years later Foreigner released what was supposed to be the band's comeback album, Mr. Moonlight. This album fared even worse than Unusual Heat due to the rising popularity of alternative and grunge rock, although the ballad "Until the End of Time" was a minor hit. The reformed band stayed together through the hard times and toured throughout the United States until 2002. In 2003, Gramm again left Foreigner to embark on another solo career and formed the Lou Gramm Band. Jones, the only remaining original member of Foreigner, decided to reform the band once again, and hired Kelly Hansen to replace Gramm as lead vocalist for the group in 2005. [edit]

Trivia

In the "Revenge of the Mooninites" episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force, the Mooninites accquire the Foreigner Belt, a magical belt that makes literal the lyrics of Foreigner songs. For example: "Cold as Ice" freezes Carl solid, "Dirty White Boy" makes Meatwad act like a irreverent redneck, "Double Vision" messes up Frylock's vision, "Hot Blooded" heats up a pool the Mooninites are swimming in, and "Head Games" turns Carl's head into a Connect Four grid. The Foreigner song "Double Vision" was used in 200304 in a Coors Light commercial where a white male who is on the beach sees the Coors Light Twins and twin Coors Light beer cases. "Double Vision" was also used in Burger King commercials circa 1997. The Foreigner song "Urgent" was used in early 2006 in a Verizon Wireless commercial in the United States promoting its V-Cast service. It was also used in a 1996 Burger King commercial. Lead singer Mick Jones is stepfather to British DJ Mick Ronson

While quite a few arena rock acts of the '70s found the transformation into the '80s quite difficult, several acts continued to flourish and enjoyed some of their biggest commercial success:
Journey, Styx, REO Speedwagon, and especially Foreigner. Foreigner's leader from the beginning has been British guitarist Mick Jones, who first broke into the music biz as a "hired gun" of sorts, appearing on recordings by George Harrison and Peter Frampton, and as part of a later-day version of hard rockers Spooky Tooth. By the mid-'70s, Jones had relocated to New York City, where he was a brief member of the Leslie West Band and served as an A&R man for a record company. But it wasn't long before Jones felt the urge to be part of another rock outfit as he sought to put together a band that would be able to combine elements of rock, progressive, R&B, and pop into a single, cohesive style. Jones soon assembled a group consisting of ex-King Crimson sax player Ian McDonald and ex-Ian Hunter

drummer Dennis Elliot (both of whom were British), along with New York musicians Al Greenwood (keyboards), Ed Gagliardi (bass), and Lou Gramm (vocals), the latter of which was previously a member of an obscure '70s outfit called Black Sheep. Jones found immediate songwriting chemistry with Gramm (one of the first songs they wrote together was the eventual hit "Cold As Ice"), resulting in the newly formed band taking the name Foreigner and signing a recording contract with Atlantic Records. Foreigner's self-titled debut was issued in 1977 and became an immediate hit on the strength of the hit singles "Feels Like the First Time," "Long, Long Way From Home," and the aforementioned "Cold As Ice," as the album would eventually go platinum five times over. Foreigner avoided the dreaded sophomore slump with an even stronger follow-up release, 1978's Double Vision, which spawned such further hit singles as "Hot Blooded" and its title track, and the album stayed in the Top Ten for a solid six months. As a result, the album's success established the sextet as an arena headliner and would go on to become Foreigner's best-selling album of their career (selling seven million copies in the U.S. alone by 2001). The group's third release overall, Head Games, followed in 1979 and marked the first of many subsequent lineup changes for the group, as Gagliardi was replaced by ex-Peter Frampton and Roxy Music bassist Rick Wills. While the album was another big seller and turned out to be their most straight-ahead musically, both Gramm and Jones felt that the album failed to break any new ground, something that they sought to correct on their next album. The band's lineup was cut back to just a quartet consisting of Jones, Gramm, Elliot, and Wills as superproducer Mutt Lange (who was fresh off the success of AC/DC's classic Back in Black) was enlisted to oversee the proceedings. The ploy worked and the resulting 1981 release, 4, was another massive seller, spawning such further hit singles as "Urgent" (which featured a blazing sax solo from Motown vet Junior Walker), "Jukebox Hero," and the power ballad "Waiting for a Girl Like You." Although the latter tune was a massive hit, it confused some of the band's following as to whether Foreigner was a hard rock band or balladeers. In 1982, a stopgap best-of set, Records, was released and featured ten of

band's biggest hit singles, remaining a steady seller to this day (becoming Foreigner's second album to achieve sales of seven million by 2001). It took Foreigner three years to complete a follow-up to 4 with Agent Provocateur being issued in 1984. The band made the transition to the MTV video age without a hitch with the over-the-top, gospelinflected ballad "I Want to Know What Love Is" (which featured the New Jersey Mass Choir) becoming one of the biggest MTV and radio hits that year. But despite the single's success, there was a noticeable dip in sales for Agent Provocateur when compared to their earlier albums due to the fact that the album wasn't as focused and strong overall as their previous recordings. After a mammoth nine-month tour wrapped up a year later, both Jones and Gramm focused on non-Foreigner projects during 1986. Jones produced Bad Company's Fame and Fortune and co-produced Van Halen's hit debut recording with Sammy Hagar, 5150, while Gramm worked on a solo debut. The release of both Gramm's solo album, Ready or Not, as well as Foreigner's sixth studio album overall, Inside Information, came in 1987. While both were successful and spawned Top Ten hits (Gramm with "Midnight Blue" and Foreigner with "Say You Will"), tension between Gramm and Jones came to a head regarding the singer's desire to focus on his solo career, which led to Gramm's split from Foreigner in 1989. The same year as his split from Foreigner, Gramm issued his second solo album, Long Hard Look, which proved to be not as successful as its predecessor, while Jones produced Billy Joel's Storm Front and issued a star-studded self-titled solo debut. Jones, Elliot, and Wills tried to keep Foreigner afloat with a new singer, Johnny Edwards, issuing a largely ignored album in 1991, Unusual Heat, while Gramm faired no better with a new outfit, Shadow King, issuing a forgotten self-titled debut the same year. Seeing the error in their split, both Jones and Gramm listened to the advice of Atlantic Records and reunited for the recording of three all-new tracks to be included on a more extensive "hits" collection. Issued in 1992, the 17-track The Very Best...And Beyond was Foreigner's most commercially successful release in several years along with the band's first live release, Classic Hits Live, issued a year later. The Gramm/Jones reunion soon turned permanent and new members Bruce Turgon (bass) and Jeff Jacobs (keyboards) were welcomed on board. The latest version of Foreigner issued an all-new studio recording in 1995, Mr. Moonlight, which failed to return the group to the top of the charts. Foreigner remained a popular concert attraction, but the band's future was thrust into doubt in 1997 when Gramm was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Luckily, the tumor was non-cancerous and was removed shortly thereafter. Gramm's recovery was slow and painful, but by 1999, the singer was well enough for Foreigner to team up with Journey for a summer tour. The early 21st century saw the release of several archival collections courtesy of the Rhino label: a pair of additional collections, Jukebox Heroes: The Foreigner Anthology and Complete Greatest Hits, as well as reissues of the group's self-titled debut and 4, both of which included extra bonus tracks. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Just Died In Your Arms Tonight

~ Cutting Crew

Oh I, I just died in your arms tonight It must have been something you said I just died in your arms tonight I keep looking for something I can't get Broken hearts, they're all around me And I don't see an easier way, to get out of this Her diary sits by the bedside table The curtains are closed, the cat's in the cradle Who would have thought that a boy like me could come to this Oh I, I just died in your arms tonight It must have been something you said I just died in your arms tonight Oh I, I just died in your arms tonight It must have been some kind of kiss

I should have walked away I should have walked away Is there any just cause for feeling like this? On the surface I'm a name on a list I try to be discreet, but then blow it again I've lost and found it's my final mistake She's loving by proxy, no give and all take 'Cause I've been thrilled to fantasy, one too many times Oh I, I just died in your arms tonight It must have been something you said I just died in your arms tonight Oh I, I just died in your arms tonight It must have been some kind of kiss I should have walked away I should have walked away It was a long hot night, she made it easy She made it feel right But now it's over, the moment has gone I followed my hands to my head, I know I was wrong Oh I, I just died in your arms tonight It must have been something you said I just died in your arms tonight Oh I, I just died in your arms tonight It must have been some kind of kiss I should have walked away I should have walked away

Guano Apes was an alternative rock / alternative metal quartet from Germany. Their energetic mix of grunge and heavy metal made them one of the most successful German rock bands of their time. The Guano Apes were formed in 1990 in Gttingen, Germany, by guitarist Henning Rmenapp, bassist Stefan Ude and drummer Dennis Poschwatta. Lead singer Sandra Nasic joined the band in 1994. The band's career launched in 1996 after they won a contest for local unsigned band with their song "Open Your Eyes". The song was also their first and most successful single, followed by the release of their 1997 debut album Proud Like a God. Two #1 albums, Don't Give Me Names and Walking on a Thin Line, followed in 2000 and 2003, respectively. The band broke up after the release of their best of album Planet of the Apes and a final tour in 2004.

"Open Your Eyes" Hide your face forever dream and search forever Have you ever been for sale ? when your isms get smart oh so selfish and mindless with that comment in your eye Do you think that you are hard ? really harder than the other man you're acting cold if you are not in charge Don't split your mentality without thinking twice your voice has got no reason now is the time to face your lies

Open your eyes, open your mind proud like a god don't pretend to be blind trapped in yourself, break out instead beat the machine that works in your head Will you offer me some tricks if I ever need them would you go into that room if I call 'em Do you think that you are better really better than the rest realize there's a problem I know that you can give your best Have you ever had a dream? or is life just a trip? a trip without chances a chance to grow up quick Open your eyes, open your mind ... Hide your face forever dream and search forever night and night you feel nothing there's no way outside of my land Open your eyes, open your mind ...

Green Day is a band from California, consisting of Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt, and Tr Cool. Green Day is credited, along with The Offspring and Rancid, with reviving mainstream interest in punk rock in the United States during the mid 1990s.[1] According to RIAA, Green Day has sold about 60 million records worldwide including more than 21 million in the U.S. alone. Green Day has one diamond and one quadruple platinum certified album in the U.S., and have won three Grammy Awards, several MTV Video Music Awards, among other industry and fan based awards. They are also second only to the Red Hot Chili Peppers for #1 hits on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks, with 8 #1s, to the Red Hot Chili Peppers' 9.

Lookout: the beginning(19861992)

This section does not cite its references or sources. You can help Wikipedia by introducing appropriate citations. At the age of twelve, Tre Cool became a member of the band The Lookouts. Their album "One Planet One People," released in 1986, attracted some attention, and Tr began performing at an early age at the Berkeley, California punk-rock all-ages venue 924 Gilman Street. In 1986, Billie Joe Armstrong (aged 14) and Mike Dirnt (also aged 14) formed Sweet Children, with Armstrong on lead vocals and guitar and Dirnt on bass and backing vocals. Despite rumor to the contrary, John Kiffmeyer (a.k.a. Al Sobrante) was not a part of this endeavor. Their first show was on October 17, 1988, at Rod's Hickory Pit in Vallejo, California where Armstrong's mother was working. In 1989, Kiffmeyer's band Isocracy broke up. Kiffmeyer sought out Armstrong and Dirnt to form Green Day, while other members went on to form Samiam. Lawrence "Larry" Livermore, who played guitar for The Lookouts and ran the Berkeley independent label Lookout! Records, offered the band a record deal after having the band play. The band, he said, played like "The Beatles at Shea Stadium", according to Livermore's biography of the band on Lookout! Records' web page. In early 1989 they recorded their first EP, 1,000 Hours. The first Green Day show was played at Contra Costa College in San Pablo where Kiffmeyer attended as a journalism student. In 1990, I.R.S. Records attempted to recruit Green Day, but they made it clear that they were loyal to Lookout! Records and that I.R.S. was a "cheesy" and "washed up" label[2]. They recorded two other EPs this year; Slappy and Sweet Children, which included some older songs for the Minneapolis, Minnesota indie label Skene! Records. In 1991, 1,039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours was released, which included both 39/Smooth as well as the tracks from Slappy and 1,000 Hours. In mid 1990, Al Sobrante left the band temporarily to attend college in Arcata, California, shortly after the band's first tour. By this time the Lookouts had become mostly inactive, and Tr Cool, now 17 and living in Berkeley, began playing with Green Day as a temporary replacement that hasn't left. In January 1992 they wrote and recorded their second album, Kerplunk!, releasing it on Lookout! Records. Touring through 1992 and 1993, expanded to Europe. [edit]

Mainstream success with Dookie (19931995)

The band began recording demos of their new material, and eventually they left Lookout and signed with Reprise Records. Signing to Reprise caused some problems, as they had long since said [citation needed] that they would never sign to a major label. Reflecting on the period, Armstrong told SPIN magazine in 1999, "I couldn't go back to the punk scene, whether we were the biggest success in the world or the biggest failure ... The only thing I could do was get on my bike and go forward."[3]. They spent the greater part of the year recording their major label debut, Dookie. Released in February of 1994, Dookie was a commercial sensation, helped by extensive MTV airplay for the videos "Longview", "When I Come Around", and "Basket Case". That year Green Day embarked on a nationwide tour with queercore band Pansy Division as their opening act. The band also joined the lineups of both the Lollapalooza Festival and Woodstock 1994. In 1995 Green Day recorded a single called "J.A.R." for the Angus movie soundtrack, and followed it up with the album Insomniac in the fall of 1995. It was a darker response to the poppy simplicity of Dookie. Though the album didn't approach the success of Dookie, it still sold two million copies in the United States. The band abruptly cancelled a European tour, claiming exhaustion.[citation needed]

[edit]

nimrod. (19961998)
Following Insomniac, Green Day was back in the studio by 1996, at work on a new album. The result was nimrod., an experimental deviation from the band's classic poppunk brand of music. This new album, released to mainly positive reviews and mixed fan response in October 1997[citation needed], provided a variation of sound from upbeat poppunk to acoustic ballads. Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" from this album was the official theme for the 1998 PGA Golf Tour The band stated that they wanted to take some time off[citation needed] to be with their families and enjoy life, and so Green Day took a two year break. [edit]

Warning: (20002002)
In 2000, they released Warning:, a step further in the style that they had hinted at with nimrod. The album's recording was marked by bandmembers' significant reduction of marijuana intake, which had marked most of their adult lives. Critics' reviews of the album were mixed, some of them deeming the album simply mediocre. Though it produced the #1 hit "Minority" and a smaller hit with "Warning", some observers were coming to the conclusion that the band was losing relevance, and a decline in popularity followed. While all of Green Day's past albums had reached a status of at least double platinum, Warning: was only certified gold. Although the band felt this

was some of their strongest work to date, the lack of success fueled questions regarding the band's future, not only from fans but by the band members also. The release of a Greatest Hits compilation, International Superhits!, and the token complementary assemblage of B-sides, Shenanigans, only fueled the theory that Green Day's career was on the rocks. A 2002 co-headlining tour with blink-182 helped to resurrect some of the band's popularity, and earned the group many positive concert reviews. The band decided to take some time off after the Pop Disaster Tour closed, to spend time with their families and, ultimately, to decide whether maintaining the band was in anybodys best interest anymore. [edit]

American Idiot and Bullet in a Bible (20032005)

Fighting burnout after Warning:, the band went into a studio to write and record new material for an album, believed to be titled Cigarettes and Valentines. After completing 20 tracks, the master tapes were stolen from the studio. The band, understandably upset, chose not to try to re-create the stolen album (Armstrong feared that it would take their fan base "back to about 50"), but instead started over with a vow to be even better than before. In addition, they underwent serious "band therapy," engaging in several long talks to work out the members' differences after accusations from Dirnt and Cool that Armstrong was "the band's Nazi"[4] and a show-off bent on taking the limelight from the other band members. After a restoration of band democracy, the creative floodgates opened as well, with each member trying different things every day in the studio most notably the creation of two 9-minute tracks for the forthcoming Green Day record. Billie Joe also stated he previously feared playing "corny" guitar solos if he let loose, but eventually decided "I'm gonna play the fucking thing..."[5] on this album whenever needed, showing his new-found courage. The resulting 2004 album, American Idiot, debuted at #1 on the Billboard charts, the band's first ever album to reach #1, backed by the success of the album's first single, "American Idiot." The album was billed as a "punk rock opera"[5] which follows the journey of the fictitious "Jesus of Suburbia".Also the album marked a significant growth in the band as musicians. On the background of their pop punk landmark albums Kerplunk and Dookie, American Idiot was noted by critics as far more mature and musically eclectic than the latters and is often cited as their best work to date. Another noticeable difference was the members of the band having discarded their trademark instruments. Billie Joe Armstrong changed his guitar from the replicas of the Fender Stratocaster Copy he had been playing since the age of 10 to a Gibson Les Paul Jr.. Armstrong does however continue to use his Strat copy at some point in every live show. Mike Dirnt used his Gibson G-3 bass guitar for several of their albums leading up to Nimrod, but now plays a custom Fender Precision Bass. Exact duplicates of his guitar are made by Fender, and they are called the Mike Dirnt Precision Bass. Tr Cool also severed his longtime association with Slingerland, which he had been using since Nimrod years, and started using Ludwig-Musser drums.

American Idiot also marked a major change of image. While in the past they had dyed their hair in different colors (ranging from red to green to pink and back again) and appeared in mostly variegated clothes, here they started wearing fitted black shirts with skinny neckties and also dyed their hair in more plain colours like platinum and black. Also, Tre and Billie Joe began wearing eyeliner during media appearances. American Idiot won a Grammy in 2005 for "Best Rock Album" and was nominated for 5 other Grammy awards. The song "American Idiot" was featured in the video game Madden NFL 2005 and "Holiday" in the game Tony Hawk's American Wasteland, in which Billie Joe Armstrong is also an unlockable character. The music video for "American Idiot" was voted 'The Greatest Rock Video Ever' in a Kerrang! Magazine Poll. In the Australian Triple J's Hottest 100 for 2005, Jesus of Suburbia entered at #61 making it the longest song ever to place in the chart at 9 minutes and 8 seconds. Green Day also won two Kids Choice Awards Blimps in 2006 for Favorite Musical Group and Favorite Song (Wake Me Up When September Ends). Through 2005, the band toured, promoting the album with about 150 dates their longest tour in their career visiting Japan, Australia South America and England where they drew a crowd of 130,000 people over two days - one of the largest crowds ever drawn for a rock concert. This tour continued the theatrics of the shows from the Warning: and Shenanigans tours by featuring a horn section dressed as a pink rabbit and a bumblebee, Armstrong donning a crown and silk cape for the song "King For A Day," and drawn-out performances of certain songs like "Hitchin' a Ride" and "Minority", where Armstrong used the instrumental sections to make popcorn with the crowd, a staple of Green Day's live performances. While touring for American Idiot, they filmed and recorded the two concerts at the Milton Keynes National Bowl in England, which was voted 'The Best Show On Earth' in a Kerrang! Magazine Poll. These recordings were released as a live CD and DVD called Bullet in a Bible on November 15, 2005. This CD/DVD featured hits from American Idiot as well as older songs from Dookie among others. The DVD featured behind the scenes footage of the band, and showed how the band prepared to put on the show. The final shows of their 2005 world tour were in Sydney, Australia and Melbourne, Australia on December 14 and 17 respectively (where, eerily enough, the show saw small bursts of rain during "Wake Me Up When September Ends", an odd occurance for the Australian mid-summer). On January 10, 2006 the band was awarded with a People's Choice Award for favorite group. On August 1, 2005, it was announced that Green Day had rescinded the master rights to their pre-Dookie material from Lookout! Records, citing breach of contract regarding unpaid royalties that had been ongoing for some time, and with other Lookout! bands as well. As of October 2005, it is unknown whether a label affiliated with the band (Reprise, Armstrong's own Adeline), a reissue specialist like Rhino, or another label entirely will reissue the Lookout!-era material. As a result of Green Day reclaiming the masters from Lookout! Records, the independent label laid off two thirds of its nineperson staff and delayed its new release plans for the rest of 2005. [edit]

Next album (2006)

The band has emerged from their half year rest and said that they are working through demos and new songs. In an interview with MTV News on June 2 Green Day said that their next album will be "an event" when it is released. Billie Joe Armstrong stated, "At this point, to put a record out with like 12 songs on it and turn it in sounds a bit boring for us. So we want to definitely make something that is well thought-out and [that] all of our blood is put into."[6] They, no matter, what are still sellouts. - Andrew K [edit]

The Network
Main article: The Network In 2003, during time Green Day spent in the studio, a New Wave band appeared on the scene, known as The Network. Three of five members of the band are allegedly the

three members of Green Day. The frontman, known only as "Fink", is Billie Joe Armstrong. Armstrong has referred to himself as Wilhelm Fink in the past, and a Pinhead Gunpowder fansite bio of Billie Joe Armstrong confirms Fink's identity. Armstrong's voice is also unmistakable on The Network's albums. The Network's bass player, known as "Van Gough," is Mike Dirnt; and The Network's drummer, "The Snoo," is thought to be Tr Cool. John Roecker, director of Live Freaky Die Freaky, starring Green Day and other East Bay punk alumni, and Green Day's DVD Documentary Heart Like a Hand Grenade, has spoken of various projects recorded at Studio 880, including a New Wave album and a Christmas album, during the sessions of their latest album. Studio 880 is the credited studio in The Network's Money Money 2020 album and Green Day's American Idiot. No official connection has been made between the two bands, and both bands have defended, sometimes aggressively (in a probably staged press conference where some members from both bands engaged in a heated argument then broke out in a minor conflict), the lack of connection between the two. Green Day's management has always declined to comment on the ongoing situation between Green Day and The Network. On October 6 The Network agreed to support Green Day with Jimmy Eat World on the American Idiot tour. Sources close to Green Day have been quoted as commenting "that's a really bad idea" and "can we just make them go away?"[1] The end of the American Idiot tour saw The Network support Green Day three times, along with Jimmy Eat World, playing the opening slot. [edit]

American Idiot: The Motion Picture

In 2005, a 14-minute video for "Jesus of Suburbia" was completed, as well as a live video for "St. Jimmy." The video of "Jesus of Suburbia" is stated to be a prequel to their upcoming film, American Idiot: The Motion Picture. In an interview with Billboard magazine, Billie Joe Armstrong revealed that the group are still considering turning their punk rock opera into a film, in much the same spirit as the Beatles' Yellow Submarine, Marillion's Brave, Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and the Who's Tommy. Shooting of the movie is planned to start in 2006.[6] The band has stated they have no intentions of acting in the movie, although they may make an appearance. Lou Taylor Pucci and Kelli Garner from the "Jesus of Suburbia" music video could make an appearance if the motion picture does go into production. [edit]

Charity events
Green Day performed at 1999 Bridge School Benefit. Armstrong was part of ensemble of musicians that sang The Beatles' "Across the Universe" at the 47th Grammy Awards as part of tsunami relief. The band also pledged to give the profits from the downloading of Boulevard of Broken Dreams to tsunami relief.

Green Day performed at the Live 8 concert on July 2, 2005 in Berlin, Germany, where they played "Holiday," "American Idiot," "Minority" and a rendition of Queen's "We Are the Champions." The band also contributed a prerecorded performance to the Hurricane Katrina Benefit relief event on September 10, 2005 from their performance the prior week at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts. The televised portion (shown on MTV and VH1) showed the trio performing their single "Wake Me Up When September Ends." [edit]

"Basket Case" Do you have the time To listen to me whine About nothing and everything All at once I am one of those Melodramatic fools Neurotic to the bone No doubt about it Sometimes I give myself the creeps Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me

It all keeps adding up I think I'm cracking up Am I just paranoid? Or I'm just stoned I went to a shrink To analyze my dreams She says it's lack of sex That's bringing me down I went to a whore He said my life's a bore So quit my whining cause It's bringing her down Sometimes I give myself the creeps Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me It all keeps adding up I think I'm cracking up Am I just paranoid? Uh, yuh, yuh, ya Grasping to control So I better hold on Sometimes I give myself the creeps Sometimes my mind plays tricks on me It all keeps adding up I think I'm cracking up Am I just paranoid? Or I'm just stoned
