Blown away at Claremont Unified School District

readers comments
Its completely bananas
Dear Editor: After giving my 5-year-old son a banana the other day, I was surprised to hear Dad, buy me that, in response. It turns out that the Chiquita bananas being sold locally by Stater Bros. and Sprouts come with ads stuck on them, currently hawking a Wii video game. The Stater Bros. produce manager assured me there was nothing to be done: the suppliers put the stickers on, and there is only one source for bananas, he said. I discovered that the Dole bananas for sale at Albertsons, Vons and Trader Joes come without ads, for now anyway. I dont think it is too much to ask to be able to give at least a piece of fresh fruit to our kids without having to worry about commercial advertising. A little pressure from the community might persuade Stater Bros. and Sprouts to change suppliers or request ad-free produce.

Dear Editor: After reading the Readers Comments in Saturdays COURIER on November 20, I felt compelled to set the record straight. The writer states she encountered Barrios & Associates using a gas-powered leaf lower. True enough, except their blower was actually a weed eater, legal to use in Claremont, which included a leaf blower attachment to it. The owner of Barrios thought that utilizing this device was up to standard. Subsequent to CUSD being made aware of this incident at Condit Elementary, I called the city of Claremont Code Enforcement department to verify the legality of this piece of equipment that was in question. Once they gave us information pertaining to this specific machinery, I provided Henry Barrios with this information and asked that his company not use it any longer. He assured me they would not use that particular blower in our district. So in a nutshell, CUSD staff will not use gas blowers after we were made aware that our Billy goat blowers were unacceptable by the city. Please let me inform the citizens, students and parents of Claremont, CUSD does care. In addition, I would also like to let everyone know that the service center staff custodians, as well as all of our employees throughout our district, first and foremost want to provide a safe and aesthetically pleasing environment for our students and staff. Im not sure about the comment regarding tickets for children at Condit, but I am sure their staff also wants the best when it comes to their students and parents. As a CUSD employee I know we are under the publics microscope, just remember, we do care and most definitely do listen to all of our citizens of Claremont. New president brings wealth of experience to CGU

ith her obligations at Syracuse University finally completed, new Claremont Graduate University President Deborah Freund has finally arrived in Claremont.
Ms. Freund became the universitys 15th president when she took office on November 15th. She is also CGUs first female president in the schools 85-year history. Its been fantastic, said Ms. Freund, regarding her first week as president. Everybody has been really friendly and people have been coming up to me asking, Are you the new president? I had a conversation in Starbucks with somebody who came up to me and wanted to talk. Right now, Im trying to meet people on the CGU campus and get to know them personally, as well as understand the programs better. The CGU Board of Trustees announced Ms. Freund as the new president in July, bringing to an end a search process that began in February 2009 following former CGU President Robert Klitgaards resignation. Interim president Joseph Hough filled the vacancy for 21 months before his term concluded on November 12th. According to CGU Board of Trustees Chairman Donald Baker, Ms. Freunds background will benefit the graduate institution. Professor Freund personifies the 85-year tradition of dedication to academic excellence in research and teaching that is CGUs hallmark, he said. As an internationally recognized scholar and sought-after expert in the field of health care policies and economics, she will have a decidedly positive impact on CGUs students and faculty. We are fortunate that she will bring extensive administrative experience to her service as president of Claremont Graduate University.

Before coming to Claremont, Ms. Freund served as vice chancellor and provost at Syracuse University and was also a distinguished professor of public administration of economics for the universitys Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs. She also served as associate dean for academic affairs and chair of the Health Sciences and Administration Faculty at Indiana University-Bloomington prior to her stint at Syracuse.
Ms. Freunds educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree in classics from Washington University (St. Louis), a Master of Public Health degree in medical care administration from the University of Michigan School of Public Health, a Master of Arts degree in Applied Economics from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in economics from the same school. The new CGU president said that she enjoyed being a professor and did not think she would continue in administration. I never thought I would ever be here, she said. I was focused on my research career. Then somebody out of the blue told me I should go into administration [at Syracuse]. I ended up going back to the faculty the last 4 years and never thought I would be here again. But CGU was unique. Its really outstanding and its excellence was what attracted me. What captured my attention was the transdisciplinary nature of the universitythat the different departments all want to work together. Ms. Freund said she has ideas regarding how she would like the see the university move forward. But

COURIER photo/Steven Felschundneff Renowned health economist and educator Deborah Freund began her new job as president of the Claremont Graduate University this week. Before joing the staff of CGU Ms. Freund was a distinguished professor of public administration and economics at the Maxwell School of Syracuse University and an adjunct professor of orthopedics and pediatrics at Upstate Medical University.

the CGU president is more adamant about decisions on the campus being made collectively. Our vision should come from campus dialogue on how to take our excellence forward, Ms. Freund said. It needs to be a community decision. I come in with ideas but our decisions need to be community decisions. What a leader is supposed to do is ask questions to point people in a direction but the leader cannot force the direction. As for being the universitys first female president, Ms. Freund hopes she can serve as an inspiration to others.

To the extent that it motivates other women, people of color and the underrepresentedIm proud of it, she said. Im proud to be able to showcase anything positive. For myself, its just about doing the right things and leading with excellence.

Mother Nature slowed the balls, but not the fun

Over 100 people braved the stormy weather Saturday afternoon to watch hundreds of tennis balls racing down a Village alleyway. There was some luck just before the 4 p.m. start of the race, as the rain stopped and the clouds parted briefly to reveal slivers of blue sky. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Claremont, the event raised money for the Claremont Community Foundation, Claremont Education Foundation and the Rotary Club.

here was more splashing and sloshing than running and rolling. But the rainy weather did not deter participants in the first annual Running of the Balls charity event from having a great time.

Elizabeth Tulac sports a humorous jacket as she helps dry the course on Saturday during the Running of the Balls. After a day of rain the Village alley where the event took place had standing water which had to be removed so that the balls would make it to the finish line. Ms. Tulacs jacket, which was the color of a tennis ball said Fast and Fuzzy.

early 500 tennis balls were sold ahead of the event. The balls were dropped from the tilted bed of a tow truck in the alley behind Sacas Mediterranean Restaurant on Second Street. The fastest 3 balls to make the 275-yard journey to the finish line on First Street won big prizes. Rotarians tried their best to keep the racetrack dry ahead of the afternoon event. They brushed away rainwater and even used leafblowers to dry up the tennis ball track. Despite their best efforts, Mother Nature prevailed. The wet track slowed down the water-soaked tennis balls before more than a few were able to reach the finish line. Onlookers got a chance to join the action to help kept the race moving. People began kicking and throwing the balls down the track. The leaf blowers were used to get the balls rolling. The first ball to cross the line was purchased by Sonja Stump. Ms. Stump nearly didnt have enough cash for the one ball she purchased. A customer came into her store late Friday and used cash for a transaction. So she took the money and bought her winning ball, earning her $1,000 in Village dollars. I never win anything so this was really exciting, Ms. Stump said. It comes after many years of buying unsuccessful raffle tickets. Second prize of $500 Village dollars went to Jim Wilson and third of $250 Village dollars went to Carol Rouland. With the success of the event, organizers want to keep it running next year and plan to schedule it in the dryer months of summer. It was a great turnout and a lot of fun, said organizer Paul Steffen. The Press was a very hospitable host in letting us use their space to celebrate afterwards when we got rained out. The Village businesses were very generous in putting together these great gift baskets. Everyone was laughing and cheering and having a good time. It made for a wonderful afternoon.

Bust a few buttons

by Freeman Allen

n 1954, when I came here to join the chemistry faculty at Pomona College, Claremont was a fine place to live but there was one huge problem: air pollution. Lungs burned, eyes smarted. Our abundant summer sun cooked exhaust from cars and air pollutants from industry into an awful brew of noxious SMOG, trapped by the surrounding mountains.
After WW II, as the Southland prospered and population grew, the problem got steadily worse. The South Coast Air Quality Management District was created to control pollutants from stationary sources and the California Air Resources Board to control those from cars and other mobile sources. Industrial sources were required to reduce emissions. Catalytic converters were added to automobiles. SMOG CHECK was created. It worked. In spite of our ever-growing industries and population (our South Coast Basin now has about 1/500 of the worlds population) the air is much cleaner throughout the state. We can be proud of that. But another sort of air pollution, much more insidious and far-reaching, is on the rise. Carbon dioxide from burning carbon-based fuels such as gasoline, oil, coal, wood, and natural gas is build-

ing up in the atmosphere, trapping the suns heat, and warming the earth. California cannot solve the climate problem for the world, but we can take pride that our state is a world leader in its plan to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and even more pride that Claremont is in the forefront of cities addressing this issue. Mary Nichols, Chair of the California Air Resources Board, said:With targets now largely in place, local officials will be weaving a web of policies that will link land use, housing and transportation together for the first time. For some communities, the state measure that requires this simply puts brighter lights, signposts and some handrails along the path theyve been pursuing voluntarily for years.Claremont is one of these communities. In California, the amount of energy consumed in buildings is second only to that used in transportation. We are doing something about that right here, right now, in our fair city. The Claremont Home Energy Retrofit Project (CHERP), led by Devon Hartman and City Sustainability Coordinator Chris

Veirs, and co-chaired by Freeman Allen, is a working group of Sustainable Claremont. This project aimed at reducing energy consumption in homes is becoming a recognized model for other communities. As population grows, water conservation is becoming increasingly critical. Sustainable Claremonts Water Action Group, chaired by Dick Haskell, is well along in planning for a water reclamation plant that will provide irrigation water for the Claremont Colleges. The Constructed Landscape Action Group led by Weston Westenborg has just introduced a program to certify local home landscapes as sustainable in terms of energy, water, and other resource use. Energy, water, population, and climate are intimately related. Our next Sustainability Dialog will be about The Regions Water Problems and How to Solve Them (December 6, 7:00 pm, the Hahn Building, 420 N. Harvard Avenue). All of us should be proud of Claremonts leadership in increasing energy and water conservation. This is in large part due to the efforts of many individuals working for the common good. We invite you to join other Claremont residents and Sustainable Claremont and add to our Sustainability Pride!

CEF and Misners team up to help CUSD

he Claremont Educational Foundation raised more than $23,000 at the kick-off of its 2010-11 Annual Enrichment Campaign on Friday night.
has teamed up with the Misners BNI Foundation. The foundationwhich supports childrens educational programs domestically and globally matched CEF donations raised on Friday evening. We usually do an event a month with a different organization each month but tonight is about Claremont, Ms. Misner said. We support children and we support education. CEF supports CUSD each year through fundraising efforts. While the organization normally contributes an average of $100,000 to the district annually, the foundation donated a check for $303,000 to the district on September 2nd as the result of a successful $365 Get on the Bus campaign earlier this year.

Claremont Unified School District representatives, along with teachers, parents and other CEF contributors came together for a special reception at the home of Ivan and Beth Misner that honored Claremont Toyota and the Hogan Family, allowed Claremont High School Spanish language teachers to showcase iPod language applications and helped to raise money towards CEFs annual campaign. Were so thankful to the Misners for their generous financial support and opening their home to us each year, said CEF President Liz Weigand. And it is the support of businesses like Claremont Toyota, as well as the support of each of our donors, that help us provide quality education to our kids. The event marked the 7th year CEF

One of CEFs latest fundraisers has the organization partnering with Claremont Toyota for a Toyota Prius Raffle. The Hogan Family donated a Prius to CEF in order for the organization to continue raising money during a tough economic climate. The winner of the raffle will be announced on January 30, 2011. Claremont has been good to us weve built our business in Claremont, said Claremont Toyota owner Roger Hogan. We recognize that the schools are not getting the money that they need [from the state] and we just want to do whatever we can to help. CHS Spanish language-teachers Korina Gonzalez, Wendy Reeder and Aide Suarez, along with CUSD Technology Coordinator Cheryl Fiello, demonstrated how iPods could be used to enhance language skills in the classroom. The iPods were implemented this year and are one of many examples of how CEFs contributions go toward increasing technology in classrooms. Using programs such as Conjugation

Nation and having students record themselves speaking the language are 2 ways the teachers are hoping technology can help students further grasp the foreign language. I use the iPods about 2 to 3 times a week in my class, Ms. Reeder said. I think that my students are getting more confident because not only are they using the technology but it also allows them to teach each other as well. Ms. Gonzalez added that the technology also results in teachers sometimes learning alongside students as well. Weve been going like mad trying to figure out what apps would be useful for the students, she said. They really get into it and when they record their voices, theyll do it repeatedly because they want to pronounce the words correctly. Im learning from them all the time. Nancy H. Welsh
teacher, homemaker, consummate hostess
Nancy Holman Welsh died in her sleep at her Claremont Manor home on November 17, 2010. Age 85, she died of age-related causes after struggling for many years with a variety of ailments, including osteoporosis and neuropathy that had left her wheelchair-bound for the past 10 years. Born in Brentwood, Mrs. Welsh was raised on Balboa Island in Newport Beach where she attended Newport Elementary School and Newport High School. She then graduated from Pomona College in 1947. At Pomona, she met Stanton Pete Welsh who was attending Claremont Mens College (now Claremont McKenna College). They were married in 1948 and settled in Claremont, first living briefly on Oak Park Drive and then settling on Bates Place in Faculty Park where they lived for 42 years. Together, they raised 6 boys: Stan, Fred, Steve, Henry, Doug and John, all of whom survive her. For several years after college, Mrs. Welsh taught second grade in Chino, but ultimately retired to the position of homemaker, mother and wife. Assisting her husband in his highly social job as vice president for college relations at Claremont McKenna College contributed in large part to the success of many college fundraising campaigns. As a hostess at many professional gatherings at her home, her skills were extraordinary. In addition, her many friends remember her unflagging participation in fundraisers, community enrichment projects and particularly her inspirational prayer meetings. Family shared that Mrs. Welsh was a devout born again Pentecostal Christian whose strong faith was an inspiration to others. Mrs. Welsh loved the ocean and water in general, having grown up swimming in Newport Bay and the Pacific Ocean. For many years, she spent summers at Lake Woahink in Oregon where the family has owned a cabin since 1965. She loved the tall pines, the sand dunes and the seclusion, but most of all, she delighted in her daily swim in the cove at her cherished A Fir Peace forest retreat. Mrs. Welsh also spent many vacations in Hawaii in a condo on the water in Kona, enjoying the warm waters of Magic Sands Beach. In addition to her husband and children, Mrs. Welsh is survived by 9 grandchildren and a great-grandchild on the way. A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at the Claremont Manor, 650 W. Harrison St.

Barbara E. Haner
A memorial service for Claremont resident Barbara Elizabeth Haner will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 5, 2010 at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, 1500 N. College Ave., Claremont.
