Doing our best

Dear Editor: I agree with Landus Rigsbythe community is not the enemy when it comes to the challenges we face in Claremont schools. I would venture to guess that neither of the teachers quoted in his opinion piece view the community in that way. Can we also just make it clear that the teachers and the district are not the enemy, either? Everyone is doing their best to get through these horrible, horrible times for public education.

have a common agenda: to support public education in Claremont. Although the COURIER covered views of both proponents and opponents, many of the questions raised by the latter in your Readers Comments and Viewpoint sections remained unanswered. In future referenda involving local issues of this sort, might the COURIER select an articulate advocate of each side and publish in a column their brief responses to questions raised by the other side in the weeks leading up to the election? An objective reading of the answers may bring the two sides to a better understanding of the other and closer to agreement. Second, proponents of Measure CL indicated a variety of needs of the schools. Might the district disaggregate the categories of needs and spell-out in more specific form what the community might provide, so that individuals, organizations and businesses might undertake projects to supply or repair what is needed? Such a specific wish list might serve as an incentive for both opponents and proponents of Measure CL to turn their attention to what most of those involved on both sides want, i.e., a good educational system for our community. The defeat of Measure CL was the defeat of a means to an end. Opponents of the measure have made clear that they support the end. Our challenge now is to find better means to that end.

Yeah, right. 2. Please mention our book club, the Claremont Library Book Club. First Friday at 10 a.m. All are welcome. Thanks for reading.

Aftermath of the defeat of the school bond

Dear Editor: The interpretation of the meaning of the defeat of the bond provided by your reporter, Landus Rigsby, is very reasonable. (COURIER, Wednesday, November 10). The persistence of the accusation raised by some proponents of the school bond that most of those who have actively opposed it do not care about public education in Claremont is not only a false one, but one likely to undermine future efforts to help our schools. So, what can be done? As a start to answering this question, I have two suggestions: First, what the campaign for Measure CL seems to have done is to divide two groups in our community both of which

March city council election begins to take shape

resh off one big city election, another is just around the corner. The Claremont city council will have 3 open seats in the March 2011 municipal election.
The election is already beginning to take shape with several new and old faces announcing their intention to take part in the race. Seats held by Mayor Linda Elderkin, Mayor Pro Tem Sam Pedroza and Councilmember Peter Yao will be up for grabs. Both Mr. Pedroza and Mr. Yao plan to seek second and third terms, respectively. Ms. Elderkin does not plan to run for a second term. Mr. Pedroza was the top vote getter in the 2007 election with 7 candidates vying for 3 open seats. I want to finish up some of the things I started, Mr. Pedroza said. Four years is a relatively short time to do that. His top priority is to get a supermarket open in south Claremont, which has been without a neigh-

borhood market since Albertsons closed in early 2007. The economic downturn really put a stall on that effort, but I feel were on track and making progress, he said. Mr. Yao has already served 2 terms on the council. In the 2003 election, Mr. Yao earned the most votes by a landslide and his large base of support carried him to a second winning bid in 2007. He said he wanted to served a third term to continue efforts on pension reform that have recently become a higher priority for the city council. This is just now getting attention at the council level, Mr. Yao said. And its the biggest problem the city faces. I want to be there to see a good solution to it. Several challengers hope to unseat the incumbents and have begun pulling papers from city hall. Ed Leavell, who has served 2 terms on the citys Human Services Commission, picked up his papers from the city clerk on Monday. Mr. Leavell has worked on the Forth of July committee and is an ac-

tive member of the Claremont Kiwanis. Chair of the Architectural Commission Robin Haulman has also announced her intention to run. A lawyer and a 12-year resident of Claremont, Ms. Haulman has served on the commission since 2002 and has been chair for the last 3 years. Opanyi Nasiali, a former city council candidate in 2003 and 2007, said he plans to pull papers for the council race. Mr. Nasiali was a key figure in the group Claremont Taxpayers for Common Sense that opposed the Measure CL school bond. He also currently serves on the citys Ad Hoc Committee for Economic Development. Another potential candidate is Michael Keenan, who has run unsuccessfully in previous years. Mr. Keenan announced at a recent city council meeting his intention to run again in the upcoming election. Candidates interested in running in the 2011 election must file papers by Monday, December 13. The election will take place on March 8.

Elderkin moves on to new life pursuits

ayor Linda Elderkin has announced she will not be running for a second term of office in the upcoming city council election. After serving 4 years representing Claremont, Ms. Elderkin said she is ready to move on to a new phase of her life.
I am not at all discouraged or worn out, Ms. Elderkin said. But I am at a point in my life where I would like to do many other things. I have grandchildren, my husband may be retiring soon and we would like to travel, and I have writing projects that have been on hold for the last 4 years. The 36-year Claremont resident ran for city council in 2007 with several specific goals in mind. Many have been accomplished, she said, but others still need work. Ms. Elderkin wanted to promote sustainability in Claremont, move forward with Padua Park and affordable housing and change the culture on the city council. At that time, the council ceased to function in a civil and courteous manner, Ms. Elderkin said. We needed to get back to a decision making body that was respectful and where members were not making personal attacks. I think we accomplished that and Im very grateful to my fellow council members for achieving that. During her 4-year tenure, the council approved a lease for the renovation of Padua Hills Theater, issued bonds for the purchase of Johnsons Pasture, began construction of Padua Park, created a sustainability plan and approved the College Avenue affordable housing project. But more needs to be done, she said. The city still does not have a grocery store in south Claremont, another priority of hers 4 years ago. There are options at both Pepper Tree Square and the Claremont Promenade Shopping Center on Auto Center Drive, but neither is set in stone. The council and city staff have been working ex-

tremely hard on getting this done, Ms. Elderkin said. Its one of our top priorities. She also believes the city should secure more open space adjacent to Johnsons Pasture called the Cuevas property. There is a limited timeframe on purchasing the 158-acre property, Ms. Elderkin said, and the city needs to act quickly. Ms. Elderkin was faced with several contentious issues and difficult decisions during her tenure. Chief among them were the Base Line Road affordable housing project, the medical marijuana debate and tackling multiple budget deficits amidst the economic downturn. Ms. Elderkin said she was planning to vote in favor of the Base Line Road project, meaning it had the support of at least 3 city council members. But the final vote never took place. The project was no longer eligible for county money after a last minute change in funding requirements barred funding of projects located close to freeways. On medical marijuana, Ms. Elderkin was criticized by advocates for changing positions after initially supporting the opening of a dispensary in Claremont. She switched sides on the debate after hearing from the city attorney about the difficulties involved in regulating the dispensaries. I realized that when the city is placed between the state and the federal governments, the outcome is unpredictable and unmanageable, she said. Ms. Elderkin hopes that whatever council takes over in March, it will work together harmoniously and keep the big picture in mind when making decisions affecting the citys future. My hope is that they will really consider the long term impact of the decisions that they make, Ms. Elderkin said. It can become so easy to take each issue individually without considering how they will shape the future of our town as a whole. When the council does that successfully, then we can preserve, protect and nurture the Claremont that we all love.

Harvey Mudd student out puzzles the competition

arvey Mudd College junior Palmer Mebane has seen the fruits of his hard work. After not qualifying for the United States World Puzzle Championship team last year, the Virginia native not only qualified this year but also helped his team capture the world championship last month in Poland.
The team consisted of Mr. Mebane, 2-time Sudoku champion Thomas Snyder, Roger Barkan and WeiHwa Huang. We traveled to Poland and were there for a whole week but we competed 3 days, Mr. Mebane said. I hadnt met anyone on the team prior to that. I thought there might be a little pressure but I worked very hard to do well in the qualifying test and felt I would do well. Mr. Mebane placed 3rd in the U.S. Puzzle Championship in September earning him national status. The national competition requires participants to solve more than 20 challenging puzzles in 2 hours with the top 4 contestants making up the team that competes in the world championship. According to the Mr. Mebane, the competition started with a series of rounds where participants had to solve as many puzzles as they could within a limited period of time. Though the puzzle enthusiast did not advance to the individual playoffs, he finished 19th out of 105 total competitors. Team USA reached the team finals after posting the top score during the first 2 rounds. The other 2 finalists were Japan and Germany. The final round consisted of 4 individual puzzles, which when completed, provided clues for the final Skyscraper Sudoku puzzle. The American unit finished the individual puzzles before the other 2 opponents and ended up finishing the team puzzle 10 minutes before 2nd place Japan and 20 minutes before 3rd place Germany. It was set up so you could only make partial progress until all 4 individual puzzles were completed, Mr. Mebane recalled. We were able to finish our 4 individual puzzles pretty fast and that gave us the advantage. With last months win, the U.S. team now has won 12 gold medals in 19 world championship events. Mr. Mebane was the youngest participant on this years team.

COURIER photos/Steven Felschundneff Harvey Mudd math student Palmer Mebane works on a Slitherlink puzzle on Monday in Claremont. Mr. Mebane was part of the team representing the United States that won the 2010 World Puzzle Championships.

The world championship isnt the only distinction Mr. Mebane has received at Harvey Mudd. The mathematics major was the schools top finisher in the 2009 Putnam Mathematical Competition and was selected for a sophomore mathematics prize one year ago. That Palmer [Mebane] performed so well during his first time at a world championship is a testament to his passion and talent for problem solving, said Harvey Mudd College President Maria Klawe. Hes a very talented mathematician. Though the championship is over, Mr. Mebane continues to nurture his puzzle interests by creating and completing puzzles. His blog, entitled Melons Puzzles, contains hundreds of puzzles that he has uploaded since last year. Ive been doing puzzles ever since I was young. Ive been an addict for a long time, Mr. Mebane said.

Ive done countless puzzles and a lot of the puzzles I like are not very mainstream. I like puzzles that have logic behind them. Many of the puzzles I create on the blog are inspired by other puzzles that Ive done. Mr. Mebane believes the blog played a role in his improved performance on the national qualifying test this year. Last August [2009], I didnt do well on the U.S. qualifying test and that was one reason that I started the blog, he explained. When I first started, it was an online service where I did puzzles every day. Some of the inspiration came from different puzzles that Ive completed and I put a neat twist on them. Plus, I was able to discover other online services that were created by members of the USA team. Mr. Mebanes online puzzles can be found at mellowmelon.wordpress.com. Landus Rigsby

In a small town, a world of hope, thanks

can see South Quad from my dorm room. An amusing response, I thought. The question was What would Sarah Palin say (WWSPS)? and the text-messaged answers came up on a screen for all at the Athenaeum at Claremont McKenna College to see. I also thought the question was funny.

observer
dents and other young people dropping out of this election. Even if, also, there wasnt singing and dancing in the streets when I made my way home through the campuses, as there was on election night 2 years ago. There was plenty of singing, not to mention engagement, when I attended Scamfest a few nights later. The singing wasnt in the streetsit was in Bridges Auditoriumbut it very well might have been. Now in its 15th year, Scamfestthe Southern California A Cappella Music Festivalis a concert featuring a number of college a cappella groups, some of which are semi-professional, having put out albums, performed on television, etc. It is put on by the Claremont Shades, but, as this concert showed, there are a number of these groups at the colleges. They have names like the 9th Street Hooligans, the After School Specials and, with its fancy pants, literally, Midnight Echo. This years concert also featured four groups from UCLA and USC. Imagine. Kids getting together, on their own, to sing, just sing, without any guitars and drums and all that. Whats more, theyre good. Really good. And this was no choir concert, and there were no sleepy, mellow, mumbled songs. These students, who clearly spend considerable time practicing and honing their craft, delivered complex, smooth, kick-ass versions of songs by such artists as Beyonce, A Fine Frenzy, Coldplay, Toto, Lady Gaga, Kings of Leon and Lady Antebellum. Who needs Glee? These kids rock, singing with all their hearts. Even more remarkable was the audience, which was huge, nearly filling the cavernous hall, and made up mostly of students. And not only were

But this evening wasnt about bashing Sarah Palin. Nor was it about being snarky, at least not necessarily. The screen was one of two flanking a much larger one showing CNNs live coverage of election night earlier this month. Most of the questions on the side screens were serious (Who was the best president ever? Will Harry Reid win Nevada?), and many of the answersflip bantering asidewere serious, passionate, if not deeply thought out. Many thumbs were definitely busy, and I think the text message screens were an ingenious touch in this colleges setting where the students all but live their lives on smart phones and other devices. And it was most appropriate for this evening that was about engagement, public and civic engagement. Not only thumbs were engaged. The dining tables were crowded and abuzz, at least for a while, and each appeared to be devoted to a candidate. I saw a few signs for Meg Whitman, another one for Gavin Newsom and one for Barbara Boxer. Behind me, I heard a couple guys speculating on the U.S Senate race in Pennsylvania. This was hard-core engagement, I thought, even for CMC (known for their study of politics as well as business), but then it occurred to me that they may well have been from Pennsylvania and wondering what was going on back at home (they could have voted absentee in that election). Even so, the students were very much engaged, with their thumbs and otherwise. This wasnt the news I had heard and kept hearing about college stu-

these thousands of kids at an a cappella concert, they were cheering. More than that, they were whooping and holleringalmost stealing the show from the singers with their enthusiasm. Friends said that the excitement was infectious and left a warm feeling. I agreed, saying that the concert was like a pep rally. For music, one of my friends said, laughing. Maybe this isnt so surprising, since, as seen recently in these pages, these students can get excited over a clock tower. It was the same week as the election and the Scamfest concert or close to it when the clock tower on the Pomona College campus, near Frary Dining Hall, was re-dedicated after a long period of renovation and the bells started chiming again. The students made a fete of the occasion, celebrating for hours and with some wearing large clocks right out of Alice in Wonderland. We need this enthusiasm and energy in these days of dreary bickering and fighting and when things are tough for too many. We need more of this singing, not only in the halls and in the quads and in the streets but also, as happened last month, in the cemetery. Yes, there was singing in the cemeterynot sad, mourning songs but Broadway tunes and popular songs. And by high school students. Yes, a contingent from the Claremont High School spent time on a Sunday afternoon to perform for a small group of mostly older adults gathered for the annual meeting of the Friends of Oak Park Cemetery. As with the college students, both of these groupsthe singing high schoolers and the community members who keep a loving eye on Claremonts graveyard, making sure it is properly maintained and appropriately enlargedare reminders of the bounty of riches and faith that we celebrate, even in these hard times, in this season of harvest. They also inspire and give one hopehope, for example, that the people who voted down the recent school bond mean it when they say they want to help Claremont find a better way to make its public schools even better.

I dont know anything about politics but I know things are a lot more pleasant at our house now that the election is over.

Dorothea Dorle Yale

Dorothea Dorle Yale, who immigrated to the U.S. from war-torn Germany as a young woman and went on to earn a Stanford University PhD and found Pitzer Colleges German department, died on November 7, 2010 at Claremont Manor. Age 85, Ms. Yale had lived in Claremont for 40 years. Ms. Yales happy, early childhood in a suburb of Berlin, where she was born to Hans and Gerta Pietzschmann on May 27, 1925, was marked by a closeknit family that included an older sister and a much-younger brother who was subject to her fancies and strong will. What was your favorite toy as a child? Ms. Yales grandson, Brian, once asked her. My little brother, Walter, she responded. Did you ever have any pets as a child? Brian queried next. Yes, my little brother, Walter. Recalling bike rides to school and the achievement of good grades, Ms. Yales childhood memories also contain Hitler coming into power when she was 8. At this time, her father lost his job at a bank when Hitler closed all Jewish businesses. As she grew into adolescence, she observed her country changing, with peoples rights stripped away as Hitlers dictatorship took hold. World War II began and, following high school and one year of university study, 18-year-old Ms. Yale had to help with World War II efforts, which included building electric motors in a factory. At 19, in 1944, while serving as a volunteer in a Berlin hospital, an air raid alarm sounded, foretelling of bombs on the way. Scooping up 3 infants, Ms. Yale hurried to the bomb shelter, readying bandages for wounded soldiers as the bombs fell. The hospital was not hit, but her home was: and it was destroyed. Ms. Yale began living in a basement in Bavaria, working as a dental assistant and treating soldiers coming home from the frontlines. At the conclusion of WWII, Ms. Yale obtained a job translating German radio reports into English, having mastery of both languages. Her country in ruins, she filed papers to come to America and, 6 months later, the Statue of Liberty greeted her. Years later, following retirement from a long professorial career, Ms. Yale wrote 2 novels based on her life in Germany: The Fall and Rise of Angelshut, and its sequel, Angelshut Again. After first living in St. Paul, Minnesota for a period,

Pitzer College German professor, novelist, traveler

scribed Ms. Yale as complex, highlighting her intellectual curiosity and many interests, including gardening, raising orchids, listening to classical music, singing opera, attending theater performances, playing piano and bell-ringing, hearing and telling good stories, enjoying a lively party and entertaining her friends with the Charleston jig, complete with a little short outfit and beads around her neck, remembered Ms. Stromberg of Claremont. Ms. Yale took her green thumb and adoration of flora into her Pitzer office where she strung long tendrils of a potted plant in a crisscross pattern across the ceiling, creating a verdant ambiance in her academia nook. Claremont resident and longtime friend Georgeann Andrus also used the word complex to describe her friend, speaking not of her interests and hobbies but her personality, which blended her heritage with a bit of whimsy. Dorle presented somewhat stereotypical, more rigidly defined Germanic personality traits, but underneath that, she had a twinkle and a good sense of humor, said Ms. Andrus. Ms. Andrus also recalled her friends alert and tickled response when, during the last week of her life while passing time in close conversation with her, she asked Ms. Yale if she liked naughty limericks. Her eyes popped open wide, Ms. Andrus said. She always had wonderful facial expressions. Ms. Yales stepson, Michael Yale, will remember his stepmother as a really charming, smart woman who loved literature. Ms. Yale is survived by her stepchildren, Janet Yale of Lake Forest Park, Washington, Michael Yale of Laguna Beach, David Yale of Los Angeles, Linda Harris of McKinleyville and Stephen Yale of Loomis; her brother, Walter Pietzschmann of Meerbusch, Germany; her sister, Ursula Springer of New York, New York; and by her 9 step-grandchildren. A memorial service was held on November 13, 2010 at the Claremont United Church of Christ.

where she worked in the photo department of a television station, she moved to New York and began studying at the City College of New York. Graduating in 1958 and demonstrating the academic excellence of her youth, she next went to Stanford University, ultimately earning a PhD in German literature. Research for her doctoral dissertation was conducted in Germany and included reading more than 200 novels. Writing in German, Ms. Yale was the first Stanford student to complete a dissertation in a language other than English. She was very proud to wear her red robe and receive her Stanford PhD, said her grandson, Brian. After teaching at the University of San Diego and Mills College in Oakland for a few years, she was recruited to launch Pitzers German department in 1967. Shortly after arriving at the college, she met her future husband, Paul Yale, a Pomona College professor. With Mr. Yale, she traveled all throughout the U.S. and Europe, enjoying their many adventures together. Mr. Yale predeceased her in 1997 at which time she moved to Claremont Manor. Until her retirement in 1987, she taught at Pitzer, loving her work and devoting herself to her students. In addition to teaching German, Ms. Yale held a keen interest in womens issues and made Pitzer the first to formalize a major area of study in the subject. Among her many contributions during her 20-year career as a professor of German at Pitzer was as one of the founding members of the Study of Woman, now known as Gender and Feminist Studies, said Pitzer College president Laura Skandera Trombley. Ronald Bunte
School teacher, leader, veteran
A local area resident for more than half a century, Ronald Theodore Bunte died November 12, 2010 in Glendora following a 4 month illness. Mr. Bunte was 75. The eldest of three children of Edwin Clarence Bunte and Beatrice Fox Bunte, Mr. Bunte was born in Aurora, Illinois on January 2, 1934. While he was still an infant, he and his parents moved to the family farm in Kankakee, Illinois to assist his paternal grandfather and grandmother. The family grew, with the addition of a sister, Alice, in 1937 and a brother, Howard, in 1939. Mr. Bunte worked with his father on the farm while attending school in Kankakee. He graduated from Kankakee High School in 1950 at the age of 16, the youngest member of his class. Influenced by the advent of World War II and the military experiences of 5 uncles, brothers of his mother, Mr. Bunte enlisted in the U.S. Air Force after attending Olivet Nazarene College in Kankakee for a year and a half. Following his induction in 1952, he underwent basic training in San Antonio, Texas and then took specialized training as a gunner mechanic. After serving for 2 years aboard B29 bombers in service in Japan, he retrained as a boom operator and became a member of the 509th ARS (Air Refueling Squadron) unit based at Roswell, New Mexico. His service included time in Japan, Scotland, England and other European sites. Shortly after completing an extension of his duty and leaving the Air Force in 1956, he learned that the plane on which he served, a Boeing KC-97, had tragically crashed, killing all those on board. Moving west, Mr. Bunte utilized his training in electronics as he worked at the General Dynamics plant in Pomona. During that period of time, Mr. Bunte met and married his first wife, Jane Hanley and returned to school at La Verne College, now the University of La Verne. He completed his coursework for a bachelors degree in June, 1959, but had begun teaching earlier that year for the Charter Oak Unified School District. As he taught, Mr. Bunte continued administrative coursework at California State University at Los Angeles, and became the youngest principal of a junior high school in California when he took the position at Ruddock Intermediate School in the Charter Oak District in 1964. By the time of his retirement in 1990, Mr. Bunte had served as principal at a number of schools in the Charter Oak District. Mr. Bunte was elected to the Charter Oak Board of Education in 1991, a position that he considered as one of his most difficult job assignments, but one that he undertook proudly. In 1990, Mr. Bunte served as Director of Childrens Services at the Covina Masonic Home. He also joined the Covina Masonic Lodge and continued his active membership there to the present time. He was a recipient of the Hiram Award for outstanding service to the local lodge. Mr. Bunte unretired in the mid1990s to teach again in special education at Charter Oak High School, later moving to an elementary school position. He also served the district as an interim principal at several elementary schools. He was chosen in 2001 as the districts Teacher of the Year, a high honor from his peers. Even after his full retirement, Mr. Bunte continued to volunteer at Washington Elementary School. He often noted that young children are our last chance to make it better, and he wanted to do what he could to help. Over the years, Mr. Bunte, in addition to his Lodge activities, maintained his interest in aviation, both civil and militaryalthough after completing a ground school course in preparation for a private pilot license, he decided that he had flown enough in the U.S. Air Force. He enjoyed sports, especially da Bears of Chicago, and as a Californian, the Los Angeles Rams. He coached and most importantly, as a friend. He made history come alive for the children, Ms. Gilkinson notes. He cared very much about teaching every child. After his retirement he would give history presentations in the classroom for me. Harry Butterbaugh, a long time friend, says of Mr. Bunte, We met when he was student teaching. He was a real nice guyeasy to get along with, easy to like, and he did a good job. We shared a lot of experiences over a lot of years. Brian Akers met Mr. Bunte when he was in his first year of teaching and Mr. Akers was an eighth grader in his class. He was a throwback in education, Mr. Akers observes. Values were important, and he had high character and high morals. He had been an outstanding teacher committed to education in the Charter Oak Unified School District. Mr. Bunte leaves an extended family including his wife, Sandra Bunte of Covina. His children include daughter Laura Beth Jurina of New York City, New York and granddaughters, Kate and Ali; daughter Lynette Jane Kirwan of Mountain Home, Arkansas, daughter Lesley Diane de Lugo of Upland and granddaughters Alexis and Jennifer; son and daughter-in-law Mark and Kathleen Bunte of Kenwood, California and grandchildren Amanda and Kyle. The step children include Mike and Susie Faustini of Laguna Hills and grandsons Darren, David and Greg, and Marina and George Karkas of Upland and grandchildren Jared and Jordan. Mr. Bunte is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Howard Bunte and Terri Shaw of Upland, along with 2 nieces and a nephew and their children. Services will be held on Thursday, November 18, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Christs Church of the Valley, 1404 W. Covina Blvd. in San Dimas. Memorial contributions may be made in honor of Mr. Bunte to the Charter Oak Educational Foundation, P.O. Box 1763, Covina, CA 91722.

Little League in Upland and following his marriage to Sandra Faustini in 1989, enjoyed the soccer activities of his wifes grandsons. Trips to Bishop to fish and see the Bishop Mule Days parade, camping trips in his motor home with his son-in-law, George Karkas, reading historical accounts, both novels and non-fiction, and cheering for his beloved Charter Oak Chargers on Friday nights with brother-in-law Don Markiewitz and friend Bill Hobbsall were things that he relished. Mike Lawshe, Director of Special Projects and Programs for the Claremont Unified School District, recalls that through his association with Mr. Buntes brother, Howard Bunte, a fellow educator in Claremont, he realized who Ron Bunte was. He was my principal at Ruddock Junior High School in Covina. Through the eyes of a 13-yearold, Ron was bigger than life. He was THE PRINCIPAL. He was in charge, but he always connected with students and was always approachable...but he also expected students to learn and be respectful of other students and staff. Under his leadership, I remember my junior high experience very positively. He will be missed. Carol Gilkinson knew Mr. Bunte for over 40 years as a teacher, principal,

Together we can do it
by Joe Tonan, Claremont Faculty Association president

he COURIER editorial of November 10th, The Community is Not the Enemy, states The election is over and it is time to move forward. The community is not the enemy. The Claremont Faculty Association agrees with this sentiment and looks forward to all stakeholders working together constructively for the benefit of the schools and ultimately, the children.

However, we are concerned that the opinion expressed in the COURIER that 2 teachers lashed out against their community at the November 4th CUSD school board meeting is neither

fair nor constructive. The intent of the speakers, both of whom are Claremont residents, was to begin the dialogue about how to move forward. Disappointment in the outcome of Measure CL was expressed; however, the teachers comments were not disrespectful to Claremont residents. The speakers have not forgotten about the $303,000 given to CUSD by the Claremont Educational Foundation this year. In fact, one of the teachers who spoke at the board meeting is a former board member and active leader of CEF and both are ongoing supporters of CEF. All teachers fully appreciate the generous support for students provided by CEF, school site parent faculty associations, booster groups, community organizations and other members of the community. Unfortunately, massive cuts in state

view point
funding for public education cannot be remedied by voluntary donations alone. The losses to our schools have been millions of dollars per year. Severe cuts have already been made, and the future of state funding is not encouraging. That is why Measure CL was so important and so strongly supported by CFA. We agree with the editorial that Measure CL did have flaws. Needs lists should have been more clearly presented to the community and the size of the bond may have been too large for the economic times we are now enduring, but the needs of our students are still present. Students lack resources and there is growing lack of resource equity between school sites. Over the many weeks of the CL campaign, community members argued about the measure, and at times the language became heated. On November 2nd, Claremont residents spoke about this issue and they spoke clearly; but one thing remains true, all of us want to do what is best

John Skandera
John Skandera, the father of Pitzer College president Laura Skandera Trombley, died on November 7, 2010 at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. He was 91. A memorial service for Mr. Skandera, a retired elementary school teacher, will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 4, 2010 at Little Bridges Auditorium on the Pomona College campus. Rev. Butch Henderson will conduct the service. A more complete account of Mr. Skanderas life will be published in an upcoming edition of the COURIER.

for the students of Claremont. After the election, Jay Pocock, one of spokespersons for the No on CL campaign, posted this on his Facebook page, Now is time for real work. Get the children of CUSD what they really need. Now, we have the responsibility to come together, to listen to each other, and to begin to work together. This is not just for the sake of reconciliation, although that is needed right now, but to do what is best for our students and our community. The 2 teachers mentioned in the editorial presented specific needs in their schools and in their departments. They were not implying that the community is the enemy. They were attempting to begin the constructive process of identifying essential needs and finding ways to meet those needs. We look forward to working with Mr. Pocock and other members of the community in this process. We all need to extend a hand out to our former opponents. We will still have differences, but the desire to do what is best for our students will help us find common cause. There is work to do and together we can do it.

C-M-S won the nail biting overtime game when the Sagehens failed to convert their final touchdown. The final score was 31-30.

Stags edge out Sagehens in season finale thriller

he Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Stags will have the Peace Pipe in its possession for yet another season.

Leading 31-30 in overtime, the Stags were able to prevent Pomona-Pitzer quarterback Jacob Caron from crossing the goal line on a 2-point conversion attempt to emerge victorious over the Sagehens by the same score in the teams 53rd gridiron battle at Merritt Field on Saturday. The guys played great and I could not be happier, said C-M-S interim head coach Steve Retzlaff. Rival games are good games and we knew that we had to play better [than Pomona-Pitzer] in order to win. Following the game, the entire Stags roster rushed onto the field and celebrated with the Peace Pipe for the 4th consecutive year. C-M-S (7-2, 4-2) now leads the all-time series between the 2 teams with a 30-23 margin. Both teams were deadlocked at the end of regulation on Saturday, 24-24. Starting from the 25-yard line, it took C-M-S just 2 plays to reach the end zone as Stags quarterback Peter Kimmey scored on an 11-yard run. An extra point by kicker Chet Corcos gave C-MS a 31-24 advantage. Pomona-Pitzer (1-8, 1-5) responded as Caron completed 4 straight passes on the Sagehens next possession, ending with a 6-yard touchdown reception by Robert Maki. The Sagehens decided to go for the 2point conversion to win the game but Caron did not

The Sagehens scored on the very next play but fell one point short when they could not convert. make it into the end zone. We missed the PAT before and weve struggled all year at it so we decided to go for it, said Pomona-Pitzer head coach Roger Caron. It just didnt work out but you have to take chances. Saturdays game started out slowly as Corcos 19-year field goal with 7 seconds remaining in the opening quarter gave C-M-S a 3-0 lead after the first 15 minutes of play. A mixture of Carons passing and Luke Sweeneys running allowed Pomona-Pitzer to march from its own 24-yard-line to the 14 before settling for a field goal by Brian Hentschel to tie the game at 3-3. Sweeney finished

the game with 84 yards on the ground. C-M-S responded on its next drive as a 56-yard-run by Trevor Beltz took the Stags from their own 29-yard line down to the Sagehen 16. Four plays later, Kimmey scored on a 2-yard TD run as the Stags took the lead once more, 10-3. The C-M-S quarterback would go on to finish with 15 carries for 106 yards and 4 rushing touchdowns. It took Pomona-Pitzer 10 plays to consume 62 yards over the next 3 minutes in order to match the Stags once again. After a pass interference penalty on 4th and 3, Caron scored on a 2-yard run to force a 2nd tie at 10-10 with 3:18 left in the 2nd quarter.

The Pomona-Pitzer defensive line looks a little worse for the wear near the end of their game against rival Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday in Claremont.

Three minutes was not enough to hold off C-M-S for the remainder of the half as Jack Lamb returned the ensuing kickoff for 37 yards to the 50. Once the Stags got down to the Sagehen 23, Kimmey scored on the ground again to put C-M-S ahead at the half, 17-10. Our offensive line beat their defensive line the whole game, Kimmey said. We relied on them the whole season and every game, theyve come to play. The 3rd quarter featured 5 changes of possession with neither team able to score for nearly the entire period. The Sagehens then sliced into the Stags lead when Caron hit receiver Robert McNitt for a 9-yard touchdown as time expired in the 3rd quarter. But Hentschels missed extra point kept Pomona-Pitzer down, 17-16. Kimmey scored his 3rd touchdown of the game with 11:07 left in the 4th quarter of an 18-yard trot to the end zone. A 30-yard pass play from Kimmey to receiver Jacob Tobis earlier in the drive took the Stags from their own 33 to the Sagehen 37. Down by 8, Pomona-Pitzer drove the ball 60 yards down the field on their next drive and scored on Carons 2nd rushing touchdown from the 10 with 7:29 to play. Caron and Maki then hooked up on a passing play for the 2point conversion to tie the game at 2424. Maki recorded 13 catches for 131 yards and a touchdown. Caron is no stranger to close games against the rival Stags. In the past 4 years, Pomona-Pitzer has lost by a com-

bined total of only 25 points to C-M-S in 4 meetings. Though his career at Pomona-Pitzer didnt end with a victory over his teams rival, Caron looks back on his last 4 years as an enjoyable experience. He completed 30 of 52 for 257 yards with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. It doesnt matter what our records are, the games between us have been close for the past 4 years, the PomonaPitzer quarterback said. I always try to keep calm and level-headed. Ive enjoyed the last 4 years even with the ups and downs. Having the chance to play and be closer to my family was a great experience. Coach Caron likewise enjoyed coaching his son for nearly half a decade. Its been a treathow many parents get to coach their own kids? he said. Its been a dream to coach Jake and I think with him leaving, its going to be a huge hole for the program. As for Coach Retzlaff, a third place finish in the SCIAC with just 2 losses through the season will make a strong case for his candidacy when C-M-S appoints a new head coach for next season. He is thankful for everything he learned as an assistant to former longtime C-MS coach Rick Candaele. I am thankful for Coach Candaele and I cant really say how much I am grateful for this opportunity and how much he prepared me for this opportunity.

Wolfpack football stays in playoff picture he wait is over. Playoff football is a reality scoreboard again for Claremont

High School.

Even though the Wolfpack ended the season with a 31-27 loss at Damien last Friday, its 7 wins during the season have earned the team a 2nd place finish in the Sierra League and its first postseason berth in several years. Though Daniel Kessler finished with season highs in completions (29) and yards (438), it was not enough to stop the Pack (7-3, 3-2) from suffering its 2nd consecutive loss to end the regular season. The senior quarterback finished with 3178 yards on the season to go along with 34 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Kessler had plenty of help throughout the 2010 season from the receiving trio of Aaron Dockery, Tanner Kuramata and Jackson Reeder. Dockery led all receivers with 74 catches for 1258 yards and 15 touchdowns while Kuramata contributed 55 receptions for 796

yards and 6 touchdowns. Reeder finished 3rd in receptions with 38 catches for 590 yards and was 2nd in touchdowns with 11. Defensively, Claremont had a strong season from Jake Okerman, who finished with 96 tackles and 6 sacks over the course of the 10-game season. James Wernli added 80 tackles and Salim Cleghorne led the Wolfpack with 3 interceptions. Roosevelt (8-2) will be Claremonts next opponent this Friday in a first round CIF Southern Section playoff matchup at Roosevelt High School in Corona. The Mustangs scored more than 45 points on 4 different occasions this season, including an 80-point performance against Torrance back in September. Roosevelt ended the regular season with a 63-21 loss to Corona Centennial. Fridays Inland Division first round game will begin at 7:30 p.m. The winner will play the winner of Rancho Cucamonga and Murrieta Valley in the 2nd round on November 26th.

Personal, dependable service

acienda Carpet and Upholstery Cleaning is a family owned business that has been serving the Inland Empire since 1970. Grover and Rosalie Helvie, the proud owners of Hacienda Carpet, take pride in their personal and dependable service. Since the company is family owned, Mr. Helvie is the proud and friendly face that all customers will see, whether for a consultation or cleaning. Since the 1970s, the Helvies have extended their business beyond carpet cleaning to include cleaning of upholstery and tile, as well as specialty items such as Oriental and decorative area rugs. Rosalie emphasizes that using a 1300 psi vacuum, rather than renting a commercial cleaning vacuum, will ensure the carpet and padding are deeply cleaned, while preventing stickiness and residual dirt from resurfacing. For a truly refreshing carpet service, please visit the Hacienda Carpet ad in our Service Directory.
