Outrage!
Dear Editor: I have followed the outraged parents after the Fourth of July Parade dared to include gay marriage signs. And we all know how much hubbub surrounded the loss of the old oak tree on Indian Hill. No fast food restaurants will dot our Claremont horizons and how could vandals dare push over the bronze horse that has stood so stately for the last few years? Yes on CL. No on CL. Posters and picketing, Peace or War. But there has been absolutely no discussion, spontaneous committee or demonstration about the computerized display at the U.S. Bank on the corner of Indian Hill and Foothill Boulevard which daily tells me the time and temperature, being out of order? Where is the local outrage over this egregious malfunction, I ask?

The meaning of 47
Dear Editor: Here's more on the story of 47 at Pomona College (see last Saturday's COURIER). The number didnt come out of a senior thesis. The Chemistry Department had a grant from the National Institutes of Health to bring a group of bright high schools seniors interested in science to the Pomona campus for an intensive summer of lectures and research. Naturally there were lots of bull sessions to discuss all sorts of things. At one of these the significance of mystical numbers came up. The postulate was that one could pick any number and, as if by magic, it would turn up in all sorts of places. A number was chosen to test this47. Soon after the Claremont exit to the then-new 10 Freeway was numbered 47. The rest is history.

think before you get a pet. Consider all that is involved with having a pet; the cost of food, vet bills, the type of breed (does it bark a lot, shed a lot, dig, etc.). Many people will get pets for Christmas without considering all the things that are involved with a pet and then that poor animal ends up abandoned in the streets or left in a shelter. Please put a lot of thought into which pet you are going to get and make sure you have the time to devote to it, and make sure you are willing to love it. No animal deserves to be mistreated, abused, neglected, starved, or tortured. And remember, please get your pets spayed or neutered.

Kudos, Human Services

Dear Editor: I would like to congratulate Human Services Staff members Caroline Bustos and Krista Dieringer for the wonderful job they did with the TAC/YAC dance on Friday, November 5th. Staff along with Teen Committee volunteers created a safe environment for El Roble Middle school students to gather with friends and enjoy an evening of dance and activities. This was a fantastic collaboration between the village merchants and city staff, I had a chance to stop by and was thrilled to see the Depot being used to give the teens a safe environment in the village on a Friday night. The Human Services department has been working very hard to help meet the needs of teens in our community and I think this is the first step towards many more wonderful events which we hope to hold in the village.

Thank you, voters

Dear Editor: Id like to extend my sincere thanks to those who voted for me in this election. Tough work lies ahead, but I am more committed than ever to getting our country and economy back on the right track by restoring fiscal discipline, accountability and transparency in Washington.

For the love of animals

Dear Editor: As we approach the colder weather, I would like to encourage everyone to think about their pets and the pets in the local animal shelters. All shelters will gladly accept donations in the form of cash, bags of cat and dog food, blankets and towels. Most people dont realize that in most shelters, the dogs have to sleep on the cold, hard concrete. Blankets and towels of all sizes will make a huge difference for those poor dogs. I would also like to ask people to

City changes tune in making sanitation bids public

ity staff, according to Councilmember Peter Yao, improperly disposed of city documents that should be available for public review. Bids submitted by private companies responding to the citys Request for Proposals (RFP) on its sanitation department were sent back to the companies before members of the public could review them.
Last month, the COURIER made a public records request to the city seeking those documents in order to conduct an independent examination of the companies responses compared with Claremonts city-run operation. The city flip-flopped on whether the documents would be released before sending them back to the private companies without making copies available. Back in February, the city council decided in closed session to conduct a cost/benefit analysis of Claremonts city-run sanitation department. City officials said a thorough study of its sanitation operation would require comparisons of the departments activities with those in the private sector. An RFP was issued by the city in August and respondes were received from 4 private companies as well as the citys own sanitation department. The 5 RFPs were turned in to the city by September 14. At the October 12 city council meeting, the council decided in closed session to suspend its cost/benefit analysis of the city-run sanitation services for at least 5 years, despite having already spent roughly $15,000 in staff time going through the process. The decision was made during negotiations with city sanitation employees, who agreed to some concession over their CalPERS benefits if the analysis was put on hold. The city council voted 3 to 2 in favor of the agreement, with Mr. Yao and Councilmember Corey Calaycay against. The day following the October 12 city council meet-

ing, the COURIER requested all materials submitted by Burrtec Waste Industries, Waste Management Inc., Athens Services, Republic Services and the citys own Sanitation Division in response to the RFP on sanitation services. In response to the COURIERs initial request for the documents, City Clerk Lynne Fryman said they would be available in 2 weeks time. Upon final approval of the side letter agreement with the citys sanitation employees, which is scheduled for the October 26 agenda, the Request for Proposals...will be subject to disclosure, Ms. Fryman wrote in an email. The side letter agreement was signed at the following city council meeting on October 26. The next day, the COURIER once again asked Ms. Fryman for the requested documents. We were told the documents had already been sent back to the companies and not available for review. With approval of the side letter agreement last evening, the city manager has directed staff to return the unopened proposals to the business owners, Ms.

Fryman responded. In a telephone interview Monday, City Attorney Sonia Carvalho argued that because the documents were never opened, they are not public records subject to disclosure. Bids and resulting contracts are generally disclosable but only after the bids are opened or the contracts are awarded, Ms. Carvalho said. Mr. Yao did not agree with her assessment. Thats simply not true, he said. No one can declare these documents not open to the public. All city documents are public, unless they are confidential such as personnel matters. I announced in a formal public setting that I wanted the documents available to the public. The city manager violated my request to keep these documents available and had his staff improperly dispose of them the next morning [by sending them back to the companies]. At the October 26 city council meeting, Mr. Yao announced his desire to have the documents released to members of the public interested in reviewing them. He also said the city should have studied the RFPs and presented the findings to the council and the community before negotiations were finalized with the sanitation employees. The RFP documents had been in the citys possession for nearly a month before the October 12 city council meeting where the side letter agreement was initially discussed in closed session. At the September 14 city council meeting, City Manager Jeff Parker assured the public the documents would be reviewed by city staff in a timely manner and their findings would be presented to the Community Services Commission in late October or November. Its anticipated that it will take the rest of this month and part of October for staff to complete its evaluation and then on to the Community Services [Commission], Mr. Parker said at the meeting. It is unclear why the bids were never reviewed and remained sealed during that time. Mr. Parker did not return phone calls seeking comment.

Weve had a lot of potential donors tell us that were not able to make a donation at this time. We pursued 5 to 6 opportunities but have been rejected in each one. According to Ms. Elhai, the funding for the renovation was originally supposed to be covered by remaining money from Measure Y that had low interest rates attached to it. But the renovation was never realized and as a result, Claremont High School applied for the Career Technical Education Facilities Program challenge grant in 2008. The district is currently searching for donors to make substantial contributions toward the renovation. Ms. Elhai said that the district is not accepting donations from the public at large. Right now, we have raised zero dollars because the district is looking for the big potential donor, she explained. We havent been accepting any money from the community because the district did not want to have to give the money back to everyone in case we didnt reach $1.5 million. Latest student achievement reports show mixed results

akmont Outdoor School, Vista del Valle Elementary School and Claremont High School shared both the positives and the negatives of their respective schools academic progress at Thursdays Claremont Unified School District board meeting.

The 3 schools presented their Single Plan for Student Achievement reports before the board, and fielded questions from board members as well as Claremont resident Joe Farrell, following the presentations. Though Oakmont improved in its Academic Performance Index (API) score and Academic Yearly Progress (AYP) overall, the school has been moved into Year 1 of Program Improvement. As the targets get greater and we look at all of our significant subgroups, school districts are being penalized with Program Improvement, said Bonnie Bell, CUSD Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services. More and more districts are being put into Program Improvement as well as schools themselves. Were chasing a moving target. Oakmont rose 28 points in its API score from 743 to 771 during the 2009-10 school year. Over the past 4 years, the CUSD campus has recorded improvements among its Hispanic (83 points), White (33 points) and Socio-Economically Disadvantaged (54 points) subgroups. With the exception of its school-wide and SocioEconomically Disadvantaged groups in Mathematics, Oakmont met 6 of its 8 AYP targets in 2010. The school has featured gains among 3rd to 6th graders in English-Language Arts and among 2nd to 5th graders in Mathematics over the past 4 years. Yet it was the inability for the Socio-Economically Disadvantaged subgroup to meet its math AYP target for 2 years that led to Oakmont being placed in Program Improvement. Oakmont Principal Adriana Garrett said some of the actions she and her staff plan to carry out are to implement a Response to Intervention (RTL) program, identify and monitor students who are not proficient, increase small group instruction and correspond with Vista del Valle staff. We have to put together a 2-year plan to get out of Program Improvement and weve actually modeled our plan after Vista del Valle because they did such a phenomenal job last year with their great gains, Ms. Garrett said. We have that already in place and we are doing several implementations to continue to move forward. Vista rose from an API score of 770 in 2009 to 820
FOOT AUCTION continued from the previous page

in 2010. Since 2002, the school has improved by 186 points. The Hispanic subgroup increased from 593 to 806 during the same period of time and the SocioEconomically Disadvantaged subgroup grew from 623 to 808. Board vice president Beth Bingham was pleased that Oakmont will be working together with Vista in order to implement similar strategies for success. I was delighted to hear that youre looking to Vista [del Valle] for some guidance after their success, Ms. Bingham said. I thought that would be a wonderful partnership. After 2 consecutive years of not meeting its AYP target in English-Language Arts in 2007 and 2008, Vista was entered into Program Improvement for the 2009-10 school year. The school responded by increasing its scores an average of 18 percent among 2nd through 6th graders last year. One of the things we know that we did both anecdotally and statistically is that we read lots more, said Vista del Valle Principal Ley Yeager. You can walk onto our campus and ask any kid what theyre reading and 95 percent of them will know why they chose that book. Mr. Yeager said teaching students study skills and utilizing Vista teachers for afterschool intervention has also played a role in the schools improved numbers. The principal said the school will have a stronger online presence this year with an updated website that will include video re-enactments and book reviews. Board member Mary Caenepeel congratulated Mr. Yeager and the rest of the Vista staff on their improvement. She also expressed her appreciation of Vistas focus on music and art programs. Youre attaching those children to their passion, Ms. Caenepeel said. And I think that when a child finds their passion and theyre allowed to pursue it definitely it is a self-esteem issueit helps the learner. They feel good about themselves and I think it translates to the academic. Im glad that youre addressing the whole child.

CHS gets high marks; still areas for improvement arning a 6-year accreditation from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) was one of the Claremont High Schools highlights during the 2009-10 school year. The school also experienced gains in proficiency in Biology and Chemistry while ranking above the national average in SAT scores and above the worldwide average in International Baccalaureate scores. Mathematics is a topic of concern from CHS as an estimated 74 percent of students scored basic or below on the Geometry California Standards Test (CST) and

88 percent scored basic or below on the Algebra I CST in 2010. CHS also recorded low performances overall in the Hispanic, African American, English Learner, Socio-Economically Disadvantaged and Students with Disabilities subgroups. The English Learner subgroup has not met its AYP target in English-Language Arts for the past 3 years or in Mathematics for 2 of the last 3 years. The Students with Disabilities subgroup hasnt fulfilled its AYP requirements in English Language-Arts or Mathematics for the past 3 years. The Socio-Economically Disadvantaged subgroup has fallen short of its AYP target in English-Language Arts for the past 2 years and in Mathematics last year. Along with implementing more intervention, CHS Principal Brett OConnor is giving teachers more time to collaborate. Last year and in the past, weve only had one day of department chairs being able to meet, he said. In our self-assessment for the WASC plan, we identified that as not enough time and the WASC team agreed with us. Now teachers and department chairs will meet twice a month. And the 2nd meeting will be on data analysis. That is something that we have already implemented and have started this year. Board president Hilary LaConte suggested that part of the reason for Claremont Highs struggles in math is due to students not being ready for Algebra I and Geometry when they first enter high school. She also believes that more math intervention at El Roble Intermediate School would be beneficial. I think that students are coming to you not as prepared as they should be, Ms. LaConte said to Dr. OConnor. Youre getting the fallout from that but youre going to have to work with making it better for our students. Mr. Farrell responded to each presentation at the meeting. He told schools that comparing this years achievement plan to the previous years achievement is important, as well as having specific reasons why changes were made from one year to the next. The Claremont resident would like to see the schools explain how the action items in the achievement plans are being evaluated from year to year. Last years plan had very similar action items yet there is no review of steps that were taken to meet those items, what worked and what didnt work, Mr. Farrell said. Again, its a district problem. I know Dr. [Terry] Nichols is new. I know Dr. Bell is new. But youre always going to have new people. And I think the district needs to have a coherent focus to make sure this stuff is being looked at.

each year and provides the money needed to run at least one show at Bridges Auditorium. Along with the production of 42nd Street in May 2011, the department is also running Starmites at Bridges Auditorium in February 2011. All of our performers donate items or auction off a service, said CHS senior Kiley Horan. We also get a lot of people to support us and they donate a lot of stuff. We then work on a list and thats what the audience sees that night. Fellow CHS senior Scott Nicholes is taking musical theatre for the first time this school year. He has been part of the instrumental music and choral departments at CHS and ha taken theatre classes at Citrus College. After attending a past FOOT Auction as a member of the audience, Scott looks

forward to performing this year. When I attended [FOOT Auction], at first I thought it was just another show until I saw all the tables. Then I realized it was a huge affair, he said. The community is not the enemy

by Landus Rigsby

he election has ended. Sixty percent of Claremont voters stamped the No option in regard to Measure CL on November 2nd. Case closed and now the community can come together in order to benefit Claremont schools, right?
Unfortunately, it may not be so easy, especially after the comments made by 2 Claremont High School teachers at last Thursdays board meeting. What was most troubling about their comments was how the community was wrongly labeled for declining Measure CL. One of the teachers commented: I moved with my family to Claremont because we valued a community that placed a high value on education. I then decided to become an English teacher at Claremont High School because I wanted to serve that community to help carry out those values. Although the lack of public support for Measure CL has made me question whether those ideals will remain valued, I, along with my colleagues, will continue to put energy and enthusiasm into keeping Claremont going despite the lack of financial support from the community at large. We will continue to teach your children in classrooms that leak roofs and in science labs that were modernized with Measure Y. We will continue to teach your children using chalkboards and using the 5 SMART Boards that exist in this district. We will use technology and we will use paper and pencil. We will cheer for your students in a rundown wrestling room and in a modern football stadium. We will continue to teach your children because we do value education and we do take pride in our schools. And we do intend to carry out those values despite the message we received from Measure CL. I am glad to hear that teachers will put the same effort into Claremont classrooms even though Measure CL failed. But to put lack of financial support and community in the same sentence is disrespectful to Claremont residents. Claremonters have shown their support for CUSD schools time and time again. Have we forgotten about the $303,000 that was given to CUSD by the Claremont Ed-

ucational Foundation this year as a result of predominately community support? Have we forgotten about the $100,000 check that CEF has written to the district every year prior as a result of community support? What about the Save Our Schools Campaign in 2004 that raised nearly $700,000 in 2 months to support the district? Those figures do not even include the countless amounts of money given by school site Parent Faculty Associations (PFAs) and community organizations, as well as how much time and energy members of the community invest into Claremont schools. Yet this was never mentioned during at the board meeting. The other CHS teachers comments were expressed with a tone of frustration as she proceeded to demand that the community fund computers for her Advanced Placement (AP) Statistics course. Here is a sampling of her speech given last Thursday: Thirdly, I was teaching my AP Stats class and I was thinking back. When I went to high school, we were required to learn how to use SlideBook. We had to use the SlideBook. When I graduated high school and I took a chemistry class in college, no professor was going to teach me how to use a SlideBook. I had to know that technology. I look at that class and what? The AP curriculum says I have to teach my students it deals with looking at computer output. We have 20 working computers in the math department. Thats for every day, every student thats in math. I got those computers starting the 3rd day of school for about 4 or 5 days. Then it went to another teacher. Those computers have been used just about every period, every day since. I also got the computers for 2 days in the middle of October. My time to get the computers again for my students are November 12th and November 15th. And thats what I have to teach them with. I am trying to prepare them to meet the standards to go to college and thats the technology that I need. Yes, the

chalk board was good enough for me and its not even CUSD, its not even California whos telling me I need to teach more. If people want to know what specific thing they can buy for the school, [its] 20 computers so I can have 40 and every student can have a computer when I go over the lessons. And Id really like to have 2 sets of computers for 37 students per class. Thank you very much. Theres no excuses anymore. You know what the problems are. I dont want to hear any more excuses. I can empathize with this teacher and her needs for her classroom. Both of my parents are in education. They both have also felt the effects of budget cuts and lack of state funding for education. Yet throughout the entire Measure CL campaign, the COURIER and members of the public at large were never presented with any specific project information from the various school sites. From July through October, the schools could have gathered lists from different teachers and consolidated them into a needs list for each site. This was never done. Furthermore, has the community been so gracious in its giving over the years that it is always expected and even a requirement for community members to give of their time, money and energy to the district? Once again, we can bring up the $303,000 from CEF. Or how about the fact that the community is still shouldering the Measure Y bond that was passed 10 years ago? We must remember that there are no students to teach and no kids coming to Claremont schools if their parents cant pay their mortgages and other bills. I understand that there was a lot of emotion behind this bond measure. I can even understand that the CHS teachers were frustrated by the election results and believe them to be excellent teachers who really want the best for their students. But is it wise to lash out against those who are, in actuality, your biggest supporters but who just wish to find another way to help you? Claremont Faculty Association Joe Tonan gave a terrific concession speech on Thursday where he said that both the Yes and No sides of Measure CL all care about education. His focus was on people coming together for the benefit of the schools and ultimately, the children. I agree with his words. The election is over and it is time to move forward. The community is not the enemy.

He calls it Zen through the ears.

Juanita Gutierrez Dominguez

homemaker, musician, Claremont native
Juanita Gutierrez Dominguez, who lived her entire life in Claremont with the exception of a short period just outside the towns east border, died on October 27, 2010 at Plott Nursing Home in Ontario. She was 92. Ms. Dominguez was born in Claremont on October 7, 1918, in the neighborhood her son called the West Barrio, on Oberlin Avenue adjacent to what is now Claremont Village West. Her parents had come to the US from Mexico in 1914. After a few years living in the home of her birth, her family moved to the East Barrio of Claremont, the area commonly known as Arbol Verde, historically a Mexican community. With Claremont schools segregated at the time of her elementary education, Ms. Dominguez attended the Escuela Mexicana, which was located next to Bridges Auditorium on the Pomona College campus. As the eldest daughter with numerous younger siblings, she left school at age 12, after finishing sixth Gutierrez Sisters, they played music at Padua Hills Theater, Mexican fiestas around town, weddings, church-sponsored block parties and at other places and events. During the war, Ms. Dominguez met her future husband, Mariano Dominguez of San Dimas, at a dance hall that once stood at Claremont Boulevard and First Street. They married in 1944 and temporarily lived on an orange grove in Monte Vista, which was unincorporated Montclair at the time. Mr. Dominguez, now deceased, served as the groves foreman. During these 5 years, Mr. Dominguez was building a house in nearby Claremont, to which they moved in 1950. For most of her life, Ms. Dominguez continued what she had become accustomed to in her youth, a homemaker raising her family, being dutiful, washing and darning and churning butter, said her son, John Dominguez. She was quiet and shy, dutiful and forgiving, Mr. Dominguez described his mother. Shes an example of the dutiful wife and mother who will forgive any and all sins of her children or her husband, and he was a model husband. Didnt drink, smoke, cuss, nothing. Throughout her entire life, she continued to play her mandolin, entertaining family and friends at gatherings and church functions at Our Lady of the Assumption Church. It wasnt until she was in her 50s that she learned to drivebut only during the day, said her son. Ms. Dominguez is survived by her son, John Dominguez; her daughter, Anna Marie Dominguez; her grandson, Johnnie Mario Dominguez; her siblings, Florence Gutierrez, Abe Gutierrez, Carol Gutierrez, Lupe Razo, Dorothy Martinez and Nellie Villanueva; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Services were held at Todd Memorial Chapel on November 1, 2010, and burial took place at Oak Park Cemetery on November 2.

assigned to study Japanese at the University of Utah. At the completion of one year of study, he was posted to the Army Security Agency under the Signal Corps in Washington DC. After what is known as Victory over Japan Day, or V-J Day, he was sent to Japan where he was stationed in Fukuoka for one year, censoring Japanese mail and parcel post. In September 1946, Mr. Kittell started working for the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company. He worked in various California locations and retired as a district manager after 28 years with the company. He was most proud of establishing and managing one of 12 Long Lines Centers covering the US and Canada between 1963 and 1975. Mr. Kittell and his wife were involved in real estate, traveled extensively and were very active in several local charities; most notably Casa Colina Centers for Rehabilitation and Boys Republic, a school and treatment center that helps troubled youth. In 1988, they moved into Mt. San Antonio Gardens where they continued their volunteer activities. Mr. Kittell is survived by his wife of 68 years, Barbara Kittell; his 2 sons, Tim and Steve Kittell; and his daughter-in-law, Ella Kittell. Mr. Kittell has donated his body to the Bodies for Science Program at Loma Linda University and will later be interred at Oak Park Cemetery in Claremont. Per his wishes, no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to VNA Hospice of Southern California, 150 W. First St., Suite 270, Claremont, CA 91711.

OpenART

Artists open studios giving the public insight to their work

COURIERphotos/Steven Felschundneff Artist and musician Norma Tanega surveys the tall windows of her unique north Claremont studio on Saturday during the OpenART 2010 studio tour on Saturday. Ms. Tanega has lived in the mid century modern home off Mount Baldy road since the 1980s and says that the view of the mountains is constant inspiration for her.

here are hidden sanctuaries all over Claremont where creative minds turn their artistic visions into reality. Garages, back houses and lofts have been converted into workplaces where an active generation of Claremont artists produces their works of art. On Saturday, dozens of people took part in the Claremont Museum of Arts artist studio tour, called OpenART, where art lovers got a behind-the-scenes look at the local art community. You can always see finished pieces on display but this gives us a chance to see artists in their workplaces, see how they create their art and see some of their works in progress, said Carlynne McDonnell, one of 61 people to take the tour. So this is really a special opportunity. A total of 33 artists opened their studios for the tour. The event ran from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by a reception where tour participants and the artists could

further connect. Artists reported having 15 to 20 visitors to their studios throughout the day, said Catherine McIntosh, CMA spokesperson. Many made a sale or 2. Steve Comba, Assistant Director of the Pomona College Museum of Art, helped organize the tour and was a participating artist. His garage and a pool house in his backyard have been transformed into an art studio and gallery where his finished and unfinished paintings are on display. There was a common misunderstanding about the Claremont Museum of Art that the program did not focus at all on local artists, Mr. Comba explained. But we had programming plans similar to this to showcase talent in the region. This tour is one way for the museum to endear itself to the local art community. And it also give the community a chance to meet many of Claremonts local artists who are active today and

producing great works of art. A popular stop on the tour was Georgette Unis studio close to Memorial Park. The Claremont Graduate University alum has lived in the 10th Street home for 31 years and recently renovated her studio to separate wet and dry areas. Ms. Unis works with clay for her sculptures and has a large open wall where she works her acrylic paintings. She believes studio tours like OpenART allow artists and art lovers to connect in new ways. It helps make people aware of the work that goes into each piece and allows them to get more familiar with your work, Ms. Unis said. Other featured artists included Robin Adsit, Barbara Beretich, Kirk Delman, James Fuller, Cathy Garcia, Gary Geraths and Joyce Hesslegrave, Crispin Gonzalez, Rebecca Hamm, Tom Herberg, Mike Hill, Carolyn Lee Howard, Mary Hughes, Paul Knoll, Mike Kotsen, Nancy Macko, Tim Maxwell, Jon Pacini, Elizabeth Preston, Luis Ramierez, T Robert, Anne Seltzer, Tom Skelly, Jeanne Steffan, Norma Tanega, Chris Toovey, Martha Underwood, Ahlene Welsh, Larry White and Michael Woodcock. Following the tour, participants joined the artists at a reception at the home of Dan Van Clapp and Paula Van Horn. About $450 in book sales and $3,000 in ticket sales raised from the event will go toward current CMA operations and preparation to re-open in the future, Ms. Tony Krickl McIntosh said.

Susan Nelson

theologian, professor, dean

The Reverend Susan Nelson, feminist process theologian, popular professor and academic dean for Claremont School of Theology from 2006 through May 2010, died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 4, 2010. Age 63, Rev. Nelson died of brain cancer in the presence of her family. In the short time we were privileged to have her with us, said Jerry D. Campbell, president of Claremont School of Theology, Susan was an exceptional dean for Claremont School of Theology and a significant part of creating an academic vision for the University Project. She possessed an exceptional number of wonderful qualities, but the 2 that affected me most were her creativity and the playful, joyful spirit with which she approached life and work. She was an inspiring person, and we are fortunate to have known her. We will miss her. When Rev. Nelson arrived in Claremont as vice president for academic affairs and dean, she told the community that she was excited to have the possibility to shape the wider educational program so that students are prepared to meet our complex and often confusing world. As Claremont School of Theology began to reimagine a new future for itself, said Kathy Black, vice dean for academic programs, Dean Nelson helped the faculty and students envision how we can be both a school that educates Christian ministers for service to the church but also a school that includes students from other religions so that prejudices can be dispelled and friendships built so religious leaders can work together in the 21st century to bring healing in a fractured world. In November 2008, however, Rev. Nelson was diagnosed with brain cancer. She returned to work after surgery, being open about her situation and challenging students to ask the hard theological questions while still affirming her belief that nothing can separate people from the love of God. In a sermon to new students in August 2009, Rev. Nelson said, I had to learn to hood: Christianity and the Liberation of Women. Her second book, Healing the Broken Heart, dealt with many of the theological questions that she later confronted when diagnosed with a terminal illness. Nurtured by the community of United Presbyterian Women of Southern California, Rev. Nelson became hopeful that the Presbyterian Church would one day value her gifts through the rite of ordination. That hope was realized when, after an invitation to become professor of theology and culture at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, the Pittsburgh Presbytery affirmed her call to ministry and ordained her in 1984. In the 80s and 90s, women were still trying to find their place in the church as religious leaders, ordained and lay. A former student, Rev. Libby Hewett, who was her hospice chaplain in her final weeks, took her classes in the late 80s. She praised Rev. Nelsons specific encouragement of women students, helping them to get in touch with their own voice, their own knowledge and their own unique contribution to the church. Rev. Nelson served on Pittsburghs faculty for 22 years, until she was called to Claremont. Rev. Nelson is survived by her husband, David Lutz of Claremont and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; her 2 daughters, Kathryn Edelman of Pittsburgh and Christina Phillips of Millersville, Maryland; her son, James Dunfee of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; her stepson, David Lutz, and stepdaughter, Gretchen Fues, both of Seattle, Washington; her 2 sisters, Priscilla Nelson of New Jersey and Becky McGovern of Tarrytown, New York; her brother, Randy Nelson of Connecticut; and by her 4 grandchildren. A memorial service was held at Claremont School of Theology on November 9, 2010. Another memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on November 13 at Sixth Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh. Memorial gifts may be made to Claremont School of Theology, 1325 N. College Ave., Claremont, CA 91711. The funds given in her name will be used for scholarship support for a woman studying theology.

liveand trustin a world where not only my brain, but my sense of the future had a hole in itthe hole of unknowing. Seizures caused her to resign from her position as dean in May 2010 and move back to Pittsburgh to be near her children for her final months. Raised Baptist in Nyack, New York, Rev. Nelson graduated from the University of Rochester. She once said that she had been a lover of God all her remembered life. Living on the campus of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary as the spouse of a student, she soon found herself drawn into the ethos of theological education. Her passion for theological questions impelled her to enroll as a student in 1975. While there, she served as student associate at the Community of Reconciliation and graduated with her Master of Divinity degree. She began her doctoral studies in philosophy, religion and theology at what is now Claremont Graduate University in 1979. Highly influenced by the feminist work of Nelle Morton and Ann Bennett of Claremont, Rev. Nelsons doctoral dissertation challenged traditional approaches to theology and focused on the questions women were raising for the churchissues of sin, salvation and the full inclusion of women. Her doctoral thesis became her first book, Beyond Servant-
