Week: January 28th

Subject: Math 1:45-2:05pm

Objective: SWBAT read a ruler measuring length by using inches. Resources

Math manipulatives to read measurements from chosen from the classroom Independent work sheets

Plan for Teaching (I do, We do, You do)

Assessment
Students receive one additional problem on reading a ruler by inches to be used as an exit ticket.

Teacher models measuring an object so students can see the process completed (students will not be measuring today). Teacher exaggerates where the object stops on the ruler, models using finger to draw line from the top of the object to where it stops on the ruler, states This object is about ___ inches long. I know because thats the number closest to where my object stopped on the ruler.

We Do Teacher aligns the ruler to another object (same object twice so all students can see?) Teacher asks for volunteer to read the measurement on the ruler. Encourage using the sentence stem. Asks student how they knew it was that long. Prompts answer The object stopped at that number on the ruler. Measure four more items with the whole group. Encourage different students to volunteer to read the ruler (Hold students from independent work if they are unable to read the ruler when called upon for additional practice). You Do Students complete independent practice sheet reading a ruler by inches (5 problems)

Assessment
Additional measurement problem given to each student to be used as an exit ticket.

We Do Teacher asks a student at a Level 0 to choose an object for the group to measure next. Teacher has students walk her through steps of measuring that object. Student sitting at a Level 0 states the measurement aloud to the group (thumbs up if they are right). Students pair up (provide pairs if there are problems) to measure three different objects and agree with each other on their measurements. Students return to the whole group to state the measurements of their objects using the sentence stem. You Do Students work independently to measure the length of the objects on their independent sheet.

Teacher models measuring an object with a six inch ruler. States steps aloud. o Make sure object starts at the zero of the ruler o Lines the ruler up along the length of the object o Notes what number the object stops on o States _______is about _____ inches long. Recaps to students how she measured. States objective to students
