StAugusnesaiditbest:

If you, therefore, are Christ's body and members, it

is your own mystery that is placed on the Lord's
table! It is your own mystery that you are receiving!
You are saying "Amen" to what you are: your
response is a personal signature, arming your
faith. When you hear "The body of Christ", you reply
"Amen." Be a member of Christ's body, then, so that
your "Amen" may ring true! ... Be what you see;
receive what you are. (Sermon 272)

On this great Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and

forward to receive Jesus under the appearance of
breadandwine.

Were not just saying Amen to what we are

receiving. We are also saying Amen to who and
what we are because of who and what we are
receiving. That simple Amen has serious
repercussions: for how we live our lives, for how we
relate to others, for what we do outside the liturgical
assembly.

Elsewhere in this weeks Bridgeside Bullen youll

come across an arcle by Elizabeth Harrington that
also reminds us of the signicance of what we say

Inmid2012,BishopBillexpressedaconcernaboutthe
waytheFraconRitewascelebratedduringMassesin
the Diocese, a concern that he had come to aer
having travelled around the diocese. He subsequently
asked the Diocesan Liturgy Council to consider the
issue and provide some guidance both to himself and
totheparishes.

Earlier this year, the Liturgy Council issued a Pracce

Note (a resource oering guidance to parishes of the
Diocese)asaresultofarequestfromtheBishop.The
result of this Pracce Note is that there will be a few
smallchangestothewaythispartofourSundayMass
iscelebrated.

What is the Fracon Rite?

Also known as the Breaking of the Bread or the
Lamb of God, the Fracon Rite takes place
immediately aer the Sign of Peace, and is where the
presider breaks the consecrated bread in preparaon
forcommunion.

Who will be eected by the changes?

In short, everyone! Having said that, however, the
changes will have a more direct impact on those
members of our community who are Ministers of
CommunionorMusicians.Theseministerswillneedto
takeparcularnoteofthechanges.

Why are we doing this now?

The Pracce Note was originally released on 21st
February,2013.TheimplementaoninourParishhas
been delayed unl aer the compleon of Lent, the
EasterTriduum,andtheEasterSeasoninorderthatit
not distract from these signicant mes in the
Churchsliturgicalyear.

What are the changes?

Essenally the changes are about when the Fracon
Ritebegins,andwhathappensthereaer.

TheFraconRitedoesnotbeginunlaertheSignof
Peaceiscompleted,thatisunlalevelofsllnesshas
returned amid the assembly. Only aer the presider
determinedthatitistherightdoeshethenbreakthe
consecrated bread in preparaon for communion,
whichaconsignalsthebeginningoftheFraconRite.

Only aer the presider has begun to break the

consecrated bread do the musicians (or, in the
absence of musicians, the assembly) begin to sing or
say The Lamb of God. It is important to not begin
this chant unl the appropriate moment. This is
parcularly important on those occasions (such as at
weekday Masses) when there is no music. We should
not preempt this acon simply because we have
nished giving the Sign of Peace to others around us.
The ming of the beginning of the Fracon Rite
belongstothepresider.

Ministers of Communion are asked to either move

into the sanctuary of the church during the Sign of
Peace or wait unl The Lamb of God has nished
beforedoingso.Inorderthatthischangeinmingnot
unduly delay our celebraon of Mass, it has been
suggested that Ministers of Communion might like to
considersingclosertothefrontofthechurchwhen
theyarerosteredon.

Why do we have to do this?

This is clearly a change from the previous pracce of
theparish,anditmightseemtobemuchtodoabout
nothing. It does, however, come as a result of the
implementaon of a Pracce Note released by the
Diocesan Liturgy Council at the request of, and with
theapprovalof,theBishop.

TheBishopofaDiocesehasaresponsibilitytoensure
that all liturgical celebraons in the diocese are
celebrated in accord with the ritual books and
established liturgical norms. As a result, we have to
givethePracce Noteappropriateaenon.

When will the changes take eect?

Rather than specifya date on which the changes take
eect, it is perhaps more prudent to move towards
the full implementaon of these changes over the
courseofseveralweeks.

To that end, the Parish will move towards the full

implementaon of these changes by the end the end
ofJuly,2013yes,awholetwomonths!

In the intervening period, a goodly dose of good

sense, forbearance, and even good humour will help
us all adapt to these changes. Your cooperaon in
making these changes to our liturgical celebraons
wouldbemuchappreciated.

Where can I get more informaon about the

changes?
If you would like more informaon about these
changes, you can either speak with Fr Andrew (email
or telephone) or you can download the original
Pracce NotefromtheLiturgyResourcesseconofthe
Diocesan website (www.mn.catholic.org.au/catholic

Today the Church celebrates the solemnity of the

MostHolyBodyandBloodofChrist,orCorpusChris,
the Lan name by which it is sll known to many.
SomeparisheswillmarkthedaybyholdingExposion
and Benedicon, but there is much more to the feast
than passive adoraon of the Body of Christ in the
ReservedSacrament.

Whilehewasonearth,JesusbroughttheGoodNews
of his Fathers love to all and showed everyone how
they might have life and have it to the full. Christ
began the Chrisan story and, by calling us friends,
invitesustoconnuethestory.

Celebrang the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

challenges us to recapture the true meaning of the
feastthat we are the Body of Christ. Jesus is the
BodyofChristintheEucharistsothatwemightbethe
BodyofChristinourworld.

Just as Jesus nourishes us with his body and blood in

the Eucharist, we are to nourish the world with our
presence,withourbodyandblood.TheRealPresence
in the Eucharist is not an end in itself, but exists to
make us the Real Presence in the world. If that
conneconisbroken,weendupwithanemptypiety.

Whoever embraces the Real Presence automacally

takes on the challenge to become the Real Presence
for others and commit themselves to the works of
Christ. The feast of the Body and Blood of Christ
celebrates that full reality. Christ is the Real Presence
inving us to become the Real Presence. This is true
foreveryChrisan,fromeverypartoftheglobe,from
every culture and way of life. We are a worldwide
CorpusChris,carryingoutChrists mission.Weplace

The feast of the Body and Blood of Christ reminds us

thatwearenotaloneinhis.Wegatherwithourfellow
parishioners and others around the world to listen to
thesamescripturesbeingproclaimedandtobreakthe
same bread. Through Bapsm, we are in solidarity
withallwhoaretheBodyofChrist.

This solemnity is a celebraon not just of the Real

Presence but of the acve Presence that we,
nourished by the Eucharist, show to others as the
Body of Christ. We are here to break bread. We are
heretobebrokenasbreadinservice.

So when it comes down to it, the Real Presence is

wherever we, nourished by the Real Presence, do the
works of Jesus. This is what the feast is all about.

So that we might receive Communion in a t and
properway,pleasebeawareofthefollowing:

When we process forward to receive Communion,

we have been asked by the Australian Bishops to
adopt a common and unied gesture of reverence
before doing so. In Australia that gesture is a bow
of the head and shoulders (GIRM, 160). Any other
formofreverence,includingagenuecon,should
thereforebeavoided.
Communion by selfinncon (selfdipping) is
neverpermied,sincewereceiveCommunionand
never take Communion. Please refrain from this
inappropriateacon.
We regret that we do not have the physical
facilies to oer communion while kneeling, and
respecully ask you to refrain from kneeling to
receive Communion while part of the procession,
since this is contrary to the nature of the
Communion procession itself. Your cooperaon in
honouring this request is very much appreciated,
andwethankyouforyourconsideraon.
